Hey, happy Sunday!

Ok, so I don't know if I will be able to post anything si ring the week because I'm gonna have a busy couple of days.

That being said, I really hope you like this chapter.

It's one of my favorites.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts about it!

Happy reading!

Xoxo,

Nina

Kim looked at her phone again and was surprised to see that only 20 minutes had passed, because to her it had felt like two hours.

"This sucks."

She stood up and went to the bathroom. A bit of cold water splashed on her face and a quick walk was going to help her find her focus again, and that's exactly what she did.

She went back to her desk, walking every step in the path by heart because her sight was fixed on her phone screen, scrolling through her email trying to find a document she needed.

"There you are."

The voice startled her, making her jump and almost drop her phone to the ground. "Holy crap!"

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."

"What are you doing here?"

"What do you mean what am I doing here? I'm going through case files with you." Adam said like it was the most obvious answer ever.

"I thought…"

He didn't let her finish and interrupted her instead. "You thought I left." Kim nodded. "I did, but only because of that habits die hard comment you made." The brunette looked at him like he was making no sense at all. "I remembered how much you liked that Chinese place from two blocks away, so I decided to get us some dinner while we checked those files. After all we are doing this together tomorrow and I want to be prepared as well. Plus, everything in that box has to do with our investigation, so what better than me being here to make sense of it together?"

Kim smiled, evoking the same action from him.

"So this has nothing to do with you feeling sorry for my pathetic plans for the night?" She joked.

"Well the canceled date with Erin broke my heart a bit." He teased.

"Shut up."

They both laughed.

"What do you say? Wanna do this together?" Adam asked in all seriousness.

"Of course." She nodded with a sweet smile and that's when Adam felt like he was coming back to life again.

At the beginning they kept their conversations strictly professional. Both of them were too afraid of taking it to the personal field; and to be honest, neither one knew exactly what to say or how to act around each other, but as the hours went by that familiarity and easiness between them came back. It was as if it had magically appeared before their eyes.

"Oh my god. I had forgotten how good these egg rolls tasted." Kim commented, closing her eyes in an attempt to really enjoy each bite.

"I knew you would enjoy them." Adam replied proudly. "Or at least that they were going to make our night a bit better."

"Sorry for ruining your night. I'm sure you had much better plans than these."

"Believe it or not, I much rather be here."

Kim looked at him arching her brows, doing her best to hide a laugh but with not much success.

"Really? Going through paperwork on a Thursday night? I mean, don't get me wrong, you're being super helpful, but at least from what I remember this wasn't your favorite thing to do in your free time."

"Well, maybe not exactly the going through paperwork part." There it was, his impulsiveness again. But hey, it was part of who he was, and she knew that. "I am glad I'm of help." He continued speaking, hoping the first part of his statement would go by unnoticed.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Well, it didn't.

"I don't know. I guess I've been meaning to find some time to talk to you and that's what I'm enjoying right now."

"Yet we are not really talking."

Adam chuckled. "You're tough. I bet you slay it in the interrogation room." He joked, making her laugh.

"It wasn't my intention. I was just pointing out a fact." She shrugged her shoulders.

"What can I say? I guess you make me nervous Burgess."

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, sometimes being around you makes me nervous too."

"Really?"

"Yup." She took another bite of her eggroll and looked away. She had stepped too far into the vulnerable zone, and keep making eye contact with Adam was going to drag her right in there and she had no idea where that could leave her. "So, what do you want to talk about?"

"I wanted to apologize."

"What for?"

"Last night."

"What about last night? I thought we were having a pretty good conversation." She replied honestly.

"We were, that's not where I'm coming from." He looked down for a second and then back straight into her eyes. "I'm sorry for not telling you about Tori sooner."

"Oh, that."

There it was, the one topic she really wanted to avoid.

"Adam, you don't have to apologize for wanting to keep your private life private."

"I don't know. I feel like I should have told you sooner."

"Forget about it. It's not like we had a bunch of time to talk about our lives or that I asked and you lied about it. It just didn't come up."

"Yeah, I know. I just don't think you deserved to find out like that. That's all."

"Well, thank you. That is very kind of you to say."

"Maybe it's stupid to say this now. But after everything that happened between us." he sighed. "It's just… I don't want misunderstandings or lack of communication to get in the way of anything again. Does that make any sense?"

"Yeah. It does. And I don't want that either."

