The Defenders of Remnant

Epilogues

Doctor Strange

Strange sat cross legged alone in the undercroft of the Sanctum Sanctorum. Needless to say, he was furious. No one heeded his warnings, and now he could feel it; the power in the multiverse was shifting. Worlds were dividing, combing, coming apart and being put back together again. The multiverse of madness had been created, and there was nothing that could stop it.

"Stephen Strange," A familiar voice said. Strange opened his and looked around, then he recognized the voice.

"It's you again. The one who saved me before, warned me," Strange said.

"A warning that didn't seem to take," The voice replied.

Strange sighed and shook his head. "I tried to tell them, to make them listen, but they wouldn't! Not only did Parker break the universe on their end, but the Avengers crossed the threshold, only cementing our fate."

"Fate," The voice repeated. "A powerful concept. But even I am not powerful enough to correct the course of reality alone."

"What are you suggesting?" Strange questioned.

"It is time we met, Doctor Strange," The voice said. Suddenly, a flash of light nearly blinded Strange, and he looked up to see a portal in the form of a golden cross fade into existence. It was a cross Strange recognized as the egyptian ankh symbol. From it came a godly figure, wearing a blue bodysuit under a yellow cape, golden boots, golden belt, golden gloves, and shining golden helmet with two slits for eyes. Strange stood up and looked on in surprise. The cross portal faded away, and the flying helmeted man floated down to him.

"And you are?" Strange questioned.

"I am called Doctor Fate," the other replied. He then reached up and removed his helmet, revealing an older man beneath it, seemingly gentler than his exterior would lead to believe. "But my real name is Kent Nelson. You and I have much to discuss, Stephen Strange."

"I-I don't understand. You warned against this kind of fraternization, bastardizing the rules of reality!" Strange said.

"There are no rules of reality. Not anymore. Let me show you something," Kent said. He let go of his helmet, and it floated in the air on its own. He waved his hand and around them formed a diorama made of golden specks like stars. The image formed was a collection of thousands of transparent orbs, and in each orb was a pale white glowing tree with several branches growing from the main stem. "This was our corner of existence before the interference of the Defenders and Avengers on Remnant. Each orb represents a contained, singular multiverse, following its own rules, stories and people. When changes happen to a universe's core timeline naturally, it simply branches into another timeline. And another, and another. For example, if Pyrrha Nikos survived through the natural eventuality that a timeline existed where she did, it would simply branch into its own timeline, its own universal branch off the core timeline of their multiverse. That is a natural occurrence in the multiverse."

"If something like that happens all the time, what changed? Why does our presence matter?" Strange questioned.

"This," Kent said before snapping his fingers. Suddenly the image changed, and every orb was shattered. Each white tree now had blood red vein-like webs connecting each and every one to each other. "... is our sector of existence now, after Peter Parker, an outside force from a different reality, interfered with a core timeline."

"It's all… broken…" Strange muttered. "H-How do we fix it?"

"There is no 'fixing' it, at least to my knowledge. There is only surviving it. When major events of a core timeline are altered in an unnatural way, specifically Peter saving Miss Nikos, it spirals out of control, creating an infinitesimal amount of unnatural splinter universes that break down the barriers between the contained realities. The splinters break into other containments, infect those core timelines, create more splinters, and so on. An infinite butterfly effect. That is what happens when you unnaturally change an absolute point in time, a canon event." Kent wheeled onto Strange.

"To put it simply; Peter, as a visitor from your multiverse, traveled to another contained multiverse separate from your own. Not dangerous to existence in of itself, so long as it follows the same general linear path, which grants it a little wiggle room. But in every timeline, there are events that are supposed to happen in one form or another. A death at a certain place, a war beginning at a certain time. These are absolute points, canon events. The details can be mixed up, but the point is simple as this: someone was supposed to die in that tower. They didn't. And now everyone will suffer for it."

"So what exactly are we supposed to do?" Strange asked.

"Eventually, all barriers will be broken. It's impossible to stop the spread. That's why we have to be ready for what follows," Kent answered.

"What are you proposing?"

"A secret alliance. One shared between universes, a representative of each. We find others like ourselves and keep watch. Whatever is coming, we must be ready," Kent said.

"A secret cabal? What, like that Illuminati nonsense?" Strange scoffed.

"Well… it does have a certain ring to it," Kent smirked.

Doctor Strange and Doctor Fate will return...

Cardin Winchester

Cardin sat alone in the wreck of the diner everyone had frequented, munching on bits of chocolate to make the symbiote quiet and content. He wanted to be left alone for now. He'd been working hard to help rebuild Vale, but the work didn't seem to end. He didn't expect it to, after a battle like that, but he just needed a break from it all.

"Taking a rest?" A voice startled him. He looked up to see General Ironwood in the shattered doorway. "Sorry. I don't mean to intrude."

"General Ironwood? Why are you here? I thought you were leaving soon," Cardin questioned.

