Fun Fact: This is the first episode to show Eda's relationship with Rain

Luz began this adventure by showing Azura an old video she recorded on her phone. It showed a young King Clawthorne with a duck-patterned sock stuck on his nose. After a few seconds, King triumphantly ripped the ducky sock off his face and tore it to shreds. Luz questioned why King wanted to see her, prompting the young Titan to hop onto a table where he'd assembled a collage of demon photos. He said Luz hadn't learned much about demons yet, so he was ready to teach her Demon 101. He started talking about the most powerful demon, the Snaggleback, when Luz interrupted with a color filter and some stickers.

"I recognize now how ironic this video is considering King's not even a demon at all, but it's still one of the most adorable things I've ever recorded," Luz said proudly.

"But the demon information is still wrong," Azura pointed out. "The Snaggleback is the most powerful demon!? That guy's less than 2 feet tall and he couldn't hurt anyone."

Luz shrugged. "His ancestors were dangerous, I guess. Anyway, the lesson ended there because it started to rain. This was before I knew what rain here was like, so naturally I ran right outside."

"Oh no!" shouted Azura, worried. "You got burned!"

"Only a tiny bit, like a single drop," said Luz. "Right after that, Eda ran over and shoved me inside, which hurt but not as much as more rain would've."

"Human rain is much nicer, but it's really cold," said Azura.

"I don't care about coldness," said Peony. "Human rain makes plants grow and that makes it magical."

"And apparently there's an old human trope that water melts witches," said Luna. "Miss Lilith thinks that's just a corruption of information that passed from here to there."

Dratina raised an eyebrow. "What's this about water melting witches?"

"Ooh! Ooh! I can explain this!" said Hal. "In the Human Realm there's this famous book The Wonderful Wizard of Ozwhere this wicked witch is defeated when she gets splashed by a bucket of water and just melts away into nothingness."

"That's… really messed up," said Lobo after a pause.

"Oh, definitely." Hal hadn't lost his enthusiasm. "But the author of that book probably found some of that corrupted information Lilith mentioned and incorporated it into the story."

"That makes sense," said Syl. "Too bad we still don't know what a wizard is."

"And then King put a band-aid on my burn along with one on his nose, so together we'd be Boo-Boo Buddies," said Luz. "I may or may not have fallen over from cuteness overload."

"Understandable," said Azura.

"And at the same time, Eda explained all the weird sorts of weather on the Isles and put up a protection spell so the house wouldn't get damaged. I wished I could be as cool as the Owl Lady one day."

"I guess she failed that goal because she's far cooler than Eda ever was!" shouted Syl.

"Let's add that to the list of things not to tell Eda," said Lobo.

"No, go ahead, tell her. She'd be proud," Peony pointed out.

"I asked why she was called the Owl Lady in the first place. She said it's because she's so wise, Hooty said it's because she coughs up rat bones, and King guessed it's because she's attracted to shiny objects."

Azura suddenly had a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Is she really?"

Luz nodded. "Oh, definitely. Try it out next time you see her. Anyway, we were gonna find out the real reason that night, but I'm getting ahead of myself. The protection took a lot of energy out of Eda so she laid down on the couch to rest. I figured that since she wouldn't be going out to do anything, it was the perfect opportunity for a magic lesson."

Azura made an adorable frowny face: "But you interrupted King's lesson."

"I know," said Luz with an identical frown. "King might not have had a real boo-boo on his face but he had one in his heart."

Azura leaned over and gave her Mami another hug.

Luz smiled and gave Azura a kiss on the forehead. "Thank you, mija."

"'Now I feel bad for King," said Lobo. "Heart boo-boos aren't fun."

"Eda was reeeeeeeeeeally tired but I kept asking her to teach me something," said Luz. "I eventually realized I could tempt her with my sparkly glowing pen. She jumped off of the couch and tried to grab it, but I yanked it away. If she wanted to play with my sparkle thing, she'd have to teach me a magic lesson."

"Ooh, devious."

"Yep," said Luz proudly. "Eda got up and said that I'd need to be able to cast spells on my own before I got a staff, and the most basic beginner spell is creating light, so that's where we'd start. But first there was a little magic theory. Tell me, mija: where does magic come from?"

"The bile sac!" exclaimed Azura happily.

"Uh huh, and the bile sack is connected to…?"

"The heart!"

