Kassidy Kane,18, District Six Female
"You can try all you like, darling, but I'm unforgettable"
Meg Ackerthorn.
Meg, short for Megan.
A sneer always appeared on her face at those two words. That name was dead to her, her new name coming to her when she was a since she found the Veil when she was a kid, she became enamored with what was inside. Maybe that was a reason as to why she turned out the way she did, but, to get to the present, her past and who she was as a person would have to be revealed.
And perhaps learn more about who she was now.
To everyone in the District, as soon as they met Kassidy, they knew one thing. She wasn't a boring person. Sure, the female had her times of being impulsive and sometimes callous but never boring. Oftentimes, she was capricious as well as self destructive but she never really let it get to her if she had any control over it. Perhaps that all started when she was younger, she always wondered what was the event that caused her to be like this.
Ever since she was a child, she couldn't help but feel as if she was put on the planet to do something more, either in general or with her life. Years of her life was spent searching for that reason, and yet she still had to find it. Perhaps that was why she liked to live on the edge, liked the chaos that she caused most times. It kept her life interesting and she wouldn't want to have it any other way.
Even though Kassidy had her moments of uncertainty, one thing she has never been able to shake was the effect that she had on other people. There was just some about who Kassidy was that drew people in like a moth to a flame. People always gravitated to her and wanted to be around her. Some called her a seductress but she liked to think it was the charming personality that she had.
So what if she liked to be nice.
Though, she supposed, her charm was the reason behind all the broken hearts that she had done.
Everything she did was like an adventure in its own way. Each day was a new thing to be done and she preferred it that way. Because of the joy that came with these, she pretty much got away with all of them because of how excited she was. The reasoning behind getting away with all of these schemes? The complete lack of fear that she felt.
Sometimes she thinks about what the consequences of her actions would be, but she still goes on with whatever plan she had in mind. Kassidy craves external validation as much as people crave to be near her. This in turn, drives her to extreme behavior if she thinks for a second that she's losing attention.
She also has a love for anything. If it's anything that gets her attention, she wants it for herself. Cars were one of the things District Six was known for and she was lucky enough to have two of them for herself. At least she took care of her things better than most people it seemed.
Her love of collecting things more than likely came from her childhood, which was anything than normal.
District Six was a place where anyone could find work if they tried hard enough. There were more than enough professions. Like what her mother did, brewing was something that she had grown up around. Her mother, Jeanine Ackerthorn called herself an alewife and created a wide variety of beverages to sell across the District. Kassidy, or Meg as she went by then, had learned the trade at an early age. This allowed her to help her parents in the business.
Then, one day would change her life and set her on a new path. Her mother had taken her to a nightclub-esque place. It was popular with the entire district especially with the ones that liked jazz and the prohibition era style. It was love at first sight for her, and a few weeks later announced that she would only go by what was her stage name, Kassidy Kane.
And then the big fight with her parents. What it was on, she has since forgotten. All she remembered was the pounding of her feet against the floor as she packed what little things she had before running out the door. She never looked back. Boredom could have played a part in it, she wanted to do more with her life than brew drinks all day.
This was her once in a lifetime chance.
The Veil was her chance. She walked straight in and told them that she would be their next star singer. The owner, Grisby Fox was charmed by her and offered her an audition. It didn't surprise her that she got hired but she was shocked when she found that she would only be a backup singer. But at least this allowed her room to grow in the business. At least she had a paying job and with her first few paychecks she started to pay for a house that was next to the club. Sleeping all day and performing at night. Her and Mr. Fox saw more and more of her and they started dating. The solo acts started soon after.
Their relationship didn't last that long and she met Eugene was a wealthy man and hit it off pretty well. Their relationship was that she'd keep him company and in return he'd pay for pretty much anything she desired. And it was nice. She liked this lifestyle and everything that happened and could have happened.
It's amazing how one night of bad decisions can mess everything up.
With a groan, the female's eyes opened, head already pounding and what light was let in through the dark curtains, hurt her eyes.
Where was she?
Memories from the night before started coming back in blurs. She had been stressed but at the same time relieved that someone like her would never gain the attention of the Capitol. The night was spent drinking with the club's house band. After the third bottle was when everything became a blur. Bits and pieces came to her, her flirting with one of the members of the band, him talking her by the hand and leading her to a dark corner.
