Azura watched the monitor as Ratchet worked, and she realized that she has never asked if the autobots knew where the space bridge was. She had actually only assumed it was in space somewhere, not on the actual planet. And she was assuming that the ground bridge couldn't reach the space bridge because of it. She has been assuming the entire day without actually asking or overhearing where the space bridge could be. She knew it could have been the name of the bridge that made her think it was in space, not so much the range of the bridge.
"Um…question…" Azura began as she raised her hand. Ratchet glanced down at her when she began to speak. "Would the space bridge be on Earth, or in space?" The medic smirked almost immediately and she could see he was amused. "I had assumed because it was called a space bridge that it…um…is not on the planet…" She looked away shyly as she pressed her fingers together.
Ratchet was highly amused by the question, as was Optimus. "I guess the name does seem to suggest that the bridge is in space, but no. It is simply the range which the space bridge can reach. It can certainly be grounded to function and send anyone through to another part of the universe. But it certainly is not just going to be in space." He glanced back up at the screen. "I am trying to locate it while figuring out a plan to stop Megatron at the same time."
"Right…right…" Azura leaned against the railing as she thought about it. "What will you do when you find the space bridge? Apart from stopping Megatron of course."
"At this time, there are multiple possibilities, Azura. Stopping Megatron could involve terminating him, destroying his ship or even the space bridge itself in order to prevent certain destruction to this planet." She definitely would be fine with Megatron being terminated so she wouldn't have to face him, given the history. Optimus smiled at Azura as he continued to speak to her. "Until we know the location of the space bridge, we can only make small plans."
"I kind of understand why Azura wants to know though," Miko said as she walked over to stand next to Azura and lean over the railing, placing her elbows on the rail and resting her hands on her cheeks. "This is pretty serious business."
"It most certainly is, Miko," Optimus agreed gently. "We do appreciate that you are here to support us."
"Hooyah!" Miko exclaimed happily with a big smile.
Azura chuckled softly at the girl's response and glanced up at the monitor just as an image of something was brought up. It looked like a portal of some sort, and she assumed it was the space bridge. "Optimus, I've pinpointed the location of Megatron's space bridge. High in Earth's orbit." He glanced at Azura with a slight smile. "And it seems like you were right about the space bridge." She giggled at the medic in amusement.
"Out of our reach."
Miko frowned at Optimus's disappointed tone. "Okay, so you guys don't fly. But can't you just ground bridge there?" She gestured to the ground bridge as she spoke to the bots.
Ratchet seemed a little annoyed with Miko's remark, even though Azura also hoped it was possible. "The ground bridge has limited range. Stretched all the way into orbit its vortex could snap and scatter us to the stars."
"But…what choice do you have?" Azura asked in a quiet tone as Ratchet glanced at her. "If the ground bridge is your only way to get there, is it not worth the risk? I suppose you could weigh the options. The choice is risk being scattered across the stars, or definitely invite an invasion of undead Cybertronians to this planet."
"Azura is correct, Ratchet. It is a risk we must take to protect this planet." He turned to face the ground as he spoke. "And since Megatron is likely already in transit, we have no choice in the matter. Reaching the space bridge first is our only means of stopping him."
Just as Optimus finished speaking, Arcee's engine could be heard, along with a few beeps of her horn. However, as she rolled in, she had someone with her. Jack was sitting on the bike, and Azura gasped in pure happiness and jumped excitedly as Arcee came to a stop. She ran over to the stairs and raced down the stairs.
Jack got off and removed his helmet, looking up at everyone with a slightly shy expression. "Hey, guess who's back?" He smiled at them before noticing Azura running at him. "Woah, woah, hey…" He laughed when she threw her arms around him and hugged him happily. "Ugh…you have a strong grip, Azura…" He grimaced as her hug was very tight. "Can't breathe."
"Oh, sorry." She lets him go with a giggle. "I'm just happy you're back. And…" She glanced up at Arcee who was watching with a smile. "Seems like you were the one who was able to convince Jack to come back, huh? Good job."
