A vehicle driving in the middle of the arctic. A man walks up to them waving his hand, signalling them. Two men step out of the car.
The man asks if they're from washington.
One of the men asks if he gets any visitors.
The other asks how long he's been there.
The man says he's been there since that morning and that a Russian oil team gave called it in 18 hours ago.
The man asks how no one spotted it earlier.
"What are they talking about. What is it?" Mantis.
One of them says that it isn't surprising because the landscapes always changing. He then asks what the thing is.
The man says he doesn't know but he thinks it's a weather balloon.
"Why do I get the feeling that it isn't?" Ned asked.
The man says that they don't have the equipment for a job like this.
Another asks how long before they can crane it out.
The man says that they're going to need one hell of a crane. The camera pans to show a plane.
"Wait, is this when they found me?" Steve asked.
"It is." Fury responded.
"Found you? What do you mean found you?" Mantis asked.
"Oh, uh-" Steve went to reply but Natasha cut him off.
"You will most likely find out." She said.
A laser is shown cutting through a part of the plane, after a moment a piece of the plane falls through the hole it made. A man lowers himself through another follows, they start looking around. One of them bends down beside something, he brushes the snow off. A man asks what it is.
The other tells him to get him a line to the colonel.
The other says that its 3am.
The man says he doesn't care what time it is because the man they found waited long enough.
"How long has it been since..." Peggy trailed off.
"Almost 70 years." Peggy, Howard and everyone who didn't know about Steve looked shocked.
'Tonsberg Norway, March 1942' appears on the screen. A man runs through the street and into a building. Another man walks down the stairs, they start speaking in Norwegian. Jan says that they have come for it.
The other man says that they have before.
Jan says that they haven't like they were now.
The man says that they'll never find it.
"What are they looking for?" Shuri asked.
"The tesseract." Steve said.
The building starts shaking. The wall with the door falls down, crushing Jan. A black car with a hydra hood ornament pulls up beside a tank.
"Is that-" Clint starts to ask.
"The symbol for Hydra? Yes." Steve answered. Bucky grimaced and glared at the screen.
A man steps out of the car. The tower keeper is now on the floor, surrounded by soldiers. Other soldiers are trying to open a large box. A Hydra officer tells him to open it quickly. Schmidt stands in the doorway, he starts walking over the rubble.
Steve and Bucky gave Schmidt a death glare. "Who's that?" Scott asked.
"His name is Johann Schmidt, he was Dr Erskine's first- he volunteered for Erskine's experiments, like I did, He was the leader of Hydra for a while then he used the tesseract and sent himself off into space." Steve explained. "God only knows where he ended up." He added as an afterthought.
Schmidt tells them that it took a while to find the place, he tells the soldiers to help the tower keeper up. He tells the tower keeper that he is a man of great vision and that they are alike in that respect.
"That man is nothing like you." Steve said.
The tower keeper says that he isn't anything like Schmidt.
Schmidt says that what people see as a superstition they know is science.
The twere keeper says that what schmidt is looking for is just a legend.
Schmidt asks him why he's trying so hard to hide it.
"Schmidt has him there, if it weren't real he wouldn't try so hard to hide it." Gamora said.
He opens a tomb, inside is a skeleton lying with a cube in its hand and a sword on its legs, he picks the cube up. Schmidt says that the tesseract was the jewel of Odin's treasure room. He smashes it on the ground.
"Why did he do that?" Drax asked.
"It was a fake." Steve said.
Schmidt says it isn't something one would burry.
The tower keeper says he can't help him.
Schmidt says that he can help his village and that he must have some friends or grandchildren and that he has no need for them to die.
"He's an asshole." Scott whispered.
"Of course he is Scott." Hank said.
The tank outside points its gun toward the building. Schmidt turns toward an engraving of a tree on the wall and walks over to it and notes it as Yggdrasil. He presses a button on the tree and it unlocks something, he pulls the box out and opens it, revealing the tesseract and says Hitler is digging for trinkets in the desert.
