Chapter XIII.
Last Time.
"Alright then, we're in this together!" Blake said perking up Ruby.
"Let's hatch a plan!"
"Yeah!"
"I left my board game at the library!" Ruby gasped at that.
"No, I got it."
They looked to see Naruto holding the game. "Sorry, had to go back to get another book and saw it there." He said before looking to his left to see Cinder, Emerald, and Mercury on the other side of the hall in school clothes.
Mercury is wearing a black jacket with a light gray outline around the edges, a white undershirt, and a white band around the student's left arm.
The women are wearing the same shirt with a gray and black checkered skirt.
"You're here for the festival, right?" Naruto asked before thumbing over his shoulder. "Exchange students have their own dormitory."
"I guess we just got turned around," Mercury said with a smile while the three walked toward him while Ruby quickly takes the game back.
"It happens all the time. Your building is just East of here."
Cinder smiled as she passed him. "Thanks. Maybe we'll see you around."
"Yeah, maybe," Naruto said looking over his shoulder before saying goodnight to Team RWBY.
Only to blush as Yang had her chest bounce a little to fluster him again.
Now.
Beacon Academy.
Naruto stood outside of Team RWBY's door dressed in a black vest over a dark orange shirt, black jeans, and a dark orange belt with orange sneakers.
He heard them talk about their plan of hunting Torchwick.
"Alright, guys, today's the day! The investigation begins!" Ruby yelled out having Naruto chuckle at her enthusiasm.
"I'm glad to see we're taking this so seriously." Weiss sarcastically said as Naruto heard one of them jump on the floor.
"Hey, we've got a plan! That's... Moderately serious." Yang said with a slight pause.
"Right! Everyone remembers their roles?" Ruby asked before Weiss started to explain.
"You and I will head to the CCT and check the Schnee records for any other Dust robberies or inconsistencies. Seeing as I'm in the family, it shouldn't be a problem."
"The White Fang has regular faction meetings to hand out orders and recruit new members. If I can get in, I can hopefully find out what they're planning." Blake picked up after Weiss.
"I have an old friend on the shady side of town that typically knows everything going on in Vale. Getting information out of him shouldn't be too hard…" Yang trailed off before Ruby yelled.
"Great! We'll meet up tonight near Yang to go over what we found. Let's do this!"
"Yeah!"'
Naruto blinked at the male voice that spoke before pushing the door open to see Sun was at the window hanging by his tail and the girls in new outfits.
Blake is now wearing a white, v-neck, zip-up crop shirt with a black hem and three-quarter sleeves. Her emblem is printed in off-white on the left side of the shirt. She has black pants that have a vertical gray stripe on the outer side of each leg and a black belt.
Attached to the rear of the belt is a black piece of fabric that covers her from hip to hip. Underneath this is a longer, translucent, purple piece of fabric. She's also wearing black high-heel boots with two straps and buckles and purple underoles, reaching to mid-calf. She still has her black ribbons on her forearms and her black bow.
Ruby is wearing a long-sleeve, light gray shirt with black belted cuffs near the ends of the sleeves. Over the top of the gray shirt is a black pinafore with two vertical lines of red stitching that resemble the lacing on a corset. She's wearing a red skirt with a large black print of her emblem on the side and matching black tulle underneath.
Her stockings and shoes are still the same, though the boots lack the red trim that decorated the top. A few pieces of metal arranged in an abstract shape are attached to the shoulder of her left sleeve, and her cloak's hood has been wrapped around her neck in a scarf-like fashion, while the rest hangs down like normal.
Weiss is wearing a white, double-breasted pea coat with black piping, cuffs, and buttons over a white, pleated full skirt with black lace trim. She also has on a pair of white, thigh-high boots with black heels and lace-topped black stockings.
Yang is wearing a deep-collared cream vest worn over a low-cut black shirt; both are covered by a dark gray shrug with a raised collar, three-quarter sleeves adorned with a single black stripe down the outside of each sleeve, and gold cuffs. A black mini skirt is worn under the cream vest.
She has a pair of crooked black belts with gold accents that are slung around her hip, with a purple piece of fabric attached to the left-rear section of the lower belt. She's wearing thigh-high stockings attached to a miniskirt by garter belts on the front and back of each thigh, decorated with four golden studs above her knee and her emblem on the outside of each thigh in gold.
