I feel like my day's not going to get any better. Spider-Man thought seeing a rochet heading towards him. I can't believe this is my second rocket attack on the same day too. Just an excellent day all around!
Avoiding a rocket was not an easy task. Ones from Bettle were tiny and wouldn't do much damage that would have to be a concern. However, these were not tiny; they were not huge missiles used by suspicious governments or terrorists with far too much money, somewhere in the middle. They'd cause a blast that would kill civilians or damage a building heavily!
Peter shoot web lines pulling them together, causing a blast a bit above the deserted street. The downside was he came crashing down to earth, landing his body into the concrete and causing slight discomfort.
Pain, we need to stop meeting like this. Think we could use a break. Tingling went off as the wild rhino man in an armoured suit charged at Spidey.
"Toro toro!" Peter cried, leaping into the area, moving out of the way.
"Might I ask why you're dressed like a rhino, Mr?"
"Call me, The Rhino." He replied with a speakerphone inside the suit, shockingly calm for someone who happened to be destroying a city block.
"Alrighty, Mr. The Rhino. How about we call this rampage quits? Surely you'd have something else to be doing with your day besides level Manhatten. Right?" Peter asked in a near bagging tone.
"Unfortunately, I intent on killing a man today. You'll be included as a bundle option if you don't back away making this all much more complicated then required." Rhino still responded calmly.
"We're going to have ourselves an issue then," Peter replied, getting into an action pose.
Rhino sighted. "So be it. I happen to have loads of pent-up rage bottled up thought all my years that'd I'd be happy to express in an unhealthy manner." He replied and realized Spider-Man disappeared as he spoke.
"What! Where are you!" His voice changed to aggression.
Peter broke a fire hydrant open, spraying water at the suit with no result.
"You can't be serious!" Rhino said, laughing.
"Worth a shot," Peter replied, shrugging his shoulders.
Rhino went off after someone Spider-Man did not see. "You can't do anything to me! Shall not even waste my time with you!"
"Hey, that hurts my feelings!" Peter replied in hot pursuit. "Could you at least tell me why you're doing all this? Must be someone unlikeable!"
Rhino clipped though a few buildings charging through an alleyway. Spider-Man webbed his back and pulled with all his might to bring a stop to the charge. This failed, it brought him along for the ride, which hurt due to not having something to skite off. Spidey kept tugging in hopes of stopping this, and it did annoy Rhino, which made him turn around to brush him off. Peter evaded a couple of swings as the mechanical Rhino was slow at doing anything besides charging in a straight line.
"What's the matter? Can't hit me?"
"I'll crush you, foolish young man! I intend to end the life of a ruthless criminal stop fighting me!"
Spider-Man ignored this and tried punching where the operator's face should be. The suit was made of heavy armour for sure.
"Say is your suit made of Chobham armour? Where on earth did you get access to that?"
"Above your pay grade, I fear, it's a shame your a smart young man wasting your life away," Rhino stated.
"Aren't you doing the exact same? Peter replied, pointing at him.
Rhino did not respond and stood still.
"Um, hello?" Spider-Man asked confused
This could be my chance. He's got to be distracted by something or someone.
Quickly webbing open Rhino was easy enough.
"Welp, that should do the trick!"
An odd sound could be heard zooming overhead.
"Oh, great Bettle guy again," Peter said, defeated with a hint of energy left pushing forward-moving to investigate as Rhino began to once more bursting free. "Whoops, better get a move on."
The Bettle landed nearby Silvermane and his daughter. Their guards fired with no avail, bullets bouncing off the armour, and they received rounds back via Bettle near-instantly.
"Please, get it over with," Silvermane said, shielding his daughter.
"Into the building," Bettle said, saying his first words smashing a nearby door into a residential building.
Spider-Man projected himself at Bettle, knocking him to the ground.
"Run!" Peter shouted, punching Bettle, not noticing or caring who was being saved.
"Your annoying," Bettle replied, cracking Spidey in the face with his robotic fist repeatedly, grasping the fist when the four swing came along. With this, he returned blows knocking his foe back, but not down.
"I can do this all-" Peter tried saying before Rhino came charging at him once more. Bettle flew out of the way, and Spider-Man moved to keep him away from anything that could be damaged too heavily.
