Rhodey is upstairs in Tony's house, he calling for Tony. He walks downstairs and sees Tony on the floor and asks of he's okay.
Tony asks where Pepper is.
"Aw, Tony you do care." Pepper said, mimicking Tony from earlier.
"Of course I do." Tony said.
Rhodey says that she's fine and that she's with 5 agents who're about to arrest Obadiah.
Tony says that it won't be enough.
"It wasn't enough." Tony sighed.
Four cars pull up outside of the factory. Pepper and Coulson get out of the first one. Pepper opens the front door and starts looking for sector 16 She finds it and tries to get in, she cant because her key wont work.
"Looking back, I don't really know why I tried to use my key card. Of course he would have locked me out." Pepper said.
Someone hands Coulson a device. Pepper asks if its a thing that'll pick the lock.
"Uh... yeah. It'll pick the lock." Coulson said. "And a couple other things."
Coulson says she might want to take a couple steps back. Pepper walks away and covers her ears. The device creates a small explosion that opens the door. Obadiah hears the explosion and looks toward the door. He powers up the suit.
"Oh boy." Scott breathed out.
Tony is seen getting into his own suit. Rhodey says its the coolest thing he's ever seen.
"Thanks Rhodes." Tony said.
Tony shoots his previously destroyed car out of the way. Rhodey asks if Tony needs him to do anything else.
Tony puts the face plate down and tells him to keep the skies clear. Then flies through the hole in the roof that he made earlier.
"You never fixed it... or covered it or anything. What if it rained?" Bruce asked.
"It didn't rain." Tony said.
Rhodey takes notice of another suit. "Next time baby."
"I mean, you did technically get to use one, even if it wasn't in the way I wanted you to at first." Tony said.
Natasha smirked, remembering what happened when Rhodey first used the suit.
Pepper, Coulson and the other four SHIELD agents are seen walking through sector 16 when they come across the mark 1 suit. Coulson says Pepper was right about Obadiah building a suit.
"Well he is, but it isn't that one that's for sure." Rhodey said.
Pepper says she thought it would be bigger.
"That's because it is." Tony said tightly.
Pepper walks away and notices a bunch of cables hanging from the ceiling. One of the agents notices blueprints on a computer. Pepper is walking through a bunch of chains. Behind the chains she sees two glowing blue eyes, the eyes move up higher. She screams and runs.
"Oh God!" Tony yelled, and grabbed Pepper's arm.
The agents all start shooting at Obadiah who swipes them away and continues chasing Pepper.
Tony is flying to the factory. He asks JARVIS how the mark 1 chest piece will hold up.
"Probably not well." Shuri said.
JARVIS says that the suit has 48% power and its failing, he tells Tony that the mark 1 chest piece wasn't designed for sustained flight.
"How many more things are going to go wrong." Bruce said, exasperated.
Tony says to keep him posted and calls out to Pepper.
Pepper asks if he's okay and then says that Obadiah's gone insane and that he built a suit.
Obadiah comes up through the ground and asks Pepper where she's going, then says her services aren't required any longer.
"If he hurts her, so help me, I will-" Rhodey said in a warning tone.
"You'll turn this car around?" Ned asked.
Clint and Scott snickered a bit, that was a line they used on their kids a few times.
Tony comes into view then tackles Obadiah into the ground. A bunch of car crashes occur. Obadiah picks one of them up. Tony tells him to put them down.
Obadiah says its collateral damage.
"No, you just picked them up!" Clint yells.
Tony tells JARVIS to divert chest power to RT. Then he shoots a repulsor beam out of his chest. Obadiah drops the car and falls over, Tony catches the car.
JARVIS says the power has been reduced to 19%.
"Uh... well that's definitely not good." Peter said. "Quite the opposite of-of good actually... this is very bad."
The lady driving the car slams on the breaks. Tony gets stuck underneath the car, then lifts it off of himself. Obadiah gets up and jumps over to Tony, he rips someone off of a motor cycle and hits Tony with it.
"Rude. Can we not obstruct traffic please? Thank you." Ned said.
Obadiah says that he's been holding Tony up for 30 years, and that he built the company from nothing.
"That's not true." Steve said, slowly.
"He's insane Steve, nothing he say's is going to make sense." Natasha said.
He picks Tony back up and says nothing will stand in his way, Tony least of all. He throws Tony into a semi-truck then blows the truck up.
Rhodey gasped. Forgetting, for a second, that his friend was 100% fine and right next to him.
Tony starts falling but catches himself. Obadiah says Tony's upgrades are impressive and that he's made some upgrades of his own. Then he starts flying.
"His suit can fly? Okay." Quill said, voice going up slightly in pitch.
Tony tells JARVIS to take him to maximum altitude and starts flying higher.
"What are you planning?" Bruce asked.
"You'll see." Tony responded.
JARVIS says that the odds of reaching it are low with only 15% power remaining.
Tony says he knows the math and tells JARVIS to do it anyway.
"Oh my god, Tony, you're crazy." Rhodey said.
"Yep. Crazy is actually my middle name." Tony said.