She also has black ankle boots with multiple buckles and white ribbons on the back tied in a bow. Around her neck is a purple pendant set in silver.
"Sun!"
"Naruto!"
"How did you get up there?" Yang asked the Faunus who smiled.
"Ah, it's easy; I do it all the time."
"You do what?!"
"I climb trees all the time! So, are we finally getting back at that Torchwick guy?"
"We are going to investigate the situation... As a team." Blake spoke up as she gestured to her team.
"Sorry, Sun, Naruto. We don't want to get friends involved if we don't have to." Ruby said as Sun smiled, flipped in, and thumbed over his shoulder.
"Psh! That's dumb! We should always get friends involved! That's why I brought Neptune!"
The girls lean out the window on top of one another having Naruto turns his head as he saw Ruby's and Weiss' panties for a split second.
"'Sup?"
He heard Neptune speak up before Ruby raised an eyebrow. "How did you even get up here?"
"I have my ways. Seriously, though, can I come in? We're like, really high up right now.
After getting in, Ruby sighed before speaking "Alright, I'll go with Weiss; Sun, you can go with Blake. And Naruto…"
"Can come with me!" Yang appeared beside her fellow blonde with a smile.
"What about your team Naruto?"
"I told them that I'll call them if I got into trouble… I'd rather not involve them in case this gets up in trouble with the school."
"I'm surprised Natsu was OK with that," Weiss spoke as Naruto shrugged.
"Again, told him he could be banned from being a huntsman."
Ruby And Weiss.
"Woooow! I forget how big the Transmit tower looks up close!"
Ruby said looking at the large and tall tower. "You should see the one in Atlas!"
"That was the first one, right?"
"Correct." Weiss nodded as they got close to the building. "Atlas developed the Cross Continental Transmit System to allow the four kingdoms to communicate with one another. It was their gift to the world after the Great War."
"Oooh, look at me! My name's Weiss! I know facts! I'm rich!" Ruby teased having Weiss huff.
"Don't be a pest! Besides, the only reason we're here is because you like the tower so much! We could have just as easily made a call from the library!"
"I know, but it's so coool! Ooh, I'm going to take a picture!"
She grabs her Scroll from a pocket in her clothes, but the device is launched from her hands, bouncing along the pavement until it lands at Penny's feet.
"Oh!" Penny picked it up and held it out to Ruby. "You dropped this."
"Penny?!"
"Uuuh…"
"Where have you been? We haven't seen you since we were looking for Blake!" Ruby spoke as Penny threw the scroll in Ruby's hands.
"S-Sorry. I think you're confused. Uh... I've got to go!"
"What was that about?" Weiss asked her leader who shook her head.
'I don't know, but I'm going to find out. You go make your call! I'll meet up with you later!" Ruby ran off after Penny at that.
"Wait!" Weiss yelled before sighing then walked to the tower to go inside.
Ruby ran up to Penny and caught up with her. "Penny! Where have you been? It's been weeks!"
"There seems to be a... misunderstanding."
"What?!" Ruby asks as Penny continues to walk away down stone steps. Ruby follows by sliding down the rail next to her. "Penny... Is everything okay?" Penny continues having Ruby grab her arm. "Penny, please stop! Look, I don't know what's wrong, but I need you to tell me what's wrong. Please... As a friend."
Penny sighs before leaning in close. "Isn't safe to talk here."
Inside the tower, Weiss walks through the grand, glowing lobby of the tower, avoiding the central terminal and heading straight for the elevator doors, which slide open automatically and close when she's inside. She then heard a female's voice from the speakers.
"Hello. Welcome to the CCT. How may I help you?"
"I'd like to go to the communications room, please." She spoke placing a hand on her hip.
"Absolutely. Could you please place your Scroll on the terminal to verify your identity?" Weiss retrieves her Scroll and places it on a pad. "Perfect! Thank you, Miss Schnee."
Once getting to the room, Weiss walks up to the front desk where a holographic secretary appears in the seat. "Welcome to the Beacon Cross Continental Transmit center. How may I help you?"
"I need to make a call to Schnee Company World Headquarters in Atlas," Weiss replied as the hologram nodded.
"Absolutely. If you could head over to Terminal 3, I'll patch you through."
