Building the Foundation 2: Melissa, What Happened?
During the night, Mao, an anthropomorphic cat clad in red samurai armour, stood in the shadow of the ziggurat. A vision flashed in his mind of a rift in space, an aperture which led into the vast crimson void of the Expanse. The rift itself was contained in a clear Plexiglas sphere held by a giant metallic ring. The ring was connected to a dais full of circuitry via a metal stalk. In turn, the dais had several wires connecting it to various forms of electronic equipment such as diagnostic computers and a generator.
Early next day, as everyone finished breakfast, Mao reported what he had seen to the Spade Mercenaries. "Where did you see this?" asked Abel, his curiosity piqued as Mao described the vision.
"Out east in the Pacific Ocean," replied Mao.
"The ocean? Like on an island?" asked Yuzu, puzzled by this response.
"Send our demons to scout there," said Abel.
The Spade Mercs exited their Domain at a secondary entrance, which brought them into the remote, forested wilderness somewhere in Japan. They summoned all of their airborne demons and sent them east towards the Pacific Ocean. At first, they found only vacant water. The demons spread out further until the golden, ostrich-like rooster Vidofnir spotted a large metallic island. The demons converged on this strange land and performed stealthy overflights to determine the lay of the land.
The island had a circular shape, divided into four smaller cities for human habitation. These modern cities stood at the points of a downward-pointing triangle with the fourth city forming the centre. The tallest structure was a 200-storey tower at the very heart of this central city. In addition to human police officers, there were robots which resembled inverted flower pots with sensors patrolling the streets. The only way onto the island was via an airport on its south side.
The demons continued to scout the island as the Spade Mercenaries discussed it back at the Domain. As Atsuro heard the reports, his face lit up upon realizing where they were describing. "Ah! That's I-Island! That's where the world's greatest scientists gather to conduct research, especially into Quirks. No wonder the security there is so tight," said Atsuro.
"What's going on there? Are the scientists experimenting with the Expanse?" asked Midori.
"Whatever it is, we'll find out. Having rifts opened here makes it easy for demons to get in. Let's gather information and understand what's really happening," said Abel.
"Don't forget to let Izuku know. We'll be a bit busy for a while," said Yuzu.
During Izuku's next appointed training session, Atsuro stopped him at the locker room and told him about the mission at I-Island and how the Spade Mercs would be preoccupied with monitoring it. "Okay, I understand. Girimekhala can take care of my training, no problem," said Izuku nonchalantly.
"Hey, thanks for being so understanding! We'll get the I-Island issue resolved as soon as we can," assured Atsuro.
After a good training session, Izuku left the Domain for the day. The Spade Mercs left their Domain at the secondary exit and boarded Yog-Sothoth, a demon resembling a mass of glowing white orbs. After a quick flight, they landed in a tree-covered park under the cover of concealing magic. Abel returned him to dimensional storage and looked around. The Spade Mercs were in the northern part of I-Island, in the forested, park-like area on the outer ring encircling the four cities.
Abel focused and expanded his awareness with ESP. He could detect distortions in reality, like ripples radiating through water. "Can you feel that?" asked Abel. "Demons have been here!"
Midori focused and felt those same ripples radiating from various places across the island. "Yeah. Looks like we've got some some cleanup," remarked Midori.
The Spade Mercs made their way through the forest and came upon a path to the southwest, which led to a parking lot and the rest of the Northeast City on the island. During the day, Northeast City had the hustle and bustle of people commuting and living out their daily lives. As Hero Society's scientists delved into the secrets of Quirks, those who did not research at the labs ran businesses which supported them. They included restaurants and stores for clothing and electronics among others.
Midori looked all around Northeast City in awe and took in everything, from the smallest store ahead to the top of the highest skyscraper. "To think this whole island is man-made!" remarked Midori. "We don't have anything like this back home!"
"These people are more technologically advanced than we are," remarked Atsuro as he too gawked at the buildings.
"We should set up a base of operations here before we proceed," said Abel.
Eventually, the Spade Mercs rented an apartment in the Northeast City using money accrued from demons collecting randomly dropped change around Japan. While in the apartment living room, Abel warped the dimensions, linking the apartment to their Domain in Mustafar Park. They started their mission by searching the streets of the Northeast City. They looked around for anything which seemed amiss, but nothing appeared out of the ordinary so far.