"Indeed. I'm on my way out, in fact. But I've been looking for a chance to speak with you, Mister Winchester," Ironwood said, walking further into the abandoned and destroyed diner.

"Why would you want to talk with me?" Cardin asked.

"Actually, I would like to talk with both of you," Ironwood corrected. Cardin grimaced and narrowed his eyes. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Frank Castle in a pristine new Atlesian uniform, still with the black painted skull, standing in the diner's doorway as well. Cardin looked back at Ironwood.

"What is this about, General?"

Ironwood moved to stand in front of Cardin. "The world's era of peace has just ended, and the ones who pushed our enemy back are no longer on Remnant. We need to form a defensive line worldwide, and fast. Unfortunately, we are stretching our resources as it is, so I have begun an initiative to place Atlas eyes and ears everywhere, including here in Vale. I want Venom to be one of those sets of eyes."

"I'm still a student at Beacon. Why are you asking us? We don't work for you," Cardin said.

"Not yet. But I'm offering you a position, to be a contracted agent of Atlas."

"Which would entail…?" Cardin raised an eyebrow.

"You'd be doing nothing different in terms of the everyday. You would still use your powers to keep Vale safe, attend classes as a Huntsman once Glynda has that underway. However, you would also report to me periodically, keep me informed, and have the same rights in my military as someone like Schee or Castle. The world just got a whole lot bigger, and we need to work together to protect it," Ironwood explained.

"We'll consider it," Cardin told him. Ironwood nodded and slipped a small card from his jacket and handed it off to Cardin.

"When you've reached a decision, contact me. If you decide to accept my offer, we can discuss some of the finer details." ironwood then headed for the door, and Cardin took one glance at the contact information on the card before pocketing it. Ironwood reached the doorway and stopped before glancing over his shoulder at Cardin. "Until we meet again, Agent Venom." Ironwood then left, leaving Cardin and Venom with much to think about.

Cardin Winchester/Venom will return...

Roman Torchwick & Neo Politan

Roman hobbled as fast as he could, his leg threatening to buckle under his moving weight. Neo wasn't far behind him, holding off the Atlas soldiers chasing them. His body still felt like it was on fire, his injuries having only gotten worse. He limped forward and tripped, collapsing onto the ground. He groaned and pulled himself forward and sat up against a tree trunk, hiding behind the back of it. He panted heavily and held the side of his torso. He needed to catch his breath. They'd been on the run for days now, and Atlas had begun to break down on them. They had nowhere to go, especially since they abandoned Cinder's plan and had to stay out of her eyes as well, if she was still alive.

Neo came around the tree and kneeled next to him before helping him to his feet. She was here, meaning she bought them a little time. She supported him on one side while he used his cane on the other. "You alright?" He asked.

Neo furrowed her brow at him with a look that said, You're worrying about me?

"Yeah, I know, but I'm not the only one here," Roman said. "Don't need you dropping too." Neo glared, but the two hobbled along as fast as they could. After a while, Torchwick winced painfully. "Alright, put me down for a few." Neo gave a concerned look, but did as asked, gently helping him sit against another tree. Roman was having a difficult time going, and that concerned Neo greatly.

She pulled her scroll out and typed away at it before having Roman read the message. You need medical help.

"Hospitals aren't exactly gonna be hush-hush about us checking in, even if we did get help," Roman shook his head. "We just have to survive. Keep running, like we did before."

You don't have the strength to run forever.

"Nah, I'm getting younger and stronger every day," Torchwick smirked.

"I think they went this way!" They heard one of the soldiers yell. Torchwick frowned.

"Time to go." Neo helped him back up and they continued on. They were clear for a few more minutes until suddenly a dust round hit Neo's shoulder, shattering on her aura. She quickly spun around and opened her parasol. The continuing Dust rounds fired from the Atla soldiers shattered on that instead. She protected herself and Roman for the time being, but she couldn't do it like this forever. They were starting to be boxed in. Torchwick growled and fired from Melodic Cudgel. The giant explosive flare from the cane collided with the ground in front of the squad of troopers, blasting them away and creating a thick dust cloud from kicked up dirt and earth. "It's really time to go!"

Neo and Roman started to continue on, only for another small squad of soldiers to form up behind them. Neo quickly shielded them before the bullets came down. Roman scowled as he saw more coming back from the other direction as well. He fired his weapon towards them again, keeping them at bay for the time being. He spun and did the same for the group in front of them. Once they had a chance, Neo grabbed Roman's arm and pulled him further into the treeline. They hadn't been caught yet, she wasn't going to let them start now.

They were running until suddenly another figure stepped in front of them. He wore a brown leather jacket with a puffed collar over a gray shirt, gray cargo pants, and muddy brown boots. In his hand was a weapon of some kind made of rusty-looking metal, with the handle of a firearm and a thin vertical barrel. Neo and Roman skid to a stop and brought their weapons up, ready to defend themselves. The man looked past them and aimed his weapon up past them.

