August 2014, a marketplace on Earth.
In the bustling city, cars came and went. The clear sky was suddenly covered with dark clouds, the sun disappeared in an instant, strong winds surged, and the dark clouds rolled and churned, turning broad daylight into night in the blink of an eye. Trees in the green belt swayed wildly in the wind, almost uprooting themselves. Beautiful women wearing flowing dresses on the sidewalk exclaimed in surprise, holding down skirts that were nearly lifted by the wind and running into nearby cafés. Sunshades meant for shade were carried away by the wind, falling onto the road and rolling out of sight. Newspapers and magazines in the newsstands rustled loudly, and in the blink of an eye, they filled the sky.
"It's strange, the weather forecast clearly said there wouldn't be any rain this week, and this weather changed so quickly." The owner of a clothing store muttered as she moved her store's mannequins inside.
At the ice cream shop, handsome men and beautiful women in line for ice cream to beat the heat quickly left, hurrying back home.
"Boom—" a sound resembling a thunderclap resounded in the sky, accompanied by a dazzling burst of white light descending from above.
Pedestrians on the street closed their eyes in discomfort.
Unnoticed by anyone, a crack appeared in the now dark sky, as if a huge gap had been torn open, and two figures, one black and one white, stepped out as if walking on level ground.
These two individuals wore modern clothing, and both were young and handsome, exuding an unparalleled noble aura. They looked like a perfect match.
The smiling young man glanced downward with shrews eyes, his face showing joy. He then turned to the man beside him, "Yuchen, we're not in the wrong place. This is Earth."
The man's lips curved, affection evident in his eyes that could melt anyone, "It's an interesting place indeed. Baby, you better take good care of me in your territory."
"Don't worry, I won't sell you. I can't bear to." The young man laughed heartily, playfully kissing the man's lips.
These two were none other than Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen, who had left the Qingchuan Continent to embark on a journey through time and space.
"Let's go down quickly. Follow me." Yan Ge held Huangfu Yuchen's hand. He was genuinely worried about losing him, not because he feared not finding him, but because he was concerned about him facing difficulties in an unfamiliar place.
The two figures flashed by and disappeared.
Meanwhile, the dark clouds dispersed, and the scorching sun radiated its brilliant light, restoring calm to the world, as if the peculiar weather before had been a mere illusion.
The shop owners who had turned off their air conditioners due to the cold muttered as they turned them back on.
"This weather is really strange."
The "culprits" Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen had stealthily blended into the crowd. Yan Ge had already bought modern-style clothing for both of them from the system's store, so he was not worried about being out of place.
"We don't have the local currency here, we need to sell some gold, silver, and jewelry." Yan Ge said to Huangfu Yuchen. He had complete control over the system now and had already confessed everything about it to Yuchen. While they could shop in the system store, the best way for Yuchen to quickly adapt to modern life was to experience it firsthand.
"I'll listen to you." Huangfu Yuchen found it novel and enjoyable to depend entirely on his beloved for such matters.
Passersby looked at the two intertwined hands with strange eyes, but Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen paid them no mind, walking forward calmly. Occasionally, they heard a comment like "such a perfect match," and both of their lips curled upwards.
Yan Ge wasn't clear about the city they were in at the moment. They had to follow the street and search for a store that dealt in jade. Their luck was good, and they soon found one. They could tell from the glass walls that the store wasn't small.
A graceful and attractive female clerk with a sweet smile on her face approached, discreetly assessing these two customers who were anything but ordinary based on their aura. She had a hunch that she was going to be lucky today.
"Welcome. What can I help you gentlemen with?"
"We have a piece of jade to sell. Would you be interested?" Yan Ge inquired.
The female clerk felt puzzled, could these two be fallen nobles? But she didn't show it on her face, maintaining her polite demeanor. "We do purchase items. Please wait a moment; I'll bring our appraiser over."
The piece of jade Yan Ge presented wasn't ordinary, and the appraiser recognized its value. They offered 5 million as a price.
The price could have been negotiated higher, but Yan Ge wasn't particularly concerned about material possessions now. He nodded readily. Since they didn't have identification or a bank card, the manager gave them 200,000 in cash, and the rest was transferred to a temporary card which they could withdraw later.
Yan Ge expressed gratitude and generously left a tip for the female clerk from a stack of bills before walking away with Huangfu Yuchen and a bag full of cash.
Both the female clerk and the manager stared, amazed that these two were carrying so much cash without fear of being robbed.
After leaving the jade shop, Yan Ge pulled out a bill and introduced it to Huangfu Yuchen.
It had to be said that the worries of the female clerk and the manager were somewhat valid. The two of them were being followed by three men and one woman, none of whom were upstanding individuals. The leader was called Brother Ma.
Today, Brother Ma had brought his two underlings to the jade shop to pick out a birthday gift for his girl. Coincidentally, he saw Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen coming to sell jade. At first, Brother Ma didn't pay much attention, but when he saw Huangfu Yuchen come out of the VIP room carrying a bag filled with something, he immediately guessed they were carrying cash. Brother Ma got excited, signaling the other three with his eyes to follow them.
Brother Ma and his two underlings were confident in their skills. The girl wasn't someone to be trifled with in a fight either.
The plan was well-made. When they reached a secluded alley, the girl was responsible for grabbing the bag and running away, while the other three were responsible for dealing with Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen.
Unexpectedly, the girl tried to run after grabbing the bag, but she found herself unable to move it, as if it weighed a thousand pounds.
And the other three received a swift kick from Yan Ge before they could even touch his clothes and were unable to get up for a while.
The girl turned pale with fright. She quickly released the bag's handle, her back against the wall, torn between wanting to flee and fearing to.
Brother Ma immediately realized they had bitten off more than they could chew and nervously stepped back. "What, what do you want?"
Yan Ge secretly extended his hand, preparing to pull out Brother Ma's belt to tie the four of them together.
Huangfu Yuchen furrowed his brow and held Yan Ge's hand. "Baby, don't dirty your hands."
Unable to find anything else to use as a makeshift restraint, Yan Ge abandoned the idea. "Consider yourselves lucky. Get lost!"
The four people got up and fled.
"Tsk tsk, with skills like these, you might as well participate in a short-distance race and maybe win a championship." Yan Ge rubbed his chin. "Let's not bother about them, let's go."
Traveling in China required proper identification. Yan Ge took Huangfu Yuchen to the household registration office and used not-so-honorable methods (controlled them) to make the officials issue them identification cards.
Next, they went to buy phones. It was then that Yan Ge found out it was August 2014, just over two years since he had crossed over. They were in Shangshi, which was located in the central part of China. Even if they took the highway, it would still take them eight to nine hours to reach the capital
Since they were already back on Earth, Yan Ge decided to take it easy. He got a few bank cards, bought a laptop, a few sets of clothes, and some miscellaneous items. Carrying their modest luggage, they set off on the journey back to the capital.
Following the principle of letting Huangfu Yuchen experience the new life, they bought high-speed train tickets. The train compartment was spacious and comfortable.
Huangfu Yuchen sat beside Yan Ge, playing with his phone with great interest. He particularly liked the camera function and constantly took pictures of Yan Ge.
Yan Ge watched him with a smile, allowing him to continue.
Seated across from them were two girls who occasionally cast complex glances at Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen. They found the two young men on the other side quite handsome but regretted that good looks were wasted on one of them, looking like he came from some backwater. Otherwise, why would he play the photo-taking game for an hour or two without stopping? The other handsome guy seemed quite indulgent towards him too, changing the battery for his phone once it died.
"Is it fun?" Yan Ge asked Huangfu Yuchen with a smile. He knew they were being watched but didn't mind.
Huangfu Yuchen nodded, "Teach me how to play this game." He was referring to a gem-matching game.
"Okay." Yan Ge leaned closer. "Tap here to transform and change direction like this."
Huangfu Yuchen took it a step further and pulled Yan Ge into his arms, letting him rest against his chest.
The intimate posture excited the two girls across from them. They exchanged glances, stealing occasional glances at Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen. Their eyes were full of excitement, although they weren't exactly sure what they were excited about.
"First play some rounds, show me how it's done." Huangfu Yuchen requested.
With his breath tickling his ear, Yan Ge leaned closer to his chest and rubbed against it. "Okay, watch."
Yan Ge hadn't played games for a long time. Soon, he became engrossed. When he reached the third level, he failed twice in a row. His competitiveness was ignited, so he shifted his position in Huangfu Yuchen's embrace and continued to fight.
A faint smile curved at the corners of Huangfu Yuchen's lips. He could tell that Yan Ge was somewhat unsettled, perhaps due to the unfamiliar environment. Thus, he used this method to distract his attention, and it seemed to be working quite well.
"Ah, I lost again." Yan Ge turned his head in speechlessness.
Huangfu Yuchen's palm cradled his head, and he planted a kiss on his forehead. "Let me try."
A middle-aged man diagonally across from them stared at them, his face displaying a mix of disdain and contempt.
Huangfu Yuchen casually looked up and locked his icy gaze onto the man.
The middle-aged man was taken aback, feeling as if he was enveloped in a cold breeze. His hands and feet turned cold, and he quickly averted his gaze.
The two girls across from them grew even more excited. One leaned in toward the other's ear and whispered in a hushed voice, "Such a domineering gong!"
The other girl nodded repeatedly.
The corner of Yan Ge's mouth twitched.
Huangfu Yuchen's gaze returned to the phone screen, his fingers tapping swiftly.
"Congratulations, you've cleared the level!"
A few hours later, Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen walked out of the station with the crowd.
Yan Ge grew up in the capital city and later started his own company, often traveling around. This made him incredibly familiar with every place in the capital. But standing outside the train station now, he suddenly felt a bit lost.
"Yuchen, you also know that when I crossed over, my soul occupied another Yan Ge's body. I don't know whether the me here is dead or not… How about we find a hotel first?"
Huangfu Yuchen understood the principle of facing difficulties head-on rather than avoiding them. He held Yan Ge's waist and said, "Baby, why not make a call back, tell them you're Yan Ge, and see how your family reacts."
Yan Ge's eyes brightened, "That's a good idea. Why didn't I think of that?"
Huangfu Yuchen smirked, "Phones are useful."
Yan Ge raised an eyebrow, "What are you proud of? I taught you everything you know."
"Have you not heard the saying 'the student surpasses the master'?" Huangfu Yuchen chuckled. "Let's find a place to sit first."
Yan Ge remembered, "There's a café across the street."
At the café, they ordered drinks.
Yan Ge dialed the number to the Yan family mansion and after a couple of rings, someone answered, "Hello, this is the Yan residence."
Yan Ge recognized it was Auntie Wu's voice, "Auntie Wu, it's Yan Ge."
"Second, Second Young Master?"
Yan Ge raised an eyebrow. Could he have really died back then? Well, his soul had crossed over, so naturally, his original body would be deceased.
To his surprise, Auntie Wu continued, "Second Young Master? Are you okay? Where have you been? Why haven't you come home for so long?"
"Huh?" Yan Ge's mind worked quickly. "The situation here is quite complicated. I'll be back in a few days. Are my parents at home?"
"They're not."
"I see, I'll call them later."
Yan Ge hung up the call, feeling a bit befuddled.
Huangfu Yuchen had also heard the conversation on both ends and sent a voice transmission, "Based on what the other side said, it seems that the original you didn't die but went missing."
"Yeah." Yan Ge took out his notebook, "I'll look up the news from that time to see if I can find any clues."
After entering the time, location, and a few keywords, he quickly found the news from that time. It turned out that after he fainted, the Yan family quickly sent him to the hospital. However, on the same day, the floor where his hospital room was located caught fire. Thankfully, it was discovered in time, and there were no casualties. The only strange thing was that the Second Young Master of the Yan family had gone missing. The police had thoroughly investigated the matter, but due to the chaotic circumstances of that day, the investigation made no progress.
After some thought, Yan Ge dialed Yan Jiaqiang's phone.
"Hello, Yan Jiaqiang speaking."
"Dad, it's Yan Ge." Hearing his father's voice again, Yan Ge felt a surge of excitement.
Yan Jiaqiang's tone was flat, "Hmm, Auntie Wu called me just now. Since you're okay, why didn't you come back home earlier? Anyway, I'm busy here. We'll talk after you're back."
Yan Ge hadn't even managed to say a second sentence before the call was disconnected.
He sneered and abandoned the idea of calling his mother. Sometimes, he really doubted whether he was truly Yan Jiaqiang and Du Rulan's biological son.
"Baby, you have me." Huangfu Yuchen didn't like that expression on him. He picked up Yan Ge's hand and placed it on his leg, holding it there. "You also have Yan Xiaojing, Madam Yan, Yan Su, Yan Xiangtian."
Yan Ge nodded with relief, "Yes, I have you. We'll go live our own lives after seeing them. There are many fun things in this world, and I'll show you everything. After we've had our fill of fun, we can leave this place and travel to other places."
Huangfu Yuchen smiled, "Okay, I'll follow your lead. I rely on you for everything."
The two settled their bill and left, finding a hotel to stay in.
From the moment they left the café until they settled into the hotel, almost an hour had passed, and Yan Ge's phone hadn't rung.
