The German Waltz
"Good men and bad men alike are capable of weakness. The difference is simply that a bad man will be proud all his life of one good deed - while an honest man is hardly aware of his good acts, but remembers a single sin for years on end."
-Vasily Grossman, Life and Fate
Saint Petersburg / Russia / 05AUG62 0340 Local
Victor Zelinsky stood up and out of his chair. He nodded at a female officer across the table, and fixed his tie.
"Comrades of the Union." He started, the female officer had activated his microphone. "The attack on Moscow, the so called terrorist attack on innocent women and children."
The center table, which could easily sit over sixty people, came to life. The whole top lit up and a projection of the Hammer and Sickle fizzled in and out as it rotated. The symbol changed to that of the Russian flag, the Neo-Soviet flag, then the icon of the Bureau of State Security.
"Was no terror attack, it was an act of war."
Carter Neustald, leader of the KCCO, sat on the opposite side of the table. Victor notice the man smile and nod.
Not today you traitor
"But not by some great power. Not by the Europeans, the Americans, or even the remnants of Asia."
The projection changed again, this time hundreds of profiles belonging to the dead and missing. They would appear, then change to another unfortunate citizen or worker.
"Sixty seven thousand, one hundred and eight dead. Over thirty thousand missing."
The table continued to distinguish the dead. Victor caught eyes of a picture, a would be hero, and now dead old friend. Alexi Troksev.
He didn't stop, instead he left his position, and began to circle the table and upper echelon of the Neo-Soviet Union.
"At this very moment, my agents are hunting down those responsible for this act. Each day we have grown closer."
The projection of the dead stopped. Now intelligence files, pictures, and videos popped up and circled around slowly.
"An organization, one spanning the whole world, may be the cause of these acts. Their name, The Big Six."
The data tablets belonging to each member seated around the table pinged in unison. The information packets had been sent, all containing the most up to date information available with the highest classification level.
"This entity, this Big Six, shall not remain hidden forever. Within the hour members of the FSB will raid a possible safe house belonging to them. We will capture anyone we can, and retrieve the intelligence we need using any means necessary."
Victor watched as a member of the KCCO approached Carter and whispered something into his ear. It wouldn't remain a secret for long, the whole room had been designed as an information-gathering hub before the War. Carter looked at the man and waved him off shortly after the whispering had concluded.
"General Neustald," Victor paused his briefing, all eyes turned to Carter. "Is everything alright?"
Carter frowned, "Something in Germany Director. Nothing to concern yourself with."

G&K HQ / S01 / 05AUG62 0630 LOCAL
Wall watched as a Dassault Falcon 10X was refueled on a nearby pad near the base's runway. The flight crew and maintainers were lagging behind, but that seemed to not be an issue as he was the only person here out of his group.
Helian had sent him a message just a minute ago, she was going to be late due to a last-minute issue with some staff-level items. UMP45 and 9 would be flying with them and had assured him that the rest of their team would gain access to the area via other means. Neither of those two were there though, and neither had sent him any updates on their delays, not like they were inclined to.
The East-West facing runway was just waking up, and what sounded like gunshots were in fact pressurized gas canisters going off to scare away birds that may have been in the area. Some distance down to Wall's West, the sound of a Helicopter spooling up its engines broke the relative quiet calm that he had come to enjoy for the past twenty minutes.
"Get there early, we can spend the day relaxing before all the mess gets starts Monday…" He shook his head as he remembered what Helian had told him right as they broke off the night before. He regretted that, not the interaction itself but the shaking of his head. The night had been rough, the latent effects of using his neuro collars jamming capability days prior had caught up with him and made for one hell of a headache and bad dreams. He reached down to his ankle pocket to grab a pack of smokes he had in there, only to remember he wasn't wearing his normal combat pants of similar attire. Instead, he had on some form-fitting khakis, matched with a grey polo shirt. Obviously, he wasn't one for fashion but had had some help picking out something more business casual for the flight and initial days outside the event.
Now realizing he was smokeless, Wall let out a sigh and put his head in his hands, rubbing his temples.
"Mister Wall?" A voice came up from his right.
He stopped what he was doing and looked over, squinting for a moment as some of the reflective light from the sun caught his eyes. A white-haired woman stood before him in a black suit with a white undershirt, her red tie contrasting everything to a level that all but screamed "I'm a professional." She was carrying a black duffle bag, and he noted that she surely stood a good head taller than him.
"Uh, yes, can I help you?" He asked, opting to not stand up to greet this Woman just yet.
"I am AK-15, I have been assigned to you directly for the duration of this visit to Germany." She stook out her hand.
