Ch 5
Stephanie sat in the enlistment room and the first thing she noticed was a large sign that read: IT IS ILLEGAL TO FALSIFY YOUR ENLISTMENT FORM.
They found out. Stephanie thought with dread. This not good. She had to get out. Now.
Unfortunately, before she could even stand back up, she saw the officer and a man with a suit and folder.
"Thank you." the man said and the officer nodded, then left, closing the curtain.
"Dr. Abraham Erskine. I represent the Strategic Scientific Reserve."
"Stephanie Rogers."
She took another look at Dr. Erskine, then wondered more and more about who he was.
"Where are you from?" Stephanie asked curiously.
"Queens. 73rd Street and Utopia Parkway." Dr. Erskine replied. "Before that, Germany. This troubles you?"
"No." Stephanie replied.
"Where are you from, Ms. Rogers?" Dr. Erskine asked calmly. "Is it New Haven? Or Paramus? Five exams in five different cities."
"That might not be the right file." she said nervously. Dr. Erskine shook his head and sat down in front of her.
"No, it's not the exams I'm interested in. It's the five tries. Do you want to kill Nazis?"
"Is this a test?"
"Yes."
Stephanie took a deep breath before telling him the real reason why she wanted to serve. "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from."
"Well, there are already so many big men fighting this war." Dr. Erskine replied with a chuckle. "Maybe what we need now is a little girl. I can offer you a chance. Only a chance."
"I'll take it." Stephanie said with confidence and determination.
"Good." Dr. Erskine replied as they walked out. "So where is the little girl from? Actually?"
"Brooklyn." Stephanie replied.
"Congratulations, soldier." Dr. Erskine said as he stamped Stephanie's form, then walked off.
"I did it." Stephanie said to herself. "I'm finally going to do my part."