Silvermane and Alisa ran away from the craziness unfolding behind them.
"Quick, Father! Here, it's unlocked!" Alisa said, pulling the older man of a residential building for safety.
"Fisk send those dammed madmen to kill us! When we get out of this, he's going into the grave! Along with any who follow him!" Silvermane declared loudly.
"Calm yourself!" Alisa said with an aggressive whisper.
Silvermane looked upset and replied, "Apologies. The nerve gets to me!"
Alisa hugged him. "I know this must be difficult. Top of the food chain a few hours ago. Now we're being hunted like rats by a Bettle and Rhinoceros of all things."
"Your calmer then I'd expect," Silvermane said with surprise."
"Come. We must keep moving. They're a persistent bunch for sure. Fortunately, I've received the address for a safe house. It's not much further we must get there on foot. I'll get our people to move out there."
"Good, thank you. Might have to carry me part of the way." Silvermane laughed weekly tried from the chase.
Alisa smiled. "You are far too big. Crush my thin arms and hands for heaven's sake!"
They exited the building to one of the resident's confusion. As they did, the police drove past.
"We should hide your face. Pull up your coat." Alisa said, looking back at the police car.
"No one would suspect me to be among the streets of New York. Besides, I look like any old man. Youngsters won't dare give a long look at my wrinkly body. Reminds them they'd effectually end up just like me. Assuming they live long enough. Even with all the wonders of modern technology, death remains a consistent part of our lives! Maddening, it is my dear." Silvermane ranted about as they strolled ever so slowly through the streets of New York undetected.
Spider-Man was leading Rhino back to where they initially began to fight as that area at least was main evacuated on the street level.
"Perhaps crushing you into a fine powder will being me peace!" Rhino pondered aloud.
'You can't do that! I mean, you literally can't." Peter replied.
"You unbearable simplistic childish twit! My endeavours at humourous remarks should make you snicker hastily!"
Spider-Man went behind Rhino while he ranted about his 'joke' as he called it.
"It wasn't that it was terrible, it was that you couldn't identify comedic intend even if it wiped you from behind!" Spidey said, leaping on Rhino's back, knocking on his headpiece. "Knock, knock."
"Get off! Rhino shouted.
"Get off whom?"
"Me!"
"Who's me?"
"I Alex O'Hirn, you thick-skulled idiot!"
"Say Alex. I think your unravelling? Can I call you Alex? I mean, even if I don't stop you today, saying your name means hiding will be tricky. Well, being a Rhino must also be a big red flag. No offence, my good sir."
"I'm going to rip you apart!" Alex cried out at the top of his lungs, ferous.
"That might have damaged my ears, could you repeat it?"
Rhino stopped talking finally and attempted to hit Peter with his horn swinging wildly.
"You're doing it wrong! Change at me first before using that horn of yours. Silly goose, Rhino man. Whatever you are. What do you identify as?"
Rhino continued to ignore all quips seeing red only. Intend on killing his enemy.
"I feel like steam is coming from your head. Perhaps you should open up, literally. Open your big suit, get some fresh air!" Rhino charged smashing into a car sending it into the air when it reached the ground it exploded.
"You're going to pay for that! Cause I'm not!" Spidey got an idea and leaped on top of his foe again.
Rhino struggled to get him off, stumbling around. "Get off me, damn you!" He fell over onto a car that exploded, tarring a hole in the suit.
I can't believe that worked. Figured it would take more than that to make a car go boom. Whatever, screw science in this case.
"No! Do you know how much this suit costs!" O'Hirn cried.
"Might be feeling woozy if I did. How are you feeling, buddy?"
Alex O'Hirn gritted his teeth. "Enough! This is over!" He shouted with all his might firing the six remaining rockets in his suit at Spider-Man.
"Holy!" He replied, evading them with some cars blowing up as five of them missed nearly missed. They did burn him slightly. In retaliation, he caught the sixth in mid-air, sending it right on back.
"No!" Rhino shouted as it hit him, damaging the suit, further exposing wires with the bonus of disorienting him.
Spidey now charged-off to his enemy gripping all the wires he could get his hands-on ripping them out with all his might. He was distracted, not realizing Rhino backhanded him into a non-destroyed car now creaking the door and windows.
