Sometimes Robbie honestly hated Halloween. It was a time of make believe, but when a part of your life is caught in a state of the unreal, living with a demonic like creature that may or may not be in your mind, Halloween struck too closely for comfort. Yes, Rex loved the costumes, and always was on the make for whatever he could get come the end of October. But Rob, he hated that day.
"Yo, Rob, what'cha planning on being for Halloween?" Andre asked.
"I was thinking of Batmen, but decided against it, cause I don't wanna confuse people." The boy answered, the smile on his face worthy of an academy award. Inside, he refused to dress up for the day, unless forced, because it always brought back the worst memories. "Think Jade'll be having another one of her holiday parties? Those were fun?"
"Jade invited us to speak with the dead last year." Dre said, his smile slipping. "Wasn't expecting her to literally try. I mean, we went to a grave yard, and tried a seance. What is wrong with that girl?"
"Hay, at least she stopped trying to make zombies." Rob offered. "But yea, her parties are weird, but fun. Not the kind of thing you'd expect. No costume contest, or bobbing for apples, or anything out of the norm. Okay, lots of horror movies, but this is Jade. She had a Christmas slasher marathon last year. For Christmas. Makes the nightmare before Christmas seem like a comedy."
"In some ways it was." Dre said, but his mood had soured. "Gonna go see what Cat's wearing. Last year, she had two backup costumes. Girl goes all out."
'Yea, cause while my never ending fantasy is a nightmare, it's her escape from a very waking horror show that only got better a short time before we entered the picture.' Rob thought, not wishing to hurt his friends image of Cat's family. 'I know the kinds of chiz her brother was into, and I understand why they had to lock him up, again. Cat was never physically hurt, even if she carried the trauma as if she was, but to her any escape was a god send, while to me, there really is no escape except the real world, and that turns out not to be that great. At least Jade and Beck are broken up. That reduced the odds of her heading off to some costume party and ruining my escape for the year…'
"… Telling you we should wear matching costumes." Tori's voice came around the corner. "And nothing that would give my sister nightmares. And get this, Trina likes some of the messed up chiz you watch, so I know, not that easy to scare her, but you did it, with just two costumes."
"Yea, good times." Jade chuckled. "Okay, how about…"
"The bride is fine, as long as you wash the dress." Tori cut her off. "No Tawney Walker-Black this year."
"Wasn't gonna suggest that." Jade muttered, but the look said that was exactly her plan.
"When did this happen?" Rob asked, watching as his safe heaven was being stripped away by what looked to be an unexpected romance. 'Really, should have seen this coming. Honestly, should have prayed for it. If I'm not dating either of them, then I want them happy, and this looks to be a good idea.' Despite his almost literal inner demon, Rob was in many ways a decent enough guy.
"Kinda over the last two weeks." Tori volunteered. "You remember that event we went too, just you, me, Jade and Dre? Well, as a part of trying to get her signed, we had to hang out, a lot, and unlike the past, we didn't have our normal animosity between us. Oh, yea, how'd that work out for you?"
"Got an offer to join a band." Rob said, somehow not sure how he'd forgotten it. 'Thought it was as a session player, but based on t hat email I got this morning, it's starting to look like the need a really good guitarists… Guessing I do have plans for Halloween.' His smile returned. "Which brings up… Jade, won't be able to attend your party this year. I think I'm going to some kind of event with the band."
"They invited you?" Jade asked.
"They will." He replied. 'Cause I know they want an in with you, cause of your voice, and having me in the band, only gonna help. Plus, I may be the single best guitar player they can get…'
His mind once again freed, and away from Rex's screaming about how much of a loser he was, Rob felt okay watching as the new couple tried to work out how they'd be spending Halloween. 'Just as long as the only costumes I wear are for the gig. Not so into pretending any more, at least not if there isn't a paycheck in it for me.' Yes, Robbie hated Halloween, except when he could escape into a decent reality, away from the dramas of his make believe.