Optimus smiled at Azura before looking at the autobots. "Autobots, prepare for departure," He ordered in a stern voice.
Arcee frowned in curiosity while Jack frowned as he realized something was happening. "Where to?" She glanced at Ratchet. "You figured out a plan while I was out for a drive."
"They sure did," Miko responded with a smile on her face. "The final frontier."
"Space?" Jack was surprised and glanced at Azura and the autobots in confusion. "I-I thought they didn't have anyway to get there."
"They don't," Raf responded in an uncertain tone as Bee lowered him to the ground carefully. "Really…" He shrugged a little as he spoke.
"It's a risk they're taking," Azura said softly, looking up at Optimus with a worried expression. "I just hope that the vortex will not malfunction."
With this news, Jack looked up at Arcee with an awkward expression. "Um, be seeing you." She shrugged with a smirk and walked over to Optimus. He looked at Azura and placed a hand on her shoulder. "I guess we are going to have to just hope they succeed."
Azura just nodded as Ratchet activated the ground bridge. She walked over to Optimus as she overheard Raf tell Bee to be careful. Optimus looked down her as she looked up at him. "Make sure you do come back, Optimus. I don't want to lose another family member."
He smiled at her kindly. "I will make that promise to you, Azura."
Miko was grinning as she walked over to Bulkhead and looked up at him. "I'm so jealous!"
The wrecker looked down at her in amusement. "Don't even think about following me."
Azura watched Bulkhead walked towards Optimus, ready to leave the base. She was feeling very nervous at the moment as she did not know what would happen. Her thoughts were interrupted by Ratchet when he spoke up. "Optimus, if you leave me stranded on a planet teaming with humans, I will never forgive you."
"At least you'll have Azura here to show you all the good of this planet," Optimus responded in an amused tone. "Until we meet again old friend." She watched as his mask slides up and she tensed, knowing they were about to leave. "Autobots, roll out!"
The four autobots transform before they speed into the vortex. Azura walked forward a little, watching the autobots disappear as they go through the bridge. She was still nervous even if Optimus promised to return to her. Anything could happen and she knew it. She hoped for a good result today, and that Megatron's army will be defeated…and maybe even the war itself. But that might be a little too much to hope for.
"The autobots made through safely." She turned as Ratchet spoke up. His optics were full of sympathy as he knew that Azura was worried about her carrier. "For the time being, Azura, things seem to be going fine." She was happy about that and she walked over to the platform quickly to walk up the stairs. "I'll open the communication link so we can hear what is happening on their end."
"You can do that even though they're high in orbit?" Azura asked hopefully, and the bot nodded affirmatively. She felt a sense of relief hearing that. "That's wonderful to hear, Ratchet. That makes me feel a little better."
"We all have someone on the other side of the ground bridge, Azura. Everything will be fine." Jack placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed gently. "I am worried about them too. But Optimus will be back." She glanced at him and smiled. "And I just left my job to be here, so I at least will be supporting them in some way."
Azura raised an eyebrow at him. "Won't that cause issues for your work?"
He shrugged. "I am not going to discuss that right now." His tone sounded like something had happened and she was curious. "I don't think I would have actually come back here otherwise…Arcee was not the reason why I even came back."
"I see." Azura was curious, but she did not pry. "Regardless, it is good to have you back. It wasn't the same without you." He smiled at her and she looked up at Ratchet. "At least if you end up stranded on this world, I can teach you all the good things about humans. They're not as bad as you think." The medic just glanced at her briefly, but said nothing and that made her giggle. "Besides, you do know they're not that bad."
"I guess not…and this world is a human world, so I am grateful I can live here," Ratchet responded slowly. "But I tend to find humans to be…I am not sure what the right word to say is." He glanced at Azura and he saw the children were looking at him curiously. He was silent for a moment before he huffed. "I never said humans are that terrible, Azura. I just find them to be a little annoying."