Huangfu Yuchen's eyebrows furrowed tightly. Yan Ge suddenly looked over and he eased his expression. He released his grip and a hint of coldness flickered deep within his eyes. Auntie Wu was merely a servant; it would be impossible for her to hide such a major event like Yan Ge's return. Yet, no one had called to greet him. He could well imagine the cold treatment his beloved had received in the Yan family.
Yan Ge checked his watch, "Yuchen, it's almost six. Let's go downstairs and have dinner first. How about having Western cuisine?"
"Alright."
Huangfu Yuchen was adept at imitation, and Yan Ge's plan to witness a laughable moment was foiled.
Back at the hotel, Huangfu Yuchen "taught" his beloved in his own way, and the two didn't rest until it was almost dawn.
Having already decided to face the Yan family, Yan Ge no longer procrastinated. The next day, he brought Huangfu Yuchen to the Yan family residence. They intended to reclaim his properties as soon as possible, so they could lead their own peaceful life.
Before heading back, Yan Ge also made a phone call to inform the family.
At this point, it's worth mentioning who's currently in the Yan family. Yan Hengyuan and Yan Hengzheng were two brothers, and the two elders of the Yan family. Yan Hengyuan was the previous head of the family. He had two sons and one daughter: the eldest son Yan Jiaqiang, the second son Yan Jiagang, and the youngest daughter Yan Yunyun. A few years ago, Yan Hengyuan passed on the family head position to Yan Jiaqiang and became less involved in family affairs. Yan Jiaqiang married Du Rulan and had three sons: Yan Weifeng, Yan Ge, and Yan Yan.
Yan Jiagang's wife was Zhang Xiufen, and they had a son and a daughter, Yan Mingrui and Yan Xiaoxiao. Yan Yunyun, the daughter, married into the Liu family in the capital city. Since married daughters are like spilled water, there's no need to mention them further.
Yan Hengzheng, on the other hand, had only two children: his daughter Yan Ningxiang, who was married, and his son Yan Jiajie. Yan Jiajie's wife was Zhao Meimei, and the couple had a son named Yan Jingtao. Among the younger generation, Yan Weifeng, Yan Mingrui, and Yan Jingtao were already married with children. So, altogether, the Yan family was quite large.
When Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen arrived, the Yan family's living room was nearly filled.
Several pairs of eyes shot their gazes over. Yan Ge's footsteps paused, and he confidently walked alongside Huangfu Yu Chen.
Yan Xiaoxiao's eyes swept over Huangfu Yu Chen, and she secretly praised. She had always thought that her cousin was already quite the catch, but she hadn't expected this man to be several levels above him in terms of looks and temperament.
Yan Jiaqiang and Du Rulan scrutinized Yan Ge, confirming that he was their son. However, Yan Ge's demeanor had changed quite a bit compared to before, which left them somewhat surprised.
"Grandfather, Second Uncle, Dad, Mom." Yan Ge put down the gifts and greeted the two eldest family members, as well as his parents, before extending the greetings to several other elders.
"Yan Ge, where have you been these past two years?" Yan Jiaqiang furrowed his brows and spoke first. "If you were fine, why didn't you contact the family?"
Yan Ge said, "Dad, it wasn't intentional. I lost my memory and only regained it a few days ago. As soon as I did, I immediately called home."
"Lost your memory?" Yan Jiaqiang found it hard to believe.
Yan Ge didn't mind; he and Huangfu Yuchen were like they had appeared out of thin air. Even if Yan Jiaqiang investigated, he wouldn't be able to find anything.
"Who is this gentleman?" Du Rulan had noticed Huangfu Yuchen long ago. Just based on his aura, it was clear that he wasn't an ordinary person.
Yan Ge said, "His name is Huangfu Yuchen, my beloved."
A charming curve formed at the corner of Huangfu Yuchen's lips.
"Mr. Yan, Mrs. Yan, pleased to meet you."
The Yan family exploded.
"What?"
"Second Cousin is actually gay?"
"What did you say? Beloved?" Yan Jiaqiang's anger surged, his face turning pale.
Yan Ge smiled faintly, "Yes."
"Yan Ge! What are you talking about?" Du Rulan nervously glanced at the others, glaring at Yan Ge.
Yan Yan looked at Yan Ge with glee.
Yan Ge lowered his gaze, then looked up again, "Dad, Mom, a lot has happened to me over the past two years. Why haven't you asked me anything?"
Both Yan Jiaqiang and Du Rulan were taken aback.
Yan Jiaqiang quickly regained his composure and grew angry, "No matter what happened to you, you shouldn't be associating with another man!" He even suspected that his second son had done this deliberately, intentionally revealing such a shameful matter in front of so many people just to make others laugh at him.
"Yan Ge, make him leave immediately. Our Yan family doesn't welcome him!" Du Rulan's cheeks were flushed with anger, pointing at Huangfu Yuchen.
Yan Ge held Huangfu Yuchen's hand, "You are my parents, and I respect you. That's why I brought him here for you to meet. Since you don't welcome him, we'll leave."
With that, he pulled Huangfu Yuchen and left without looking back. He decided to let go of the properties and companies he had planned to reclaim.
"You, you wretch! If you dare to step out that threshold, don't bother coming back to me!" Yan Jiaqiang couldn't contain his anger, picking up the ashtray from the coffee table and hurling it at Yan Ge.
Huangfu Yuchen raised his hand and caught the ashtray before it hit Yan Ge's back. He turned around and looked calmly at Yan Jiaqiang.
"Yuchen, let's go," Yan Ge spoke as if he was unaware of what had happened behind him.
Huangfu Yuchen raised his hand, and the ashtray flew back smoothly. It landed on the coffee table with a soft "thud," without slipping even a bit.
Everyone was startled, staring at the ashtray in disbelief. It was made of glass!
"Yan Ge!" Yan Weifeng called out, patting Yan Jiaqiang's shoulder, "Dad, Mom, don't get too upset. I'll go talk to Yan Ge."
Yan Yan's eyes gleamed mischievously, then he followed suit.
Before Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen could hail a taxi, Yan Weifeng and Yan Yan caught up to them.
"Yan Ge."
Yan Ge halted, "Big brother, is something the matter?"
Yan Weifeng glanced at Huangfu Yuchen, "Let's talk in private. I'm your big brother, so I have the right, don't I?"
Yan Ge smiled and shook his head, "Anything involving me concerns Yuchen as well."
Yan Weifeng furrowed his brows.
"Second brother, I support you!" Yan Yan tilted his head and grinned at Yan Ge, then playfully winked at Huangfu Yuchen. However, Huangfu Yuchen didn't even glance in his direction, causing Yan Yan to scrunch up his nose.
"Alright, today is chaotic. I'm afraid we don't have time now. What's your phone number? Let's schedule a time to talk." Yan Weifeng said.
Yan Ge provided him with his phone number.
"Oh, by the way, big brother, who's taking care of my properties and the company now?"
Yan Weifeng explained, "When you initially disappeared, a missing person's report was filed. Your properties are still in your name, and Jingtao has been overseeing your company."
"I understand. We're leaving."
"Wait." Yan Weifeng called out to Yan Ge, but he didn't know what to say. He wasn't sure what had happened to his younger brother, but he was finding it increasingly difficult to understand him.
"Actually, even if you want to be with Mr. Huangfu, you could gradually explain it to Mom and Dad. They might find it easier to accept," Yan Weifeng's tone held a touch of reproach.
"It won't work."
Yan Ge's confident tone left Yan Weifeng momentarily speechless. He subconsciously asked, "Why?"
Yan Ge smiled faintly, "Big brother, apart from providing me with basic necessities, when have you ever heard Mom and Dad proactively care about me? They haven't even shown concern for me once. How could they possibly accept me being with Yuchen? In that case, it's better to be straightforward."
Yan Weifeng was at a loss for words.
Yan Ge nodded at Yan Weifeng, then got into the taxi with Huangfu Yuchen.
Yan Weifeng stood still for a moment, speechless.
Yan Yan leaned against Yan Weifeng's shoulder, "Big brother, what do you think about that man named Huangfu Yuchen? In my opinion, his background is definitely extraordinary."
Yan Weifeng said calmly, "Let's talk inside first."
As they reached the entrance, Yan Jiaqiang and Du Rulan were seeing off the guests. Yan Jiangang and others expressed consoling words to Yan Jiaqiang and Du Rulan on the surface, but their eyes held a malicious glee. To think that Yan Jiaqiang's second son was actually gay – that was a huge scandal, enough for them to gossip about for days.
Yan Jiaqiang and Du Rulan could easily guess their thoughts, which made them even more infuriated with Yan Ge. They suppressed their displeasure and saw the guests off.
The living room was left with Yan Hengyuan, Yan Jiaqiang, Du Rulan, Yan Weifeng, and Yan Yan. Yan Weifeng's wife, Zhang Qiaoqiao, had taken her four-year-old son, Yan Si, to the second floor once she heard that Yan Ge was gay.
The servants had been dismissed by Du Rulan, otherwise Yan Jiaqiang and Du Rulan would be even more exasperated.
The senior members of the family remained silent, and Yan Weifeng also maintained his composure.
Yan Yan lounged on the sofa, amusing himself with a small cat he had raised.
"That prodigal son!" Yan Jiaqiang sat down heavily on the sofa. "He dared to come back even after being involved with a man! Why did he come back?"
Du Rulan kept rubbing her chest, her brows furrowed together.
Yan Hengyuan took a sip of tea. "I think this is partly your fault. Have you ever cared about him from childhood to now? Do you even know what kind of person he is?"
Du Rulan turned her head. "Father, what do you mean we didn't care about him? Did we deprive him of food or drink? Look how he's repaying us."
Yan Jiaqiang was momentarily taken aback by Yan Hengyuan's counter-question. After a pause, he said, "Father, does it matter now? Just watch, within a day, Jiagang will spread this matter. He thinks I didn't know he's been coveting my position!"
Yan Hengyuan remained composed. "Rest assured, if he does that, it will be like harming himself a thousand times to harm the enemy once."
Yan Jiaqiang thought about it and realized it was true. He felt a bit relieved. "But I won't agree to Yan Ge's matter!"
Suddenly, Du Rulan remembered something. Her eyes brightened, and her chest stopped hurting. She chimed in, "Of course, we can't agree! Our Yan family's company has encountered some issues recently and we were considering collaborating with the Zou family. Since Yan Ge has come back, it's a perfect opportunity. If he marries the Zou family's young lady…"
Yan Jiaqiang's mind raced: it did seem like a good idea.
Du Rulan didn't notice his expression. "I get angry just thinking about it. If he had successfully married Luyanyan back then, our Yan family wouldn't have ended up like this. Thankfully, he's back now. Marrying him to the Zou family's daughter would be a win-win situation. It would separate him and that man while helping our Yan family."
"Weifeng, what do you think?" Yan Jiaqiang looked at his eldest son who had been silent.
Yan Weifeng, "Dad, we should first investigate that man around Second Brother. He doesn't seem like an ordinary person."
Only now did Yan Hengyuan speak again. "Weifeng has a thoughtful point." He glanced at Yan Jiaqiang. As he aged and relinquished power, he didn't want to get involved in such matters, but he would still offer some advice when the timing was right.
Yan Jiaqiang had calmed down by this point. "Yes, I neglected that. Weifeng, I'll entrust this matter to you. You must find out what's going on between Yan Ge and that guy surnamed Huangfu."
"I understand, Dad." Yan Weifeng agreed.
Yan Yan walked to Du Rulan's side, hugging her arm. "Mom, I'm hungry."
Du Rulan patted his arm, scolding gently, "Always thinking about food." Despite her words, there was no hint of displeasure on her face. Instead, her eyes held a smile. She then instructed the servants to prepare the meal.
Yan Hengyuan stood up. "Alright, I'll return to the villa now." The villa he referred to was Emerald Villa, a green dining establishment under the Yan family's name. As he aged, he nurtured himself in the villa.
"Father, stay for dinner first." Yan Jiaqiang tried to persuade.
"Yes, Father," Du Rulan added.
Yan Yan grabbed Yan Hengyuan's arm, shaking it lightly. "Grandpa, stay a few more days before leaving. I don't want you to go."
"No need. Alright, be mindful of your words and actions. What kind of image does it give for a grown man to act so spoiled!" Yan Hengyuan looked at him with a faint smile.
Yan Yan retracted his hand awkwardly, forcing a smile. "Understood, Grandpa."
Yan Hengyuan's tone changed when he spoke to Yan Weifeng, a kind expression in his eyes. "Weifeng, if you have time, take Little Si to the villa for a few days."
"Yes, Grandpa. I'll bring him to visit you this Friday. Take care on your way." Yan Weifeng respectfully agreed.
Yan Hengyuan nodded. "Alright, I'm leaving. No need to see me off."
As the main door closed, Yan Yan angrily flopped onto the sofa. That old man's tone was as unpleasant as ever. He knew the old man didn't like him, so there was no need to approach him.
Du Rulan also felt dissatisfied, complaining to Yan Jiaqiang, "Sometimes Father's words are too harsh. Look how he spoke about our Yan Yan. What's wrong with our Yan Yan being close to him?"
Yan Jiaqiang furrowed his brows. "Alright, it's just a few words from an elder to a junior. What's the big deal? I have work at the company. I'm going back."
"What's so urgent at work? Can't you leave after having dinner? Be careful while driving." Du Rulan watched as he headed toward the door and had no choice but to grab his briefcase and remind him.