Getting up, he said, "What's the matter?" Spider-Man paused. "Can't think of a good retort. Must have hit my head hard!"
"Bah! I can hardly sustain movement!"
"That sucks for you. This will suck even more!" Spider-Man replied, coming back and tearing more wires evading swings from Rhino.
"Must stall for longer!" He stated aloud.
"Stall?" Peter questioned while Rhino turned toward the police setting up a blockade heading towards them at half speed, still enough to cause serious trouble.
"Get out of the way!" Spider-Man yelled out to the cops as they shot relentlessly at Rhino's week points, doing nothing seemingly. He crashed through the blockade as the police moved for safety. Several police cars were damaged as now the ragging best was on a collision course with a busy street.
Spider-Man in hot pursuit leaped into his back pulling out wires with one hand and the other hand he hit the suit's head with all his strength bloodying his hand. In the nick of time, Rhino finally collapsed to the ground making a large Rhino sized dent in the ground. The suit opened, revelling a tiny man with glasses who was injured.
Spidey picked him up. "I'm not feeling so friendly neighbourhood how about you be kind and share what you're stalling for?"
"Too late. Bettle will end this. Silvermane dies." Alex said slowly and weekly.
"Has anyone seen an Iron Man wannabe? Looks like a Bettle?"
"Yeah, I saw him heading that way." An officer said, pointing to his right.
"Thank you and might want to send some more units after that creep too. He tried to kill me and know he's going after old man Silvermane," Spider-Man said, tried out from all that had happened so far in this short amount of time. Still, he head off into the direction given, hoping to catch Bettle. All the while, a defeated Rhino was cuffed and put in a not damaged police car.
"I'm going to get that insolent spider!" He shouted in the police car, shaking around.
"Sure, you will pipsqueak." The officer in the driver seat said, laughing.
Silvermane and Alisa made it to the safe house after walking for about three to four blocks. The safehouse was large and away from seeing eyes. They came in to be greeted by guards.
"Boss, why are you here?" One guard questioned.
"How have you not heard? We've been under fire!" Alisa affirmed, letting her father down a chair.
"Fisk. Send a dam Rhino after us. And a hired one of the Bettles to wipe us out." Silvermane added ferous.
"A Bettle? I didn't know they were contract killers!" Guard one said.
Guard two shook there head. "No. Military-grade suits, some business is trying to recreate that Iron Man tech. All were stolen and sold on the black market. One was stolen from the thieves ironically. Then was modelled more like a Bettle and therefore are assassin was born"
"How do you know this?" Guard one asked.
"I went to the briefing about it. You wouldn't know, do you even know what a briefing is?" Guard one did not respond, turning away.
"Enough! We need back up now!" Silvermane shouted. "Get everyone! Bettle is not to be tested! And we don't know if Spider-Man beat that Rhino. For all, we know they could be working together now to bring us all down!" Silvermane kept shouting.
"Father, watch your heart. Too much excitement for one day, Help him into the safe room. Now!"
A couple more guards helped carry Silvermane into a bedroom. Closing the door, Alisa went on her phone once again, looking at it intensely.
Spidey weekly swung over to where he was pointed towards.
No fire. That's a good sign. Also, no yelling, other than the typically expected nosy from a regular day in New York. Perhaps one of these kind citizens could tell me if they saw any human-sized Bettles running around. They flying around. Whatever.
"Hello citizens," Spider-Man said, getting on the ground trying to sound cheerful despite being in a sizable amount of pain from all he's experienced in the last couple hours. "Has anyone seen a flying Bettle man?"
A bunch ignored him looking, annoyed, aggravated or confused, apart from one person who came excited to see Spider-Man. Every word coming out of there mouth shouldn't be respoken every again. He went away quickly, bewildered by what on earth was just said, continuing to hunt for Bettle landing in another group of people.
"Please tell me you've seen a Bettle looking person flying around menacingly? Anyone?" He pretty much got the same response. The only change was someone took a selfie with him and went on their way. Before leaving to find somewhere else to search, someone approached, looking like they had an epiphany.
"Yes, Spider-Man! I saw that Bettle guy a couple of blocks for here flying above a torn down building, I think scanning it." They looked in their phone for an exact address. "Here." They said, pointing at the address.
