Drift stares at a diary entry from ten years ago. The one he wrote after the chaos that happened. The day he, Crosshairs, and Hound finally met Jamie. Not realizing Crosshairs is sitting next to him. Close enough to read what's on his screen.
"Ah, so that's what you wrote that day," Crosshairs comments, startling Drift.
"Crosshairs!" Drift scolds and puts his phone in his pocket.
Crosshairs smirks at how embarrassed Drift is even though he didn't read all of what Drift wrote.
"You know humans have anniversaries? I think you should plan a date with Jamie."
"You were with me the day we met Jamie and her friends."
"And? Come on, you two have done little together. I know this doesn't bother either of you, but I think you two need to do things without me."
Crosshairs knows Jamie will not like being told he's not joining the two, but she will be happy being with Drift alone. Crosshairs leaves the room. Drift sighs and lies on the bed beside Jamie. Remembering the day they met. How pissed Crosshairs and Hound were seeing three humans. Bumblebee trying to defend the three humans. That shouldn't have been necessary, but the encounter was after the N.E.S.T. base was attacked, and every good and bad memory of Jamie since. Soon, his mind only thinks of the bad, including his fear he'll lose Jamie.
Crosshairs also thinks of how things turned out. Remembering the distrust he had towards Jamie and her friends. Now he considers her his sister. Falling for one of her friends.
Just wish I could figure out how to make you happy, Jamie. Crosshairs sighs. I want my family to be happy again.
Crosshairs knows a date won't change much, but he thinks it'll be good for Drift and Jamie.
He didn't think he'd find Drift sitting in the hallway.
I left for ten minutes, what happened? Crosshairs worries.
"Drift! Hey, what's wrong?" He asks as he sits on his knees in front of Drift, concerned why Drift would be upset.
As Drift tells him while sobbing, Crosshairs thinks he should have known the problem is drift was thinking of the day they met Jamie, which would easily turn to remembering the bad, including the current issue with Jamie's mental health. This hurts Crosshairs. He doesn't know what to say since he too is worried about Jamie.
Would getting him to think of the times they bring him joy help? Crosshairs wonders.
Crosshairs tries this, which helps both Drift and himself.
Once Drift is calm, Crosshairs gets him to figure out what he'll do with Jamie tonight as they wait for Jamie to wake up.
Drift plans throughout the day without Jamie knowing what he's up to.
Crosshairs didn't think Drift would plan on taking Jamie somewhere an hour from the base. He knows he shouldn't be worried, but he is. Perhaps partly because he's used to the three being together most of the time. Lately, they have been going back to Jamie's dimension with her. Jamie's mental health isn't helping.
Drift knows Crosshairs will worry, and likely other Autobots, but this is good for Jamie and he wants to take her out alone. Even if he has no intention of fragging her.
Jamie wants time with Drift but also wants Crosshairs to come with them. To her, he's not a third wheel even if the time out with Drift is considered a date. The two mechs still worry.
"When will we not worry about her?" Crosshairs smiles, "you'll be in an area that I can use a groundbridge to get to if I have to, but I think she'll be ok."
Drift knew it would be dark when they reached the cabin. He doesn't care it's February, and there's not much to do compared to the summer at this location.
He sees the deck goes out to the back of the cabin from the driveway. This gives him an idea. With Jamie distracted, listening to music, he moves her onto his lap.
"What are you doing?" Jamie asks as Drift takes off her headphones. Putting them, and her phone on the passenger seat with h the music still playing. He gets out of the car while holding Jamie. As he walks up the stairs, he sees a fire pit set up.
That's even better. Drift thinks as he heads to the spot. Seeing a double-swing chair looking out at the lake. Even though Jamie will be sitting on his lap.
Jamie leans on him as Drift sits on the swing, using his leg to move the swing slowly.
You worry me, Jamie. I don't know how to make you happy. Even staying here isn't helping you. Drift sighs, struggling not to think about Jamie's mental health.
He looks at the sky, the starlight relaxing him.
"Look, Jamie."
Jamie looks where Drift is pointing, liking how the night sky looks. She says nothing but thinks about how Sunstreaker and Lily would love to paint the sky she's seeing. She wants to take a picture of the sky, but also doesn't want to move. Until Drift sets her on the empty spot of the bench, that's more like a couch. She watches him prepare the fire pit and light a fire. Once he's sure the fire won't die the second he sits down, Drift sits back on the bench and moves Jamie back on his lap.
After an hour, the two decide it's time to go inside the cabin is beautiful. Drift got a cabin for two. The bedroom is upstairs with a view of the kitchen and the living room. The bathroom is off the kitchen. The two decide to get ready for bed and watch T.V.
Drift gets clothes for Jamie out of his subspace. With Jamie in the bathroom, Drift calls Crosshairs.
"You ok?" Crosshairs asks the second he answers his phone.
"I should be, but I can't stop thinking about how she's struggling."
Crosshairs sighs, "I was worried you wouldn't be able to stop worrying. Not like I'm not worried while you two are away from me."
"I know it's not good that we're this worried—."
"Who wouldn't be worried about their friend struggling like Jamie is? Or the one they love even as family? But I am worried about how you used to be calm, and now you struggle to think positively."
"And I worry about how you keep your feelings to yourself."
"Hey, I'm the one who's supposed to be helping you."
Drift knows Crosshairs is joking around and laughs. The two end the call. In time for Jamie to walk out of the bathroom.
"I thought you were getting changed upstairs?" She asks.
Drift doesn't know what to say. Jamie doesn't wait for an answer before going to the living room. Drift hurries upstairs.
He gets his bag from his subspace, and the box of cookies he got from Panera Bread. He got a new soft red blanket for the two of them even though they're going home tomorrow.
Jamie sits on the couch, but the T.V. is off. She likes the blanket Drift got. He puts the blanket over her after putting the box of cookies on the coffee table.
"I'm going to make tea."
Jamie is happy to be alone with Drift, but there's still a part of her that isn't liking Crosshairs isn't here. Even though this is what the three do just about every night minus the cookies. Jamie will not say anything to avoid ruining the night.
Drift can tell Jamie is now not liking Crosshairs isn't here. He knows Crosshairs won't come until Jamie is crying since he can be here in seconds using the groundbridge.
Is that wise, Crosshairs? Drift questions.
As the tea steeps, he warms up four chocolate chip cookies in the microwave.
He finds a tray to put the plate and two cups on to bring to the living room.
Drift puts the tray on the coffee table and sits on the couch. He puts on one of Jamie's favorite movies.
Just shy of three hours later, the movie is over, and the cookies are gone. The two watch T.V. until Jamie falls asleep.
"Good night," Drift whispers as he lays Jamie in bed.
He kisses her as he covers her with the blankets. Before he goes to sleep, he gets Jamie's phone, that's likely dead from his alt mode.
Once both their phones are charging, Drift lays in bed close to Jamie and falls asleep.
He considers this a good time with the humans he loves.