"I know."
Yan Jiaqiang's patience seemed to wear thin, but Du Rulan didn't notice.
After Yan Ge and Huangfu Yu Chen left the Yan residence, they went house-hunting. In order to let Huangfu Yuchen experience modern life, they decided to stay in this time period for a few years at least. Having a place of their own was necessary. Additionally, as their cultivation grew stronger, progressing took more time. There was no rush to leave in the short term.
They chose a semi-mountain villa with picturesque scenery. It was serene and pleasant, though the air wasn't as fresh as in ancient times. Yan Ge used a few spiritual stones to arrange a simple gathering array, upgrading the villa from basic to upscale. The air became fresher, and even the flowers and plants in the villa flourished under the nourishing spiritual energy, becoming exceptionally vibrant. There were other residents on the mountain, but they were far enough away that there was no need to worry about anyone noticing anything unusual here.
Afterward, they spent two days buying furniture and vehicles before finally settling down. Regarding their cars, both of them unconsciously chose more imposing SUVs: a blue one and a black one. Since Huangfu Yu Chen didn't have a driver's license yet, Yan Ge planned to teach him personally. He also intended to ask a friend for help arranging a driving test as soon as possible.
A house only felt like home when it smelled of food, so they decided to cook a meal to celebrate setting up their new home.
"Baby, I think at least one of us should learn some cooking skills." Huangfu Yuchen looked at Yan Ge, who appeared completely composed but when he put the fish into the pan, a burnt smell wafted out immediately. Hastily, he added a bowl of water into the pan, producing a "pff" sound. It seemed the burnt smell only intensified.
"Look at you, causing trouble." Yan Ge remarked. "We still had a chance to salvage it."
"Really?" Huangfu Yuchen looked at the pan skeptically. Could it be saved when it had turned black from being burnt? Wasn't this just bullying him because he was from ancient times.
Yan Ge changed the subject. "Didn't you say you are very talented? Okay, you learn how to cook."
"Okay."
'He agreed so readily?' Yan Ge raised an eyebrow. "Are you serious?"
"Absolutely."
Yan Ge felt quite pleased. Taking off his apron, he said, "Good. I'll sign you up for cooking classes now."
Huangfu Yuchen sat on the armrest of the computer chair, watching. He took out a small pastry from his storage ring and fed it to Yan Ge.
At that moment, Yan Ge's phone rang.
"Can you answer it for me?" Yan Ge's attention was on the computer screen.
Huangfu Yuchen picked up the call and activated the speaker. "Who's this?"
"Um… hello, I'm Yan Ge's old friend, Xu Kai. You must be Yan Ge's boyfriend, right?"
'Boyfriend?' Huangfu Yu Chen's lips curved. "Yes, nice to meet you. I'm Huangfu Yuchen."
"Mr. Huangfu, I've heard a lot about you. A few of us old friends heard that Yan Ge is back and thought about inviting him for dinner. We're not sure when he's free."
Yan Ge was focused on the webpage, saying, "Little Xu Kai, I'm available tomorrow. I'll treat you guys. Could I trouble you to inform them, I've lost their phone numbers."
"Yan Ge! How many times do I have to tell you not to call me Little Xu Kai!" Xu Kai was jumping on the side. "Since you're treating us, we're going to bring our families along." The implicit meaning behind his words was obvious.
Yan Ge chuckled. "Same here, I'm bringing my family too."
Huangfu Yuchen nodded in satisfaction. The word "family" was worthy of praise.
"That sounds about right. What time and place?"
Yan Ge thought for a moment. "Emerald Villa, tomorrow night at 7 o'clock."
"OK. See you tomorrow."
Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen arrived five minutes early at Jade Emerald Villa. They walked up to the designated private room, pushed the door open, and after a momentary pause, smiled.
"Sorry, we're late."
Everyone inside the room stood up, some reassuring Yan Ge that it was fine, while others appraised Huangfu Yuchen.
A tall, thin man walked up to Yan Ge and playfully punched his shoulder. "You rascal, we got here early. Won't you introduce us?"
Yan Ge generously put his arm around Huangfu Yuchen's waist. "This is my partner, Huangfu Yuchen. You can just call him Huangfu. Yuchen, let me introduce you: this is my old classmate, Xu Kai. We've been classmates from high school to university. This is his wife, Wu Qian. Wherever they go, they're the model couple. And this is Yang Fan, I've known him for about four or five years. This is He Xin, an old friend. And this gorgeous lady is Lu Hanya."
"Nice to meet you." Huangfu Yuchen adapted to the situation, shaking hands with each of them.
Yang Fan, He Xin, and Lu Hanya's partners were strangers to Yan Ge, so the three introduced their family members themselves. Now, everyone in the room knew each other.
Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen were the only male couple, creating a somewhat awkward atmosphere. Even Xu Kai, who seemed the most outgoing, couldn't help but secretly scrutinize Huangfu Yuchen. In terms of appearance and temperament, Huangfu Yuchen was certainly worthy of Yan Ge, but they had little exposure to same-sex couples, making the situation a bit awkward.
Huangfu Yuchen suggested, "Shall we sit down and chat?"
"Yes." Yan Ge led Huangfu Yuchen to their seats. "Have you all placed your orders?"
Others also took their seats.
Xu Kai chuckled, "If Boss Yan didn't show up, who would dare to order?"
"Exactly," Lu Hanya smiled sweetly, "Boss Yan, are we free to order anything today?"
"Of course," Yan Ge responded, "Order whatever you like. If I don't have enough money, I can always stay and wash dishes."
Laughter filled the room, and the atmosphere finally became more relaxed.
Huangfu Yuchen added, "No need to order drinks for now. I brought a jar of wine that's both sweet and not too intoxicating. I think everyone will enjoy it. The lovely ladies can also have a taste. It's refreshing and good for the skin."
No wonder there was a faint smell of wine earlier. Everyone's gaze shifted to the bag in Huangfu Yuchen's hands, watching him take out a rustic wine jar. Everyone was curious. Such wine jars were usually seen in period dramas. Could this wine really have some extraordinary qualities?
Yan Ge explained, "Don't underestimate this wine. It's brewed using Yuchen's family's ancient method. I won't say much, you'll know once you taste it."
The mention of ancient brewing techniques heightened their interest. They believed that this man wouldn't bring something poorly made to his partner's friends' gathering. If it didn't deliver, wouldn't that be embarrassing?
With orders placed, the conversation continued.
Knowing Yan Ge's friends had a lot to say to him, Huangfu Yuchen stood up. "Excuse me for a moment, I'll use the restroom."
"Turn left after you exit," Jade Emerald Villa was the Yan family's property, so he was familiar with the layout.
"I won't get lost," Huangfu Yuchen patted Yan Ge's head, then opened the door and left.
Xu Kai, He Xin, Yang Fan, and Lu Hanya immediately gathered around Yan Ge.
"Yan Ge, where have you been all this time?" Xu Kai couldn't wait to ask.
He Xin added, "Yeah, when we heard you went missing, we searched everywhere but couldn't find any news."
Yan Ge explained, "I was kidnapped and then had an accident that caused memory loss. I don't remember anything."
Yang Fan was surprised, "You're the second young master of the prestigious Yan family. Who would dare to kidnap you?"
"Not sure. I was drugged, woke up alone in the deep mountains. That's where I met Yuchen." Yan Ge changed the topic, "Enough about that. It's all emotional. By the way, I haven't congratulated He Xin and Yang Fan on their recent wedding. This is a belated gift from Yuchen and me. It's just a small gesture." He took out two identical brocade boxes from his bag.
"What wedding? We've been married for years, no need to be so formal," He Xin declined.
He Xin's wife, Long Miaomiao, was an easygoing woman a she said with a smile, "No need for a wedding gift. Our daughter turns one next month. Yan Ge, you better prepare a birthday gift in advance."
Yan Ge smiled, "The little princess is almost one year old? Congratulations! I'll definitely prepare another gift then."
Yang Fan accepted the gift and handed it to his wife, Lu Xin. "Keep it. Yan Ge's gift must be something good. Don't refuse."
Lu Xin playfully scolded him, "You have such thick skin."
Yang Fan grinned, "We'll give them a gift when they have their wedding feast, won't we?"
Yan Ge chuckled, "Perhaps that day will come soon."
"Ah," Lu Hanya playfully slapped Yan Ge's shoulder, "Are you serious? I never heard you say you liked men before. Didn't you used to date women?"
"Really," Yan Ge admitted candidly, "I've always been attracted to men. But before, I was either busy studying or working, never had time for dating. So, naturally, I didn't randomly tell you all I liked men. But he's great."
The two words "He's great" held many implications. Xu Kai and the others understood and didn't pry further, shifting to lighter topics. They teased Lu Hanya and her somewhat shy boyfriend and chatted while waiting for the food to arrive.
Huangfu Yuchen timed his return well, sitting down just as the dishes were being served.
He placed the wine jar on a tray and smoothly peeled off the clay covering the opening, not spilling a single speck. This skill impressed Xu Kai and the others. Opening the wine jar released an inviting aroma, stimulating their senses. The fragrance invaded their nostrils, awakening their spirits. The scent effortlessly stirred everyone's appetites.
"Excellent wine!" Xu Kai sincerely praised.
Little did they know, the fragrance had stirred up a commotion among the guests in the hall outside the private room. The aroma lingered, even enticing some non-drinking female patrons to inquire about the wine from the staff.
The staff felt helpless; this wasn't the villa's wine. How were they supposed to explain?
Inside the private room, Huangfu Yuchen poured wine for everyone with expert precision.
Yan Ge watched him secretly, musing how lucky his friends were. Having an emperor personally serve them was quite an honor. But he, as the emperor's man, was even luckier.
Huangfu Yuchen glanced at him with a smile and continued pouring the wine.
As everyone knew, wine jara had wide openings and were prone to spills while pouring. Yet, Huangfu Yuchen managed to pour wine into each glass accurately, without a single drop wasted. Xu Kai and the others were genuinely impressed.
"Give it a try," Yan Ge eagerly took a sip.
Yang Fan took a sip but didn't immediately swallow. He savored the taste before letting the liquid glide down his throat. "Rich, smooth, and fragrant, wonderful wine!"
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Yan Jiaqiang entered with a somber expression, his smile fading upon seeing Yan Ge by the table.
"Yan Ge, what are you doing here?"
"Dad." Yan Ge walked over, smiling faintly, his demeanor calm. "I'm treating my friends to a meal. Do you need something?"
Yan Jiaqiang was about to flare up but remembered his main purpose for coming. He suppressed his anger. "I wanted to ask about the fragrance of the wine here."
Yan Ge casually replied, "Oh, this wine is brewed using Yuchen's family's ancient method. The taste is quite robust."
Yan Jiaqiang's thoughts shifted. "I see. Alright then, enjoy your time with your friends and come home for lunch tomorrow. We haven't had a meal together as a family since your return."
Yan Ge agreed, turned, and went back to the private room.
Seeing Yan Jiaqiang's expression, Xu Kai and the others assumed he had learned about Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen's relationship. Without asking, they continued discussing light topics, letting Lu Hanya and her somewhat shy boyfriend join the conversation while they awaited the arrival of the food.
After a satisfying meal, everyone was in high spirits.
Yan Ge then sent his friends off in a taxi. He and Huangfu Yuchen didn't drive, instead opting to stroll along the road.
"Thinking about your father?" Huangfu Yuchen asked.
"I don't know how he plans to use me again," Yan Ge looked up at the sky, "Several times before, I couldn't help but wonder if I'm really his biological son."
Huangfu Yuchen recalled Yan Jiaqiang's appearance. There was a striking resemblance between Yan Jiaqiang and Yan Ge. "If you don't want to go, then don't. Xiao Ge, I don't want you to feel wronged or force yourself."
"Since I've already agreed, I'll go," Yan Ge had a plan in mind, "If they want me to do something I'm unwilling to do, I'll just refuse directly."
"I'll go with you tomorrow," Huangfu Yuchen didn't have a good impression of Yan Jiaqiang, Du Rulan, Yan Weifeng, and especially Yan Yan. Yan Yan appeared innocent on the surface, but it was far from the truth.
Yan Ge shook his head, "No need. I also want to have an honest conversation with them."
Huangfu Yuchen was about to say something, but Yan Ge slyly raised an eyebrow, "Don't forget the cooking class I arranged for you."
Huangfu Yuchen thought about his beloved- he wasn't one to tolerate being taken advantage of, so he abandoned the thought.
The next day, Yan Ge drove Huangfu Yuchen to his cooking class. Afterward, he wandered around until around eleven before heading to the Yan family home.
"Welcome back," Du Rulan greeted him.
"Mom," Yan Ge smiled lightly, calling out. He saw Yan Jiaqiang, Du Rulan, Yan Weifeng, and Yan Yan all in the living room.
Du Rulan said, "Good timing, you can wash up and then we can eat."
After washing his hands, Yan Ge came out. The servants had already set the table with food, and Yan Jiaqiang and the others were seated around it.
"Let's sit down and eat," Yan Jiaqiang's tone was gentle.
Yan Ge was now more certain that his parents had some ulterior motive, seeing that they were all being so amicable. However, he didn't show it, quietly eating and occasionally answering his parents' questions.
After the meal, the family gathered in the living room.