Wall looked at the hand for a moment before standing up. He grabbed it and shook, confirming the doll was indeed taller than him. "I didn't know I was getting another team member, what's going on?" He let go of her hand and placed his inside his pockets.
"Miss Helianthus had two of her private security members go down due to a virus. Per our SOP she needed another body, and I am best trained for the situation and have been modified internally to get through some of the sensors present at the event location, by all accounts they will think I am Human." She hadn't even stopped to breathe for that whole explanation, which wasn't technically weird since she didn't need to. When she did stop, she placed her duffle bag right next to Wall's luggage.
"It seems you have not been notified of the addition; I will report this up my chain of command accordingly so that a future mishap like this will not occur."
He blinked, honestly dumbfounded by the strict level of professionalism shown by this doll.
"W-Well," He stammered, "Take a seat Fifteen, or do you have another name you prefer?"
The doll shook its head and sat down near to where he was originally, he joined her as she started to speak again. "AK Fifteen is my general designation, but for ease of use you may call me Fifteen or whatever else you deem necessary for the situation." She sat upright, with no slouch or other more human mannerisms.
"Ill stick with fifteen for now until I think of something better, sound good?" He stuck out a balled hand, waiting for her to tap it.
"Understoo-" she stopped and looked down at the hand, then grabbed it and shook.
Wall let out a laugh as she shook his fist, causing her to stop. "That's…" He regained himself, "That's not what you do with that." He grabbed her hand using his free one and took it off his fist, then formed hers into a ball. "Fist bump, its like a handshake but less professional, but more common."
"Fist bump?" She looked back down again, and tapped her fist against his.
"Yep, just like that." He smiled and nodded, only then realizing he missed out a prime opportunity to play with the doll by faking how hard she tapped.
There was another period of silence between the two, broken only once when Wall commented on the maintainers finally arriving to set the aircraft up. As the ground crew went about their check list, he kept noticing glances at him from AK15. He ignored them for the first several times, but finally got fed up.
"You good Fifteen? Keep looking this way, gonna make a man feel some sort of thing." He said, mostly joking.
"Your neuro-link collar." She said flatly.
Not even gonna dance around it huh?
"I've seen the proficiency reports on your team, with Miss Helian's approval ofcourse, would you be willing to data link with me? Anything that can give us an edge in a possible skirmish would certainly be beneficial to the overall objective at hand." Without even hearing his approval, she moved her long white hair from behind her neck, and let it rest on her right shoulder. "My understanding on the collar is that its line of sight based, with some other capabilities that seem to be rather secret."
He stared blankly at her for a minute, then shrugged. No harm no foul in it. "If you want to, no reason not to. We can go through the benchmark while we wait." He reached over to his luggage and began to fish out the USB connector. "Yeah its LOS, can do some other fun stuff, had to sign some things to not talk about the rest, should expire in a couple of years though."
"Interesting," AK15 cocked her head as Wall pulled out the cord and began untangling it. "My previous handlers remarked on its usefulness during the War."
Wall plugged his end into his collar, and twitched slightly as his left eye notified him of the action. "Previous handlers? You worked outside of IOP?" He motioned for the doll to lean in, and she did so. He connected the opposite end into the small slot at the base of her neck. Her head mimicked the twitch to had prior, and the UI on his end populated the specifications of the Doll. Undenounced to her, most of her information was immediately transferred to his end. It would be something he could go over on a later date.
"Prior models with different task, my current model, designated AK Fifteen zero three two one, is owed, operated, and maintained by G&K and the licenses was leased out to IOP for manufacturing."
"Cool stuff, those handlers NGOs or what?" He initiated the link and immediately felt his collar heat up. It wasn't uncomfortable, just noticeable.
She shook her head, the cable connecting the two danced in the middle. "Retired Spetznaz, formed their own company to assist those displaced from the war and under immediate threats of the ELID." She glanced at him again, "I hope there's not an issue on that front Mister Wall." A hint of real concern came with it.
"Not unless you want there to be. Did a stint a couple years back with a NGO, French, Polish, and a couple of FSB guys, all of us vets. Some SAR into Africa, same deal with the ELID, nasty business that. Gotta give props where its due for the guys and gals that go and fuck with them." A green text block appeared in his eye, 'COMPLETE.'
"Ok," He tugged out the cord on his end, then reached over and pulled hers out gently. "Ready for a test?"
"Zadnyaya chast' moyey shei-" The dolls native Russian came out and she stopped immediately, a confused look grew on her face as she grabbed her throat, one of those more human reactions programmed into her.
"Don't worry, give it a second, just some software stuff…" The doll lowered her hand and made eye contact with him, the look from before completely gone. They stared at eachother for a moment.