"And what does my human heart not have?"

"A bile sac!" A few seconds passed before Azura realized the depth of what she said. "Oh, right…"

"Yeah, Eda didn't even think of that either until I pointed it out," Luz admitted. "She wasn't even sure how I could do magic, other than potion brewing I guess. She knew people did magic differently in the past, but she didn't know exactly how."

"But she would know soon, right?" asked Azura.

"That's right, I learned my first glyph that night."

"It's a shame glyphs fell out of favor," said Luna. "They're so cool!" She tapped on a few King-style plant glyphs and ate the magic plants that appeared. "And a source of free food!"

"It's basically just life evolving to the environment it's in," said Dratina. "Developing an internal magic supply made things earlier. Or at least that's how I assume it worked."

"But before that Eda decided to go back to bed. I asked her to do another light spell just so I could record it, and that sapped up the rest of her energy. She collapsed on the ground, absolutely out cold, to the point that I thought I killed her at first." Luz looked rather guilty as she recalled what happened.

Stringbean hissed in confusion.

"Yes, I knew she was tired but right before that I was all like 'One more spell won't kill you, Eda,' and then she just fell over lifelessly," said Luz. "So I feel like my panic was justified. Anyway, me and King dragged Eda up to her room and laid her down in her nest before we went back downstairs. King tried telling me all about this ferocious demon called Smoochy-pie the Sweetie Baby but I was laser-focused on trying to figure out the light spell."

"Smoochy-pie the Sweetie Baby sounds like a fun guy," said Azura.

"I know, right!? But I didn't listen!" Luz loosely wrapped her arms around her stomach. "King asked why I was so adamant about learning magic in the first place and I started saying that no one ever listened to me back home but here I had a chance to be somebody. And then I had the audacity to be all like: 'Do you know what it's like when no one takes you seriously?' As if I wasn't doing exactly that to him!?"

Without any warning, Luz jumped off the couch, ran to the nearest window, opened it, then yelled.

"I'M SORRY KING, I'M SORRY I DIDN'T TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY!"

"I thought I heard her screaming yesterday," said Hal. "I didn't really think much of it though."

"Yeah, Aunt Luz is always dramatic," said Julie. "Screaming like that would've just been a regular Thursday."

"I DO THAT ALL THE TIME TOO!" shouted Melody with a massive grin on her face.

After letting her emotions out, Luz casually walked back to the couch and sat back down.

"Are you okay, Mami?" asked Azura. "You need another hug?"

"No, I'm good now. But muchas gracias for asking, cariño. Anyway, King suggested that if he helped me learn the spell, then we can go back to his lesson, and I quickly agreed to that. He pointed out that he's seen Eda take her elixir every day and when she does, she seems to get a boost of energy. So if we use some of that, then maybe I could make some progress. That's not exactly what her elixir does, of course, and it wouldn't have helped me at all, but from his perspective it was a sound theory."

"It's pretty surprising King lived with Eda for eight years and didn't know about her curse," said Lobo. "Especially since it wasn't exactly private knowledge."

"Yeah, you'd think some of the Emperor's Coven scouts would taunt about it when they tried to arrest her," said Peony, agreeing with her brother.

"I guess it was more of her closed-off attitude," said Julie. "If she thought King didn't need to know, then he didn't need to know… which is a really stupid line of reasoning because King was bound to be attacked by the Owl Beast at some point."

"So yeah, King snuck up to Eda's room and swiped the elixir," said Luz. "And in fairness, Eda really should've already drank her daily dose, but I guess the story would've been less interesting that way. Though it would've made the bridge duel a lot more horrifying for me specifically."

"Maybe Grandma Eda had a busy day and forgot," Azura suggested.

"I guess that's possible," said Luz with a shrug. "So King met me in the kitchen and gave me the elixir, but before I could do anything with it some thunder outside startled me and I dropped the potion bottle, spilling it anywhere. And right after that, all the lights went out and Hooty cried out in pain. We ran to the living room and saw that a big beast tore Hooty's door off its hinges and knocked him out. King assumed it was the Snaggleback 'cause it supposedly feeds during rainstorms, but now we know what it really was…"

"Eda…?"

Azura gulped as Luz nodded. The young Noceda had seen a couple of photos and some artistic depictions of Eda's pre-harpy curse, but it was hard to think of the grandmotherly old woman as a feral beast. "She transformed in her sleep?"