"Yeah, yeah, I know that place. Always thought it was creepy. Thank you, citizen!" Peter chirped, tipping an imaginary hat to them. They were friendly and did the same.
Spidey went on his way quickly, getting up high for an aerial view running from rooftop and swinging, seeing nothing still.
Could I have been tricked? He thought getting closer. Above there was nothing, down below was another story. A car pulled up, and a couple of men came out of the seemly deserted building to meet them. He kept watching curiously as they all went inside.
My head is pounding better get ready to check this out. Peter thought, checking himself and web-shooters.
Silvermane got up, having knotting in his stomach, unable to feel safe. He couldn't read the room. He was laying down having a moment to breathe made him realize that his powers were not working to his shock. It was normal again, even struggling to get them to work did nothing besides giving himself a headache. On top of that, getting up was challenging. His old body was treating him worse every day.
Walking out into the main room multiple guards were talking.
"What's happening. Is anyone else coming?" Silvermane asked as not a soul said anything in response. "Come on! Someone speak up! We need to get out now!" Silvermane shouted in their faces.
The guards turned to him hands near their guns. Silvermane's face dropped.
"Change of plans." One said.
Spider-Man lowered to the ground. Three goons were on the watch out front radioing argumentatively. This was a positive occurrence, for Peter anyway.
Getting up above knocking the three oblivious goons was smooth landing in the top of one and kicking the other two to the ground. Yet something still felt wrong. His head continued to pound, letting him know to move out of the way. Bullets nearly hit him.
I'm seeing double! Spider-Man exclaimed internally, seeing two Bettles. Can't be two! Should not have asked if today could get any worse.
This new Bettle, who was purple instead of red, chased after him while the other who appeared to be the one that's been a pain up until this point went inside.
Spider-Man avoided laser shots knowing he was being stalled, but unable to get inside just yet.
"What the hell's going on!" Silvermane shouted.
Silvermane was treated to a silenced gunshot. Presumably from Bettle, who walked into the room casual.
"Alisa. Run!" He tried shouting, unable to see her as he fell to the ground.
She stood above him, holding the smoking silenced pistol while the guards watched then turned away heading outside
"No," Silvermane said softly. "Why?"
"Why? God, even in death, your lack of observance to the obvious still boggles my mind. What the hell do you think you did to deserve this father?" Alisa said, getting aggravated. "Just to name a couple. I knew Hammerhead was always next in line to run the business. Give it to a psychopath before your daughter. Why? Because it was improper? This is the 21st century when given a choice between a woman and a tested psychopath who wants to kill everything in sight. You give it to the sane person. Or find another choice."
"Why did you not say anything?" Silvermane said, pulling his head up slightly.
She got in his face and laughed. "I've been subtle with telling you and been less so. One time I got drunk and told you straight out, I believe."
"Never trust a drunk, it's my policy. You know that. Did you block my powers." He coughed.
"Yes. I knew about the trip to A.I.M. Paid a sizeable amount getting a way to counteract your ability to read my mind." Alisa said, backing away.
Silvermane face turned further into disappointment. "How could you think that? I would never invade your privacy." Silvermane said, feeling the blood dripping. "Even Hammerhead would be ashamed of your actions." He said coldly.
"Father. Tell me, is it worth it dying in a pool of your blood defending Hammerhead to the bitter end?"
Silvermane fell back down, bleeding out. "Yes, it is daughter. Hammerhead is brute with principles. He knows how to protect our business. You were not meant to have it. You were meant to get rewarded for doing nothing other than being my blood. Why throw it all away?" Silvermane asked shakily.
"Because I don't want to be another pretty face like mother was. She did nothing with her life. Just lech off you. It was perfetic to watch. Shameful that I came from that. To think that's what you thought of me all these years, a lech just like her."
Silvermane attempted to lift himself, only to fall once more. "I tried. To be a good father. I failed you. I'm sorry." He said, closing his eyes. Then he was treated to two more shots despite him already dying.
Alisa looked at what she did, finishing him off. Even after everything, leaving him in pain would've been disrespectful. She shed a couple of tears and quickly composed herself. She turned to Bettle and handing him the weapon, who proceed to clean it, wiping any fingerprints.
"You pay handsomely, Ms. Manfredi. For a job that does not require much effort," He said, looking at Silvermane's body.
