Chapter 7
The Calm Before the Storm
Leah was always the fucking heroine of the story. Missus Harry Potter the Chosen One Prophecy Child Evil-slayer Person - no scar to be famous for though, her face was as perfect as their mother's used to be. To her credit she did defeat a few evil warlocks back in her younger days. Now she was a retired Guardian along with the other four. Red flaming hair just like the fires burning in hell itself and a temper to match made her quite the force to be reckoned with, not to mention she had to lead four other crazy bitches. Nama knew it couldn't have been easy. She knew her sisters were insane.
Okay, maybe not insane. Perhaps eccentric was a better word for it.
Nera always had a fucking stick up her ass. Fucking Ph.D and everything, so she became the doctor of the family. Fuckin' terrible healer though. Good thing they had Mia to do that shitty job. Nama wasn't one to bow to any force or authority, not even Leah, but Nera really came the closest to scaring her a little out of all her sisters. Nera was one of those women who held a grudge for eternity, who fussed over the color of the curtains and ate according to a strict diet of boiled seaweed and soybeans, maybe some calamari on a rainy day.
Nama liked to call Kendra a hippie. Kendra hated it and always inquired why Nama would say such a thing. Nama would snort. Duh. Because she was a fucking hippie. It's weird how Kendra and Nera ended up being twins, they shared a face but everything else was different down to the pace at which their fingernails grew and the amount of sugar they drank in their tea. Nama was just kidding. Nera didn't drink tea and Kendra was a fucking hippie. Fuckin' talking to animals and throwing boulders over mountains for fun. Daft, she was. Looney.
Ruby was hardcore, so she and Nama tended to have a lot of fun together. They both called Kendra a hippie. When you thought about it, they had so much in common. Of course, there was the fact that Ruby was a maniacal sociopath, but Nama was raised not to discriminate. Kendra would say otherwise, but who cared? She was a fucking hippie. Ruby knew how to party! Yes, it did usually involve violence and blood, maybe a few dead bodies and electrified corpses, but hey, a good time was a good time.
Amalia. Ah, little angel. So innocent and fucking adorable. Nama loved her, but in actuality Amalia was a priss. Leah's little princess growing up and she could do no wrong. Amalia would accidentally destroy the temple's garden by setting off an accidental hurricane and Leah would buy her a fucking ice-cream. If Nama forgot a window open in the Portal Halls then Leah would call her the spawn of the devil. Freaking asshole. But whatever, Amalia was grown up now, just so fucking mature and ladylike like gag me with a spoon ugh darling pass the crumpets HAHAHAHAHA.
And god fucking alone knew where the hell Vera was. Probably planning world domination like always, cooking something up that was sure to be fuckin' epic and kill losts of people and then Nama, Mia and Razu ended up taking care of it because Vera used to be their caretaker growing up blah blah blah. The whole family was so sensitive about Vera, as if it was some big fucking scandal. Nama, on the other hand, was just impressed that only one sister ended up being evil - especially when you look at the other nutjobs she had to live with. Yeah, and it's been a few years so Vera was bound to be spring up somewhere. It was only a matter of when and where.
Nama could count herself lucky she had Mia and Razu to balance her out, because god alone knew she was just as weird as her sisters. Mia had no stick up her ass like Nera. Mia was actually fucking useful and didn't care about fucking curtains. And when it came to Razu, well, Nama was just grateful she didn't turn out a hippie like fucking Kendra.
Nama had no idea why she was being more cynical than usual today. Perhaps it was the cloudy weather, the fact that she was having bad hairday or maybe those brats fucking ran off again which caused Leah to blow like a volcano and now Nama was stuck trying to find their asses and she was so done with this babysitting bullshit-
"Nama? What are you doing out here? You know no one's really allowed here ever since Amalia's last hurricane accident."
Nama stood up from beside the fountain and rounded on Razu. Her sister stood innocently bewildered while Nama tried to reorganize her thoughts and attempted to recount what she was thinking of in the first place. Oh wait. Oh, yeah. That's right. Everything.
Nama wrinkled her nose in distaste at her negligence. "So? I can't burp mini-hurricane's. I can sit here if I want."
Razu shrugged in semi-agreement. Nama could see she didn't want to argue and generally Razu avoided conflict in any way whatsoever. That was usually Nama's calling card and Mia was left to settle arguments and keep the peace.