"Kind of," said Luz. "From what I understand, the process of transforming wakes her up so she probably would've been fine if we hadn't taken the elixir, but it would've been a close call."

"The Owl Beast would be interesting to study," said Syl, who quickly noticed the glare Luna gave him. "From a purely academic standpoint! Not like Belos studied your mom!" There was a long pause. "I should just stop talking now."

"Yes." Luna's tone was insistent.

"There's nothing the Owl Beast can do that Puddles can't do better," Dratina added.

"Can she become a harpy?" asked Azura.

"If she really wants to!" said Melody.

"The beast leapt through the upstairs window, and King was a little more excited than he should've been, since this was a great way to see a demon up close. Especially because we thought we had to save Eda. We grabbed some improvised weapons and armor from Eda's trash pile and ventured bravely into the unknown." Luz paused for a few seconds. "Actually, bravely is an exaggeration but I like to think we were brave. We went into Eda's room and saw she wasn't there and there were slash marks on the pillows. Naturally we assumed the worst."

Azura started rocking back and forth slightly in fear, even though she knew the danger was long over.

"King ran out of the room to get his demon book but I didn't hear him leave so I panicked even more when I realized I was alone. I ran out of the room to find him and lost my shoe in the process. And then immediately after that he came back and found my shoe and assumed I was eaten too. King grabbed the shoe and noticed something hiding in the closet. He ran forward to get the drop on the beast… and found the Snaggleback. The real, tiny, harmless Snaggleback."

"Huh? I'm confused," said Azura, awkwardly scratching her head.

"Yeah, it turned out the real Snaggleback snuck into the house to get away from the rain. I guess feeding in the rain is another thing the books got wrong," said Luz. "But the actual beast showed up and ate the Snaggleback and nearly got King but he was faster and escaped. Meanwhile, I was still hiding in Eda's room and when King ran past I grabbed him and quickly closed the door. And when I stopped to put my shoe back on— that's when we noticed the note."

"The note?"

"'An elixir a day keeps the curse at bay.' King found half of it when he got the elixir and the other half was stuck to the bottom of my foot."

"Oh." Azura imagined how scary this situation must've been for her Mami to experience. "Did everything start to make sense then?"

Luz made a so-so motion with her hand. "Eh, mostly. King figured it out first— that the beast is Eda and she needs the elixir to not turn into it. And wouldn't you know, at that exact moment Eda tore through the door, giving us our first good look at the beast's face. It had huge teeth and black lifeless eyes, but there was no mistaking that this was Eda."

"That's gotta be traumatizing," Hal muttered.

"From what I've heard, this is probably nothing compared to what comes later," said Luna.

"Yeah, all those struggles and Luz overcame them all like the good watch she is!" exclaimed Syl, leading to a round of cheers and applause from everyone at the table.

"Besides, she's probably right that it was better for her to learn about the curse early on," Julie noted, to everyone else's agreement.

"She lunged at us and I dropped my phone and somehow the flash on the camera went off and she reeled away, covering her eyes in pain."

"Oh!" said Azura. "Owls are nocturnal so Owl Beast Eda was really sensitive to light!"

"Muy inteligente, mija." Luz beamed at her daughter. "Me and King ran out of there while Eda was distracted and hid in a shielded rooftop area with some plants. Eda almost caught us again but I sneakily tossed a tin can toward the exit of the room and that got her to leave us alone for a while. King really blamed himself for what happened since all he wanted was for me to appreciate him and what he likes, but it wasn't all his fault. I could've been more receptive to his lesson."

"Mami!" Azura cried out in alarm.

"I know, I know, I shouldn't blame myself, but really this one could've been avoided. Anyway, I suggested we finish the lesson. The best teacher in the world would know how to stop Eda from teaching us— when I said that he ran to me and gave me an adorable giggle hug."

"I want an adorable giggle hug," Julie said quietly.

Within a few seconds Melody leaned over and attached herself to the older girl with a firm grip.

"Ah! No! Let go!" Julie shouted.

"Never!" said Melody in between giggles.

"King said we should use my phone again, but the light got busted when I dropped it, so I'd have to figure out that light spell. I looked at the video I took and saw that it kinda glitched. A symbol appeared in the middle of Eda's spell circle."

"The Titan himself was talking to you!" shouted Azura excitedly.