As the sun began to descend below the horizon, it cast a bright red glow over the land. A bespectacled blonde with shoulder-length hair worked late at her lab at high school, putting the finishing touches on her school project. This girl was Melissa Shield, daughter of Dr. David Shield, a premier scientist who specialized in Quirk-related projects for various corporations and governments. Melissa was following her father's footsteps, learning the sciences in order to build gear which would help with Quirks.
Melissa put down her current project, a red wristband with a button on its back. This invention could expand to cover the hand as a protective glove. It reduced the feedback from blows delivered with superhuman strength, preventing users from injuring themselves. She looked at the time and saw it was 6:09pm. She really needed to return home, as it was late. She stashed her project in a small bin, then loaded it into a large wall-mounted cavity.
"I'm going home!" she called to the lab monitor in the room nearby.
"Okay!" he replied.
Melissa left the lab and made her way down the streets of the South City to get home. Already, the sun had set and the sky darkened. The people came out to enjoy the night life. The security drones had also increased in number as the bulk of the human patrol officers had left for the night. Melissa took a shortcut through the alley between a pharmacy and the neighbouring house and called her father on a smartphone. "Hi dad! I'm heading home now. Will you be working late again tonight?" asked Melissa over the phone.
"Yes dear. My project is giving me fits," replied David, who then let out a sigh. "I forgot to prepare dinner again. Please get something for the both of us on the way home."
Before she could answer her father, she had passed an intersection in the alley. She heard what sounded like sploshing approach her location from the right. "Hello? Is someone there?" Melissa asked towards the sound.
Whoever it was responded by rounding the corner. That person, or rather thing, was a mass of wriggling worms which moved as one coordinated unit. It stood upright like a human, but had no discernible legs, nor anything resembling a face. It had two appendages roughly equivalent to arms. "Mmm... Tasty..." it groaned as it fixated on Melissa.
Melissa's eyes widened upon seeing this bizarre creature. "AAAAH!" she screamed as she bolted as far away as she could.
"Melissa, what happened? I heard you scream! Please answer!" cried David into the phone.
Too terrified to respond, Melissa could only run. After rounding two corners, she found herself at the rear of an apartment. She found a discarded cardboard box by some garbage and quickly hid inside it to avoid being seen by that creature. It had a small opening for a handle which gave her a view of the outside. The worm monster eventually rounded the previous corner in search of Melissa. Slowly did it move across her field of view, unable to see where she was.
"Melissa? Please respond!" demanded David from Melissa's smartphone.
The worm monster immediately turned towards the cardboard box. "Oh crap! He's gonna find me!" thought Melissa as the worm monster approached the box. Instead of waiting for it to make the next move, Melissa hurled the box at the creature, then bolted for the nearest exit. "AAAAH!" she screamed, dropping her phone as she ran.
The monster gave chase, moving with surprising speed for a creature made entirely of worms. "Melissa, what happened? Melissa! MELISSA!" cried David into the phone. The worm monster stepped over the phone, crushing it beneath its weight and abruptly terminating the call.
Melissa rounded a corner and saw a concrete separation wall blocking her way. Her flanks were blocked by buildings and the only way out was to go back the way she came. She heard sploshing from behind and saw the worm monster round the corner. There was nowhere to run and the worm monster was closing in rapidly. When it lunged at her, its worms got all over her, wriggling across her skin and biting into it, drawing blood. "AAAAAH! HELP ME! HELP!" she screamed as she tried to cover herself.
At that moment, a mysterious magical girl in pink landed behind the worm monster. "Magical Dolly has arrived to deliver magical punishment to you!" announced the bespectacled girl.
She ignited the worm monster in flame, forcing it to release Melissa. The young scientist quickly brushed off the remaining worms. Noting that the monster was distracted, Melissa glanced from place to place, then finally noticed a downspout. She scurried up as fast as she could, then over the wall to the other side, where she bolted away without looking back.

Melissa had reached her home, out of breath from running for her life. "Melissa? What's going on? You're bleeding!" asked David from his car window as he approached his home.
"Something attacked me!" replied Melissa, still panting from her brush with death. "It was a big bunch of worms. A pro hero came to fight it, but I didn't stick around to watch."
After David parked his car, he helped dress Melissa's cuts with bandages and antiseptic solution. "I'm glad you got home alive. Please be careful next time," said David, before hugging his girl.