Nama retook her seat by the fountain and gestured for Razu to join her. Her sister was already taking a seat next to the fiery redhead and released a loud sigh upon doing so. Nama felt her sister's gloomy mood rub off on her and felt annoyed instantly.
"Stop being so depressed, would ya?" Nama voiced, knowing her irritation showed on her face. Razu huffed, used to her sister's loudmouth.
"I'm worried about Mia," Razu admitted, her wavy hair shadowing her emerald eyes. "I've been tracking her spiritual energy in the other world. The one moment she's moving at a steady pace and the next she's going at it really fast. I even felt incredible elemental force for a moment, as if she was in battle. Then I felt her stop completely for a few days and now her spirit is moving and she's calm and steady."
Nama looked at her sister and blinked. "So what the hell are you so worried about?"
"She's obviously running in to trouble over there. And she's not with the girls anymore, I can feel it. What if she's in real danger?" Razu asked, voice escalating in anxiety. Nama inwardly rolled her eyes. Razu was a real worry-wart and could never just relax. She struggled to be on her own and usually needed to be with either Nama or Mia - preferably both.
Nama inhaled, used to Razu's overreactions. "Calm down, Razu. Are you forgetting who we're talking about? Mia's not pathetic. I mean, she looks pathetic and pretty meek and stuff, but you and I both know she's a badass. And that's one helluva compliment, especially coming from me," Nama explained smugly, playing with the water in the fountain to ease her boredness.
Razy seemed to be put at ease a little, something Nama's fluent confidence tended to do very easily. She smiled a little at Nama's proud words. "Yeah. You're right. I'm still going to check up on her though."
Nama splashed some more water around. "Maybe that's for the best. She's strong, but you never know, you know? And Nera couldn't give any less of a shit."
Razu shot Nama a look. A look that Nama hated.
"You know Nera is just as worried about Mia. Nera loves Mia," Razu tried to remind her for the millionth time.
"Nera loves Nera," Nama spouted back, jerking her hand out of the water of the fountain. Her mood turned foul instantly and Razu knew she was treading on thin ice. Nama was touchy when it came to the older sisters and their indifference to the younger generation of siblings, so much that she was rather bitter because of it. Nonetheless, Nama loved all her sisters, and she hadn't the faintest idea why she was so annoyed with all of them today. Rarely was she reflective. She liked to live life and then forget about the stuff that sucked. It's how she lived, and how she taught the twins.
Razu, still sitting opposite her sister, looked depressed. Nama scrutinized her sister's eyes.
"What's really got you so worried?" Nama asked simply, deciding she was going to ask a second time and neither would she press the matter. She figured Razu just needed to get it out of her system.
WIthout meeting her sister's intense red eyes. Her voice dropped.
"I gazed into the watch glass to try and see if I can find her and see if she was alright. The last two times I saw her, she was with a man. His spirit is overwhelmingly strong, easily stronger than Nera, if not as strong. He looked like a vampire," Razu concluded, running her hand through her hair in frustration. Nama furrowed her eyes.
"That's it? That's what you're worried about? Damn, Razu. Lighten up. Let Mia get some man-booty."
Razu's face turned incredulous. ""'Man-booty'?"
Nama shrugged. "The kids, you know?"
"Mia isn't one to just get ...uh, booty."
Grinning at her sister, Nama raised her hand up to eye level. With a flick of her thumb, her fingertips gave life to a small bouncing flame. Entranced, Razu nearly forgot what she was saying.
"Who knows? She might just surprise us."
Razu seemed sceptical. "There's something else."
Nama suppressed a groan. "It's always something else with you. And when it's something else, it's usually-"
"-Vera," Razu finished for her with a grim tone. Always so damn dramatic. Nama never really got why. "She's on the move. I can feel it."
"That means she's up to something. Duh."
Nama saw her sister twitch in the corner of her eye. "You're always so casual about her. Like it's no big deal she went and turned on all of us and nearly got us all killed."
Cheekily, Nama shot her sister a smirk. "Yeah, because I'm not afraid of her. I don't know whether you remember, but the last two times, I kicked her ass. You know, since Leah is too busy sitting on her ass all day and enjoying retirement. You'd think she could raise her own kids, since she's doing jack squat but nooooo-"
"Be serious, Nama!" Razu insisted, cutting her sister across. Her face actually reddened slightly and Nama sensed a quiver in her body language. "She's getting stronger. Everytime we beat her down, she gets more bitter."