"What's he planning on doing with that?" Rocket asked.
"He's gonna use it to make weapons." Steve said, glaring at Fury for extra measure.
The tower keeper says that the tesseract isn't for the eyes of ordinary men.
Schmidt says to give the order to fire.
The tower keeper says that Schmidt can't control the tesseracts power.
"Listen to the poor man." Shuri said.
Schmidt says he already has and kills the tower keeper.
A few gasps were heard. "What does he mean by that?" Ned asked.
New York in an enrollment facility, two men are reading newspapers. A man is calling out names. Steve says a lot of guys are being killed overseas.
The man calls his name. Steve lowers the newspaper and stands up.
"That's what you used to look like!?" All of the avengers shouted.
"That serum did a lot for you." Thor said. Steve nodded wordlessly.
The guy next to him asks if it makes him think twice about enlisting.
Steve says it doesn't.
"If anything it made me want to more." Steve said.
Steve walks over to the desk. The doctor asks him how his father died.
Steve says he died because of mustard gas and that he was with the 107th and he asks if he could be assigned there.
The doctor asks about Steve's mom.
Steve tells him that she died because of tuberculosis.
"It probably means nothing now but I'm sorry for your losses." Bruce said.
The doctor looks at a paper, which has a long list of Steve's health issues.
"Geez it's a miracle you could still function properly." Howard said.
Steve asks the doctor to give him a chance.
The doctor says that he'd be ineligible on just his asthma.
Steve asks if there's anything he could do.
The doctor says that he's saving Steve's life. He stamps the paper '4F'.
"What does that stamp mean?" Thor asked.
"It means your unfit for the military, usually for medical issues." Bucky answered.
A swastika flag is waving, on a screen in a movie theater. The narrator says that war is ravaging Europe but help is coming. He says that young able bodied men are lining up to serve the country.
The film shows a boy collecting metal The narrator says that even he is doing his part. A man says to just play the movie.
"That's rude." Ned said.
Steve tells the man to show some respect.
The narrator says that brave men are showing the axis powers that the price of freedom is never too high.
The man says to play the cartoon.
Steve tells him to shut up.
"You are just asking to get beat up." Rocket said. Steve groaned.
The guy gets up and looks at Steve.
"Here we go." Bucky sighed.
Steve and the man are in an alley. The man punches Steve, Steve gets up. The man punches Steve again, Steve stands up, holding the lid to a trash can. The man rips the lid out of Steve's hands and punches him a third time. The man tells Steve that he doesn't know when to quit.
Steve says he could do this all day.
"That doesn't always mean you should." Sam said.
Steve tries to punch him, the man grabs Steve's fist and punches him. Bucky grabbed the mans arm and tells him to pick on someone his own size then punches the man, and kicks him away.
"Ah, yes my knight in army greens." Steve joked.
Bucky says he sometimes thinks that Steve likes getting punched.
Steve says he had the guy on the ropes.
"I'm sure you did." Natasha joked.
Bucky picks Steve's enlistment up from the ground and asks how many times it is.
"You've tried to enlist multiple times?" Scott asked. Steve nodded stiffly.
Bucky notices Steve put that he was from paramus and tells him that its illegal to lie on his enlistment from.
"Who would have thought America's golden boy would have broken a law." Tony joked.
"It was for a good cause." Steve said.
Bucky asks if Steve seriously wrote down that he was from New Jersey.
"Ew, New Jersey." Ned said, feigning disgust. The rest of the New Yorkers laughed.
Steve asks if Bucky got his orders.
Bucky says he is a sergeant in the 107th infantry and that he's shipping out for England the next morning.
Steve says he should be going too.
Bucky says its his last night in the states and says the Steve needs to get cleaned up.
Steve asks where they're going. Bucky says they're going to the future.
"Oh the irony." Steve said. Bucky let out a small laugh.
Bucky hands him a newspaper that reads 'World Exposition of Tomorrow, 1943.'
"Must be some future." Clint commented.