"I suppose that can be said for anything that is small," Azura said with a giggle.
She goes silent quickly when Arcee's voice can be heard through the com link. "Well, what are they waiting for?"
Azura wondered what she means by that. "Oh…Megatron's already there?"
"Seems like it," Jack comments in an uncertain tone. "And apparently doing nothing.
They get their answer as Optimus responds to Arcee's question after "It appears the decepticons have sustained serious damage to their interstellar navigation system."
"Huh, that's my handy work," Bulkhead said in surprise as he realized he had damaged the ship when he went to rescue Fowler.
"Great job, Bulkhead," Optimus compliments the wrecker. "Without the dish, Megatron will be unable to aim the space bridge at Cybertron."
"Don't the decepticons know where this own planet is?" Rafael asked curiously.
"Naturally," Ratchet responded bluntly to the boy and turned to look at him. "But Cybertron is many light years away. To reach their target, their aim must be astronomically precise."
Azura hummed thoughtfully. "And hyperdrive technology isn't a thing? Or is that just fictional?"
The bot looked at her for a moment as he processed what she had asked him before Ratchet responded. "The cons definitely possess capability of hyperdrive, of course, though we call it star drive. However, even at that speed, it would take many years for them to reach Cybertron. And Megatron would not likely have that kind of patience."
"But…he must have some other plan," Azura stated in confusion.
"If Megatron went to the trouble of rendezvousing with his space bridge, he must have an alternate targeting system," Optimus said thoughtfully as he had also heard what Azura had said. "A remote one."
Remote? There's a bunch of satellite dishes in Texas…though that would be risky.
Azura looked at Raf as he was typing on the computer looking it up. Ratchet huffed thoughtfully. "From what I know of Earth's technology, I doubt there exists a single radio telescope dish on this planet powerful enough to pinpoint Cybertron."
"Uhhh…" The medic looked at Azura when the girl began to say something. "Um…that might not be entirely correct. I think a bunch of satellites would work, and there are some in Texas…I think…"
"Azura would be right. Would a bunch of linked radio satellite dishes work?" Raf asked as he turned to look at the Ratchet. "Like the giant size array in Texas." Azura smiled when Raf confirmed where the satellite dishes were.
However, Ratchet seemed unhappy about this and snapped at the boy. "Zip, ep, ep, ep, ep! This is not child's play!" She frowned at the medic for his response, not appreciating his choice of words.
"That is good thinking from both Azura and Rafael," Optimus said calmly as he processed the information from the two of them. Ratchet seemed a little surprised that Optimus took the boy's word into consideration, even though Azura had said the same thing. "Ratchet, have Agent Fowler alert the array staff to the security hazard."
"You, soldier!" Fowler's voice suddenly spoke, startling Ratchet, Azura and the kids as they look over to see him looking at them with a frown, but he certainly wasn't all there and seemed to still be delusional. "You're out of uniform! Put on some pants."
Azura chuckled a little as the words from Fowler was rather amusing to her. "That maybe a challenge," Ratchet said to Optimus, unimpressed by what he had just heard from the human.
Raf turned with a frown and began typing. She watched him and saw he was trying to hack the array, and she didn't expect him to do that. "I can't get past the array's firewalls, they're too thick!" He slammed his fists on the desk lightly as he spoke in frustration.
"You actually think you could keep the decepticons out?" Ratchet asked in disbelief at the boy's attempt to hack the system.
"Maybe…" Raf looked at the screen uncertainly. "If I could get in."
Jack stepped forward with a thoughtful frown. "Wait, wait, wait, Raf what if we could get you all the way in? Like inside the building in?"
The boy smiled a little at Jack's suggestion. "I could log into their internal network on the other side of the firewall."
"The risk is too great," Optimus warned sternly as he listened to the suggestion by Jack. "The decepticons will be there. Perhaps even on site."