"So? She crawls back into her cave or hole, or wherever the hell she stews in her juices, and when she comes back, we kick her ass and send her back," Nama said, shrugging.
"And what if a day comes when we can't do that anymore?" Razu prodded hotly.
Still playing with the flame in her hand, Nama sighed. "The kids do it. Duh. You think we're training them for nothing? Since you, Mia and I are never going to reach Guardian status, the kids might as well take up the responsibility."
Razu still wasn't convinced. "I think Vera is gathering allies."
"How the hell can you tell?"
Razu shrugged, crossing her arms. "It's what I would've done." There was a moment of silence between the two sisters, a familiar sensation of discomfort and unsettlement that Nama recognized every time the subject came up.
"You're nothing like her, Razz," Nama insisted softly. "And if it makes you feel any better, I'll be on guard from now on. I'll send the twins out to do more patrols in the spots we've sensed her. We can even drop in on Mia tomorrow if you want."
Looking slightly set at ease, Razu nodded numbly. The flame dancing on Nama's finger danced more lively all of a sudden.
The flame went out with a flick of Nama's wrist. Her eyes darkened as they narrowed at the wisp of smoke that followed. "Be ready just in case something happens though. I feel as if it's been quiet for too long."

Mihawk's ship seemed to resemble his sword. Big. Heavy. In conclusion, it looked impractical for the graceful job it was meant to fulfill. Mia boarded with reluctance, though on deck the confidence and swagger of the crew set her somewhat at ease. Being up close, the great vessel was impressive, she would admit. It was neat and everything seemed to be in its place. When she first saw it her pupils constricted in awe. The hull climbed to be three stories high and made from a strong wood. Cannons lined each and was larger than normal. A cannonball with chains attached went in and a death ball with whips came out. The mast peaked well into the air. If she didn't know any better she would've said it was a cross. Ships docking in were like cats to dogs. Mihawk's ship was a titan.
The crew danced around her, rushing to get ready to set sail even when most of them were still under the effect of a painful hangover. Mia stood uncertainly for a minute, not sure where she was supposed to go without getting the crew's way. As if on cue, Mihawk silently appeared beside her. She nearly jumped when he spoke.
"What do you think?" he asked smoothly, a ghost of a smirk hanging on his lips. Her eyes momentarily lingered on them until she swiftly jerked herself back to the present conversation.
"It's definitely better than that coffin you call a boat," she remarked snootily, hoping it would annoy him a little. Instead, he took her bait and chuckled at the remark.
"A coffin, you say? How curious," he said, eyes turning away from her with laughter in them. He walked past her and gestured for her to follow just as she was about to inquire. "Allow me to show you to your room."
She followed him to a door at the end of the front deck that she assumed lead to the berths of the ship. The door looked as if it could be as simple as a closet or storage room. Although when Mihawk opened it, it lead into a long hallway that clearly showcased how big the ship was in the first place. Mia followed Mihawk down the hallway. Along the way she spotted two or three staircases that lead who knows where - she figured she'd explore on her own time once they were on the move and she had time to kill. They reached the end of the hallway and at first Mia thought the room at the very end would be hers, but Mihawk then turned on his heel and opened the door on the right and lead her in.
It was a rather small and cozy room, very simple without character.
"You may stay here. The rest of the crew don't stay in this hallway, so they won't bother you or get in your way," Mihawk said, indicating to the long hallway. "The bathroom is the blue door across from yours, no one else will use it beside you." Mia nodded thoughtfully.
"Thank you. It looks lovely," she said, smiling. He nodded stonily and turned to leave.
"Wait," she interjected, making him stop in his tracks. "Where is your room?"
He raised an eyebrow at her inquiry and she suddenly realized how her question must've sounded. "I-I mean, in case I need to find you?"
Mihawk grinned and tipped his hat, probably trying to hide the laughter in his sharp and intense eyes "I sleep in the room right next to yours, at the end of the hallway. I am on deck more than anything else, so you might want to look there first." He then turned to leave again, but halted in his footsteps once more.