"By the way, Yan Ge, did the wine in your private room last night really come from that Mr. Huangfu?" Yan Jiaqiang inquired.
Yan Ge answered truthfully, "It was brought by Yuchen. It's brewed using the Huangfu family's ancient method. The taste is different from regular wine. Dad, if you like it, I can have him send you a jar."
Yan Jiaqiang continued, "Of course, that's great. But do you know how the wine is brewed?"
Yan Ge sneered internally and smiled, "I'm not sure. Yuchen did mention he was interested in teaching me, but I wasn't interested in learning and didn't ask him about it."
Yan Jiaqiang's disappointment showed in his narrowed eyes, "I see. Yan Ge, you know that Jade Emerald Villa specializes in cuisine and emphasizes green and uniqueness. So, what I mean is, can you ask Mr. Huangfu if he's willing to sell the recipe? Just think about it, the unique recipe could bring tremendous profits to our Yan family!"
Yan Ge shook his head, "Dad, you're really putting me in a difficult position with this matter. It seems like Yuchen intends to start his own winery, so it's unlikely he'd sell the recipe."
Du Rulan furrowed her brows, "Didn't you say he's your lover? What kind of lover does not even give you this bit of face?"
Yan Ge was left speechless. He truly couldn't believe that such words were coming out of Du Rulan's mouth.
After a brief silence, he spoke again, "So, Mom and Dad, does this mean you both accept my relationship with him?"
"Impossible!" Du Rulan's face turned cold as ice, and she said sharply.
Yan Ge found it amusing, and he actually burst into laughter, "Mom, Dad, in fact, I wanted to ask you both a long time ago: am I really your biological son?"
"Nonsense!" Yan Jiaqiang abruptly stood up, "You ungrateful child! How could you say something so disrespectful to your parents?" He raised his hand, intending to slap Yan Ge.
Yan Ge caught his wrist, pushed it away calmly, and stood up, "Yuchen's class is ending soon, I should go."
"Yan Ge! How did you become like this?" Du Rulan suddenly felt that her second son was very unfamiliar. The previous Yan Ge was obedient, filial, always thinking of them, willing to do anything they asked, but now he's so rebellious. He not only lacks respect for them, but treats them like strangers. Is this really her second son?
Yan Ge took a couple of steps and then stopped.
Du Rulan snorted and raised an eyebrow at him, waiting for him to apologize.
"Mom, Dad, I've given you my company and several properties. Whenever you have time, you can handle the paperwork," Yan Ge said without looking back and left.
"Dad, I'll talk to him," Yan Weifeng followed him. He felt something odd about Yan Ge. He had someone investigate Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen, but they only found that the two of them appeared in the commercial area and then traveled to the capital city. Apart from that, there was nothing else. It was as if these two had just appeared out of thin air. This made him more certain that Huangfu Yuchen's identity wasn't simple; otherwise, how could they hide their origins so deeply? He didn't dare to act rashly, which is why he hadn't intervened earlier.
Yan Ge knew that Yan Weifeng had followed him. He didn't walk quickly, and when Yan Weifeng approached, he turned and waited. He secretly observed him, realizing that in the Yan family, he truly seemed like an outsider. He wasn't close to his parents, nor did he have a strong bond with this older brother. Yan Ge remembered that in their childhood, the relationship between the two brothers was fine, but as Yan Weifeng grew older, Yan Jiaqiang began to groom him as the heir. Yan Weifeng always seemed busy, and even when they did meet, it was just a pat on the shoulder. Yan Ge had wanted to be close to his older brother when he was young, but as he grew older, that desire faded. Later, when Yan Yan came along, Yan Jiaqiang and his wife treated him like a treasure, even Yan Weifeng became more fond of Yan Yan. It could be said that Yan Ge grew up in his family's negligence; not going astray was a stroke of luck.
Yan Weifeng approached. "I mentioned that I wanted to talk to you last time. Do you have time now?"
Yan Ge smiled and nodded. "Actually, I wanted to talk to you too. Get in the car."
Yan Weifeng got in, and Yan Ge didn't start the car.
"Big brother, what do you want to talk about?"
Yan Weifeng said, "Today's matter was indeed wrong on Mom and Dad's part. But you also know, Dad's always been forceful and a bit self-centered, he didn't intend to hurt you. As for Mom, she's a bit spoiled, but we juniors should try to understand."
"I'm willing to understand," Yan Ge nodded with a smile, "But understanding doesn't mean I'll simply follow their every arrangement. If you're here to discuss the matter of the wine recipe, there's no need for further explanation. And if you're trying to advise me to break up with Yuchen, it's also not possible."
Yan Weifeng was taken aback.
"Here's the thing: I won't have any financial involvement with the Yan family from now on, and I'll have control over my own life. You can pass this message on to Dad and Mom." Yan Ge dropped a bombshell with a casual tone, and then added nonchalantly, "By the way, big brother, I want to ask you, do you think it's possible that I'm not really their biological son?"
Yan Jianqiang and Du Rulan had always been cold toward him, and Yan Weifeng had noticed it too. It seemed strange, but it wasn't his concern, and he was usually too busy to pay attention to such matters.
"… Of course, you're their biological son."
Yan Ge's reply was quite flat. "Oh," he said, "Well then, I'll leave it to you and Yan Yan to take care of them."
"What do you mean?" Yan Weifeng stared at him intently and asked in a deep voice.
Yan Ge smiled, "Since my parents don't like me, there's no need for me to keep appearing before them. Give it some time, and when Yuchen gets his driver's license and passport, we'll travel. You and Yan Yan can show them filial piety."
By completely excluding himself from the Yan family, Yan Ge gave Yan Weifeng a sense of bewilderment.
"You should sit down and have a proper talk with Mom and Dad."
"No need." Yan Ge tapped the steering wheel lightly and said casually, "You also know how much effort I put in before to gain their approval, but I've never succeeded. There's no need for it now."
He glanced at his watch, "I need to go pick up Yuchen."
Yan Weifeng could only get out of the car, watching the blue off-road vehicle drive away. He felt an inexplicable sense of emptiness, as if the Yan family would surely regret this in the future.
After class, Huangfu Yuchen walked downstairs. Yan Ge hadn't arrived yet, so he stood by the roadside waiting.
Several girls who had attended class with him looked at him with admiring eyes. This man was already of high quality, and now that he had learned cooking, he was even more perfect. Unfortunately, this good man was already spoken for; otherwise, why would he be learning cooking?
"Hey handsome, where are you going? Let me give you a ride," a beautiful woman in a convertible stopped in front of Huangfu Yuchen, removed her sunglasses, and cast a flirtatious glance at him.
Huangfu Yuchen curved his lips into a smile, and walked down the steps.
The beauty felt delighted, but she watched as Huangfu Yuchen's gaze didn't even flicker toward her car. Instead, he walked to the side of an SUV, reached out to touch the head that poked out from the car window, and pressed a kiss onto that person's forehead.
The beauty was surprised and sighed in disappointment. She could see clearly; it was a man inside the car! All the good men these days were already taken.
As Huangfu Yuchen got into the car, Yan Ge teased, "I haven't had lunch yet. Are we going to buy groceries now?"
"You haven't had lunch? Did the Yan Family say something unpleasant again?" Huangfu Yuchen frowned, pulled him into a hug, and kissed the corner of his smiling eyes. "Don't go there next time."
"Yeah," Yan Ge tilted his head up.
Huangfu Yuchen held his head, planting a thorough kiss before letting go. "Let's go buy groceries. Eggs, corn, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, and dried white fruits. I'll make you egg fried rice today. I'll prepare vegetarian dishes for you tomorrow, and meat dishes the day after."
"You can make egg fried rice?" Yan Ge looked at him skeptically. "You've only had half a day of class."
"Are you underestimating me?" Huangfu Yuchen's large palm landed on Yan Ge's thigh. "Drive."
Yan Ge started the car but couldn't help glance at him again. He imagined him wearing an apron and holding a spatula, and couldn't help but chuckle.
"What are you laughing at?" Huangfu Yuchen asked knowingly.
"Nothing, nothing," Yan Ge didn't dare to admit what he was daydreaming; it would be his loss if Huangfu Yuchen refused to cook.
They went to the supermarket and bought the necessary ingredients. Back home, Huangfu Yuchen carried the groceries to the kitchen.
Yan Ge brought over a chair and camera, sitting near the kitchen door.
Huangfu Yuchen turned to look at him with a meaningful smile, then calmly began the preparations. He cooked the rice, washed and sliced the tomatoes and cucumbers, and beat the eggs.
Yan Ge got so engrossed in watching him that he absentmindedly walked into the kitchen and forgot to take pictures. After twenty minutes, Huangfu Yuchen placed a fragrant plate of egg fried rice on the dining table.
Yan Ge looked at the delicious-looking egg fried rice and couldn't bear to eat it. Huangfu Yuchen used fresh red tomato slices and green cucumber slices to form a heart shape on the round plate. The egg fried rice was surrounded by the heart, adorned with golden eggs, emerald cucumber dices, orange corn, and red carrot dices as decoration. It was irresistible.
"Try it," Huangfu Yuchen handed him a spoon and watched as Yan Ge stared at the dish but hesitated to eat it. He smiled, scooped up a spoonful of egg fried rice, and held it to Yan Ge's mouth, "Open up."
Yan Ge obediently ate it, and his eyes lit up. He nodded repeatedly, "It's delicious! You should taste it too."
There was a grain of rice on his lips, and Huangfu Yuchen squinted his eyes. He pulled Yan Ge into his arms, pressed his lips and licked the rice, then used his tongue to pry Yan Ge's teeth open and enter his mouth.
After responding briefly, Yan Ge pushed him away, looking straight at the egg fried rice. "Let's eat first."
Huangfu Yuchen chuckled and let him go.
"You try it too, it really tastes great." Yan Ge fed him a spoonful.
Huangfu Yuchen nodded, "It's not bad, but I forgot to add green onions. It would've been even more flavorful."
Both of them ate the whole plate of egg fried rice together.
"We'll have this for dinner tonight." Yan Ge licked his lips, seeming unsatisfied.
"Alright." Huangfu Yuchen took the plate to the kitchen, then came back, bringing fruits with him. He sat down next to Yan Ge. "Baby, what are the arrangements for the afternoon?"
"I'm going to get your passport and driver's license after four o'clock." Yan Ge reclined on the sofa, picked up the remote from the coffee table, and turned on the TV. "How about going to a movie tonight?"
"Okay. How did you manage to get the driver's license and passport so quickly?" Huangfu Yuchen washed the fruits and brought them over, sitting down beside Yan Ge.
"Having connections makes things easier. Remember Xu Kai? I asked him to help." He rested his head on Huangfu Yuchen's thigh and said, "But you should practice driving more. We'll drive to the outskirts tomorrow after lunch. I know a place that's perfect for you to practice."
Huangfu Yuchen fed him grapes. "And have a field battle on the side."
Yan Ge's lips twitched. He shifted his gaze from the TV and asked, "Did you visit some messy website?"
Huangfu Yuchen calmly responded, "No. That was a slip of the tongue. I meant to say picnic. By the way, baby, what does 'field battle' mean?"
"Field battle… It's outdoor combat, a military term. Watch TV, watch TV." Yan Ge spoke seriously, fully engrossed in watching the television.
Huangfu Yuchen didn't expose him, secretly calculating what he should bring for their outing tomorrow. The Earth of the 21st century was a good place, offering everything one could need. He felt that he and his beloved could spend more time on Earth.
Yan Ge's proposed location for practicing driving was Fengshan, an undeveloped area outside the imperial capital with a forest at the foot of the mountain. This was the only place in the capital that remained undeveloped, hence it was rarely visited by people.
Huangfu Yuchen was driving, while Yan Ge provided guidance from the passenger seat. In less than an hour, Huangfu Yuchen had become a proficient driver, comparable to an experienced driver.
"Baby, I think we should prepare more gas. That way, we can use a car even if we travel through other time and space." Huangfu Yuchen said as he got out of the car.
"Sure. But the purchase of gas is limited, so we need to prepare in advance." Yan Ge opened the trunk and took out two bottles of mineral water, tossing one to Huangfu Yuchen. "Let's go behind the mountain and take a look. It should be cooler there."
"Alright." Huangfu Yuchen noticed some steps carved into the mountain and held Yan Ge's hand as they walked towards them.
The trees on the mountain were densely packed, casting large patches of shade that shielded them from the sun. The wind blew gently, providing a refreshing feeling without being too strong. The two of them strolled along, thoroughly enjoying this leisurely experience.
Behind them came the voices of young people chatting and laughing. Yan Ge recognized a voice and turned his head, only to see Yan Yan and several other young men and women walking towards them with excitement.
"Look ahead, two handsome guys!" Jie Yingying nudged Le Guan's arm, lowering her voice.
Le Guan looked at the two men and found herself captivated. The man on the left was tall with an upright posture, a cold expression, and a majestic demeanor. The man on the right also had a tall figure, a smile on his lips, handsome features, and was dressed in a well-tailored casual khaki outfit that made him look both elegant and relaxed.
Yan Yan followed their gazes and was taken aback. "Second Brother."
Yan Ge nodded. "Yan Yan, are they your friends?"
"Yes." Yan Yan's gaze shifted subtly to Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen's clasped hands. He wrinkled his brow slightly and quickly glanced at his friends.
Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen both noticed his subtle movement but didn't pay it much mind.
Yan Ge was about to say something when Jie Yingying walked up to Yan Yan and said coquettishly, "Yan Yan, do you know them? I
Why don't you introduce us?"
Yan Yan reluctantly introduced, "This is my Second Brother, Yan Ge, and that's his friend, Huangfu Yuchen."
"Xiao Ge, let's go. Don't interrupt the young people's playtime." Huangfu Yuchen spoke.
Yan Ge nodded and turned to Yan Yan. "Stay safe."
They turned and left.
Huang Jie exclaimed, "Look at their hands…"
The others suddenly realized and made strange sounds, "Ah." Then, they collectively turned their gaze towards Yan Yan.
"Does your Second Brother like guys?" Liu Chao looked at Yan Yan with a suggestive look, smiling meaningfully.
Yan Yan blushed with anger. He took a few steps forward and caught up with Yan Ge, yelling, "Yan Ge! Have you no shame? You don't even consider the impact outside!"
Huangfu Yuchen's eyes darkened and a glance like an ice shard shot towards Yan Yan.
Yan Yan shuddered, feeling a chill down his spine. He felt a bit wronged, and his eyes reddened. Unfortunately, no one seemed to buy into his act.
Yan Ge gave Huangfu Yuchen's hand a squeeze and smiled at Yan Yan. "What impact could a nobody like me have? Could I possibly bring about the end of the world? Just enjoy yourselves."
With that, he paid no further attention to Yan Yan and walked away with Huangfu Yuchen.
Seeing the two of them chatting and laughing, seemingly carefree, Yan Yan felt even more frustrated by their indifference to his scolding. His face turned bright red.
The short haired Nie Jingjing was the first to speak. "Actually, they match quite well."
Yan Yan was annoyed, but he couldn't say much to Nie Jingjing, a girl.
Le Guan sighed regretfully. "It's a pity that our fellow sisters have lost two choices."
Gan Tian nodded. "But our fellow brothers are in luck."
Yu Haolei, the most mature among them, patted Yan Yan's shoulder reassuringly. "Alright, don't mind it. Let's find a place to camp. Nightfall is approaching."
Yan Yan glanced towards the direction Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen had gone, then turned his head. "Let's go to the other side."
For the sake of his mood, the others had to follow him.
Yan Yan's low mood persisted for a while. Liu Chao punched him and subtly gestured towards the four beautiful women. In a low voice, he said, "Come on, buddy, today is a rare opportunity. Don't mess things up."
Yan Yan's tone dripped with disdain. "I just can't understand how a man can like another man. Disgusting! Whatever, I don't care."
"Both of you, hurry up!" Jie Yingying stood on a rock not far away, waving to urge them.
"We're coming!" Yan Yan and Liu Chao rushed forward.
By now, Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen had reached the mountaintop. It was cooler at the summit, and they even sensed a faint spiritual energy, which surprised them. When they first arrived on Earth, they found the spiritual energy here was sparse, especially in urban areas. The reason their spirit gathering formation didn't attract attention was partly due to the scarcity of spiritual energy.
"Perhaps there are spiritual objects in this mountain," Yan Ge speculated.
Huangfu Yuchen wasn't particularly interested. He saw a relatively flat grassy area ahead and suggested, "How about we have our picnic here, baby?"
"Alright." Yan Ge comfortably lay down, enjoying the gentle breeze.
Huangfu Yuchen patted his knee and said, "I'll go get the things."
If not for the presence of others on the mountain, they could have directly retrieved the necessary items from their spatial storage.
Huangfu Yuchen had descended the mountain when suddenly, the wind changed from hot to cold. Trees shook violently as the wind direction shifted from south to north, accompanied by a drop in temperature. The rustling of leaves sounded like a chorus of whispers, one wave higher than the next. Spiritual energy surged through the mountain at a rapid pace, moving towards the north.
"Cultivators?" Huangfu Yuchen's curiosity was piqued. Yan Ge had mentioned that this world had no cultivators, so where did these cultivators come from? And who were the opponents they were fighting?
The wind grew stronger, howling as it swept through the area, causing clouds to swirl and tumble rapidly in the sky.
Huangfu Yuchen casually carried the picnic equipment, his figure flashing as he instantly appeared near the battlefield. He saw that one side of the battle was dressed in camouflage uniforms. The other side had sharp facial features, a prominent nose, and hair that wasn't black. They were very much like the foreigners he had seen on TV.
In the center of the battlefield stood an elderly man who appeared to be around fifty years old, and a middle-aged man with brown hair. Behind the elderly man were four people in camouflage uniforms, all injured and pale. They had serious expressions as they watched the battle. Behind the middle-aged man stood four people, one woman and three men, looking smugly at the others in camouflage uniforms.
The elderly man was named Wang Zhiyuan, and his cultivation was at the early stage of Foundation Establishment. He had thought that with his abilities, he could surpass Bishop Chardock, but Bishop Chardock proved to be much more difficult to deal with than he had anticipated.
"Hahaha! Mr. Wang, surrender!" Bishop Chardock forced Wang Zhiyuan to retreat repeatedly, laughing arrogantly. "If you're willing to surrender, I can spare your life."
"Don't even think about it!" Wang Zhiyuan infused true qi into his fists, making them as solid as iron hammers. He aimed his fists at Bishop Chardock, and the excess true qi crackled like electricity.
Bishop Chardock's expression changed; he knew these fists were extraordinary and couldn't be taken lightly. A white light surged within him, and he shouted loudly as he used his palms to meet Wang Zhiyuan's fists head-on.
The two powerful forces collided fiercely, shooting into the sky and piercing through the rolling black clouds. With a deafening bang, heavy rain poured down, accompanied by fierce winds. Fengshan was engulfed in a sudden downpour, as if it were being struck by a typhoon.
On the other side of the mountain
On the other side of the mountain, Yan Yan and the group managed to take refuge in a tent just in time. However, the strong wind quickly flipped the tent over, and they rolled and tumbled down the hillside while screaming. Luckily, they were stopped by trees. Although they managed to escape, they were drenched by the heavy rain and everyone's mood was at its worst. They had managed to arrange dates with the girls they liked, hoping for a romantic night, but instead, they were faced with such terrible weather, leaving no room for romance.
"Is everyone here?" Yu Haolei sat on the ground, gripping tufts of grass in each hand to anchor himself. He surveyed his surroundings, "Where's Le Guan?"
Seeing that Le Guan was missing, Yan Yan's group became anxious and shouted loudly, "Le Guan! Le Guan!"
The rain drowned out their voices, and there was no response.
Gan Tian hugged a tree for support, her clothes soaked, her blue bra and panties visible due to the wet fabric and Liu Chao and Huang Jie couldn't help but glance at her.
couldn't hold back her tears and sobbed, "Wu… Sister Ying Ying, what should we do now? The wind is so strong, and the rain is pouring down so heavily. Where can we find Le Guan?"
Jie Yingying was wearing a white dress and was equally disheveled. "Everyone, don't panic. We can't scatter further. Should we go down the mountain and find help?"
"No, we can't leave Le Guan behind!" Yan Yan's expression changed. "What if she's in danger?"
Yu Haolei thought for a moment and shouted, "Yan Yan, isn't your second brother also on the mountain? Let's go find them first and ask for their help."
When Yan Ge saw Yan Yan approaching, his friends in disarray and shouting to each other, he frowned slightly.
Gan Tian's sharp eyes spotted him first. "Second Brother! Second Brother! We're here!"
Yan Yan looked at Yan Ge, who held an umbrella in one hand and a bundle of ropes in the other, walking towards them steadily. Yan Yan's mouth opened slightly but closed just as quickly.
Yan Ge glanced over and only saw seven people. He untied the ropes and tossed them down. "Hold onto the ropes and wait here. Yan Yan, come with me." His spiritual sense had already detected that Le Guan was nearby, lying motionless on the ground, having fainted.
"What do you want?" Yan Yan asked warily.
"To find your companion," Yan Ge replied impatiently, grabbing Yan Yan's arm and pulling him over to Le Guan's side.
"Le Guan!" Yan Yan hurriedly lifted her.
On the other side, Wang Zhiyuan received a fatal blow, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the ground as he was thrown away.
"Mr. Wang!" The four in camouflage rushed over anxiously, helping him up. "Mr. Wang, how are you?"
"Bishop Chardock, kill him quickly!" The beautiful woman with a "△" figure shouted in a charming voice, playing with a strand of wavy hair. Behind her smiling eyes hid cruelty and a desire to kill.
"Alright." Chardock smirked and agreed, gathering holy light in his right palm and thrusting it towards Wang Zhiyuan.
The milky white holy light resembled a pillar, flying towards Wang Zhiyuan at high speed.
The thin man who had been touching Wang Zhiyuan's right arm quickly changed his expression. Reacting the fastest, he positioned himself in front of Wang Zhiyuan, concentrating the little true qi left in his body on his chest. He was preparing for a strike that even Wang Zhiyuan might not be able to withstand.
"Move aside, Mingwei!" Wang Zhiyuan spit out another mouthful of blood from the effort of talking.
The pain Mingwei had been waiting for didn't come. Bewildered, he raised his eyes and saw an unfamiliar figure.
"Who are you?" Chardock's strength faltered, and he retracted his palm. He looked at Huangfu Yuchen with cold, vigilant eyes. The person who could withstand his strike wasn't simple. However, what was strange was that he couldn't sense any power from this person. The newcomer seemed like an ordinary person.
Wang Zhiyuan looked at Huangfu Yuchen in surprise and secretly let out a breath of relief. Although he wasn't sure of the newcomer's identity and why he had intervened, the most important thing now was to survive. As long as he survived, he had a chance to hold on to the treasure he had acquired.
"Are you all Chinese?" Huangfu Yuchen asked Wang Zhiyuan's group.
"Yes," Wang Zhiyuan's eyes were resolute, without hesitation.
"And are you foreigners?" Huangfu Yuchen turned his gaze to Chardock.
Chardock crossed his arms, his tone arrogant. "So what if we are?"
"No big deal." Huangfu Yuchen pointed to Wang Zhiyuan's group. "I prefer the clothes they're wearing. So, it would be best for you to leave. Otherwise, don't blame me for being impolite."
"Oh?" Chardock sneered, his aura growing colder. "I'm curious to see how impolite you can be."
With the support of Ruan Mingwei and He Hong, Wang Zhiyuan struggled to stand up. He discreetly observed Huangfu Yuchen, and his mood didn't ease, but rather grew heavier. When did China produce such a skilled expert? As one of the hidden elders of the Covert Operations Group, he hadn't received the slightest bit of news about this. The fact that this person had landed a hit on Chardock showed his high cultivation level. It was unclear whether he was friend or foe.
Ruan Mingwei, He Hong, Ji Chang, and Zhang Jian all thought about this, but seeing the arrogant Chardock defeated by Huangfu Yuchen, they felt a sense of gratification.
Chardock's fury surged, his holy light overflowing. The decorative fur on his collar bristled like an irritated rooster's feathers. Staring at Huangfu Yuchen, he shouted, "Alan, Barry, Daisy, Borg, attack together!"
"Yes!"
Without Chardock's order, Alan, Barry, Daisy, and Borg, moved to encircle Huangfu Yuchen along with him.
Huangfu Yuchen stood in a casual posture, his right hand still in his pocket. He caught a glimpse of Wang Zhiyuan's group not seizing the opportunity to escape and got a favorably impression towards them.
Chardock was secretly alarmed. This person was surrounded by five experts, yet he didn't even take a defensive stance. How confident was he? However, the dignity of a bishop didn't permit anyone to trample upon it. A confrontation was certain.
Chardock discreetly stepped back and thundered, "Capture him for me!"
Alan, Barry, and the others had no idea that their bishop was afraid of Huangfu Yuchen, and they had high fighting spirit. They charged towards Huangfu Yuchen as soon as they received the order.
Huangfu Yuchen didn't know how many cultivators were on Earth and wad unsure how many formidable individuals existed, so he didn't reveal his full strength. He feigned about seventy moves against Alan and the others before his palm technique suddenly turned sharp and deadly. His palms struck consecutively, injuring the four.
"You wait! It's not over yet! Let's go!" Chardock left a bitter threat and dashed off into the distance.
Alan and the others covered their injuries, glaring at Huangfu Yuchen in resentment before quickly following.
Huangfu Yuchen didn't pursue, turning his attention to Wang Zhiyuan.
Wang Zhiyuan clasped his hands together, expressing gratitude, "Thank you, senior, for lending a hand. If not for you, the treasure of our nation might have been snatched by those foreigners."
Though simple, these words were cleverly constructed. They implied to Huangfu Yuchen that they were working for the country and he shouldn't covet their possessions.
Huangfu Yuchen looked at him with a smile that wasn't quite a smile. "You're just in the late phase of the Foundation Establishment stage. Your possessions are hardly worth catching my eye. Besides, do you think that you and your companions could escape if I truly intended to seize them,?"
Ruan Mingwei and his group's expressions grew serious.
Wang Zhiyuan didn't mind and spoke politely, "It seems I've thought ill of my superior with my poor mindset. It's our fortune to meet you, senior. I'm Wang Zhiyuan. May I know how to address you, senior?"