That was a good reason to not go, but Azura also knew taking risks was necessary. And it seemed like Jack agreed as he responded to the bot. "Optimus, with all due respect, you said it yourself. This is bigger than the safety of four humans."
Miko nodded in agreement. "Yeah, if we let the cons win, we're fragged along with everyone else on our planet."
Optimus seemed to contemplate what Miko and Jack had said. They both pointed out what needed to be done. Azura agreed with them too. Optimus could not be the only one to be relied upon keeping Megatron from enacting his plan. However, this was Raf's decision and Optimus knew that. "Raf?"
Azura couldn't help but smile. Even though he was her father, he definitely was protective of the human children. She definitely was not jealous at all as him being concerned about the kids was a good thing. After all, Ratchet hasn't exactly been very warm to Jack, Miko and Raf ever since they came to the base. She knew he wasn't thrilled about humans in the base, but Azura had guessed it was inevitable at some point.
"I want to give it a shot," Rafael said after thinking it over.
"I think it is worth trying," Azura smiled at the boy. "Otherwise, not doing nothing could mean we are handing the win over to Megatron." She looked at Ratchet as he begrudgingly put the coordinates into the bridge system. She looked back at Raf and placed a hand on his shoulder. "I guess Ratchet will man the ground bridge."
The medic looked at her curiously with a frown. He said nothing at first, but he widened his optics when Azura walked down the stairs with Jack, Miko and Raf, realizing she was going to try and go with them. "You should stay and assist me as well, Azura."
Azura looked at Ratchet in surprise. "With what exactly? I want to be there to help Raf, and I don't…"
"You heard what Optimus said," Ratchet interrupts Azura with a concerned expression. "The cons might be at the array. It would be better if you stay here."
She frowned at him and placed her hands on her hips. "I am not going to just sit around and do nothing while everyone else does something, Ratchet. I am not going to hide away while everyone else saves the world." She sighed as she walked towards the ground bridge. "I'll be fine."
Ratchet seemed unhappy about her response and simply rolled his optics. "Fine. But don't say I didn't warn you, Azura." He pulled the lever and activated the ground bridge. "Just know it isn't about you being left behind, and you really should know that."
Jack placed a hand on Azura's shoulder. "I'll make sure she comes back in one piece, Ratchet. Optimus won't need to worry." Azura and Ratchet looked at him in surprise, and Azura wondered if Jack's realized who Optimus is to her. "If not, then he can be mad about it."
"He'll be disappointed regardless." Ratchet waved his hand to them. "Just go before I change my mind and force Azura to stay here."
Azura just nodded as she walked towards the ground bridge. She knew she could be in trouble because she went with the kids, but she really didn't want to feel like she's doing nothing. She hoped it would be okay as they were just going to the array to hack it. She did worry about the array staff as she didn't know if they were even still alive. Nonetheless, she walked through the vortex with Jack, Miko and Raf hoping this would bring something good.
As she stepped through, she noticed Jack, Miko and Raf seemed to be queasy from the journey. She heard felt vibrations in her protoform, but she didn't feel that bad like them. "That's take some getting used to," Jack commented with a groan, placing his hand on his head and glancing at Azura. "Are you sure it is okay to be here?"
"It will be fine, Jack," Azura said with a sigh, looking ahead at the building. "We should head inside and see what we can do. But…" She glanced around at the building and saw some cameras. "Hopefully no one is manning the security system."
"Only one way to find out." Jack ran towards the side door with Miko and Raf. Azura followed them quickly. "This place seems to be a little too quiet, so hopefully we're just lucky. But we aren't agents like Fowler, so we could still get in trouble."
"We should just stay low," Raf suggests in a slightly nervous tone. "We can't get spotted or we'll never have a chance to try and stop Megatron."
"What should we do if this doesn't work?" Miko asked as they reached the side of the building.
"We tell the truth. Nothing to ashamed of." Jack stepped closer to the door carefully and opened it slowly, peering inside. "Hello?" He looked into the white hallway and saw there was no one inside. "It's clear. Let's find a computer for you to hook up to."