As the next day went on, Melissa attended classes as normal, but a lingering hunger continued to pester her throughout the day. Despite a good breakfast of bacon and eggs, then four slices of pizza at lunch, those meals could not sate her hunger. She endured and tried to put her mind off the hunger, but that only made it worse. While sitting in class, she saw images of a fuel gauge flash in her vision, indicating low fuel. Not only that, the other students and teacher seemed like great sources of fuel.
Despite these thoughts, she made it through the day without incident. Back home, Melissa took a look at herself in mirror. A strange grey spot had formed over left eye, expanding rapidly until it melted into a metallic goo. Her right arm followed. When she tried to leave her room to get help, her legs melted and she stumbled, then her body melted further into liquid metal. "Ah! What's happening to me?" she asked herself mentally, unable to scream as her mouth melted.
The molten metal coalesced into an ovular, mechanical torso. A pair of mechanical chicken legs formed where her legs would be. When the process finished, she had become a biped, robotic war machine. Her HUD displayed her fuel gauge, which was close to empty. She needed to refuel herself immediately. Her sensors detected a possible source of fuel on the floor below, so she smashed her way through her room door.
Seated downstairs on a couch watching TV, David perked up upon hearing the loud sound. "Melissa?" he asked to the stairs. He got no response. Instead, the machine hovered her way down the stairs. "What the..." he blurted, getting up only to find his legs pinned in place by a hardening blob of metal.
David found himself immobilized and unable to escape. The machine approached and extended liquid metal, which hardened into a solid snake of metal, a cable with a maw at the end of it. "SSS!" it hissed at David's face.
The scientist's eyes widened in fear as the eyeless snake bared its fangs at him, then lunged at his shoulder near his neck and bit in. "GAAAH!" screamed David as blood poured from the wound.
In a flicker of blue light, Abel and Midori suddenly appeared in the den of the Shield family residence, behind the transformed Melissa. Abel had quickly tied her up in vines formed from his hand. With a sharp tug, he had yanked her off of her father and tossed her aside, where he froze her to the ground in ice. Abel came over and pressed a Magatsuhi muffin into the snake's maw, which she promptly ate. With her hunger sated, Melissa regained her human form and sanity.
In the meantime, Midori had rushed over to David's side and bathed his bleeding wound in soothing white light. Melissa was puzzled to find herself lying on the ground, underneath ice. After wriggling out, she sat up, then noticed David. "Oh no!" she gasped, eyes widened and covering her mouth reflexively.
"Who are you?" asked David. The pain in his neck flared as he tried to move. "ARRRGH!" he gasped.
"Please don't move! You're still hurt!" pleaded Midori as she continued to heal him.
"I'm the Immortal Stranger and my partner is Magical Dolly. We're part of a group which is tracking down infectees like yourself and your daughter," replied Abel. "Who might you be?"
"I'm Melissa Shield and that's my dad, David," replied Melissa.
"You said 'infectees?' Did I catch a bug from her after she bit me? What was that thing she turned into?" asked David.
"Your girl has been infected with Atma, and now, you are too. Your daughter became a demon after her hunger for Magatsuhi got the better of her. You'll share the same fate if you don't eat properly and change into a demon like she did," replied Abel.
David's jaw dropped. "Oh my God! Is there any way cure it?" he asked.
Abel shook his head. "There is no cure," replied Abel.
David's heart sank at the thought. "You'll going to hurt a lot of people if you don't get help," warned Midori.
"It's like I caught a werewolf virus," remarked David.
"One of the people we rescued actually is a werewolf," replied Midori.
"People like you need Magatsuhi and proper training to manage your condition without putting others, or yourself, at risk. Luckily, you can turn to us for that," said Abel.
"You said demon, as in an evil monster? Was that what happened to me?" asked Melissa. "I felt really hungry, then I remember melting into metal and blacking out. Now I'm here, my dad's bleeding, and you're here."
"The demon took over your mind and you attacked your own father," replied Midori. Melissa gasped as she covered her mouth in horror. "You're lucky we found you in time! If we came any later, you would have eaten him!"
Melissa gasped again. "What happens now?" asked David.
"As I said, you'll need Magatsuhi and training to manage your condition," replied Abel. "We'd also like to recruit you to help with this Atma situation. Atma isn't the only danger. There are other demons lurking in the shadows. If you are fine with it, we can have you exterminate them, including infectees who're too far gone. If not, there are other ways to help."
"Can't pro heroes handle the demons?" asked David. "Why ask us to get involved?"