"Thank you!" Weiss smiles and nods before walking over to her assigned cubicle-like computer. She sits down and takes a deep, unhappy breath. The face of a short-haired brunette appears on the monitor with the Schnee snowflake rotating behind her. She does not realize who she is talking to until she looks up.
"Thank you for calling the Atlas- Oh!" She stopped and recognizes Weiss. "Miss Schnee! Good afternoon! Would you like me to patch you through to your father? I think your sister Winter might be here as well."
"No, thank you! I was actually wondering if you could find some files for me. I've compiled a short list." Weiss puts her Scroll into a slot on the keyboard, creating a series of noises as the Operator looks at the data from her side of the screen.
"I see. If you don't mind... what may I ask is this for?"
"School project."
The Operator looked nervous at that. "Um... There are some sensitive documents on this list, ma'am."
"Well, then, I'll be sure to treat them with care," Weiss said with a smile.
"Right... Very well. The data is being transferred to your Scroll now."
"Wonderful! That will be all, then."
"Are you sure you wouldn't like me to patch you through to your father before you go?" The woman asked as Weiss loses her smile but quickly replaces it.
"Yes, I'm sure."
"Well, then... Have a nice day!"
Back outside, Penny stands alone near a two-story building with patio furniture and she is looking around nervously when a hand grabs her shoulder, causing her to jump. She turns to see Ruby grinning. She smiles in return before the two strolls down the street. "I wish I could help you, Ruby, but I don't know anything about those men."
"Then where did you go?" Ruby asked after question Penny if she knew anything.
"I've never been to another kingdom before. My father asked me not to venture out too far, but... You have to understand, my father loves me very much; he just worries a lot."
Ruby nodded at that. "Believe me, I know the feeling. But why not let us know you were okay?"
"I… Was asked not to talk to you. Or Weiss. Or Blake. Or Yang. Anybody, really."
"Was your dad that upset?" Ruby asked in confusion as Penny shook her head.
"No, it wasn't my father…"
Before she can continue, she and Ruby heard someone announcing something, turning around the corner to look at the platform in the center of a plaza where the holographic image of James Ironwood is seen before six Androids, who are in turn standing in front of two large metal storage cases with the spear-and-shield emblem on their doors.
Ironwood then started to speak. "The AK-130 has been a standard security model of Remnant for several years, and they have done a fine job. Wouldn't you agree? Wouldn't you agree?" He asked the crowd who clapped as the drones take a jerky bow. "But… The kingdom of Atlas is a kingdom of innovation, and 'fine'... Well, that's just not good enough, is it? Presenting... the Atlesian Knight-200!"
The doors to the cases roll up, and six new, bulkier, shinier automatons stand at attention before knocking the others down. "Smarter, sleeker, and admittedly, a little less scary. These models will become active later this year, but they won't be alone! Now, the Atlesian Military has always supported the idea of removing men from the dangers of the battlefield. However, there are still many situations that will undoubtedly require… A human touch."
"Ruby...?" Penny nervously asked Ruby who looked at the hologram.
"So, our kingdom's greatest minds, in cooperation with the Schnee Dust Company, are proud to introduce... the Atlesian Paladin!"
Ironwood is replaced with the hologram of a robotic white behemoth, featuring hinged piston legs, large guns for hands, and a rectangular head, standing at least twice as tall as the Knights below it.
"Now, we couldn't have them here for you today, but these mechanized battle suits will be seen defending the borders of our kingdom within the year!"
"Whoa…" Ruby spoke out in awe before Penny spoke.
"Ruby? Maybe we should go somewhere else."
"At the side of the stage, two armored soldiers see Penny. Penny backs away and then breaks into a dead run, which snaps Ruby out of her weapon-awe-induced stupor. "Penny! Wait! Where are you going?"
Ruby turns to look back at the soldiers chasing after her friend and swiftly follows her in an attempt to catch up down the winding alley. Penny and Ruby run across the street with the soldiers following them, though a honking car nearly runs one over. He manages to brace his hands against the hood, which somehow stops the vehicle, and his partner runs along after the girls.
Ruby is still trying to catch up with Penny, but a high stack of crates on a flimsy support is easily cut down by Crescent Rose, causing a wooden avalanche of boxes to block the path. Seeing Penny right ahead of her, Ruby leaps into the air and lands on the alley wall, ricocheting off to grab Penny around the middle. "This way!" She grimaces before they disappeared in a flurry of petals.