Snoring tore her from her memories and she peered over beside her. At least she was in her own bed, and it wasn't a complete stranger next to her. The trombone player was still out of it and she took that as a time to get up and into the shower. After all, Fontaine was on his way to get her to take them both to the reaping and then out on a date afterwards.
After the shower was heated up, she let out a sigh of relief as the warm water hit her back. First thing she was going to do after getting out of the shower, was to get something for her head and some food. And maybe a smoke.
Definitely a smoke.
Her mind felt a touch clearer as she got out, dried off and put on her robe. A gift from Fontaine. The silk felt nice against her body as she sat on the counter and grabbed her makeup bag. She would rather die before letting someone see her without a full face of makeup on. A clock check assured her she'd have enough time.
Almost an hour later, she had her makeup on and hair placed into a bun at the top of her head. One of her old reaping outfits would do, a now faint red sundress that went down to her knees and a pair of black heels.
Making sure everything was in order, she went down the hall to her kitchen and made a couple pieces of toast. Her stomach still reeling from the night before. Surely the rest would come to her as the day went on. She grabbed a notepad from the counter and wrote a note to the guy in her bed. She kept it short but simple, telling him he can leave once he woke up and that this was a one time thing and it meant nothing to her. A knock on the door sounded and she couldn't help the grin that appeared on her face. Sure she wasn't in love with him, but she respected him and she considered them good friends.
People were all walking or driving to the reaping, and the two of the chatted aimlessly. They pulled into one of the parking spots with a few minutes to spare.
"I got you something, to celebrate your last reaping." Fontaine spoke as he pulled a small gift bag out the backseat. Kassidy grinned, cigarette half in her mouth as she took another drag. Her fingers tore into the paper and she pulled out a pretty sapphire necklace.
"Thank you," Her voice was soft as she put out the smoke and turned her back to him. "Put it on me will you?" His hands worked quick as it clasped the necklace around her neck.
"We're still on for tonight right?" She asked as she moved to pull her heels back on, noting the time
"Of course. I'll find you right after." He pressed a kiss to her lips before they both got out. Kassidy hummed to herself as she got check in, heading past people until she got to the middle of her age section. The District was alive and everyone seemed to be talking but she was content to just listen and chat to a few people besides her. Their eyes were glued on her necklace and she couldn't keep the grin off her face.
Odysseus came onto the stage not long after, looking vibrant as ever. He said the same thing as last year, with the addition on how exciting the quell was this year. Kassidy rolled her eyes at that and watched the video mindlessly. God was she glad she was finally fucking done with reapings after this.
"The female tribute chosen by the Capitol is Meg Ackerthorn!"
She found herself looking around for that person before it hit her.
That was her.
A sneer curled at her lips and she felt offended. They couldn't have used her actual name?
Her voice called out strong as she made her way down the aisle. ""I am not Meg Ackerthorn. That name is dead to me. I am Kassidy Kane for fuck's sake!" That quiet the talking crowd as she took the stage, something akin to a glare on her face.
"Moving on, the male tribute selected is Delaware Spires!"
Why was the trombone guy coming onto the stage?
Oh fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck.
Why her? Was this some sort of karma?
Trombone Guy was her district partner.
Their faces were blank as they shook hands. He would either be an ally or an enemy.
Only time would tell for the two of them.
And boy did they have a lot to talk about.
Delaware Spires, 18, District Six Male.
"The best pitches can mean all the difference between living and dying."
If there was anything in his life that made him happy, it was music. It was the one thing in his life that if it was just him, he never had to put on a facade. The peace was nice, compared to how his life had been growing up.
It was always loud at his house. Either it be from his younger siblings, the sound of the cars outside or the sounds of his very bad playing on his trombone. As the oldest of his parent's children, he felt like he was forced to grow up way too fast and much too early. He couldn't help but wonder how his life would have turned out if he could have been a child for a little longer. But, what happened, happened and there was nothing he could have done to change it. He speculated the cause was him dealing with both stress from home and school.
Dreams were often filled with him making it big with his music. He dreamed of making it out of the district, people all over Panem hearing it. Perhaps someone would have heard it and offered to take him and his little brother out of the mess that was their home. But day in and day out, he was still stuck.