"Good." He said, smiling. "Nice to be on the same page."

"Yes." Kim imitated his action.

She was very confused right now. She loved being with him and at the same time was afraid of not being able to control herself any longer. Spending alone time with Adam only made all her feelings come back to life and right now she had no option but to silence them, for the sake of the case and the sake of his happiness.

"Um, it's kinda late. Wanna call it a night?"

"Only if you think we're prepared for tomorrow."

"We'll be fine." She smiled again. Even after everything that happened a part of her trusted Adam with her life.

"Ok then, let's call it a night." He began to gather his things and discretely watched her as she did the same thing. "Can I drive you to your place?" He asked with no hesitation, getting a confused look from Kim. "I'm not sure whether or not Voight was able to arrange a car for you, so..."

"He's on it, but I don't have it yet. I can get a cab or an uber. You don't need to drive me."

"I want to." His eyes pierced her one more time, but the intensity they were holding now was different and that was exactly when she understood that she was linked to him, that the connection she always felt was still there and he had to feel it too. How could he not feel something this intense and strong?

"Ok. Thank you."

Adam didn't answer, he just nodded smiling.

The drive to her place was less uncomfortable than what she thought it would be. Adam had tuned what used to be her go to radio station and she seemed to enjoy the music they were playing. They chit chatted and made silly jokes about the past, but nothing about their past.

After a few minutes they had finally reached their destination.

"Well, this is me." She said as Adam turned off the ignition.

"Whoa, this is one hell of a place you got hooked up with." Adam said, admiring the building and its surroundings.

"What can I say? My boss loves me." Kim replied playfully as she fluttered her eyelashes.

"I can see that."

"Thanks for driving me here."

"Any time." He unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to face her, getting a better glimpse at the expression on her face. "You know, I'm happy we did this today."

"Me too." Kim said before turning to look at him. "That thing you said today, about miscommunication. It keeps turning inside my head." Adam nodded, waiting to see what it was she wanted to say. "Yesterday, before our conversation was cut short, you asked me something and I didn't say anything."

"Yeah." He said softly. A part of him was afraid of hearing the answer.

"When I left, I was…" She shook her head. Maybe right now wasn't the correct time to get that deep into her feelings. So she decided to strictly answer his question. "Of course I missed you, Adam. How could I not?" Kim looked down, avoiding his eyes and let the rest of her sentence come out in almost a whisper. "I still do."

"Me too."

His body shifted slowly in an attempt to get closer to her. His hand softly cupped her cheek and the relief filled his body when he felt her lean into his touch, as if she was needing it just as much as he was.

"Incredibly so."

His thumb ran gently over her lips, those lips that he was desperately craving for.

Kim closed her eyes and sighed, feeling him get closer and closer to her and even though she knew this wasn't the best thing to do right now, she didn't want to stop it.

Her arms moved to hug his neck, and when they were less than inches away from each other, the buzzing of her phone startled her making her jump and triggering a shy chuckle from Adam.

"Sorry." Kim apologized a bit embarrassed, not sure about what.

"No problem." He didn't back away. Instead, he leant forward pressing his forehead against hers. "I guess someone is requiring you attention."

"It's probably Erin."

"As long as it is not Jay." He tried to joke about it, but Kim knew him better than that.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Ok, if you say so."

Now it was her hand on his cheek, gently scratching his beard.

"I'm gonna have to go inside."

"You don't have to. You can stay here for a little longer." His closed eyes allowed him to feel her skin on his face so clearly.

"I don't think that's a good idea, Adam."

Her words brought him back to reality, a reality he wasn't very fond of to be honest.

"Yeah, you're right."

She nodded as they slowly began to move apart. "Um, thank you for the ride and for dinner. I really enjoyed every part of it."

"I did too." He replied and they both smiled at each other because they knew exactly what they were talking about.

"Nite, Adam."

"Good night, Kim."

He moved fast and kissed her cheek making her blush, just before she opened the door of his truck.

"Let me walk you to the door."

"No." She said firmly.

"Why not?"

"Because, it's better this way."

"Fair enough." He didn't have to ask her what she meant by that because he knew. There was a lot they needed to talk about and sort out and now wasn't the ideal moment to do it.

"See you at the district tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow."

For the first time in a while, they both went to bed with a smile on their faces.

They had no idea what was going to happen next, but their little interaction managed to bring some peace and joy to their hearts.