"Get down!" he exclaimed. The two quickly dropped and the man fired. The shot was a blast of energy that blew the arm off of an approaching Atlas shoulder. It instantly cauterized the wound. Then suddenly the vertical firing end rotated to be horizontal, and the weapon fired, decapitating the Atlas soldier before he had a chance to scream.

"That was brutal," Roman said before forcing himself to his feet. "So, who are you and why did you help us?"

"You wanna play twenty questions or run and live?" The man questioned.

"Fair point," Roman replied.

"C'mon, follow me," The man waved them on. He then ran off further into the forest. Roman and Neo traded glances before hesitantly following him. They came out to a small clearing, no bigger than a small apartment, and sat in the middle of the tiny clearing was a booth of some kind. It was too dark to see its color or the text on a plaque pinned to one of its doors. "C'mon, get inside."

"This is a joke, right?" Roman questioned. "I'd question this being an ambush if you didn't just kill one of them, so instead I just think you're looney."

"Let me put it like this: you can stay out here, and they'll shoot you. You can stay out here, and I'll shoot you. Or you can get in the booth and not get shot," The man frowned.

"Again, fair point," Roman relented. Roman started to follow when Neo grabbed his arm and shook her head, clearly untrusting of the stranger. "Yeah, I know, but we don't exactly have a choice, Neo!" Neo wasn't having it.

"I hear gunfire this way!" One of the farther off soldiers called. Neo silently sighed and finally relented as well, following Roman and the stranger into the booth. Once inside, the stranger slammed the doors shut.

"Alright, Doc, we're good to go!" The man said.

Neo and Roman were left in awe. Outside, it wasn't any bigger than an old phone booth. Inside? It was much, much bigger. The walls were littered top to bottom with orb-shaped lights that lit up the interior with a golden color. In the center of the interior was a large pillar with control consoles circling its base. "What the hell did we just walk into…?" Roman muttered.

"And we're clear!" A new voice said. Roman and Neo looked to see another stranger at the control consoles. The voice had an English accent, and the man himself was tall and lanky, wearing a long brown overcoat over a blue-ish two-piece suit. He had messy brown hair and dark brown eyes. He wore a wide smile as he looked up at the two criminals. "Oh, well here we are! Roman Torchwick and Neo Politan, exactly the crooks I was hoping to see!"

Roman and Neo were completely confused by everything going on. If Neo wasn't already mute, she'd be without words. "Okay… what the hell is going on?" Torchwick questioned.

"Ah, yes, you'd have questions. By all means, fire away, we have time," The Englishman said.

"Alright then," Roman hesitantly continued. "Who are you, who is he, why is this place bigger on the inside, and can we go back to being shot at now?"

"Let's take this one step at a time, shall we?" The Englishman smiled. "That is mister Isaac Clarke." The Englishman gestured to the first stranger in the jacket, the one that saved them from the soldiers. "And I am the Doctor."

"Doctor who?" Roman asked.

"Ah, that never gets old," the Doctor grimaced. "Just the Doctor will suffice. As for this place," He threw his arms out and spun, gesturing to the large interior of what was just supposed to be a normal booth, "This is the TARDIS, my personal ship for traveling space, time, and as of recently, the multiverse, with everything as wacked out as it is currently."

"Yeah… I'm gonna go back outside to take a bullet now," Roman said before heading for the doors.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Isaac warned.

"No, let him figure it out," The Doctor waved Isaac down. Roman approached the doors and threw them open only for the outside to not be how he left it. Instead of the darkened forests of Remnant, outside was a blue tunnel of space and light, moving through reality in a way his human mind could barely comprehend. It stunned him into silence. Neo quickly grabbed him by his suit jacket and pulled him back inside. She then quickly slammed the door shut. Roman was stunned into silence. Isaac started to snicker to himself, and the Doctor smirked. "Ready to listen now?" He asked.

"I… I'm listening," Roman said. "What do you want with us?"

"Well, Mister Torchwick, I'm assembling a team. People from across existence who could help me with a little problem I'm dealing with," The doctor answered.

"What kind of problem?" Roman questioned.

"The evil conqueror kind," The Doctor answered. He took a small hand-sized disk out of his coat pocket and pressed a switch on it. From it came a hologram of a man Roman didn't recognize, not that he expected to at this point. "His name is Kang, and he has already become a scourge on our new shared multiverse, conquering worlds one by one."

"And you want us to help deal with that? You're fighting someone who takes over worlds and you want a couple of Dust robbers? If you're not kidding or crazy, then why?"

"Because, Torchwick, you can be more than simple Dust robbers. Much more."

"You do realize we are criminals, right? We break the law, we only look out for each other, we aren't the good guys," Roman reminded.

"That's exactly what I'm counting on, Roman," The Doctor said.

"We're not what you need, Doc. We're not heroes."

"No, not heroes. But if you come with us, you can become more than heroes. You can become Legends."