Steve and Bucky are shown walking in front of a giant wire framed globe. Bucky says that Steve is about to be the most eligible man in New York and says that there are three and a half million women there.
"Are you trying to get him a date?" May asked.
"I was trying to get him to see that it wouldn't be so bad if he'd stayed home, buy also, yeah." Bucky answered.
Steve says that he'd settle for one. Bucky says that he took care of that. He waves to two girls standing by a statue.
"You are a good friend." Clint said, Natasha hit him.
Connie greets him.
Steve asks Bucky what he told her about him.
Bucky says he only told her the good stuff. They walk over to the girls.
An announcer welcomes everyone to the 'World of Tomorrow.'
Connie says that its starting and the four of them walk over to a stage. Four women are standing in front of a red car.
Another walks onto the stage and introduces Howard. Howard walks onto the stage.
"Ah, the good old days." Howard says. "What I would give to be that young again." He adds.
Howard walks on the stage and kisses the woman.
Peggy scoffs and rolls her eyes, a hint of a fond smile on her face.
"Now I know where you get your showmanship from." Rhodey said, remembering the opening night of the Expo.
The women walk around to the back of the car. Howard greets the audience and tells them that in a few years cars won't even need to touch the ground. The girls take the tires off of the car. howard says that the'll be able to do it with Stark robotic reversion technology.
"Oh will we?" Bucky asked with a small smile, remembering what happened to the car. Him, Steve and Peggy laughed.
Howard starts turning dials on the control panel next to him. The car starts to levitate.
"Impressive." Rocket said. "For an Earthling." He added under his breath.
The car falls.
A few people started giggling.
Howard says that he did say a few years.
"Nice save." Sam said.
Steve turns around to see a poster with uncle Sam on it that reads: 'I want you for the US army. Enlist now.' Bucky turns around and notices that Steve isn't there anymore.
"Where did you run off too?" Scott asked.
A man steps on a platform and the wall in front of him shows his face on a soldiers body. The woman next to him pulls him away and tells him to come on and calls him 'soldier.' Steve steps up on the platform but his head doesn't reach where it's supposed to.
"Oof."
Bucky comes up behind him and hits him on the shoulder and says he's missing the point of a double date and says that they're going dancing.
Steve tells Bucky do go ahead and that he'll catch up.
Bucky asks if he's going to enlist again.
"Yep."
Steve says he's going to try his luck.
Bucky rhetorically asks if he's going to be Steve from Ohio this time and says that they'll catch him, or, worse, they'll take him.
"In the 40s, in America, is going into the army as a sickly person actually worse than going to prison?" Quill asked.
"What kind of prisons have you been too?" Scott asked.
"Space prisons." Quill answered.
Steve says that he knows Bucky doesn't think he can do this.
"Well to be fair..." Bucky started.
Bucky tells him that it isn't a back alley its a war.
Steve says he knows.
"Something tells me you didn't really see a difference." May said.
Bucky asks him why he wants to fight so bad when there are other jobs he could do.
Steve asks if he's going to collect scrap metal.
"You could have been a medic. Always important." Hank said.
Bucky says he should do that.
"Protective best friend mode: Activated." Shuri said.
Steve asks if he would do it with his little red wagon.
"Don't do Timmy dirty like that." Peter said.
Bucky asks him why he won't.
Steve says that he won't sit in a factory.
"He was just trying to keep you safe, Steve." Natasha sighed.
Steve says that there are men laying down their lives and that he doesn't have the right to do less than them.
"Its not doing less, it's just doing something different." Carol said. "Both jobs are important."
He tells Bucky that he doesn't understand that it isn't about him.
Bucky, disbelievingly, says that Steve has nothing to prove.
"Well when you put it like that..." Ned said.
Connie asks Bucky of they're still going dancing.
Bucky says that they are before he turns to Steve and tells him not to do anything stupid until he returns.
Steve asks how he can if Bucky's taking all of the stupid with him.
"And what did you do as soon as I left? Something stupid." Bucky said.
Bucky calls Steve a punk.