"I'd actually believe you if I didn't know that your middle name is Edward." Rhodey responded.
At the military base a soldier notices that the bogey is back and says to get major Allen and to scramble the jets.
Rhodey says that that wont be necessary because its just a training exercise.
"Well, at least one thing went right." Scott mumbled.
"But in this case it is very obvious that this is not a training exercise." Clint said.
Tony keeps flying up as JARVIS tells him he's losing power.
Obadiah's suit is starting to acquire a thin layer of ice.
"The icing problem." Bruce realizes.
"The icing problem." Tony said.
JARVIS says there's 7% power left.
Tony says to leave it on the screen and stop telling him.
"Don't be so mean to him." Shuri lectured.
Obadiah reaches up to grab Tony's leg. He says Tony had a great idea but his suit is more advanced.
Tony asked how he solved the icing problem.
"Did he even test his suit before this or...?" Peter asked.
"I'm gonna guess that he didn't think to run tests. Definitely hurt him in the wrong one. Always test your inventions, people!" Shuri said.
Obadiah asks about the icing problem. his suit starts to shut down.
Tony tells him that he should look into it then knocks Obadiah on the head.
"Funnily enough, that didn't kill him." Tony said.
"How!?"
JARVIS says that there's 2% power left. Tony starts falling, catching himself every few seconds.
"Well, it held on as long as it could." Tony sighed.
JARVIS tells him that he's running on emergency backup power. Tony lands on the roof of his factory and calls out to Pepper.
Pepper asks if he's okay.
"That's a relative question." Tony said.
"It's a yes or no question." Pepper corrected.
Tony says that he's almost out of power and that he needs to get out of the suit and starts to dismantle the it. Obadiah appears behind him.
"Oh come on!" Clint shouted.
He raises his arm to punch him but Tony ducks, then holds out his hand to shoot at him, only to realize the gauntlet isn't there. Obadiah smacks him and he goes flying. Tony runs toward Obadiah and punches him, Obadiah starts squeezing him.
"Ouch." Rhodey hissed in sympathy.
Ton asks for a weapons status.
JARVIS says that missiles and repulsors are offline.
"Isn't that just great?" Clint asked, sarcastically.
Tony starts shooting flares. Obadiah drops him.
Obadiah says that was clever.
Tony is now hiding behind something. He quietly calls for Pepper and says that they have to overload the reactor and blast the roof.
"Oh my God." Quill groaned.
Pepper asks how he's going to do that.
"Well..." Tony said.
Tony tells her that she's going to do it. He tells her to go to the central console and open all of the circuits. He says he'll let her know when he's clear of the roof and when he is She'll hit the bypass button and it'll fry everything.
"Seems extreme." Bucky said.
Tony reminds her to make sure he clears the roof, and that he'll buy her some time. Tony moves from his hiding spot. Pepper starts pulling all of the switches.
"That's a lot of switches." Scott commented. "That's gonna take forever."
Tony jumps on Obadiah's back and pulls something off of his suit, saying that it looks important. Obadiah's screen goes blank, he throws Tony onto the ceiling above the arc reactor.
"Uh-Oh." Thor said, hoping his teammate would get off of the roof before Pepper pulled the switch.
Obadiah says that he's never had a taste for this kind of thing and says he's really enjoying the suit. He then says that Tony's outdone himself and that he's made Howard proud.
Tony cringed at the screen. "Why does he always have to mention your father?" Clint asked.
"Is he like manipulating you?" Scott asked.
Tony tries to stand up. Pepper says that she's ready and tells Tony to get off the roof.
Obadiah shoots out all the glass, Tony falls through and hangs onto the metal bar.
Obadiah points out the irony of Tony trying to rid the world of weapons but he's gave it the best one, and says he's going to kill Tony with it.
"I wasn't trying to rid the world of weapons. I was trying to rectify a grave mistake." Tony said.
He tries to shoot Tony and misses, noting that Tony ripped his targeting system out.
Tony tells Pepper to hit the button.
"You'll die if she does!" Rhodey shouted.
Pepper tells him he told her not to.
Obadiah tells Tony to hold still and tries to shoot him, but misses again.
Tony tells Pepper to hit the button.
Pepper tells him that he'll die.
Rhodey, Pepper and Happy all tensed even though they knew Tony would walk away from this relatively okay.
Obadiah shoots again. Tony falls, now holding onto the bar with 1 hand.
Tony says to push the button. Pepper pushes the button and runs for cover. The explosion throws Tony to the other end of the roof, Obadiah gets electrocuted.
"Well... at least he's dealt with." Nebula said.
The explosion shoots a beam into the sky, causing a lot of building to lose power.
"That is what I call an explosion." Rocket said. People subtly moved away from him. "What?" He asked.
"I am groot."
"What do you mean I cant say things like that."
"I am groot."
"I don't care if it makes people uncomfortable."
Obadiah falls into the arc reactor and it blows up. Tony is lying on the roof with his eyes closed, the arc reactor is flickering.
"You seem to have a thing for suicidal moves, Tony." Steve said, worriedly.