Ruby dashes away as fast as she can while carrying Penny, but they crash to the ground a short while later, with Ruby falling into the street. She gets up slowly and doesn't notice the large truck coming up from behind her until the honking is too late of a warning. She stands up just as she's about to be hit, but from out of nowhere, Penny pushes Ruby out of the way and holds her palms out.
The ground beneath Penny cracks and crumbles into pieces, and the truck is lifted a little way into the air. She puts it down, and the driver stares in awe at the crumples in his hood, with Ruby mirroring. "Penny...?"
"Are you okay?" Penny asked the driver seeing it was the Dust store owner who nodded.
Penny backs away, looking at Ruby's frightened expression, then at the bystanders murmuring to each other. Penny then runs from the Atlas soldiers still chasing her down and bumps into Ruby, knocking her out of her stupor. "Penny! Come back!" She yelled chasing Penny who stopped. "Penny! Please! What is going on?! Why are you running? How did you do that?!"
"I-I can't! Everything's fine! I-I don't want to talk about it! (Hiccup!)" Penny replied with a hiccup at the end.
"Penny, if you can just tell me what's wrong, I can help you!"
"No! No, no! You wouldn't understand…" Penny backed away from Ruby at that.
"Let me try! You can trust me!"
Penny finally relents, coming up to Ruby. "You're my friend, right? You promise you're my friend?!"
"I promise."
Penny, after staying silent for a second, then, looks down at her hands. "Ruby... I'm not a real girl."
Penny shows Ruby the toll of stopping the truck that would have killed her: Parts of her palm's skin have ripped away, revealing the gray metal underneath. Penny stares sadly at Ruby's face, now completely astounded by her friend's secret. "Oh."
Penny explains that she is an artificial life form, more specifically the first synthetic person capable of generating an Aura. Ruby takes the information calmly and in an accepting matter, causing Penny to be overjoyed. Their moment of celebration, however, is cut short just as the two Atlas Soldiers pursuing them earlier manage to catch up with them.
Penny quickly hides Ruby in a dumpster and asks her to promise not to tell anyone that she is a robot. The soldiers arrive, and Penny agrees to leave with them, allowing Ruby to evade getting into trouble with the Atlas military.
Naruto And Yang.
The duo rode to Junior's club on Bumblebee with Naruto riding his, with Fox Bolt in his holster before they stopped at the door. Getting off they walked to the club and inside where Yang threw her hands up. "Miss me?"
She asked as the security aimed at them with their weapons. Just then a man and two young twin women walked toward them. The man is standing at 6'11" wearing a black vest over a white dress shirt, a red tie, black gloves, and black dress pants. He has gray eyes, and short black hair, along with a matching beard and mustache.
The first twin has long black hair and pale green eyes, highlighted by heavy cyan makeup. She's wearing a white, strapless dress with cyan lining.
Her accessories include a large white flower hairpin above her left ear, a white feather scarf, a silver pad with cyan and red feathers on her left shoulder, white gloves, a small silver bracer over the glove on her left arm, a bow in the center of the top-most part of her bodice, a silver chain belt, cyan wings on the lower back, and long white boots with blades at the heels.
Her sister has short black hair and pale green eyes, highlighted by heavy red makeup. She's wearing a red strapless dress with black lining.
Her accessories include large red and white feathers above her left ear, black fur hanging off her shoulders and held at the front by a dark gray chain, red gloves, a black bow tied around her waist, and long red boots with very high stiletto heels. Her dress seems to be made out of, or is decorated with, newspaper articles with the heading 'A New York la pop art di Alborghetti.' on the skirt.
"Stop, stop! Nobody shoot. Blondie! You're here. Why?"
"You still owe me a drink," Yang said as she drags Junior to the bar.
Yang proceeds to interrogate him about Roman Torchwick. "I don't know."
"How can you not know?" Yang asked as Junior cleaned a glass.
"I haven't talked to him. I haven't even seen him since the night you first came in here. He paid upfront, I lent him my men, and none of them ever came back."
Naruto sighed at that. "Any idea where they went?"
"What kind of stupid question is that? They never came back! I haven't seen him since that night! Torchwick hired my boys, and I guess he wasn't happy with them. WHICH IS SOMETHING I CAN RELATE TO!" He yelled at his men who looked sheepish.