Luz nodded proudly. "I didn't know that at the time, but yes. The Titan chose to show magic to his son's protectors, and glyph magic cometh from The Titan's heart, thus the lesson from the beginning comes full circle."

Everyone looked at Azura with puzzled expressions.

"'Cometh?'" asked Hal.

Azura shrugged. "I don't know, it's what Mami said."

"I drew the glyph on a leaf just so I could get a better look at it." Luz drew the glyph on some paper so her daughter could see it. "I don't know what compelled me to tap it, but I did. The leaf folded into itself and formed a ball of warm light I could hold in my hands. I did magic! And I don't think I can properly convey how amazing that felt."

"Maybe I'll feel it when I discover a new glyph combo!" Azura grabbed the paper and began drawing on the opposite side.

Luz smiled. "I'm sure you will, cariño. But you should know it takes trial and—"

"Wow, I got it on the first try!"

"What!?"

Luz looked down and saw a mini laser light show projecting off the paper. It lasted for about half a minute before the paper crumpled into nothingness. "Do it again! Do it again! I didn't see the combo!"

"Okay!" Azura quickly drew her new combo: 5 light glyphs connected by two opposing triangles. The young hybrid tapped the combo and the laser light show reappeared.

Luz gasped in excitement, grabbed Azura in a tight hug, and spun her around real fast. ¡Esto es increíble!" Then, just as fast as she picked her daughter up, she put her down and grabbed her scroll. "Who am I gonna tell first!? Amity? No, King!"

GoodWitchLuz: KING!

GoodWitchLuz: AZURA JUST FOUND A NEW GLYPH COMBO!

GoodWitchLuz: (‿)

KingofClawthornes: Cool! What's it look like?

Luz turned back toward Azura. "Can you draw it one more time? I need to take a picture."

Azura did as she was promoted and Luz snapped a pic of the combo.

KingofClawthornes: Neat

"What!?" Syl shouted. "You discovered a new glyph combo!? You've gotta show us right now! You shoulda started with that!"

"Yeah, yeah, draw it!" said Peony.

"Alrighty." Azura pulled a sheet of paper out of her backpack and drew her newly-discovered combo, then tapped it to display the light show.

"Whoa!" said Hal.

"So cool!" exclaimed Lobo.

"You're incredibly talented, Zura," said Dratina. "I'm sure you're gonna do great things one day."

Azura blushed pretty hard but managed to hide it decently. "Thank you… You're really talented too."

Dratina now had a mashing blush. "Thanks… I mean you're welcome… uh… continue please."

"Alright, where were we?" asked Luz as she sat back down.

"You discovered the light glyph," said Azura.

"Oh right. So King and I knew how to subdue Eda, but we'd need a much bigger ball of light. I went to the living room and drew a huge glyph on the wall while King went to find Eda. He used the sparkly pen to catch her attention and lure her to our trap. That giant burst of light knocked her out. But we hadn't planned what to do afterward."

"Oh."

"Yeah, it was pretty awkward," Luz admitted. "But eventually King and I rummaged through the house and found another elixir. We fed it to her and dragged her up to her nest. After a few minutes she woke up and was back to normal but I really wasn't paying attention 'cause I was so busy drawing light glyphs. I did hear her cough the Snaggleback back out though."

"I bet being swallowed was terrifying for him," Azura muttered.

"Yeah, I don't doubt it. Anyway, Eda called me over and explained to me and King how she was cursed when she was younger and takes the elixir to not transform into that beast. As long as nobody steals the elixir again, she'd be fine." A frown appeared on Luz's face. "That's what she believed at the time. The curse started to grow stronger within a couple of weeks."

"Oh no!" Azura was scared for a few seconds but quickly remembered Eda is fine now. "She got better by sharing the curse with Aunt Lilith, right?"

"Uh huh, but no spoilers."

"Oops!"

"So that was that," said Azura. "Wait. Julie, what are you writing?"

"The Eda list!" said the green-haired witch excitedly. "Here's where it's at now:

*DON'T tell her apple blood tastes like crap

*DO talk about how cool Luz is

*DON'T steal her elixir

*DO flash shiny objects in front of her

Pretty good, don't you think?" She looked down to where Melody was clinging on to her. "Seriously Mel, you can let go now."

"I'll think about it," said the youngest girl.

"Alright, so next up is the fabled Covention! It's gonna be an intense one!"