Rhodey talks to a group of reporters. He says they've received the official statement of what happened at Stark Industries the previous night. He says that there are unconfirmed reports of a robotic prototype malfunctioning and causing damage to the arc reactor.
"Is this that other press conference?" Natasha asked.
"I don't know why you're asking, but yes." Tony answered.
The camera shows Tony reading a newspaper while Pepper takes a bandage off of his nose. He makes a comment about the 'Iron Man' name being catchy, and says that isn't technically accurate because the suit is a gold-titanium alloy but the imagery is evocative.
"Well what were they supposed to call you?" Clint asked. "Gold-Titanium Alloy Man?"
"Yeah, Gold-Titanium Alloy Man. My favorite superhero." Peter said. "Doesn't really roll off the tongue very well."
Coulson walks up to him and hands him a stack of cards and tells Tony its his alibi, he says that Tony was on a yacht when the fight last night occurred. He says that they have papers that say he was in Avalon all night with statements from 50 guests.
"50 guests? That's a lot of people." May said.
"Have you seen the parties that he used to throw? 50 is nothing." Rhodey said. "It's a small get-together."
Tony says they should say that it was him and Pepper on the island.
Shuri sighed. They were being so obvious and so oblivious at the same time!
Coulson says his story is the one that happened and tells Tony to read it word for word.
"He didn't do that did he?" Scott asked. Coulson let out a frustrated sigh, no one ever listens to him.
Tony starts flipping through the cards and notes that there isn't anything about Obadiah.
Coulson says that its being handled his story is that he's on vacation and that small aircraft have poor safety records.
Tony asks about the bodyguard cover story and says its flimsy.
"Why can't you just let it go?" Maria asked.
"Well, that part was flimsy, that Vanity Fair reporter, Christine, refused to believe it." Tony said, trying to justify his line of thinking.
Coulson says that this isn't his first time doing this and tells Tony to stick to the official statement.
"Wish you would have done what I asked you to." Coulson said.
Well... you know me." Tony said.
"Unfortunately I do."
He starts to walk away. Pepper walks after him and says she wants to thank him for all of his help.
Coulson says that that's what they do and that they'll be hearing from them.
Pepper starts trying to recite the name of the organization.
Coulson says to call them SHIELD.
"There it is." Clint said with a smile.
"You guys should get like cards... business cards." Peter suggested.
Pepper says to get the show on the road and picks up Tony's jacket.
Tony says the story isn't bad and even he doesn't think he's Iron Man.
Pepper says he isn't.
"But he is though." Peter said.
Tony says he is.
Pepper says he isn't.
"What do you mean?" Tony asked.
Tony says that is he was Iron Man he'd have a girlfriend who knew his identity and she'd always be worrying that he was going to die but she'd also be proud of the man he'd become.
"I am proud of you, Tony." Pepper said, seriously. Tony smiled.
He says that this girlfriend would be conflicted but that would only make her more attracted to him. Then asks Pepper if she still thinks about that night
Pepper asks if he means the night they danced and went up to the roof and he went downstairs to get drinks and then left her alone.
"Yep there it is." Natasha said, laughing slightly.
Then asks if that would be all.
Tony says that it will be all.
"Well, at least now I know why you left." Pepper sighed.
Rhodey says that Tony has prepared a statement and that there will be no questions.
Tony thanks him and turns to the audience saying that it's been a while since he was in front of them and that he's stick to the cards.
"Which you didn't." Rhodey sighed.
Tony says that there's been speculation that he was involved with the events from the freeway and the rooftop.
Christine interrupts buy asking Tony if he expects them to believe that a bodyguard conveniently appeared.
Everyone groaned, this lady was getting on their nerves. "See! She didn't even let me start before she called it out for being fake." Tony complained.
Tony says he knows its confusing, but that its one thing to question the story and another to make accusations and insinuate that he's a superhero.
"Which she actually didn't do." Natasha said.
Christine says she never said he was a superhero.
Tony says that that's good because it would be outlandish and says that he isn't the hero type.
Steve cringed, being reminded of what he said on the heli-carrier. 'you know you may not be a threat but you better stop pretending to be a hero.'
He says he has a list of character defects and he made a lot of public mistakes.
Rhodey comes up behind him and tells him to stick to the cards.
"I wish you would've stuck to the cards." Fury sighed.
"Can't take it back now." Tony said.
Tony says that the truth is that he is Iron Man.
The room erupts in chaos.
"Would've made it a lot easier if you just stuck to the cards." Fury said.
"Well I'm sorry." Tony said, not sounding sorry at all.
Tony enters his house and calls for JARVIS.
Fury, who is also in Tony's house, quotes the ending sentence of Tony's speech and asks of Tony thinks he's the only superhero in the world.
"How the heck did you get into his house?" Ned asked, but Fury didn't answer. Typical.
Fury tells Tony that he's become a part of something larger and he doesn't know it.
Tony asks Fury who he is.
Fury tells him and says that he's the director of SHIELD and that he's here to talk to him about the Avengers Initiative.
"Well-" Tony said. "That was uh, yeah."