"Ok try talking now."
"Is that a common reaction from the data link?" She brushed her hair back behind her back.
"With the newer generation of dolls and stuff yeah." Before he could continue his PDA buzzed, he leaned towards AK15 and pulled it out of his pocket. Its was a message from Helian, she was on her way with the UMP sisters in tow.
"The rest of the crew is coming over now," he leaned back over and stuffed the PDA away. "Ready for the test?"
AK15 nodded again.
'DO YOU SEE THIS MESSAGE'- WALL
"Yes I see it." She responded verbally.
"No, think about the message, then say a response internally." Wall tapped on his head, signifyingly to keep it inside.
She nodded again.
'I SEE THE MESSAGE' - AK15
'GOOD. IM GOING TO ADD YOU TO MY TEAMS LINK. THEN WE WILL GO OVER UI STUFF.' – WALL
'UNDERSTOOD.' – AK15
He did as he said, and immediately IDW and AK47 bombarded them questions on who the new addition was. Several of the messages were rather on the vulgar side.
"Ignore them, they're like a bunch of puppies that just saw someone new come into their house." He could've sworn he saw Fifteen crack a smile from that.
"Alright next is shared UI," He looked at one of the maintainers refueling the plane, and blinked on him. "Do you see the guy I'm looking at?"
"He is highlighted yes, interestingly enough that ping automatically activated my rangefinder and threat assessment."
"Yeah if you got the software built into you it will do that. Moving on to the next phase." He blinked again and the highlight around the maintainer disappeared. "I'm gonna use one of your eyes, you'll still have access to it, but you may feel the bandwidth difference, it shouldn't have any effects on your capabilities."
Wall closed his left eye fully, some confirmations appeared, and he accepted them. Then, as disorienting as it was, he started to see out of AK15's left eye.
"Im going to highlight someone through your side now, any issues on your end?" He asked, opting to cover his right eye with his hand so he wouldn't get sick. The downside to the whole ability was that he couldn't move the whole eye, it wasn't his, and wherever the doll looked was where he looked. A limited cone did exist though, and he could pick things from it.
"A jump from thirty percent to thirty three percent in my CPU is all that's been detected."
"Good stuff, do me a favor and look at the plane."
She did as told and his body swayed involuntary. He picked another maintainer and highlighted him.
"Got him?" He asked.
"Yes, same as before."
He terminated the link completely and blinked as his left eye started to work again, albeit slowly. "Great, everything checks out. Obviously there some more benefits from the connection. I can have you linked with other dolls and each of you can have a status on eachother, I can downlink intel stuff and any ISR nonsense. We can do some more work on the plane if you'd like."
"If it doesn't add on any additional stress to you, I would like that. My software is advanced and I was made with a combat stance in mind unlike many other T-Dolls, but older technology like yours is still something that amazes me."
"Soviets had something like it back in the day, killed their operators too fast though, they defunded the project pretty fast from what I understand, especially when SF became a seller for them." A shout from far behind the two ended the conversation, both of them looked back. It was Helian with UMP9 and 45 right behind her. The dolls carried two black duffle bags each and wore their normal outfits. Helian wore a longer black skirt and red long sleeved button up tucked into the skirt, all she brought with her was a single suitcase.
"She's supposed to not stand out." AK15 remarked, seemingly disappointed.
Wall turned and looked at Fifteen for a moment, then smiled. "I think the two of us are gonna get along Fifteen."
GERMANY / Hotel De Rome, Berlin / 05AUG62 2145 LOCAL
The flight to Germany went by quickly, once on the ground the group had been met by the G&K security team who then escorted them to their awaiting vehicles. UMP9 & 45 had been met by HK416, who seemed more than angry about this that or another. They had been out of ear shot, so Wall wasn't able to hear the conversation. 404 then made off to whatever location they were going too, a message had been sent to Wall by '45, insuring him that both of 404's jobs would be accomplished.
The drive from Berlin-Brandenberg Airport to the Hotel was on the longer side due to traffic. During of which, Wall found himself remarking more than once on how fast and well the Germans rebuilt their City. Even after the global economic collapse and the war, Berlin still stood tall, and one could even think that the end of all humanity wasn't on the horizon.
Once at their location, a Hotel De Rome, Wall & AK15 set themselves up and dropped off their items in their rooms. To his surprise AK15 would be stationed inside his, as it was right next to Helian's room. She assured him it wouldn't be an issue, as all her recharging items had been installed inside. Helian doubled down on it and informed him last minute that he had been assigned the room because of a "couples discount." She was laughing when she told him, and got a kick out of it when AK15 had inquired if she had to play the part of a significant other.