They enter the building as they carefully walk briskly down the hallway. They carefully opened the doors into different rooms to find a computer, and it didn't take long for Azura to notice that this place was empty. Jack commented on it too, and it was rather creepy that building was empty, and it made the building just feel like something was going to jump out at them. Nothing did, but it still gave them the creeps.
They soon found a room with a computer, and it was thankfully in sleep mode. Raf ran over to the desk and quickly got to work on breaking into the system. Miko checked to make sure the coast was clear before she closed the door. As far as they knew, the building was pretty much empty. It definitely was rather strange, but they had a job to do.
"Security sure is laxed in this place," She commented as she walked over to the desk.
"Probably because the staff are either dead or something else," Azura said bluntly with some nervousness. "I just hope we can achieve something today. I know you will do your best, Raf. That is all anyone can ask."
Raf was focused enough that he didn't respond to Azura, but he did hear her. It took a moment before he leaned back. "I'm in!" His smiled faded to a frown after a second. "And so are the decepticons."
"What?!" Jack exclaimed in shock.
"How can you tell?" Miko asked in disbelief that Raf was able to pick up that the cons were in the system.
"Schematics." Azura looked over Raf's shoulder and she saw the schematics herself, and she could tell these weren't human schematics. "With the same alien math we saw on their ship." He reached into his pocket and pulled out his USB. "But this time, I can download them." He put the USB into the computer and got to work on copying the schematics.
"It's gotta be the space bridge," Miko said with a frown as she watched the boy work.
"The decepticons are syncing it to the dishes," The boy explained as he typed on the keyboard. "But I can sync to them."
Jack was immediately worried about the idea that Raf had just said. "Will they know?"
"Even if the decepticons see that I'm in the system, they'll have no idea I'm in the house," Rafael responded confidently. He continued to work on syncing up to the system.
Azura couldn't help but get a bad feeling. She glanced around nervously, wondering if Raf had said something too soon. She began to think maybe it was a bad idea to come here with Jack, Miko and Raf, but she wanted to be there to support them. She stood close to the desk as Raf worked and she hoped that his plan would at least stall the decepticons from achieving their goal.
"Are you okay?" She jumped when Jack spoke to her and she saw he was looking at her worryingly. "Listen, if you want to go back to the base, we can hold the fort here."
"I'm fine!" She said immediately with a slightly higher pitched tone. Miko looked at her with a raised eyebrow at the tone of her voice. Azura coughed a little to clear her throat. "I'll be fine. Besides, I don't know if you have a way to communicate with Ratchet. I do, so you do need me here."
The boy was silent as he realized he and the other two had no communication with the bots. "Huh…that's something I failed to ask…but I guess it is a good thing you came along. But still…you seem to be nervous."
"Aren't you? I mean, this place seems too quiet." She glanced towards the door nervously before looking back at Jack. "I…hope that the staff are not piled up in a room somewhere…that would be terrifying to see."
"I hope that isn't the case either, Azura," Jack said gently as he walked around to her and placed his arm around her shoulders. "But as for it being too quiet, I think it would be better to not think too hard about it. Otherwise, it'll just be creepier for you."
She smiled at him, grateful for his support. "I guess you're right…still…just having a funny feeling."
The boy was about to say something when Raf spoke up. "They're locked onto Cybertron, but not for long." Azura watched as Raf frowned as he concentrated on stopping the cons.
"Are you even able to keep the satellites from pinpointing Cybertron permanently?" Azura asked curiously. "Like a program or something?"
"Even if I could do that, Azura, the technology and information the cons have is way more advanced than what I know," Raf responded calmly as he remained focused on the screen. "A firewall for our computers will be a thin wall for them to pull down."
"Yeah…you're probably right…" She sighed and rested her hand on her cheek as she watched Raf work. "They're probably already aware there's a problem."
Miko chuckled softly. "I hope they're losing their minds up there."
