Allison met Leo at one of the family's favorite restaurants.
"You actually came alone," Leo teased.
"I can do things with out Asher and Ev," Allison replied.
"Other than work," Leo asked.
"Not much," Allison agreed.
"You doing okay," Leo asked.
"Ya," Allison replied "just figuring out what's next for us. I almost quit surgery twice already."
"Why," Leo asked.
"Ev misses me being home all the time," Allison replied, "I'm not as available as I was."
"And she's 9 now almost 10," Leo said.
"8 almost 9," Allison corrected, "don't rush my baby growing up."
"Hardly a baby now," Leo replied.
"Always my baby," Allison argued, "but you? Hows army life?"
"Kinda what I expected," Leo replied, 'I did the training and what I had to do all the way through school. It's not unexpected. I feel bad for mom and Auntie Meg though. Theres like 5 women where I am and it had to have been worse in their day."
"Probably," Allison agreed, "do you like it?"
"I don;t know," Leo replied, "I guess I thought it would be more exciting and I'd get to do more but you and I do the same things and the same surgeries."
"We're interns," Allison replied, "how much can we really do? I want to do more but they baby step us forward."
"I want an adventure," Leo replied, "I want to go some where to really help."
"Leo you can't," Allison gasped, 'You can't go half way around the world and almost die. You can't go away."
"I might have to," Leo replied, "things are heating up in the middle east again. Allie it's the reality of what I chose. We grew up with Mom and Dad's stories and I want to. Mom, dad, Auntie Meg, Uncle Nate, Chris. We all grew up with the stories, I want to go and help."
"What about me or Ev," Allison asked, "Leo I need you. I don't want to lose you."
"It'll be okay," Leo said.
"But Aunite Meg," Allison replied.
"I won't be like her," Leo assured, "I want to be like mom. I want to be the leader mom is and this is how I'm going to learn to do it."
"But what if," Allison asked.
"You can't think like that," Leo replied, "it will be fine. You have a whole life that doesn't include me and hasn't in 10 years."
"I have my family but I still need my brother," Allison replied, "I'll always need and want my brother."
"I wont be captured," Leo said.
"Or die," Allison asked.
"Or die," Leo promised, "but Allie I probably won't come back to Seattle. I'll meet someone and we'll do what works for us. You and Asher made decisions for the three of you."
"Staying in Seattle," Allison grumbelled.
"That was the matching people," Leo replied, "had you matched elsewhere you would have gone."
"Long term for Ev and Ash it's better," Allison replied.
"Had you matched across the country," Leo asked.
"We would have gone and it would be harder than it is now," Allison replied, 'Leo this is hard. You're single, if you want to live of pizza and beer like other interns do or vending machines you can. I have a family i have to make sure eats real food and a daughter who has some sensory issues around food texture. It's not easy. You're just an intern I'm also a mom and a wife. And the other interns don't respect that."
"A couple of the guys I work with are married," Leo replied, 'doesn't bother me.'
'Do they have kids," Allison asked.
"No," Leo admitted, "do you ever regret it? Keeping Ev?"
"No," Allison replied, "with out Ev I would never have considered med school or medicine, I would probably have partied way too hard for way too long. I was partying a lot before her. Leo I made really bad drunk choices the summer before Ev. I'm sure life would be easier but I wouldn't have my family and I could not do this with out Asher and Ev. they are my reason for what I do. I will find a cure for CP and a way to make life easier for kids with it. I need to figure out if it's ortho or neuro but I will."
"You will," Leo replied, "I'm doing trauma."
"There you and Nee go again perfect little copy cats of mom and dad," Allison groaned.
"She puts her own spin on cardio,' Leo replied, 'with Peds. I don't know how you do residency with all of them."
"Nee and Josh are full time mom is 1 day OR and 1 day of clinic and dad is 3 days total," Allison replied, 'it helps. Nee remembers mom being over bearing when she was a resident I think she's trying to let me be on my own. But she's Nee."
"Over protective second mother," Leo laughed.
"Always has been," Allison replied.
"It's all I remember," Leo replied.
'Do you remember life before you were adopted," Allison asked.
"No," Leo replied, 'I talk to Britney's parents and they;re mom and dad's age but thats it."
"Do you like them,' Allison asked.
"I do it for them," Leo replied, "they want that connection to their daughter but I don't know her. I never knew her. They're nice enough but not family. I'm their grandson but they've never been my grandparents. Mom always wanted Annie and I think her family did but Britney didn't want me. Her family didn't want me."
Their meals came and conversation shifted to lighter topics.
As they finished eating, Allison's phone went off.
"Work," Allison groaned.
'Can I come," Leo asked.
'I guess," Allison answered, "we can try to get you privileges."
"Who are you with now," Leo asked.
"Josh," Allison replied, 'he'll let you."
The siblings ran to the Ped ER at Grey Sloan.
"Josh I brought hands, " Allison replied, "you said mass trauma."
"I did," Josh agreed, "and hands?"
"Leo," Allison replied.
"You can help buddy," Josh smiled, 'its all hands on deck. I can't guarantee a surgery but you are needed."
"Josh stop hogging the interns," Annie yelled coming into the pit.
"Leo with Annie," josh commanded.
"Allie," Annie called, "both of you."
"Annie," josh asked.