The later half of the day, leading into the night, was spent going over the security of the Hotel with a group of the security staff, then going off to the Pergamonmuseum and talking with the Head of Security about the location itself. Several other individuals were apart of that conversation, details belonging to other dignitaries and members of higher society. Wall chatted with a few and introduced his assistant Miss Fifteen. One individual from a British Petroleum company had invited the two back to dinner, but they politely declined and eventually made their way back to the Hotel.
Wall had sent a message to their driver to head back without them. The two left the Pergamonmuseum on foot thanks to AK15's request to get a lay of the land. The summer air of a German night was soothing and reminded Wall of simpler times that were now far behind him.
"Mister Wall?"
The trace that had taken hold left him immediately. He looked over to AK15, who was now walking on his right side as the two traversed the rather short distance back to Hotel De Rome. "What's up?" He asked back, rotating his shoulders as he did so, causing his tucked in shirt to come undone. The concealed 1911' becoming visible for a second.
"You seemed rather removed from the objective. Is everything fine? Your vitals appear normal overall."
"Just thought I'd enjoy the night air for a moment. I didn't miss something important, did I?"
"No," She said rather quickly. "It was something I simply picked up on. I haven't detected any possible hostile signals or staging areas as of this moment. As one could say, all is quiet on the western front, yes?"
Wall turned his head and caught her eye, he gave her a smile. "A fan of the book huh? Pretty sure the kid died right before they said that at the end of the movie."
"Paul Baumer was his name. But yes, even I have interest in other things save armed conflict. I spend some free time during charging periods reading novels and accounts related to the first world war." Her sentence ended right as a rather intoxicated couple passed by. The two were so disconnected from the world around them that they almost bumped into AK15.
Wall gently pulled her by the waist closer to him, so that the impact never came. As the couple passed, Wall let her go again, putting his hands in his pockets.
"OUTBOUND SIGNAL DETECTED. ORIGIN POINTING TO ONE OF THE TWO THAT JUST PASSED US." – AK15
The message blipped in his eye.
"DO WE CONFRONT?" – AK15
"Sometimes knowing is just enough." Wall said as he continued to walk forward, opting to not glance behind him. He was happy AK15 had picked up on that, because he sure as hell hadn't noticed anything initially. But as he played the memory back, something was off about the female. She smelled different, her gait didn't make sense. He glanced over at AK15 again.
"SHE WASN'T HUMAN WAS SHE?" – WALL
"DOLL, SERVESTA TYPE MAKE, PLEASURE MODEL, ID-21900219, PROGRAMMED NAME IRIS, OUTBOUND SIGNAL NOT VERY WELL ENCRYPTED, STANDBY." – AK15
Wall let out a light breath, AK15 was so far one of the most advanced humanoid doll he had worked with. Sure his normal team was alright everything considered, but something about the upfront effectiveness from AK15 pleased him. No boring back stories, no programed irrational emotions. It reminded him of the Type one androids the US tried to field near the end of the war.
"ORGANIZED CRIME. LOW THREAT. MESSAGE AS FOLLOWS…..BABE! SOME MORE RICH COUPLES WALKING AT NIGHT! PROBABLY FOR THAT PARTY TOMORROW! WE CAN SCORE IF WE PLAY IT SMART TOMORROW! ILL GRAB WHAT I CAN OFF THIS CHUMP AND MEET YOU LATER! LOVE YOU!" – AK15
"Well, that's rather boring." Wall said with a shrug.
"Agreed, I am not one for ruining our luck, but part of me was hoping we'd have some action before the nights end." She placed her hands behind her back, "But tomorrows winds will blow tomorrow, won't they?"
"If you trying to impress me with your intellectual reach of literary works, you already have Miss Fifteen."
She tilted her head, "Was that from something? I was under the assumption that I was being original."
He smiled, "I assumed it was from something, but if not, you'd make quite the scholar type if you ever moved on from this gig."
"Ill make note of that, Mister Wall."
GERMANY / Hotel De Rome, Berlin / 06AUG62 1745 LOCAL
The night prior, what had been left of it, went by uneventfully. AK15 and Wall had made their way back to their hotel room without any more disturbances. Wall had passed on the message the two had intercepted to the G&K ground team. With a final perimeter check-up, they retired to their room, both of them making sure their respective suits were presentable for tomorrow.
Then day broke, and Wall had made note of the fact he got a full eight hours of sleep for the first time in a very long time, at least one unaided by drugs. Helianthus had taken the ground team to a meeting earlier, and left AK15 and Wall to make any final preparations for the day. The two spent that time going over vehicles, routes, escapes, and other things.