His hesitation had a sudden threatening aura about it. His eyes locked with her and intimidated her sharply as the bore into her. "Don't wake me up unless it is a situation concerning life and death. Otherwise it will become a situation concerning life ...and death." He left with those words hanging thickly in the air. His light footsteps disappeared when he shut the door behind him and left Mia standing in a spooked stupor.
'Did he just threaten me?' Mia thought incredulously. In fact, she was offended. Was he that serious about his napping? Because that was just ridiculous. He was ridiculous. And his hat was stupid. And even though his eyes were scary, they were really attractive and entrancing in a way …
Anyway.
'So I'm on Mihawk's ship, he's taking me to Shanks and he's not going to hand me over to the World Government. I'm still not sure I can trust him, even though he's done a lot to make me comfortable. If I suspect him betraying me, I'm jumping ship. I shouldn't forget how powerful he is.''
Mia took in her room once, throwing a cautious look over her shoulder just in case Mihawk burst through to give her a scare. Unsure, she moved to set her bag on the coffee table and took a seat on her bed. Though it didn't look so, it was very comfortable. Curious, she stood up and walked towards the cabinet. She opened the drawers and non-surprisingly found them empty. She opened the closet and found it empty as well. Sadly she had no other clothes to fill it with.
Mia checked the rest of the room, not really expecting to find anything and mostly just to sate her own boredom. Now that she was here, she wasn't sure whether she was allowed to leave the room. Mihawk hadn't laid down any rules, other than the fact she wasn't allowed to wake him up from his stupid naps. Even if there were some rules, she was going to explore the ship and move around freely. To hell with that.
Mia moved towards the window and peered out of it. The sun was high and the waves were slightly restless. She reached out to them and, again, felt them pull away like a child that had been abused in the past.
They lingered a little longer than last time though, which gave her hope that maybe she could come to an understanding somewhere in the future with the oceans of this world and perhaps figure out what damage Nera may have done.

Mia stayed in her room for the day, passing the time by meditating and doing her routine breathing exercises. Later that evening a crew member knocked on the door and brought her a plate full of dinner and a mug filled with orange juice. The plate consisted of cooked chicken, peas, sweet carrots and a baked potato. She thanked him and ate at the coffee table until the plate was clean and the mug empty. Unsure, she left the plate and mug on the table and figured she would worry about it in the morning.
With a full belly and a proper dinner lingering on her tongue, she took her bag, deciding she wasn't going to go anywhere without it from now on. She left her room and padded back down the hallway until she found the blue door and made her way inside. It was a modest bathroom with a shower and a lavatory, a long mirror against the wall, a sink with white cabinet above it and a basket filled with folded towels. To her delight, she found shampoo in the cabinet after scavenging around again along with an unused bar of soap. Once in the shower, she rubbed herself down until the scent enveloped the room along with the steam. She shampooed her hair twice for added measure and probably lingered in the shower a lot longer than necessary. Having no regrets, she got dressed and left the bathroom feeling cleaner and more refreshed than she ever remembered since entering this world.
She was still too conscious about the smell of her clothes and somewhere along the line she might have to ask Mihawk for a robe so she could use a day to wash her clothes - since living in a cave for a few days had caused her to pick up a scent that smelled like cooked grass. To her dismay, her sweater already had a tear in it and her tank top, being white, was now a smudged and dirtied shade of grey. Her jean was still in tact and her boots were now comfortably walked in, however they were grimey and her pants were full of dirt stains. There was no denying it. She needed to get it cleaned, and urgently too.
When Mia returned to her room, she was surprised to see the plate and mug gone. Also, something was laid out on her bed. After closing the door behind her, she inspected the articles closer. Spread across her bed were three bright and summery dresses. The first was nearly the same colour as her baby blue sweater. It was a simple maxi strapless dress, long and flowing with a strong around the middle to secure the fit. The second dress was mid-length faded orange dress with a blue flower pattern along with a halter top to tie around the neck.
Progressively, the dresses seemed to get shorter. The final dress was a flowing camisole dress, easily her favorite out of the three. The skirt was a red and yellow flower pattern on a black background and the top was a separate black section altogether. At her feet lay two pairs of separate flat pumps. One white and one black pair.