Life only got worse for the boy when the accident happened. It was a blessing that his parents got out alive from it. The other people weren't so lucky though. Their family lost everything and if it wasn't for his aunt coming in at the right time, him and Dallas would have starved. He tried to find a job and helped out his aunt when he could. School was put on the backburner for a time.
He was fourteen when he landed himself a job at the Fontaine car dealership. Sure he had to deal with wearing worn, old fashion suits but it got him money. And as the paychecks came in, his pitching skills grew and that led to the charismatic mask taking place. Eventually, he started to hear about a not so secret underground bar and as soon as he heard that music was involved, he knew that was where he wanted to go.
This was his chance it appeared, and he would be stupid not to take it. Besides, it was time he finally did something for himself for a change.
And he got what he always dreamed of. He got a position working with the main band and while it was hard work, he was slowly starting to find himself again. But his mind still lingered, lingering on survival over pleasure, and worried that something will screw it up.
Of course, that all started with a drunken one night stand with Kassidy Kane.
The slamming of the door jolted him out of his slumber, his body. He hit the floor with a thud and blearily opened his eyes. His head was pounding and there was a dry taste in his mouth.
Where was he?
This was definitely not his place.
Bits of last night came back to him.
Music loud. He had downed almost four bottles by himself. Taking Kassidy by the hand and into a dark corner. Pressing her against the wall, hands wondering as their lips met. His fingers sliding down her thigh. Her, pulling him to her place. Tumbling into bed together as clothes were pulled off.
Of course, that was when he noticed some of the items around the room. A certain little black dress and red pumps that had been on the one and only Kassidy Kane. Rubbing his hands down his face, he took in the time on her clock.
Fuck.
Thirty minutes until the reaping started. Grabbing what clothes he could find, he slipped them on. Only after he noticed the note on the nightstand and just let out a laugh. Then immediately winced at the sound. Finding some pain pills in her cabinet, he swiped a couple before heading down stairs. Peeking out the window, his eyes widened as he saw her get into his Boss' car.
Fuck it all to hell.
He had just fucked his boss' lady.
The man had two rules and he just broke rule number two: Do not hit on his lady, no matter if it's his wife or an escort, do not mess with them in any way or the boss will have your head.
Delaware was a dead man if the boss ever found out.
Once the car pulled away and was a distance away, he made haste for his house a couple streets down. The door slammed against the wall as he all but bounded up the stairs, stripping out of last nights clothes and into a quick shower, not caring about the water temperature. It was him against the clock and he found himself dressed and drying his hair with a towel as he left the house, throwing it onto the couch.
Five minutes to spare.
A quick prick of a needle and he was sliding into the next available spot in his row, hands running through his hair. At least rushing to get there on time prevented him from overthinking about the whole event.
Odysseus came onto the stage not long after, looking vibrant as ever. He said the same thing as last year. The same fucking video played and Delaware found himself looking around. The other people his age were bored, the younger kids were holding hands, some had tears already falling down their face.
Beside their escort laid two glass bowls which would normally be full with name slips. But this year, there was only one.
The selected tribute.
"The female tribute chosen by the Capitol is Meg Ackerthorn!"
His eyes narrowed in confusion. He knew that name but couldn't place a finger to the name.
Her voice called out strong as she made her way down the aisle. ""I am not Meg Ackerthorn. That name is dead to me. I am Kassidy Kane for fuck's sake!" That quiet the talking crowd as she took the stage, something akin to a glare on her face.
Kassidy. Sounded just like something she would say.
Never call her by her birth name, duly noted.
"Moving on, the male tribute selected is Delaware Spires!"
Multiple things happened.
He had already been sweating but it only increased after his name was called.
Then his thoughts changed.
What would happen to his Aunt and Dallas? To his parents? To their things? He was their only source of real income. God damnit.
Why was he the one picked?
He was nothing special.
He was no one special.
Fuck was he screwed.
His legs felt weak and numb as he made his way up onto the stage, making sure to wipe his hand before he shook Kassidy's. The pair never met eyes before they were separated.
His only thought that was clear enough at that moment?
Stay the hell alive.