"I need lots of hands," Annie replied, "you two trauma 4 once you're dressed. The rig is 5 out. Now."
Leo and Allison sprinted to get dressed.
Owen who happened to be on that night was paged to help out in the peds pit. He rushed past trauma four and paused to smile seeing his three kids working.
"Who is he," a second year resident pointed to Leo.
"Corporal Leo Altman-Hunt," Leo replied, "I'm a trauma surgery intern with the army."
"My brother," Annie and Allison replied at the same time.
"What's he doing," the resident asked.
"Helping," Annie replied, "Allie I want you to do the chest tube. Leo intubate."
"Yes ma'am," Leo replied out of habit.
"Do not ma'am me," Annie replied, "I'll look for mama."
"No disrespect meant," Leo replied.
"I know bud," Annie smiled behind her mask.
Annie stepped out to let the residents and interns run the tests she needed while she came up with her surgical plan. She knew this was surgical from the call from the ambulance. They would have a long night.
When the OR was ready and all the tests were completed Annie instructed her resident and both of her siblings to scrub.
"All three of us,' Allison said.
"Leo I need strong hands on the retractors," Annie replied, "this kid it's a big repair. She's heavy, significantly overweight. I need muscles. We're going on bypass as soon as I'm in. Allison I want you to open down to the sternum then I'll take over from there."
The three siblings worked together with Annie's other residents to complete the surgery.
"Good job everyone," Annie praised as they scrubbed out, "that was touch and go for a while. She should make a full recovery and if they make the life style changes will be perfectly fine."
"If they don't,' a resident asked.
"I don't want to think about it," Annie replied, "I haven't seen that much damage since residency. That's poor diet and lack of movement. I'll speak to the family. I need 24 hour ICU monitoring until she's out of the woods. I have to have a very hard conversation with the family. This is too sensitive to involve more people. It's not about any of you. It's about the parents. Allison that includes you."
"I know," Allison replied.
"I'm going back to the pit," Leo replied, "see where I'm needed."
"All of you go see Dr Riggs," Annie replied.
Annie walked to the waiting area, "the family of Gabby Jones please. I'm looking for the family of Gabby Jones."
A couple in their mid 40s stood and walked over.
"Gabby is our foster daughter," the woman spoke.
"I'm Dr Altman," Annie replied, "come with me please. Mr and Mrs?"
"Torren," the man said, "I'm Jack and this is Jill."
'Lets go to my office," Annie suggested.
"Is Gabby," Jill asked.
"She's in post OP with one of my residents monitoring her," Annie replied, "she will be transferred to ICU soon and you can see here there. How long has Gabby been in your care?"
"5 days," Jack replied, 'she was removed for neglect and you saw her."
"I did," Annie replied, "her health is concerning. She will need significant life style changes going forward that we can help you with."
"We saw a paediatrician three days ago,' Jill replied, 'he put her on medication for weight loss and prescribed diet and exercise."
"I don't like those medications in children her age," Annie replied, 'she's 11. I want to take her off the medication and run further tests. I'm a cardiothoracic surgeon, I can work on her heart and get her heart functioning well. We'll get an internal medicine specialist and endocrinologist involved and get a full work up now that the emergency has passed. This is hard to hear. Her lungs collapsed, her heart was constricted and the damage to her heart was extensive. I haven't seen that level of damage in a child before. "
"What can we do,' Jack asked.
"Get her moving," Annie replied, "motivate her to move and make it fun."
"Can we see her," Jill asked.
"I'll get an intern to take you up to ICU," Annie replied feeling her phone buzz in her pocket, 'I'm being called to another patient. If you have any questions please have the nurses page me."
When things calmed down Allison drove Leo home.
"I want what you have," Leo admitted as they pulled into the drive way at Teddy and Owen's.
"What,' Allison asked.
"Some one you know loves you and cares for you,' Leo said, 'a kid who thinks you make the world run. Al I want that to have someone who loves me for me. Girls don't like me for me. To them I'm my career not me. They see the uniform or the scalpel. I want to be me.'
"Mom and dad," Allison offered.
"I don't know with co-workers I wouldn't want to make things awkward or her to feel bad," Leo replied, "I don't want to hurt anyone or lead anyone on. I can't offer someone stability right now and it's not fair it's not right. I go on dates but I don't want flings and meaningless sex. I want a relationship but I can't now not until I'm more settled. It's not fair to her."
"You could if you wanted to,' Allison replied.
"I can't risk hurting her,' Leo replied, "it's not okay. I want to do it right and that means being present."
"The right person will understand," Allison assured, "and support your dreams and you. Leo you can choose to have it all. Be open and up front but you can have it all.'
'Do you," Leo asked.
'It's work but I do,' Allison assured with a yawn.
"We worked all night," Leo replied.
"But we finally got to work together and with Nee," Allison replied, 'that's good."
"It is it was fun to work the three of us," Leo said, 'she's as bossy as mom though."
"In the OR she is," Allison agreed.
"Do you need to get home," Leo asked.
'I should I'm off today and I promised I would take Ev to school,' Allison smiled.
'Give my princess a hug for me and I'll come after school to pick her up with you," Leo replied.
'Last day before christmas break she's excited,' Allison replied, "I'll text about half an hour before I pick you up. School's out at 3."
"See you at 2;30 then," Leo asked.
'Sure," Allison replied, 'see you later.'
