Pulling her hood over her head in a feeble attempt to keep warm, Bella found herself at a loss. The rain was getting worse and her shelter, a half-toppled gazebo in the forest, was not holding up in the Washington storm. Bella was terrified. Her mother had abandoned her, and her father was dead. What could thirteen-year-old Bella do? She reached down to grab her backpack when something caught her eye. Looking up Bella froze at the sight of an exceptionally large man and a tall woman standing a few feet away. The man was a muscular and tall brunette with golden eyes. Bella found him intimidating and felt herself shrink down before turning her attention to the woman. She was only a little shorter than her counterpart with flowing blonde hair and matching golden eyes. Though statue still, Bella locked eyes with the woman and tilted her head at the feeling enveloping her. She had not felt this safety and familial connection since her father died. Bella's fear dissipated as the woman slowly approached her and then knelt in front of her. Hesitantly, the woman opened her arms and Bella lunged into them. The woman wrapped her arms around Bella and gently shushed the cries that overtook her small body.
"Hello, little one. What are you doing out here all alone? Are you lost," the woman spoke gently while looking at her bond sister's tear-stained face. Bella shook her head, "I live here. My mother left me, and my dad died. Why are you out here? Who are you and who is that guy," Bella asked nervously as she looked back at the man behind them. The woman's heart breaks as she softly answers, "My name is Rosalie, and the big guy is Emmett. I know he looks scary, but he is just a big teddy bear. We went for a hike before the storm started." Rosalie motions for Emmett to come closer slowly as she feels her bond sister relax. Emmett and Rosalie share a soft chuckle at the sound of Bella's stomach growling audibly. "Sounds like you might be hungry. Would you like to come to my home with us? It's warm and dry there. We could get you something to eat," Emmett says softly before placing his coat over Bella's shoulders to warm the girl. Rosalie smiled at the way Emmett's coat swallowed Bella, "What should we call you, dear one?" Emmett smiled at the interaction, "Maybe we should call her, Squirt." Bella stuck her tongue out at Emmett and took Rosalie's extended hand, "My name is Isabella, but my dad called me Bella. I'm gonna call you, Bear, because you are so big." Emmett's eyes lit up at the girl warming up to him, "I am honored to be your Bear, Bella. Maybe I can call you, Little Bear." Bella nodded excitedly. Rosalie pouted at Bella and Emmett, "What about me, Little
Bear? Do I get a nickname too?" Bella looked down and blushed before whispering, "I was hoping I could call you, Sissy? Since you feel like a sister in my heart. Rosalie's eyes filled with unshed tears, "Of course, I can be your sister, Bella. I would love nothing more." Bella hugs Rosalie tightly, "C-can I stay with you and Bear, Sissy? I don't want to be alone anymore." Rosalie glanced at Emmett, who nodded in response to Rosalie's unspoken question. He felt an increasing desire to protect his mate's bond sister. He kneeled and gently placed a hand on Bella's shoulder, "What do you say we get out of this storm? Wouldn't want Little Bear to get sick from this cold, would we? How about a piggyback, Little Bear?" Bella nods and jumps onto Emmett's back, "You don't have to go slow, Bear. I know vampires are fast." Emmett's jaw dropped and Rosalie froze at the words of the young girl. "You know what we are?" Emmett asked softly. Bella nodded in response and Rosalie finally recovered, "You hugged us! Isabella, we could kill you! How do you know about vampires?!" Bella flinched at the loud voice, "Vampires killed my dad. My mom abandoned me to become a vampire. The one that killed my dad said he would never turn her if she kept her brat." Bella looked sad and Rosalie felt guilty. Suppressing the growl over Bella's scum of a mother, Rosalie responded, "Bella, look at me," Rosalie gently lifted Bella's chin to look at her, "We will NEVER abandon you." Emmett sat Bella down and turned to look at her in a rare moment of seriousness, "I promise that I will always be with you, Little Bear. Someday, we will have to turn you, but not for a long time." Bella wrapped her small arms around Emmett's neck, "Thank you, Bear. I want to stay with you and Sissy forever." Emmett smiled and turned to crouch for Bella, "Ready to go, girls? It's gonna be dark before long." Bella jumped up and held on tight as Emmett and Rosalie took off in the direction of the Cullen house. Rosalie made sure to text ahead to warn her family about Bella and silently cursed when she was reminded of the Denali family's impending afternoon arrival.