"Huangfu Yuchen," Huangfu Yuchen replied. "Let me ask you, do you know the highest cultivation level in Huaxia?"
Wang Zhiyuan contemplated for a moment. Could this senior have been in seclusion for quite a while? But he understood that honesty was the best policy. As things stood, this person didn't seem hostile and fabricating lies could potentially create a future adversary. So he answered honestly, "It's the late stages of the Divine Transformation Stage."
After he finished, Wang Zhiyuan cautiously inquired, "May I ask, what level is senior at now?"
Huangfu Yuchen didn't reply immediately. He swept his spiritual sense over Wang Zhiyuan's body from top to bottom and casually commented, "You once nearly fell into demonic possession due to hastiness during the Initial Foundation Establishment stage. Since then, your progress has been even slower."
Wang Zhiyuan was startled and smiled wryly. "Senior has keen insight."
Without saying another word, Huangfu Yuchen suddenly slapped Wang Zhiyuan on the back.
"Old Wang!" Ruan Mingwei and the others rushed over in alarm.
"Don't come closer!" Wang Zhiyuan sternly stopped them. He had an intuition that Huangfu Yuchen had no malicious intent. If he did, there was no need for saying all those things.
Ruan Mingwei glances with the others and stood a few steps away.
Huangfu Yuchen glanced at them, then sent some true qi into Wang Zhiyuan's body, gently repairing and widening his damaged meridians.
Wang Zhiyuan was delighted. He immediately calmed his mind and regulated his breath. After a while, he entered a meditative state.
Ruan Mingwei and the others were elated. As cultivators, they understood the significance of meditation. Even if their cultivation level didn't increase, their realm would become more stable. They stood quietly to the side, watching Huangfu Yuchen gratefully.
About half an hour later, the aura around Wang Zhiyuan suddenly changed. However, Ruan Mingwei and the others at the Initial Foundation Establishment stage weren't prepared and were nearly forced to kneel under his pressure.
Wang Zhiyuan quickly restrained his aura. He respectfully bowed to Huangfu Yuchen, "Thank you, senior. I've now reached the Mid-Foundation Establishment stage."
Huangfu Yuchen waved his hand. "Your talents are decent, but unfortunately, the spiritual energy is thin here. Your potential for advancement is limited."
"Yes," Wang Zhiyuan sighed. "Earth has suffered severe destruction. Many places with spiritual energy have been obliterated."
Ruan Mingwei and the others exchanged hopeful glances. They simultaneously thought, if this expert was willing to help them… However, they understood the importance of restraint. They didn't want to take advantage of Huangfu Yuchen's goodwill. They thanked him in unison, "Thank you, senior, for helping Old Wang."
Huangfu Yuchen considered this meeting to be fate. He took out five Foundation Establishment Pills from his storage ring. "Foundation Establishment Pills are usually taken at the beginning of cultivation, but it's not too late to take them now. They can expand your meridians and aid in absorbing spiritual energy. However, these pills were my experimental works, and I accidentally added a trace of Lotus Grass. You decide whether to take them or not."
Ruan Mingwei and the others looked delighted. "Thank you, senior!" Lotus Grass could cause some mild diarrhea, but it wouldn't have any other negative effects. Compared to the benefits of increased cultivation, this was nothing.
They glanced at Wang Zhiyuan. The Covert Operations Group consisted not only of the five of them but others as well. Typically, when receiving cultivation resources, the higher cultivators used them first. Even if these Foundation Establishment Pills ended up in their hands, they might not keep them for themselves.
Wang Zhiyuan said, "Since senior has given them to you, they belong to you."
"Thank you, Old Wang!"
Wang Zhiyuan continued, "Senior Huangfu—"
Huangfu Yuchen interrupted him, "Just call me Mr. Huangfu."
"Very well, Mr. Huangfu. You must have left seclusion recently, right?" Wang Zhiyuan took out a business card, "This is my contact information. Mr. Huangfu, you've saved my life and provided guidance. In the future, if you have any instructions, I'll do my best, as long as it's within my capabilities."
Huangfu Yuchen directly handed his phone to Wang Zhiyuan, "Add your contacts."
The added their numbers and Huangfu Yuchen was satisfied to see a few more entries in his "Contacts."
"Yuchen," Yan Ge approached lightly. His spiritual sense had already seen the situation here, so he didn't conceal the fact that he also possessed cultivation.
Wang Zhiyuan's pupils contracted; yet another high-level cultivator whose cultivation was difficult to discern!
"Baby," Huangfu Yuchen embraced him by the waist, handing over his phone, "Look at my contacts list."
Yan Ge glanced at it and held back a smile. "Not bad." Yuchen was a classic phone enthusiast. When he had arrived on Earth, his contacts list had only contained "Baby," which felt awkward no matter how one looked at it. He stored numbers for checking his phone balance, ordering takeout, and even the newspaper office's number. Later, with the addition of Xu Kai and others, he had around ten contacts. Now, thankfully, the contacts list finally had a few more respectable entries.
"I wonder who this senior is?" Wang Zhiyuan politely asked.
Yan Ge nodded at him. "You can just call me Yan Ge."
Naturally, Wang Zhiyuan couldn't address him so informally. "So it's Mr. Yan, nice to meet you."
Huangfu Yuchen: "Alright, we won't keep you any longer. We should be on our way too. Rest assured, Old Wang, even if I need to trouble you in the future, it won't involve your secrets."
Wang Zhiyuan was about to respond, but he found that the two before him had vanished, leaving him both astonished and envious.
"Old Wang?" Ruan Mingwei walked up to his side.
Wang Zhiyuan snapped back to reality. "Let's go back."
Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen appeared at the mountaintop.
"Is everything settled over there?" Huangfu Yuchen didn't even want to mention words like "Yan Yan" or "your brother."
Yan Ge said, "They're right ahead. They seemed frightened and insisted I accompany them down the mountain. I was worried about you, so I came to find you first."
The rain had stopped long ago, the wind had subsided, but the sky remained gloomy. Huangfu Yuchen frowned. "Let's just make sure they reach the bottom of the mountain."
Yan Ge nodded indifferently. There was only the path to go down the mountain anyway.
Yan Yan and the others sat on the rocky slope halfway up the mountain, each of them soaked, tired, and hungry. They had been drenched by the rain, their minds were hazy, and being deep within the mountains, they couldn't differentiate directions. Otherwise, they would have already descended on their own. When they saw Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen, their eyes lit up.
"Keep up with us," Yan Ge walked past them without stopping, leaving only these words behind. He and Huangfu Yuchen walked further, side by side.
The group didn't have the energy to say much, silently following behind.
They felt that Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen were insensitive, but fearing to provoke them, they reluctantly refrained from making any comments and kept silent.
Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, Yan Ge escorted them to where they had parked their car. After lending them his phone to inform their families, he and Huangfu Yuchen left in their vehicle.
In Yan Jiaqiang's study, an eerie quietness pervaded the air.
Yan Jiaqiang looked at Yan Weifeng, his expression grim, "Did he really say that?"
"Yes." Yan Weifeng ran his fingers through his hair, eyes cast down in contemplation. "Dad, in my opinion, it's better not to antagonize Yan Ge."
Yan Jiaqiang's face remained stern, his voice rising, "Not antagonize him? Am I the one causing the conflict? He's the one who doesn't respect me as his father! Should I, his own father, go begging for reconciliation?"
"Dad," Yan Weifeng finally asked, "Why don't you and Mom like Yan Ge?"
Yan Jiaqiang frowned, seemingly unable to comprehend why he was being asked this. "Like or dislike? He's my son too, and I've raised him. What more do you want?"
Yan Weifeng fell silent. He wasn't the head of the family yet and many things, even with differing opinions, were hard to act upon. The decline of the Yan family's business was becoming evident, and although a marriage alliance seemed like a good solution, Yan Ge's strong-willed nature made him an unlikely candidate. Not to mention the presence of Huangfu Yuchen by his side, who was currently unfathomable.
"What's your plan now?" Yan Jiaqiang asked dismissively. "Since he can say such things, I'll consider him as if he's not my son anymore. As for the marriage alliance, Yan Yan will do. He's nineteen and suitable for Zou Tingran, Zou's eldest daughter."
Yan Weifeng was taken aback. Yan Yan? Their father had always doted on Yan Yan. While Yan Yan's influence had waned somewhat as he grew older, it was surprising that his father would suggest such a marriage. Especially considering that Yan Yan was recently close to a female classmate, there was no way he would agree to a marriage.
At that moment, cries and the clicking of high heels echoed from outside the room.
Shortly after, the study door was pushed open, hitting the wall with a resounding "thud."
Du Rulan entered, her face cold as she exclaimed sharply, "Jiaqiang, go see what trouble Yan Ge has caused! Look at the state Yan Yan is in!"
"What's all this noise?" Yan Jiaqiang's brows furrowed. "Look at you, what's the difference between you and those quarrelsome women outside?"
Du Rulan was momentarily stunned. She looked at herself, then her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at Yan Jiaqiang. "You, you actually called me a quarrelsome woman?"
Yan Weifeng intervened, "Mom, what's wrong with Yan Yan?"
Thinking about Yan Yan and fueled by anger, Du Rulan momentarily forgot about her argument with Yan Jiaqiang. "He went camping with classmates in Fengshan and they encountered Yan Ge and a certain Huangfu. There was a sudden rainstorm in Fengshan, and Yan Ge didn't even bother to protect Yan Yan. Yan Yan got drenched like a chicken, and now he's coming down with a cold."
"What's the big deal about a cold? Just call a doctor over," Yan Jiaqiang grew increasingly displeased with Du Rulan. "How many times have I told you to knock before coming into the study? Don't you know that Weifeng and I were discussing important matters?"
Du Rulan felt somewhat guilty. With many servants in the house, there was a rule to knock before entering the study to prevent passing servants from hearing discussions. She pursed her lips and said gently, "Fine, it's my fault. What important matters were you discussing?"
Yan Jiaqiang retrieved a document from the drawer and replied impatiently, "Let's talk about it later. As for the marriage alliance, let Yan Yan marry Zou Tingran's daughter."
"What?" Du Rulan's eyes widened. "Husband, are you suggesting Yan Yan enters a marriage alliance? Can't he find someone he likes for himself? Besides, you know how stubborn Yan Yan is. He won't agree to a marriage."
Yan Weifeng suddenly realized why Yan Ge felt that his parents didn't treat him like their own. His father said to consider Yan Ge as if he doesn't exist, and his mother seemed completely unfazed. He couldn't help but doubt whether Yan Ge was truly their biological child. However, he was three years older than Yan Ge, and he vaguely remembered Yan Ge's birth. There was no doubt that Yan Ge was their natural child.
"He won't agree? Then let the Yan company continue to decline," Yan Jiaqiang retorted, glaring at Du Rulan.
Du Rulan mumbled, "Is it impossible for Yan Ge to marry? He's still a son of the Yan family, and he's around the same age as Zou's eldest daughter. He's the most suitable match. Yan Yan is still young."
"That's fine too, as long as you can convince him," Yan Jiaqiang replied without looking up.
Du Rulan sensed something amiss in her husband's demeanor. "Honey, are you in a bad mood today? Why are you so irritable?
Yan Weifeng stood up, "Mom, Dad, you should talk things over. I'll go check on Xiao Si."
…
Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen had no idea that a storm was brewing within the Yan family. Even if they did, they wouldn't care. They were driving to the supermarket and were planning on going on a road trip to S Province. Their overall plan was to visit domestic attractions before heading abroad.
People in the supermarket noticed two handsome guys walking in, both wearing identical short-sleeved T-shirts. One of them had his arm around the other's shoulder, and their presence was enough to cause whispers and even low-key speculation about them being celebrities.
Huangfu Yuchen removed his sunglasses from the bridge of his nose and casually pushed two shopping carts. "Baby, let's split up. I'll get the food, and you can handle the rest."
"OK." Yan Ge grabbed two bottles of mineral water as he passed by the drinks section.
Huangfu Yuchen guided his cart to the food section.
Yan Ge recalled that the tissues in the car were running out, so he picked up a box. After a moment of thought, he took two more boxes and continued searching for other necessities, including some seasonings.
Huangfu Yuchen added a pack of Kang Da Fu spicy beef noodles to his cart, followed by a pack of mushroom stewed chicken noodles. His phone rang, and he pulled it out of his pocket to glance at it. The caller ID said "Ji Chang."
"Yes?" Huangfu Yuchen answered the call, placing another pack of Laotan pickled cabbage beef noodles into the cart.
"Greetings Mr. Huangfu. It's been a week since we last met. I'm calling on behalf of Mr. Wang, Mr. Ruan Mingwei, Mr. He Hong, and Mr. Zhang Jian, just to check in."
"I appreciate it." Huangfu Yuchen replied nonchalantly. "Is Mr. Wang recovering?"
Ji Chang sounded somewhat excited. While Huangfu Yuchen appeared cold and indifferent, he was actively concerned about Mr. Wang. "Yes, thanks to your care, Mr. Wang is doing better. But that's not the main reason I'm calling. There's an inter-monastery exchange next Wednesday. Are you and Mr. Yan interested?"
"Time and address," Huangfu Yuchen said. "If Xiao Ge and I are free, we'll consider going."
Ji Chang provided the details and then asked, "Where should we deliver the invitation letter?"