She picked up the third dress and let the material flow through her fingers. It was so soft and light. She didn't own anything this beautiful back home. Everything worn in the temple was white and resembled uniform dress. Her eyes danced over the floral pattern, entranced by the curls and curves the spread of the pattern created.
Underneath the other dresses she discovered ...more pairs of underwear.
Her face turned beet red at the garments laying on the bedspread. They weren't as conservative as the first pair Mihawk got her - and at the time she hadn't considered it conservative at all. But now, three pairs of rather ...raunchy looking lingerie laid before her and surely Mihawk expected her to wear it out of good manners. It was so ...sexy, though?! Why? Why did he opt for these? Had he sent a crewmember to buy these instead of getting it personally? If so, Mia was instantly outraged. The whole crew probably knew she would be wearing this underneath her clothes then …
Underneath the lingerie she found a fourth pair, although after closer inspection found it was a blue bikini. Grateful, Mia decided it was rather useful article of clothing to have, especially for someone like her.
On her pillow were two nightdresses - very short, resembling the style of her lingerie with lace trimming. One was black with pink ribbons and the other was a sparkly silver liked shaved diamonds. The material was very light and cool and she would be lying if she said she wasn't excited to sleep in them.
On the other hand she was still quite outraged. Honestly, did women in this realm actually dress like this? Surely not all of them. Why on earth did Mihawk purchase these items for her? Couldn't he tell she was a woman of simple tastes? She didn't have a shred of promiscuity in her, nor did she show off her body in any way. Deciding she had no answers, she gave up and folded all her new clothing.
At the speed of light she threw off her dirty clothes. She neatly tucked her new clothes into the empty cabinet after pulling on the lesser scandalous pair of underwear. After much debate, she decided on the black nightdress and pulled it over her head in haste. The soft effect of it around her body was instantaneous.
The sun had already set. She glanced out her window to see stars in the sky. The collective sway of the ship as well as the feeling of being well fed and cleaned told Mia now was a good time to get to bed. She moved to switch off her lamp when a knock at the door halted her. She turned and curiously opened the door, completely forgetting what she was wearing.
Mihawk stood in the doorframe, his jacket gone and his shirt nearly buttoned down the whole way. Mia was about to greet him when his eyes shot to the dress she was wearing. It took her a second to realize she was dressed fairly scandalous in front of him. Horrified, she moved to shut the door when she decided against it. Too late now. He saw it.
Her face exploded in red when she took a glance down at herself and back at him to see his satisfied reaction. "Uh, I-I ...uhm."
Courteously, Mihawk averted his eyes to spare her any further embarrassment. "I see you got the clothes I sent for you."
"I, er, yes, thank you. It's all very ...I mean, it's beautiful. I, uhm, especially ...love the dresses," she clammered out of her mouth, heat rising up in her face. Nervously she drew with her toe on the floor, unaware that she was fidgeting.
"Was the food to your liking?" he asked gently, keeping his eyes locked with hers. For some reason, eye contact only seemed to make the situation worse.
"Oh, yes!" she squeaked, mentally cringing at how loud and high pitched she sounded. "It was amazing, thank you."
"And the bathroom is to your liking as well?" he continued, the corners of his mouth threatening to pull up.
"Ah, yes, yes! Thank you! It's lovely, I enjoyed a nice shower," she blurted without thinking and again, was mortified by her words. 'Sweet Neptune. Just kill me. Please.'
Mihawk, on the other hand, seemed to be enjoying this immensely, and he wasn't even trying to embarrass her. Instead, he was being more polite than necessary, which was very inappropriate in Mia's opinion since the last time they spoke he threatened to kill her.
"I haven't been able to contact Shanks, but I still have a relatively good idea where he is. If we run out of time somehow, I'm going to leave you with an acquaintance of him on an island in the area. You should be safe and well taken care of there," Mihawk explained. It was enough to distract her from her embarrassment and get her brain running again. She nodded thoughtfully at his words.
"I see. Thank you."
"By the way," he continued, never breaking eye contact. "There is a particular patch of sea that is always restless that we need to pass through in three days or so. I was wondering whether you would be able to smooth out the waters so we could cross it more smoothly."
Mia looked at him suspiciously. "Your ship looks like it could handle anything the sea throws at it. And I thought you were an experienced pirate. Surely you've handled such waters before?"