"Demons can't be affected without some form of supernatural power. Magic can counter that, such as the powers you have gained from Atma," replied Abel. "If you do take up our offer, know that you must act in secret. The demons feed on a climate of fear, which we must avoid. You'll also be acting as a vigilante, if our understanding of your world's laws is correct."
"What about that worm monster who attacked me? Was it that creature who infected me? What happened to it?" asked Melissa.
"You must mean Worms," replied Midori. "Yeah, you were infected by him. We're giving him help too, so he'll be fine."
Thanks to Midori's assistance, David's wound had vanished completely. Melissa stood tall before the Immortal Stranger and Magical Dolly. "I'll help. Please train me!" said Melissa.
"Are you sure about that, Melissa?" asked David.
"I've always wanted to be a hero since I was little, but without a Quirk, I couldn't hope to do that. Now, I have power. I can make a difference!" replied Melissa, clenching her fist.
Abel bowed. "Thank you very much. We'll train you to the best of our abilities. What about you, David?" asked Abel.
"I can't right now. I'm busy with a project for a big client at the moment. Once I've completed it, I can offer more help," replied David.
"Fair enough. For now, rest and recover. Come by tomorrow and we'll continue this conversation then," said Abel. He handed the Shield family an address on a slip of paper, which Melissa recorded on her smartphone. "This is where you can reach us."
"Okay, we'll pay you a visit when we're free," said Melissa.
))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
After school the following day, Melissa and David had arrived at the apartment building. She knocked on the door to room 108. "It's Melissa and David! Please let us in!" said Melissa.
The door opened to reveal Yuzu on the other side. "Hi! I was expecting you. Please come in!" said Yuzu with a smile.
"Hi! I'm Melissa Shield and this is my dad, David. What's your name?" asked Melissa as she entered.
"I'm Yuzu Tanikawa, but you can call me Pink Sleeves while working on our special project. I'll take you to meet my friend," said Yuzu. "Things might get a little strange, so don't be afraid."
Upon closing the door behind the Shield family, the entire room turned red as though another world bled into their current one. Melissa could see several Legion demons flying by overhead on patrol in the sky. These cancer-like creatures had multiple faces on them, most of which were anguished. Another of the demons above was Vidofnir. The golden, radiant bird looked out of place in this unholy environment. The Shield family could do nothing but gawk at each of the strange sights in the area.
A few metres ahead, they came upon Mao the samurai cat, a Neko Shogun demon. "Aw! What a cute lil kitty!" remarked Melissa.
"Hi Mao! Is Saemon at the colosseum?" asked Yuzu.
"Meow! My lord is waiting fur his guests to arrive," replied Mao.
"Good! I'm taking them there now," said Yuzu.
She led the Shield family north and west, where they found themselves at the southeast area of a large structure resembling the Roman Colosseum. When they reached the bleachers, they found Abel in the centre, checking some practice dummies and iron bars he had set up for training. "Hi everyone! Glad you could come!" called Abel once he noticed them. They made their way down to the arena and met him there. "You already know me as the Immortal Stranger, but while here, you can call me Abel. This is where we'll train," he said, extending his hand to present the arena to them.
Melissa looked around in awe and noted how true this colosseum looked to the real one in Rome. "Wow! We're gonna train in the Roman Colosseum?" asked Melissa.
"Yep, but first, we should discuss your powers," replied Abel.
"I'll leave you guys here. Good luck!" said Yuzu, waving as she left the area.
"Bye!" said Melissa, waving back to her.
"Okay. To start, let me speak of your Atma powers. Melissa, your Atma is known as 'Metal Gear.' It allows you to manipulate metal by thought. It can also stockpile metal, even transmute one metal into another," said Abel.
"What about mine?" asked David.
"Yours is called 'Gear of War.' It enables you to create military equipment such as guns and ammunition. Other things you can make include combat rations, tents, even vehicles," replied Abel.
David pondered all of the applications and things he could make with Gear of War. "Both of these abilities sound quite powerful and versatile," remarked David.
"Oh yes! Both of you can still use these abilities as a human, but to a lesser degree than in demon form. You could create, say, rations or a handgun as a human, but creating a whole vehicle like a jeep or truck would be out of the question," replied Abel.
"That's better than nothing," remarked David.
"I'll warn you now that this is a point of no return. Once you transform to train, you'll lose any Quirks you have," warned Abel.