Blake and Sun.
The two found the warehouse where the White Fang is meeting before putting on white Grimm masks to not only hide their identity but also to get in by pretending they were White Fang members.
Inside, they saw a man on a stage in front of a black banner with the red White Fang logo. "Thank you all for coming. For those of you just joining us allow me to introduce a very special comrade of ours." He said as Roman walked out. "I can assure you he is the key to obtaining what we have fought for, for so long."
"Thank you, thank you! Please, hold your applause." Roman said to the crowd.
"What's a human doing here?"
"I'm glad you asked, dearie. Now, I'll be the first to admit, humans are the WORST. Case in point." Roman said tapping his hat. "So I understand why you would love to see us all locked away, or better yet: killed! You and I ALL have a common enemy. The ones in control, the people who pull the strings, the dirty rotten humans who run our kingdoms. Government. Military. Even the schools they're all to blame for your lot in life."
The Faunus started to cheer for Roman who continued. "And they're all pests that need to be dealt with. Fortunately, I'm the best exterminator around. No offense to any rodents in the room." He said turning to walk onto the stage and saw a woman standing off to the side.
She has half-pink and half-brown hair, with white streaks on the pink side. She has heterochromia iridium eyes one brown and the other pink. She's wearing a white cropped wide, broad-tailed jacket with a pink interior, collar, a single gold button, and large pink cuffs. She's wearing brown pants with a dark belt that has a gray buckle and an additional narrow belt under it.
Under her jacket is a brown corset, curved in the middle and at the bottom, exposing her hips. She also has a multitude of black beaded necklaces, which hang haphazardly around her neck. Neo also wears black and white spat styled under-the-knee boots alongside black gloves.
Roman then snapped his fingers having the banner fall revealing a giant mech suit. Inside there is a cockpit that houses and secures one pilot, with several holographic displays available to monitor the status of the suit. It's equipped with two arm-mounted energy guns, rear-mounted rocket launchers, and double-barreled guns attached to the aforementioned energy guns.
He explained it's one of Atlas' newest weapons to combat Grimm and was able to steal a few of them with the help of his boss so the White Fangs who decide to stay in the city can use them. Blake saw a circuit breaker before hitting it and had the lights go out before she and Sun started running to an exit. They broke through a window where Blake quickly called the others to her location.
Everyone met up on the highway where they saw Roman in the suit chasing after Blake and Sun who were running on cars. Yang and Naruto arrive on their bikes. "We gotta slow the mech down."
"Got it!"
Roman is alerted to their presence by an alarm, so he uses the mech's arms to knock cars backward at the bikes. Yang and Naruto drive around the cars before Naruto hit a button with his right thumb.
"WHOO-HOO!"
Blue fire shot out of his exhaust while he sped down the road and pulled a wheel stand for a moment. He looked to see Sun and Neptune on the roofs. Neptune unfolds his gun into its glaive form, but quickly transforms it into its trident form and proceeds to twirl it around himself before jumping and stabbing the mech in the head area.
After the initial thrust, Neptune is thrown about on top of the mech due to Roman's efforts to dislodge him by rotating the mech erratically. Sun then draws and straightens his staff and leaps across to the mech, while Neptune is thrown off with his weapon. The two collide in mid-air, and they fall off the raised motorway, disappearing from the fight.
Naruto went to the edge and saw them land safely. "They're alright!"
Naruto pulled away before hearing Ruby. "Blake, I'm in position!"
Weiss jumps down from another raised motorway, and she proceeds to stare down Roman before using Dust in Myrtenaster to create a circle of ice on the ground. The Paladin then slips and flips over Weiss, sliding through and breaking a holographic barrier and off the motorway. Below, Ruby Rose waits for the mech to fall, and it lands upright.
The rest of the team joins Ruby below and reloads while the mech slowly advances. Naruto slid to a stop by them and pulled his pistols out and aimed it at the bot. "What's the plan?"
"Freezer burn!" Ruby yelled at Weiss and Yang to team up.
Weiss creates another circle of ice, which Yang smashes with Ember Celica, creating mist around the mech. Roman activates the mech's lasers to locate the team, but the cloud is effective at screening their movements as they quickly circle him. Naruto takes shots as he ran around as Blake and Yang are almost hit by the mech's main arm cannon fire.