"You have the important part. You are taking the fall for New York's former top crime boss murder. Not to mention mine. Your getting paid triple if you tell Fisk I'm dead."
Bettle shook his head. "That was not part of our agreement."
Alisa got in his face. "Plans change. Not to worry. This will be the last time I step foot in this city if I can help it. Going to change my life completely. You'll see." She started walking away, heading out a back door. "The money will be sent in an hour. I expect you not to rat me out. Or I'll have your head." She said, exiting the building.
Spider-Man learnt how that lesser felt meanwhile. Was not a kill shot, a stunner. It stopped his body from moving for a moment as he fell to the ground, for an average person that'd be out for the count. That's what purple Bettle figured approaching him while he pretended to be motionless.
"Tell me you're not dead. Don't want that on my conscious!"A female voice said, coming from the suit.
"Nope!" Peter replied, leaping into the area, kicking her back and webbing Bettle toward his fists. Knocking her down.
He took this chance to head inside and beat past the goons that arrived who went outside as he approached the door.
"Come on!" He shouted out loud upset beating past the goons efficiently rushing to get inside. He ran through the abanded building finding Bettle standing over Silvermane dead.
Spidey squinted his eyes and yelled. "I've had it with you!" Charging at Bettle.
"Agreed," Bettle responded, firing rockets above Spider-Man, hoping to bring the building down. The roof began to fall, debriey nearly crushing the hero. Bullets were fired rapidly as everything continued to crumble. The building was already coming apart. Rockets were the finishing touch.
Bettle saw a small crack out and zoomed his way though, avoiding all the ruble coming done on poor Spidey. He chased after the slippery foe nearly being crushed. To save himself, quickly bouncing off chunks of the building with the only out to safety as the whole thing collapsed. Bettle stared, firing more rockets hoping to let his adversary get buried beneath all the ruins. This failed getting treated to webbing in the eyes and a sharp uppercut. This knocked Bettle away, and in retaliation, he flew away quickly. The other Bettle could be made out in the distance, slightly waiting for him to fly over.
Spider-Man was exhausted, unable to give a chance and having to check on civilians as they came to view the disturbance.
Forentelly, the goons knocked out as he entered the building were out cold far enough from the building to be hurt. Police had seemed to arrive and take them into custody and blocking off the area. Spidey would commonly stay and chat. However, he felt like he was about to crash and headed away a couple of blocks laying on a roof.
Just going to lay here a min. He thought, before hearing what might have been an explosion. Quickly getting up revelled nothing, Spider-sense agreed. Tiredness was just getting to him.
Looking at the suit, it was damaged. Multiple new cuts and bruises on the suit and body.
Thank goodness for the interwebs. Ha webs. What a funny word. So much sowing needed. He thought closing his eyes, nearly falling off the building. Alright, no more hero work today. Sleep required. Going to need it.
After Peter went home for some R&R, Wilson Fisk got the call straight from Bettle. Silvermane was officially dead.
Delighted by this news checking on Venessa was essential. She was avenged. Safe at last. He was already on his way there. This was the day in the week he took out just so he could be with her the longest.
Coming to her room, doctors were just leaving it unhappy. Fisk's face changed red with rage. Gripping one the doctor's yelling. "What happened?"
"I'm sorry Mr. Fisk." The doctor said.
"No." Is all he said letting them down and rushing into the room to his horror, finding her dead. He had tears coming from his eyes, saying nothing hold her lifeless hands.
"Venessa."
Another doctor came in and said, "Her condition worsed today, we were trying to get into contact. Couldn't get a hold of you or your son either. Sorry, sir." They left quickly, not wishing to face the man.
Fisk heard, he did not respond just continuing to hold her and cry, holding nothing back.
Another downer ending. I might have an issue lol.
I sincerely hope you all enjoyed the Gang War arc. Peter did not at all.
I enjoyed finally getting to this arc! Behind the scenes, this arc had many changes. I'm ultimately happier with the finished product. With some groundwork, I wish that I did better with setting up. It's interesting having a plan, then realizing that ideas suck and I've significantly improved with some minor rewrites and some bigger ones that end up having a more significant impact and making me happier with the overall storyline. As I'm sure I've already stated, this whole thing will read better as a complete story. Loads of set up and some payoffs here, more to come.
Best wishes to you all as always.
