Chapter 2
The scene of that day kept running through my mind. Mirabel pushing Antonio, grabbing the door. But it was the look in her eyes that was burned into my memory. Her eyes had a hint of anger and hatred. But there was also kindness and sadness. It look like a battle between the two. Then she fell into the crater of Casita. I shivered.
"Now we know she's alive." I whispered. I watched as Dolores picks some flowers in the field. I chuckled to myself. She reminded me of myself when I was a young girl, picking flowers for my mother.
"What are the flowers for Dolores?" I called. She didn't answer. She then looked at me.
"What?" She yelled. I rolled my eyes. How could I be so stupid. I wave her off. She shrugged her shoulders and went back to her flowers.
Once again, the thoughts creeped in. I went inside to clear my head. Maybe some tea would help. I walked towards the kitchen, passing Luisa's room. I could hear her bawling. It made my heart hurt. Pepa passed me as I walked by.
"Hi Pepa."
She just shrugged. I frowned. I turned back towards the kitchen. Julieta was trying to cook. I went past her and grabbed an apple. An apple was better than her cooking right now. Then I felt a chill down my back. Like eyes peering in on me. I looked around. Nothing. I look outside the window. There was the little jungle next to the house. I squinted, trying to get a look of what was out there. Again, nothing.
I shook my head, looking back at the apple. I gasped, dropping the apple. It was rotten. I look back at the window. In the jungle, a chuckling Mirabel stood next to one of the trees. More thoughts creeped into my mind. Then one stood out. It was a thought of hope. I head for the back door. I swung it open, storming towards Mirabel. She wasn't chuckling any more. Instead she looked surprised. I kept my distance but held firm. She just stared at me. Her green eyes shadowed.
"Mirabel," I said, calmly. "Come back."
She just stared at me. Some hope washed her face, then shadowed once more. She screamed an unholy scream. I grab my ears, shutting my eyes. It was blood curdling. When it stopped, I opened my eyes. Mirabel was gone. I sighed in disappointment, but was determined to save Mirabel.