"Wait, what?" asked David in shock.
"You'll lose your Quirks once you transform. It is inevitable, whether from growing hungry, exposure to the full moon, or simply to use it," replied Abel.
"It's not a problem for me since I'm Quirkless, but dad will lose his Quirk once he changes," warned Melissa.
"My Quirk isn't much anyway. Gear of War is much more powerful," said David.
"Okay, let's get some training in. To use your powers, all you have to do is think about it and it will happen. Melissa, you can start by taking those iron bars as ammunition."
"Time to test this baby out!" said Melissa.
She transformed into Metal Gear and focused on one of the iron bars. It started to melt into a grey goo and flowed into her. She then released the accumulated metal, which coalesced into the form of a harpoon, then hurled it at a dummy with just her thoughts. The iron spike had impaled deeply enough to damage the heart had the dummy been a real person.
"This unit's power is superb. This unit can construct support items easily," remarked Metal Gear with a robotic monotony.
"Try making bullets and ball bearings. Keep practising by making and shooting different kinds of metallic projectiles for now. I'm going to give David his lesson," said Abel.
"Affirmative," replied Metal Gear.
David perked up when Abel went to address him. "Okay, what should I do?" asked David.
"Change into Gear of War, then focus hard and will a gun into existence. Try making an assault rifle," replied Abel.
David began his transformation into Gear of War. Metallic teeth burst out of his torso along with the rest of a giant metallic gear which had silver eyes. Gear of War released liquid material which hardened into an assault rifle, one similar to those used by the US military of Hero Society. It was a newer derivative of models such as the M16 and M4, but had reduced recoil and improved accuracy over them.
Gear of War fired the rifle and riddled his target dummy with dozens of bullets in a matter of seconds. "Well? How do you like your new abilities?" asked Abel.
"It's a great, sir!" replied Gear of War.
"Keep practising. Let your imagination run wild and create new items," said Abel.
For his next lesson, Gear of War had created an assault rifle with a chainsaw blade on its underside. Once new target dummies appeared, he promptly gunned them down save for one. For that last straggler, he closed and revved the chainsaw attachment. He pushed the blade through the dummy and caused it to split into halves along a diagonal. Both pieces hit the ground and vanished in an instant.
Both members of the Shield family continued practising and familiarizing themselves with their capabilities and limits in both Avatar and human form. After a few hours, Abel stopped them. "That's enough for today. When you go back, remember to be discreet about revealing anything you've seen or heard here. Demons feed on fear, so be careful," said Abel.
"We will. Thanks for all that you've done, Abel," said Melissa, after returning to human form.
"You're welcome. Make sure to take some Magatsuhi muffins before you leave," said Abel, pressing Tupperware boxes filled with Magatsuhi into the hands of the Shield family.

The next time Melissa came into the colosseum for training, Izuku's session was coming to a close for the night. After Altered Beast Werewolf hurled Lunar Balls to destroy the nearest dummies, he came in with a Lunar Kick and bowled over the ones in the rear. "Hey!" Melissa cried to Abel.
"Oh! Nice to see you, Melissa! Say hello to Izuku Midoriya, also known as Altered Beast, our other main trainee. Izuku, meet Melissa Shield, who'll be training with us. She just joined our group a short time ago," introduced Abel.
"Hi! Nice to meet you!" said Izuku, waving after changing back to his human form. When he heard Melissa's full name, he gained a sense of familiarity. "Your last name is Shield? That sounds very familiar…"
"You must be thinking of David Shield, the famous scientist who makes Quirk support gear. He's my dad!" stated Melissa, the pride beaming from her voice.
Izuku's jaw dropped. "No way! David Shield is your father? The same David Shield who was All Might's sidekick in the US? The same David Shield who made all of All Might's iconic looks such as the Bronze Age, Silver Age, and the Golden Age? Wow!"
Melissa smiled. "Yep! That's my dad! I never knew you were such a fan of Uncle Might," said Melissa.
"Uncle Might?" Izuku asked, taken aback at how familiarly Melissa spoke about the top pro hero of Japan and Symbol of Peace.
"Of course! Uncle Might was always there when I was little," replied Melissa. "He's practically family!"
Izuku's jaw dropped again. "Wow! I'm All Might's number one fan! It's really great to meet you, Melissa!" said Izuku.
"Ahem! Melissa, if you want to train with Izuku, we can reschedule his time a bit later," said Abel.