Then the text came.
"Let's get there by six alright? I'm on my way back."
Helian and spoke to them for the first time in hours.
So, they did as asked, the two dawned their suits. Both of them had been issued a composite, slim fit second chance vest. Forgoing any sense of privacy, the two undressed and dressed in the same room back-to-back. He wouldn't admit it to anyone, but Wall was again reminded how nice is was to have that sense of professionalism with someone. As if the they had been working together for years, they turned to face each other once done.
"How do I look?" Wall asked his partner.
AK15 gave him a once over, then stepped in and started adjusting his tie. "Dark blue suit, grey undershirt, brown wingtips, it's a little so job like in my honest opinion, but I didn't pick them." She finished with his tie and turned around, pointing to her hair, "Mind setting this up?"
"Well, that's a nice way of saying not great I guess." Wall grabbed a hairband that was on AK15's wrist and pulled her hair back gently. "Helian picked it out, at the mercy of the boss I am." After a moment of playing around with the hairband, he finally fixed her hair up into a ponytail. "Ok looks good back here."
AK15 took a step forward, then moved the ponytail over her right shoulder. Right as she finished a knock came from the door.
"Probably the boss." Wall said as he walked over to the dresser and grabbed his 1911 and four spare magazines. "Mind getting it?"
AK15 did as asked and made her way to the door. Opening it she was indeed presented with their employer.
"Fifteen, do you mind?" Helian said as she gestured to be let in.
The doll nodded simply in response and moved out of the way, closing the door behind her. AK15 then made her way past Helian and to her own weapon.
"You ready Mister Wall?" Helian asked.
Wall, who had just finished stowing away his weapon and ammunition into his waist band, turned around to meet her. For a split second he was taken aback, Helian was wearing a deep blue empire-waist dress. She was by all accounts, stunning, with her long black braided hair to the front and paler parts of her body accented perfectly by the color choice.
Even though he had only been off guard for less than a second, he had been caught.
"Yes yes, quite nice isn't it?" She hiked the right side of her dress up, exposing some of her leg and the SIG that was strapped to her thigh. "Ready for any unwanted visitors aswell." She smiled and let the dress fall back down to her knees. "I told you not to worry didn't I? We fit the match." Her smile disappeared, and she pulled out something from inside her dress. "This was the part I didn't tell you about. Put this on." She extended a balled fist.
Wall squinted, then put his open hand under hers. She dropped the item inside, and Wall raised an eyebrow as he started to play with the golden ring.
"You're not proposing, are you?" He asked, watching as she pulled out a matching ring and placed in on her ring finger.
"You wish," she shot back.
Making me think I was sorta
"Put yours on, if anyone ask you are my fiancé." She looked up at him, waiting.
With a sigh, he did as told. Something felt strange as he slid a ring onto his finger, he pushed that feeling deep away, it didn't need to come up now. "Any reason for this?"
"Yes, while you make a slightly good PSD, you make an even better fake husband. The last eight of these I've gone too has had me surrounded by old men trying to get with me. While I don't mind the attention," she paused to flip her hair to the other shoulder, "They prevent me from doing what I need to do."
"Alright then, so Ill play the part of brooding fiancé while you do your good little part at making good with the rest of the world then?" He stepped in close to her before she could speak. He grabbed her hand, and her waist, and turned her around. "Fifteen? Picture of the newlyweds please."
"Wai- no don't!" Helian let out.
It was too late, AK15 had taken a picture with her eye, and sent it too Wall, who immediately sent it over his teams comms.
He let go of Helian with a laugh and was met with a swift punch to his kidney that actually hurt. She yelled something at him playfully, but the incoming barrage of message from IDW and M200 took his attention away.
"I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT I KNEW IT!" – IDW
"I LOSE MY BODY AND YOU GET MARRIED?" – M200
AK47 had seen the message but hadn't responded yet.
READ BELOW:
I'm calling it with that. Sorry to anyone who was enjoying the story.
Life, job, and some other things have gotten in the way of me writing for this and literally everything else I had planned out. One day I may hop back on for this series, or maybe another, but for the next several months I won't be able to produce anything that hasn't already been 90% complete.
Uncertain Futures started out as a funny little one-shot that I didn't think was going to go anywhere, but quickly enough people started to get into it. This whole story was brought into reality by a good friend, 15Zero and his series, both his OG GFL fic (now removed) and his new one.
Thank you, again, for taking time out of your day to read this. Below I have all the planned-out chapters that "could've" been for the series, just to show you I wasn't dead in the water with ideas and that's why I'm popping chalk.