Mihawk nodded, eyes sharp. "Yes, but I figured since we had you on board you could perhaps offer some services in return."
Unconvinced, Mia crossed her arms. "You just want to see more of my abilities, don't you?" Mia said flatly.
Mihawk went on as if he hadn't been accused of anything. Unabashed, he lifted the tip of his head almost as if in slight apology. "You can't blame me for my fascination. Watching you control the seas that day you destroyed that Marine base was one of the most extraordinary feats I've ever seen. Though there are many devil fruit abilities in the world, and many belong to pirates, none had ever been found that could control the sea. That day I finally saw how valuable you actually are, and as I said before, I began to fear for the safety of the oceans that all pirates sail on."
Mia felt her face soften. Though his words held little compassion, they were genuine and honest. "Is that the only reason though?" she inquired gently, feeling the tension dissipate into an atmosphere of something lighter.
Mihawk's eyes clouded. He finally broke eye contact. His face remained as hard as steel, unweilding and not betraying a single emotion, yet his eyes told her everything.
"Roger would've wanted me to protect you. I know, he fought your sister. Afterwards he told us about the fight." He caught her perplexed expression, " Yes, I was part of his crew, "Mihawk added. "He was mildly shaken from the battle and it took a lot to throw him off back when he was in his prime. It took a few days for him to recover after that battle. Later on he wouldn't talk about it as much, but the times he did he expressed great fear for the powers your sister yielded that day they fought."
"Do you know why? Why they fought?" Mia asked, almost afraid for the answer.
Mihawk carefully looked at her. "I do not think you will like the answer."
Snorting, Mia decided she shouldn't be afraid. Come what may, Nera was her sister and now she had a dark past that Mia had to accept. "It's alright. Nera isn't very popular in the family anyway. Nobody would be surprised in the end, really."
Taking in her words, Mihawk nodded. "Roger claimed that your sister wanted to flood the entire world and drown every living thing until man was wiped out."
Mia's mouth fell open. Very unladylike of her looking back, but the answer blew her mind. Nera? Her sister wanted to do such a vile thing? Kill millions of innocent people and drown the world? It was almost too crazy to be true. Sure, Nera had an ...abrasive side, but she was in no way evil. Self-entitled, yes, but not up to a point where she was nearly crazy.
Although, now that Mia thought about it ...maybe she was when she was younger. It could've been at a time right after Mother's passing and the family split apart. It would make sense that Nera would be slightly out of logic and a little emotional after an incident like that. After all, Vera never recovered. 'No, don't think about that. It's not the same,' she thought, shaking her head to herself.
"I know it's not what you wanted to hear. It's just what Roger told us," Mihawk said somewhat sympathetically, catching the conflict in her azure eyes.
"No," Mia admitted a little sadly. "It's fine, though. I can see it happening in my head. When my mother passed away, the family mourned for years. There's a possibility that the grief may have warped her mind. Then again, my sisters are quite ...well, eccentric, I guess," Mia concluded sheepishly, flashing Mihawk a reassuring grin.
They stood in a few seconds' silence. Mia was too embarrassed to look him in the eyes again. His eyes were her downfall, she had figured out. It was best to not make too much eye contact in situations like this.
"May I offer you anything else? Like tea or coffee maybe?" he offered kindly, eyes trying to find hers.
Though the offer was inviting, Mia felt her eyelids had gotten heavier throughout the conversation. She feared she might say more mortifying things if she was even more tired.
"As lovely as that sounds, I'll have to pass. I think I should go to bed," she voiced softly, leaning against the doorframe and looking at him with half-lidded eyes.
Respectfully, Mihawk nodded. "Would you like to join me for breakfast tomorrow morning in my quarters?"
Not wanting to be rude, Mia couldn't even think of saying no for fear of coming off as ungrateful - the least she could do was have breakfast with the man. "Oh, sure. What time?"
"Come whenever you're finished. Just knock," he said and offered a small grin.
She raised an eyebrow. "And if I accidentally wake you up?"
"I don't sleep in the mornings," he added and then tipped his hat in greeting. "Good night, Mia."
She smiled. "Good night, Mihawk."
After he left, she closed the door, and flopped on her bed before she promptly passed out. The words that transpired between them replayed in her mind in an unending loop that lulled her to sleep.