Naruto then fired on the cockpit having Ruby score a hit on the mech. Ruby reloads her gun and looks up. "Checkmate!"
Blake, Naruto, and Weiss move forward to the mech, attacking its legs. Blake uses her Semblance to create copies of herself to confuse Roman while Weiss jumps and stabs the laser emitter before backing off. Roman then tries to stomp a distracted Blake, but Weiss uses a white glyph to move Blake backward and dodge the foot.
In response, he launches shoulder-mounted rockets at the pair, but they dodge the rockets with a well-timed glyph and a series of gymnastic back handsprings. However, Roman fires the mech's main arm cannons after Weiss and sends her backward. Naruto caught her as she uses Myrtenaster to fire yellow energy toward Blake, a mixture of yellow Dust and her Semblance creating a haste glyph beneath the Faunus.
As Roman fires missiles at her, Blake glows yellow and rapidly swings Gambol Shroud through the air, creating countless purple strikes with her swings that slice the incoming missiles in half. With the rockets destroyed, Ruby reenters the fray. "Ladybug!"
She uses Crescent Rose to swing off the mech groin area to send herself behind it. She then fires to propel herself back toward the mech, passing through and slicing at its legs, while Blake does the same. Naruto dropping Weiss started firing at the cockpit again to gain Roman's attention as Blake and Ruby switched back and forth repeatedly, slashing at the mech's legs with each pass.
Then, Roman tries to shoot Ruby, but she jumps upwards and dodges the shot. She and Blake strike down with the moon behind them, slicing off the mech's left arm. Yang then jumps onto the mech and punches it repeatedly on the back, but Roman quickly launches it backward, slamming her through two pillars and into a third.
As she falls, the mech's right arm shifts to form a fist and punches her through the weakened second pillar. This onslaught activates her Semblance. Ruby explains Yang becomes stronger after taking damage. Roman attempts to punch Yang again as she slowly gets to her feet, but she catches it, creating a shock wave that breaks the ground. Eyes red and hair glowing brightly, Yang punches the mech's fist, shattering its arm.
Roman responds by kicking Yang away, past Ruby and Blake. "Bumblebee!"
Blake threw Gambol Shroud to Yang in its chain-sickle form and then forcefully yank back on the ribbon, righting Yang to her feet. This enables Yang to orbit around Blake, using her as a pivot, and she speeds up by firing backward with Ember Celica. With another pull from Blake, Yang lifts off the ground and swings towards the mech at high speed, but it leaps backward, avoiding her strike.
"We need to slow it down," Ruby yells to the others as Naruto was beside her shooting at the mech.
"How do we do that?!"
"Ice flower!"
Ruby sets Crescent Rose parallel with the ground and Weiss charges her Semblance, a white flare edged with dark blue streaming through the air with Myrtenaster. Weiss creates three white glyphs in front of Crescent Rose's barrel, each smaller than the last. When Ruby fires, the bullet passes through the glyphs, and it becomes a blue streak of energy with a swirling trail of smaller cyan-colored streaks.
Upon striking the mech, the shot produces a large number of ice crystals that prevent it from moving. Three more shots of ice follow, completely freezing the mech in place. Blake helps Yang swing around again, and Yang fires a shot, once again lifting off. A trail of gold light following her hair, Yang speeds toward the mech and punches the cockpit, visibly deforming the metal and sending the mech crashing to the ground.
When it hits the ground, the mech shatters into a scrap with Roman in the middle, somehow almost instantly gaining his footing. "Just got this thing cleaned!"
Yang then fires a shot at Roman, but Neopolitan drops down in front of him and completely blocks it with her lace umbrella Hush. Roman calls upon Neo, who takes a slow bow. The team regroups before Yang rushes forward to punch Neo, who moves to block the attack with her umbrella.
"Ladies, gentleman… Ice Queen."
"Hey!"
"Always a pleasure. Neo, if you would."
Yang makes to strike Neo, only for a cyan wall to appear for a split second, and the wall, Neo, and Roman appear to shatter like glass. The shards collapse to the ground and Yang looks around for her enemies, only to see them already escaping in a Bullhead.
"Damn it!" Naruto cursed before spinning his pistols and then puts them in his holsters. "(Sigh) Guess we should head back." He said walking up to the others.