"Let's talk about it when the time comes." Huangfu Yuchen inadvertently caught a glimpse of a familiar figure darting behind a shelf.
Standing next to the food shelves was a man wearing sunglasses, holding a cute boy of around four or five in his arms. He was unmistakably Yan Jiaqiang. On his right arm was a woman's handbag hanging.
Beside him stood a woman in her mid-twenties. She was young and beautiful, and had a smile on her face. She whispered something to the young boy, who then turned his head and planted a kiss on Yan Jiaqiang's cheek.
Yan Jiaqiang was grinning ear to ear, and even his well-maintained face displayed a few lines of wrinkles.
Sensing a sharp gaze on him, Yan Jiaqiang alertly raised his head and locked eyes with Huangfu Yuchen.
Huangfu Yuchen had no intention of hiding his presence. He courteously smiled at Yan Jiaqiang.
Yan Jiaqiang had a bad feeling and passed the little boy in his arms to the woman beside him. He gave her some instructions before walking over to Huangfu Yuchen. He rapidly calculated how he could hide his infidelity and the fact that he had a mistress. Yan Jiaqiang had knowledge of the Imperial Capital; the Yan family never came to this side. Unexpectedly, he ran into Huangfu Yuchen here.
He looked around, and sure enough, he spotted Yan Ge in the fruit section, choosing fruits with his back to him.
"Mr. Yan, what a coincidence." Huangfu Yuchen opened with a smile. "The adorable little boy looks a lot like you. He's about the same age as Xiao Ge's nephew, right?"
One sentence shattered Yan Jiaqiang's fantasies. He had no choice but to speak, "Let's be frank, Mr. Huangfu. As long as you don't divulge this matter, I promise not to interfere with you and Yan Ge."
Huangfu Yuchen's gaze turned cold. He said coolly, "I won't keep any secrets from Xiao Ge."
Yan Jiaqiang fell silent for a moment, then continued, "As long as you don't tell anyone else except Yan Ge, I won't oppose your relationship with him."
Huangfu Yuchen's eyes flashed with a cold light, and he neither confirmed nor denied it, saying indifferently, "Do you think you have the ability to meddle in my relationship with Xiao Ge?"
Yan Jiaqiang locked eyes with him, and was unable to retort.
Huangfu Yuchen's lips curled into a smile, and the cold aura around him dissipated. "Rest assured, I currently have no interest in meddling in others' affairs."
With that, he returned to the instant noodles section and continued selecting his items.
Yan Jiaqiang also turned and left with a frown on his face.
Yan Ge pushed the shopping cart over, "Yuchen, are you done?"
"Almost." Huangfu Yuchen put a pack of braised beef noodles into the cart.
Thinking about Yuchen's preferences, Yan Ge had a shiver and quickly glanced into his cart. Almost everything he saw was "Kang Da Fu" and he was bewildered, "Just how much do you love instant noodles?"
"Definitely second to you." Huangfu Yuchen turned his head and kissed his cheek.
Yan Ge sighed helplessly. If it wasn't for both of them cultivating, he definitely wouldn't allow Yuchen to eat so much junk food.
Huangfu Yuchen swept his gaze across the shelves, making sure not to miss any flavor before hugging Yan Ge and moving forward, "Baby, I have some bad news for you. Prepare yourself."
"Is it related to the two of us?" Yan Ge asked.
Huangfu Yuchen thought for a moment, "Probably not."
Yan Ge remained composed, "Go ahead."
Huangfu Yuchen didn't speak, he just pointed ahead.
The first person Yan Ge saw was Yan Jiaqiang. For a moment, he didn't understand what Huangfu Yuchen was trying to convey. Then he noticed the little boy beside Yan Jiaqiang, cheerfully hugging his leg. His gaze shifted, and he spotted a young woman not too far away. It suddenly dawned on him.
He calmly said, "Indeed, it has nothing to do with us. Let's go."
"Let's go and pay." Huangfu Yuchen hugged Yan Ge's shoulder and walked to the checkout counter. He casually picked something up from the shelf beside the cashier and threw it into the cart.
Yan Ge didn't avert his gaze, instead, he added a package of a different color.
Seeing the variety of instant noodles in the cart, the cashier looked at Huangfu Yuchen strangely.
Yan Ge quickly turned his head, and looked at an advertisement on the wall. He had a look of wanting to avoid trouble, as if he wanted to say—I don't know this person.
Huangfu Yuchen deliberately called out, "Xiao Ge, come help me for a moment. I need an extra pair of hands."
Yan Ge walked back helplessly, "Of course you need an extra pair of hands, you bought more than ten packets of instant noodles!"
Huangfu Yuchen advised, "We're not short on money."
Yan Ge was exasperated, "Is this about money?"
The people in line behind them were all amused.
Yan Ge quickened his pace, escaping from the supermarket as if he were fleeing.
Huangfu Yuchen hurried to catch up, a wider smile on his face. He enjoyed this feeling a lot. He and his beloved were living just like an ordinary couple.
At the parking lot, they coincidentally bumped into Yan Jiaqiang and his group head-on.
Yan Jiaqiang stiffened, his hand still on the car door.
Yan Ge's expression remained unchanged; he nodded at Yan Jiaqiang and opened the car door.
They placed their items in the back seat, got in the car, started the engine, and drove away.
Yan Jiaqiang entered his home and saw Du Rulan sitting in the living room, absentmindedly flipping through TV channels and occasionally glancing at the door. It was obvious that she was waiting for him.
He felt a pang of apprehension. Could it be that Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen had told Du Rulan about the situation? To be honest, causing such a scandal at his age was quite embarrassing, especially since his illegitimate son was practically the same age as his grandson, Xiao Si. But over the years, Du Rulan had shown signs of aging, growing increasingly ordinary. She was nothing like Yin Huiru, who was young, beautiful, and understanding.
Yan Jiaqiang understood that if this matter were exposed, his reputation would undoubtedly be tarnished. Yet, he couldn't bring himself to give up Yin Huiru. His youngest son, Yan Lu, was even cuter than his other three sons.
"Husband, you're back." Du Rulan's eyes showed a smile as she walked up, quickly taking the briefcase from Yan Jiaqiang's hand.
Yan Jiaqiang felt relieved. "Why aren't you asleep so late?" His expression was quite composed. He always bought his clothes in pairs, even making sure he had replacements at Yin Huiru's place in case they got stained. This was one of the reasons why he and Yin Huiru had managed to keep their affair hidden for the five years they'd been together.
"It's all because of your youngest son. He threw a tantrum earlier. You've spoiled him too much," Du Rulan said playfully, giving Yan Jiaqiang a teasing look. Unfortunately, due to her age, this gesture didn't carry the same charm and cuteness as it used to.
"What's wrong with Yan Yan?" Yan Jiaqiang found this awkward and irritating. If this were happening at Yin Huiru's place, they would have coaxed Yan Lu to sleep and then chatted about some lighthearted topics or engaged in activities they both enjoyed. Yin Huiru would never complain about this and that in front of him.
Du Rulan helped him loosen his tie and she instructed the maid to prepare a bath. She sighed, "I tentatively mentioned the idea of arranging a marriage between him and the Zou family's youngest daughter. He immediately changed his expression. He was even smashing things in his room earlier. Husband, I think we should drop this matter. Let Yan Ge handle the arranged marriage. As for how to convince him, I'll find a way. I refuse to believe that I, as his mother, can't control him anymore."
"No!" Yan Jiaqiang opposed immediately.
Du Rulan was taken aback, thinking she had misheard, "Husband, what did you just say?"
Yan Jiaqiang softened his tone, sat down on the sofa, and said, "Didn't Weifeng tell you? He had people investigate the man around Yan Ge, but they found nothing. The man's identity must be extraordinary. Our Yan family is at a critical moment right now so I think it's better not to provoke them. Otherwise, even if the arranged marriage with the Zou family goes well, it might not save the Yan family."
Du Rulan sat next to him and held his arm, disagreeing, "Our Yan family has a history of several hundred years in the capital. Are we afraid of some man who suddenly appeared out of nowhere? I've had someone inquire, and I've never heard of a powerful Huangfu family. Besides, Yan Yan is our most beloved son. Are you not concerned about making him marry someone he doesn't like?"
"I said no, so it's a no!" Yan Jiaqiang retorted, pulling away his arm and looking stern, "Don't privately contact Yan Ge. I can't risk the Yan family. Besides, feelings can be nurtured. The Zou family's youngest daughter is quite good-looking, and her temperament is pleasant. She'll definitely get along with Yan Yan. The matter is settled. I'm going to take a shower."
After saying that, he stood up and went upstairs.
Du Rulan stared at his back in a daze, suddenly feeling that he was a stranger. This version of Yan Jiaqiang was strange. Yan Yan was their most cherished child and they had pampered him since he was young. Even when Yan Yan was occasionally willful and she reprimanded him, Yan Jiaqiang would rush to stand up for him, afraid that even a finger lifted against him might cause a storm. Once, they joked that when Yan Yan got married, he probably wouldn't be as close to them, but rather to his wife and Yan Jiaqiang said, "That's fine too. As long as our precious son is happy."
But now, Yan Jiaqiang was rigidly setting up an arranged marriage for Yan Yan, regardless of her objections and Yan Yan's feelings. It was as if he had completely changed!
Once suspicion crept in, Du Rulan couldn't help but notice more odd behaviors from Yan Jiaqiang recently. Leaving aside his attitude towards her, he suddenly seemed to care very little about Yan Yan. Could he be under some kind of influence?
Her immediate thought was to seek help from Master Xuyan.
Master Xuyan was the abbot of Mo'an Temple and a highly accomplished monk. When Yan Ge was born, Master Xuyan had told her and Yan Jiaqiang that this child would have a certain impact on the fortunes of the Yan family's business. The only solution was for neither she nor Yan Jiaqiang to get close to him; they were only to provide for his basic needs. Additionally, when he reached the age of twenty-five, he would face a great calamity. Initially, both she and Yan Jiaqiang hadn't believed it. However, on the third day after Yan Ge was born, the Yan family had nearly become embroiled in a massive tax evasion scandal. That's when they started to believe and since then, they had treated Yan Ge as an adopted child, focusing only on his basic needs and rarely showing concern. As predicted, when Yan Ge turned twenty-five, he had a health crisis and disappeared without a trace. Both she and Yan Jiaqiang had thought he had died. Now Yan Ge had suddenly reappeared, coinciding with a crisis in the Yan family. Du Rulan had even greater respect for Master Xuyan.
So, at the slightest doubt, she immediately thought of seeking guidance from him.
Back in the bedroom, Yan Jiaqiang finished his shower and was lying in bed, flipping through a magazine.
Du Rulan also went to take a shower. When she emerged, Yan Jiaqiang had already turned his back to her and fallen asleep.
She opened her mouth, but said nothing. She got onto the bed and lay down quietly.
…
After breakfast, Du Rulan watched Yan Jiaqiang's car drive away. She deliberately changed into a simple outfit and switched from high heels to flats. Carrying a slightly bulging handbag, she instructed the driver to take her to Mo'an Temple.
Mo'an Temple was one of the four major ancient temples in the capital, known for its flourishing incense. One of the reasons was its abbot, Master Xuyan.
Master Xuyan was said to be over a hundred years old, and was known for his generosity and adeptness in divination. He was highly regarded in the capital, and even a provincial governor had come to him for advice. However, Master Xuyan had a strict rule: divination was a matter of revealing heavenly secrets, so he only performed three divinations per month. Making an appointment to see him required booking several years in advance.
But Du Rulan wasn't worried. The first time they met, Master Xuyan had actively sought them out, saying that they had a connection. So, while others had to wait in line, she didn't need to, although she still had to offer incense money.
Inside Mo'an Temple, Master Xuyan was in his meditation room, sitting on a cushion, fixated on an ancient bronze triangular mirror on a small table before him. A faint smile played on his lips as his gaze left the mirror and turned towards the closed door.
The sound of approaching footsteps reached his ears, and after a while, the door was knocked on. A young voice came from the other side.
"Master, Madam Yan is here."
Master Xuyan's eyes gleamed for a moment, and he responded calmly, "Which Madam Yan? I've already said that I shouldn't be disturbed."
The young monk replied, "It's Mrs. Du Rulan."
"Ah, it's Mrs. Du. We have a connection with the Yan family. Please let her in."
"Understood."
Du Rulan waited in the corridor outside, feeling somewhat nervous. Although Master Xuyan had said that there was a connection between him and the Yan family, this was already her third time coming to disturb him. Master Xuyan was a highly accomplished monk; she wasn't sure if he'd be willing to meet with her again. As the young monk approached her, she was still worried.
However, once the young monk said that Master Xuyan was inviting her in, she let out a sigh of relief. Her eyes behind the sunglasses noticed the jealous and envious gazes from people nearby who also wanted to meet the Master, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. She adjusted her posture, her waist straightened, and her lips curved into a subtle smile.
On entering the meditation room, Du Rulan became extremely respectful. She bowed slightly toward the center of the room, and then mirrored Master Xuyan's pose as he sat cross-legged with a prayer bead in hand. "Greetings, Master. Du Rulan has come to disturb you again."
"Namo Amituofo. Mrs. Du doesn't need to be overly courteous. Please have a seat," Master Xuyan said, closing his eyes briefly before reopening them.