"Sure! I'll come a bit later next time. That should sync up our training sessions," said Izuku.
"Okay, that's good. I look forward to training you together," said Abel.
Tomorrow night, as the two students trained, Scarlet flew over I-Island. While hidden in a subdimension, Scarlet would not be detected as she searched for the cause of the aperture. It was a beautiful night full of stars with the crescent moon shining brightly over the land. The night was young and the people came out to relax and enjoy the nightly entertainment. Scarlet herself wanted nothing more than to be back home in the embrace of Abel and Yuzu.
As she flew over Central City, she soared past the central tower of the island. That was when she detected Magatsuhi flowing out of the Expanse, and the vast array of emotions contained within it. The aperture was nearby and her ESP put it below her, beneath the central tower of the island. "Abel darling, I've found the aperture!" announced Scarlet telepathically to her lover. "It's below the central tower."
"Ah, I see. So that's where it was this whole time," said Abel.
In the meantime, Melissa had been using metal to create sculptures. It was a simple exercise to improve precision and fine control over her abilities, as duplicating the finest details of a person's likeness required much skill. While making one of her father, she noticed Abel speaking to someone who was not present. "Is something the matter?" asked Melissa as she looked up from her sculpting, noting the great focus within Abel's face.
"Something's come up that I need to take care of. Keep making statues and hone your fine control," said Abel.
"Okay," replied Melissa.
When Abel reported this finding to the other Spade Mercenaries at the ziggurat's lounge, they discussed the meaning of it. "If that's true, that would suggest someone is opening it as part of an experiment. There are research labs under the tower," said Atsuro.
"Just what kind of experiments could they be doing?" asked Yuzu, wondering about it.
"Whatever it is, we'll have to make them stop!" said Midori, clenching a fist.
"We'll put more demons on monitoring duty around the tower," said Abel. "We'll have Night demons and others with stealth abilities check indoors."
The next day, a Wild Hunt positioned itself on the roof of an apartment building overlooking the central tower. They watched the tower and took note of whoever entered and exited as the hours went by. At the same time, Atsuro had hacked into the tower's camera network through magic and got the feed beamed to his laptop screen. Since there were dozens of cameras, he restricted the number shown to four, one feed in each quadrant of the screen.
At the lobby and entrance, he only saw random people passing through. On the upper floors, he saw an area with circular towers resembling parking structures which had planters on their edges. This greenhouse-like area appeared to be a site which tested the effects of Quirks on various types of plants. Most of the other cameras displayed random places of little interest. It was not until a camera displayed one of the underground labs that Atsuro found anything of interest.
Atsuro saw a group of scientists working around an object which consisted of a metal stalk with a clear spherical, plastic shell mounted on top. It looked very much like a lollipop and was mounted on a metal dais which had numerous wires running into it. The scientists started the machine. "Lord Atsuro, I can detect the aperture again!" reported Mao through telepathy.
"Thanks for telling me. I think we've found our culprit," replied Atsuro, as he watched that very dimensional aperture form within the plastic orb.
The camera had no audio, so the words of the scientists could only be inferred from the movements of their lips. "How much power did we make this time?" asked one of the leading scientists on this project. He was a man with a goatee, mussed brown hair, and glasses.
"99%," replied his underling, a blond man with balding hair and an oblong head.
"Damn! Still break-even," replied the leading scientist.
The scientists continued work as Atsuro watched their lab via camera. Eventually, the scientists wound down their experiments for the day. As they left, an invisible Wild Hunt slipped into the room unnoticed. Since nothing was going to happen in the empty lab during the night, Atsuro set to work identifying the scientists by comparing records of personnel with the footage recorded from their lab. Two men stood out in particular. The first was the chief scientist, Dr. David Shield. The other was his balding underling, Dr. Samuel Abraham.
Having identified the researchers, Atsuro targeted their computers for magically assisted hacking. He got in with only a minor amount of effort and filtered through the files in their computers. According to them, Dr. Shield's team was researching a new method of generating energy called the Perpetual Reactor project. This generator worked by opening a fissure into another dimension, then capturing the energy that leaked out as a result. So far, the group was stuck at break-even, unable to push past that threshold to make clear gains.
Atsuro reported this information to the others. Abel stroked his chin as he pondered this amazing coincidence. "I think Melissa ought to know what her father has been up to," replied Abel. "When she next comes to train, I'll talk to her about that."