Steve calls Bucky a jerk and tells him to be careful. Bucky starts walking away. Steve tells him not to win the war until he gets there.
Steve walks further into the building. Dr Erskine follows him.
"Who's that guy and why is he following you?" Gamora asked.
"That's Dr. Erskine." Steve answered.
Steve is now sitting on an observation table, a Doctor is folding clothes, a Nurse walks into the room and whispers something to the Doctor. The doctor tells him to wait.
Steve asks if somethings wrong.
The doctor tells him to wait and walks out of the room. Steve looks behind him at a sign that says 'Its illegal to lie on your enlistment form' then starts getting ready to leave.
"When you see more than once that you shouldn't do it, maybe you shouldn't do it." Sam said.
"Yeah, I know I could've gotten in serious trouble, but I didn't so win/win." Steve said.
An enlistment officer walks into the room and stands by the door. Dr. Erskine walks into the room a moment later. Then he pulls out a file and asks Steve if he wants to go overseas to kill Nazis.
"Blunt." Clint said.
Dr. Erskine introduces himself and says that he's from the Strategic Scientific Reserve.
"SSR, that's what it was called before SHIELD." Peggy said.
Steve introduces himself. Dr. Erskine walks over to the observation table and sets his file down. Steve asks him where he's from.
Dr. Erskine says that he's from Queens.
"Representation." Peter said quietly.
He says that before that he lived in Germany and asks if it troubles Steve.
Steve says it doesn't.
Dr. Erskine asks if Steve is from New Haven or Paramus, then says that Steve has tried 5 times.
"Five!?" Half the room asked.
Steve tells him that he might not have the right file.
Erskine says he isn't interested in the exams but he is interested in the 5 tries. He then asks Steve if he wants to kill Nazis.
"I think that's a trick question." Peter said.
"What do you mean?" Scott asked.
"Isn't it obvious this guy is testing him." Natasha answered.
Steve asks if he's being tested.
Erskine says he is.
"Still blunt." Scott said.
"Yeah, he was a very straightforward guy." Steve said.
Steve says that he doesn't want to kill anyone. He says he doesn't like bullies no matter where he's from.
"I think this goes a bit beyond bullying but I like the spirit." Shuri said.
Erskine says that there are a lot of big men fighting the war and maybe they could use a little guy. He says he can give Steve a chance.
"So he made you what you are now?" Quill asked.
"Essentially... yes." Steve answered.
Dr. Erskine steps out of the room, Steve follows and says he'll take the chance.
"No questions asked." Bucky said. Steve cringed a little.
Erskine asks Steve where he's really from.
Steve says he's from Brooklyn.
Erskine stamps his paper, and hands it back to him, then congratulates him and calls him soldier. Steve opens his folder to see a stamp that says 'IA'.
"Nice." Ned said.
Schmidt is walking in a lab, he asks Zola if he's ready.
Zola says that his machine requires delicate calibration and tells Schmidt to forgive him if he's coming off as overcautious.
"Caution is always a good thing." Shuri said.
Schmidt asks if Zola's certain that his conductors can withstand the energy surge for long enough then starts looking at mythology pictures and books.
"He was obsessed with it." Valkyrie noticed.
"Everyone though he was crazy for believing it existed, turns out he was right about one thing." Steve said.
Zola says that he isn't sure of anything and that the machine might not even work. Schmidt opens the box with the tesseract in it, takes it out and places it in the machine.
Dr. Zola turns the machine on and says that its stabilizing at 70% power.
Schmidt takes over the controls and says that he didn't come there for safety.
"That's a terrible idea." Tony said.
He turns up the controls to maximum power. Blue light starts pulsing throughout the machine. Zola asks what happened.
"Power. Power that he should not have." Gamora said.
Zola congratulates Zola on his work, he says that they might require some reinforcement.
Zola says that the energy they collected could power all of his designs and tells Schmidt that it will change the war.
"That is true." Rocket said.
Schmidt tells him that it will change the world.
"That is also true." Rocket said.