"Thank you, Master." Du Rulan expressed her gratitude and took a seat beside him.
With a gentle smile, Master Xuyan spoke in a calm and assured tone, "Mrs. Du seems to be troubled."
Du Rulan sighed, "To be honest with the Master, I've come this time because of my husband."
"Oh?" Master Xuyan responded, "Mrs. Du, please feel free to share."
Du Rulan had great trust in Master Xuyan and wasn't concerned about him spreading the Yan family's affairs. She proceeded to describe the recent events, "It's like this: a few days ago, my second son, Yan Ge, returned… My husband has changed completely. He agreed to arrange a marriage for Yan Yan! You must know that he used to dote on Yan Yan the most."
Master Xuyan's tone was contemplative, "As expected."
Du Rulan was surprised, "I wonder what Master means by this?"
Master Xuyan didn't reply directly but closed his eyes, calculating briefly before opening them again. "This matter is still connected to the Second Young Master."
Du Rulan's lips tightened, and she asked nervously, "Master, what should I do now?"
Master Xuyan remained silent.
Du Rulan became increasingly anxious. "Master, please, you must help me. Can it be that Yan Ge's fate is so inflexible? Not only is he going to harm our Yan family's legacy, but he's also going to harm his own biological father?" Seeing Master Xuyan's continued silence, she grew alarmed. "Master? You can't possibly mean…he is my biological son, after all…"
Master Xuyan shook his head, "Where did Madam Du's thoughts wander? How could I, a monk, be involved in such matters?"
"What should we do then? Please guide us, Master," Du Rulan said, "Should my husband and I continue to keep our distance from him, as we did before?"
Master Xuyan shook his head again, "The second young master's malevolent energy has grown stronger. Even if you keep your distance, it might not have a significant effect. Here's what you can do: I have a spiritual jade here. Madam Du can give it to Second Young Master Yan. It will help suppress the malevolent energy."
He extended his hand, and in his palm lay a white oval-shaped jade that had been intricately carved. While white jade was common, this one had five small, round, pure black dots on it, each the size of a fingernail. If these five dots were connected with lines, they formed a pentagon, which was very strange.
"Thank you, Master!" Du Rulan expressed her gratitude and extended her hands, carefully taking the spiritual jade. She vaguely saw a silver thread flash across each of the five black dots, but when she looked again, there was nothing. She dismissed it, thinking it was a reflection from the outside light.
As they parted, Du Rulan inadvertently forgot her handbag.
Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen had finished sightseeing and trying local snacks in Province S, and then went to try the meat-filled buns. The pork filling in the buns was a rich, soft, succulent, and flavorful shade of red. Both of them agreed that it was worth the visit, a d they ended up eating three in a row, completely disregarding their image.
The owner of the meat bun shop was a young woman. She found Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen's demeanor quite attractive. Even eating a meat bun seemed different with them – taking small, deliberate bites while engaging in hushed conversations, it had an alternative kind of elegance, like a living advertisement. She held her phone sneakily, wanting to take a photo, but was afraid of being noticed.
By the time she gathered the courage, both of them had finished their meat buns and were at the counter, saying they wanted to buy forty more to take away.
Huangfu Yuchen had already noticed that many girls in the queue were pretending to turn around but were actually sneaking glances at Yan Ge. His face turned cold, and he casually lifted his arm, seemingly unintentionally placing it around Yan Ge's shoulder. He knew that some of the attention was directed at him too.
Yan Ge turned his head, raised his left hand, and extended his index finger to cover Huangfu Yuchen's eyes, signaling him not to look. At the same time, he glanced sideways, implying that he shouldn't pay attention to it.
Huangfu Yuchen's lips curled slightly and the sourness in his heart dissipated a bit. He pinched Yan Ge's ear as his hand rested on his shoulder.
Their interaction successfully diverted most of the onlookers' attention. However, a few girls seemed even more excited and thrilled, leaving others baffled.
After buying the meat buns, the two of them headed to the parking lot.
—'Horseshoes point south, people look north, gazing at green grass and rising yellow dust…'
Yan Ge pulled out his phone from his pocket. The caller ID said—"Mom."
Huangfu Yuchen glanced at the screen and opened the car door, indicating for Yan Ge to take the passenger seat.
Yan Ge answered the call.
"Come home for dinner tonight."
Huangfu Yuchen was helping Yan Ge fasten his seatbelt when he heard Du Rulan's casual, commanding tone through the phone and his eyes darkened.
Yan Ge said, "I'm out of town."
"Out of town?" Du Rulan frowned and looked at the spiritual jade in her hand. She was about to urge Yan Ge to come back today, but worried that he might become guarded. So she softened her voice, sounding gentle, "Are you on a trip? Take care and come back safely. When will you be back?"
The unusually gentle tone made Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen raise their eyebrows simultaneously.
"Next Tuesday," Yan Ge said.
Du Rulan, "Okay, come over next Tuesday evening for dinner, okay? Do you have time?"
"Come over," not "come back." Yan Ge's heart lacked any fluctuations with her attitude. "Alright."
The call ended with Du Rulan's clearly relieved tone, "Alright, I won't affect your fun."
As soon as Yan Ge hung up, Huangfu Yuchen decided, "I'll go with you then." He wanted to see what the Yans were up to.
Yan Ge chuckled, "Don't be so tense. Do you think they could harm me?"
Huangfu Yuchen ruffled Yan Ge's hair. Yan Ge had suffered this treatment for over twenty years. But now, he had him, and he wouldn't allow anyone to hurt him.
"Let's go," Huangfu Yuchen started the car.
The two of them enjoyed their trip until Tuesday morning before driving back to the capital. With their profound cultivation, they didn't feel tired, so they took a shower together upon their return.
Yan Ge's slender yet strong figure fascinated Huangfu Yuchen. Under the pretense of helping to wash his back, Huangfu Yuchen pulled him into an embrace. As they rubbed against each other, they ended up hugging tightly….
Seeing that it was still early, they slept for a while before getting up, getting ready, and heading to the Yan residence.
Everyone from the Yan family was present.
Due to traffic, Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen were about fifteen minutes late. Surprisingly, Du Rulan greeted them with a warm smile, showing no signs of displeasure. When she saw Huangfu Yuchen, there was no hint of unhappiness on her face either.
Yan Jianqiang was also calm, as if the incident at the supermarket had never occurred.
"Second Brother, Mr. Huangfu, come and sit," Yan Weifeng invited.
Only Yan Yan still seemed to dislike Yan Ge, giving him several resentful glances.
Yan Si approached Yan Ge with familiarity, smiling as he called out "Second Uncle", and then hugged his leg. He glanced curiously at Huangfu Yuchen but didn't show any fear, tilting his head back to observe him.
Yan Ge smiled and ruffled his hair, exchanging an affectionate glance with him before patting his head.
"Mr. Yan, Mrs. Yan, sorry to bother you. This is a small gift as a token of respect," Huangfu Yuchen spoke up, presenting the gift boxes on the coffee table. Even though the Yan family hadn't treated Yan Ge well, they couldn't afford to be discourteous and risk being looked down upon.
Yan Jiaqiang said, "You're considerate. Please sit. You're our guest."
After a smooth meal, everyone moved to the living room.
Du Rulan retrieved several gift boxes from under the tea table. Yan Ge glanced at them and counted five in total.
Du Rulan took the top one and handed it to Yan Ge. "This is a blessed jade that I had consecrated at the temple. Each of you children will have one to carry with them. While it may not necessarily be effective, it's for peace of mind."
Yan Yan moved closer with curiosity, "Mom, which one is mine?"
"Here." Du Rulan smiled and gave one to Yan Yan. She distributed the other three to Yan Weifeng, Zhang Qiaoqiao, and Yan Si.
Yan Yan immediately opened the box, liking the gift. This jade was valuable, at least twenty to thirty thousand. His mother was quite generous. However, he soon pouted. Since it was a collective gift, Yan Ge's surely couldn't be worse.
With a mischievous smile, Yan Yan looked at Yan Ge and extended his hand to snatch the box from him. "Second Brother, let me admire your peace jade."
Yan Ge chuckled lightly, "Of course." He had intentionally let Yan Yan snatch it. Otherwise, with his abilities, how could Yan Yan possibly take something from his hands?
Huangfu Yuchen noticed a flicker of unease in Du Rulan's eyes. It seemed she was nervous. He became cautious and looked at the gift box in Yan Yan's hand. 'Could there be something unusual about the jade inside?'
Yan Yan opened the box, and his eyes lit up. He took the jade from the box, looking reluctant to put it down. "What a beautiful jade! Second Brother, can we trade?"
Yan Jiaqiang and Yan Weifeng were somewhat surprised. The jade was indeed exquisite. They looked at Du Rulan, puzzled.
Before Yan Ge could speak, Du Rulan scolded Yan Yan, "What are you trying to do by trading? Aren't they all the same?" She snatched the jade back and returned it to the box. Realizing she had overreacted, she changed her expression, speaking gently to Yan Yan, "This jade might be slightly more beautiful than the others, but they all have the same properties. Your second brother was missing for two years. It's only fair for me to compensate him. Yan Yan, listen to me."
Yan Ge smiled slightly, not saying anything.
Yan Yan's eyes were still on the box, a hint of reluctance in his expression. "Since they all have the same properties, what's the harm in trading? Mom, if you've given it to Second Brother, it's his. And Second Brother hasn't said he doesn't want to trade with me. Second Brother, shall we exchange?"
Yan Ge nodded with a smile, "Alright."
Du Rulan's face turned serious as she slapped Yan Yan's shoulder, scolding sharply, "Yan Yan, wjy don't you understand anything? It's just a piece of jade. I compensated your second brother, and you're causing trouble."
Her slap was not gentle at all and Yan Yan's eyes reddened instantly. He realized that crying like this would be embarrassing, and he abruptly stood up, dashing upstairs to his room, and forcefully slamming the door shut.
Du Rulan glanced at the second floor with worry, then turned her head, smiling gently at Yan Ge and saying warmly, "Remember to keep it close to you. It will bless you with safety."
"Thank you, Mom. It's getting late, and I have to go back with Yuchen."
"Alright," Du Rulan nodded, "Drive safely."
As soon as Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen got into the car, Huangfu Yuchen took out the jade, trying to sense its energy fluctuations. He paused for a moment, put the jade back into the box, and then took it out again.
"Baby, this jade is unusual," Huangfu Yuchen said, "When you don't touch it, you can't feel its energy fluctuations, but when you touch it, you can sense it clearly."
"Where did she get something like this?" Yan Ge asked as he reached out. He was nervous, afraid that there might be something strange about the jade. What if something happened to Yuchen when he touched it?
Huangfu Yuchen pushed away Yan Ge's hand, "She gave it to you, so it's bound to be unusual. Don't touch it for now."
"Are you alright?" Yan Ge quickly scanned Huangfu Yuchen.
"I'm fine." Huangfu Yuchen was afraid that Yan Ge would touch the jade, so he held it in his hand. "Let's talk about it after we get back."
Seeing Huangfu Yuchen's expression, Yan Ge knew that he wouldn't give it to him, so he could only start the car.
Back at the villa, the two of them sat in the living room to examine the jade.
Yan Ge reached out, but Huangfu Yuchen slapped his hand away, giving him a stern look.
Huangfu Yuchen contemplated. If Du Rulan was really up to something, and this attempt failed, there might be another one. He needed to find out what was going on. Moreover, with Yan Ge by his side, he could intervene in time if anything happened. Thinking of this, he handed the jade to Yan Ge.
Yan Ge held out his hand, and the jade fell into his palm. His keen eyes caught a silver thread-like gleam flashing from the five black dots, and a strange feeling passed through his mind. Although it was difficult to put into words, it was definitely unsettling. He instinctively let go of the jade, and it dropped onto the carpet.
Huangfu Yuchen quickly placed his hand over Yan Ge's, asking with concern, "Are you okay?"
Yan Ge shook his head, frowning at the jade on the carpet, "I'm fine. It's just that this thing really doesn't feel right, it's very strange."
Huangfu Yuchen's expression turned cold. What exactly was Du Rulan trying to do?
"Don't overthink it. Let's have someone investigate whether there were any strange actions on the days when Du Rulan called you and the two days before. Besides, tomorrow is the cultivator exchange meeting. Let's bring this jade along. Wang Zhiyuan is a local after all, so he might know what's going on with this jade."
"Yeah, I'll make the call." Yan Ge took a few steps, then turned back to instruct, "Yuchen, don't touch it directly again."
"Rest assured." Huangfu Yuchen used the lid of the gift box to cover the jade, sealing it once more.
Yan Ge had dealt with detective agencies before when he started his company. He searched for the phone number online, made the call, offered a high price, and asked them to investigate Du Rulan's whereabouts on the day she called him.
On the other hand, Huangfu Yuchen called Ji Chang, asking him to deliver the invitation letter to them early the next morning.
The two temporarily set the matter aside, washed up, and went to bed.
Ji Chang had initially thought that there was no hope for Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen to attend the cultivator exchange meeting, and he was pleasantly surprised when he got the call and readily agreed. Afterward, he called Old Wang.
Wang Zhiyuan was also delighted and told Ji Chang to treat Yan Ge and Huangfu Yuchen with extreme courtesy.