"I doubt it." Azura glanced around for a moment and noticed a camera in the corner. It was on and she felt the bad feeling grow even more.
"The dishes are heading back towards Cybertron. I'll just undo that again." She glanced back at Raf when he spoke and glanced back at the camera worryingly. She almost wanted to see if she could shut the dishes down with an electric pulse, but she didn't know if could do that yet.
"So what happens when the cons realize they're being punked?" Jack asked curiously. "They probably know there's a problem, but not yet know someone is on the other end stopping them using the satellites."
"It's only virtual combat, you know, like online gaming."
"Yeah, Jack. What are the cons gonna do? They're probably like a thousand miles away." Miko sounded extremely confident as she agreed with Rafael.
However, Azura noticed light filtering into the room and turned her head slightly only to widen her eyes when saw a familiar tentacle. "Or right here in this building!"
Jack and Miko turn to see the tentacle as it lunged at them. Azura managed to duck and roll to the side as it grabbed Jack and Miko. The tentacle moved around violently while Raf tried to remain focused on keeping the cons from locking on. Azura looked around to try and find something to use, only for a second tentacle arm to reach in. She tensed and widened her eyes as the tentacle was aimed at her.
She watched it lunge at her and she jumped over Soundwave's tentacle, rolling forward and glancing back as Jack and Miko were thrown at the wall. "Azura! Watch out!" Jack shouts and Azura gasped as the second tentacle lunged again.
She raced out of the room and skids to the left as she saw the tentacles came from the right. She ran as fast as she could down the hallway with Soundwave's tentacle following her. She knew now this was a bad idea as Soundwave knew who she was, and she knew that her appearance hasn't really changed that much since she met him three years ago. And this time, Cliffjumper wasn't there to get her out of this mess.
She turned left again and ducked into a bathroom, closing the door quickly, but not slamming it so Soundwave didn't hear the door. She watched the tentacle slither past the door, only to stop. He likely realized she wasn't in the hallway anymore. She quickly ran into a stall and closed the door of the cubicle before standing on the toilet lid, hoping that Soundwave wouldn't check.
But that hope was quickly dissolved as the door banged open and she covered her mouth to keep herself from screaming. She wasn't about to give herself away. However, she knew she couldn't let Soundwave just snatch her. She concentrated as best as she could and she began to feel the tingling of electricity running through her fingers and she stare at the door as she could hear the tentacle moving through the room and began to bang the doors open, checking each stall for her.
It didn't take long for the door to her cubicle slammed open and she screamed as the tentacle reached for her with its open claws. Soundwave grabbed her roughly and began to pull her out of the stall. As he did so, her hand barely touched one of the vanities just before he tried pulling her out of the bathroom and she shrieked as she felt a strong reaction as she touched water.
A strong shock jolted through her body and she slapped her hand on the tentacle, feeling it shudder violently and throw her into the wall from the surprise of the shock. And as she fell to the ground, Azura screamed as an electric wave burst from her body, causing the lights to dim suddenly and she looked up, noticing there was a burn mark on the tentacle as Soundwave pulled it out of the bathroom.
Her eyes were blurry and she realized they were also burning. She grimaced as tears fill her eyes from the stinging and she stood up slowly, taking deep breaths as she looked at her hands. Steam was rising from her hands and she realized they were hot. She looked at the door, worried Soundwave would come back, but she turned on the tap and splashed cold water on her face and arms, but she winced suddenly when she felt a sting on her back.
Shocked, she turned and lifts her shirt, finding she had a large, red burn mark on her back. She was shocked. She could see at this point her skin looked like actual hot metal. It was red and there was a hint of silver as well. She groaned as she knew she would be in trouble for that. She lowered her shirt as she felt much better and there was no more steam from her hands and arms, but she needed to leave.
"Azura!" Jack's voice shouts in the hallway as she heard footsteps racing her direction. "Are you okay?"
Azura walked out into the hallway just as Jack, Miko and Raf round the corner. "I'm okay…I just gave him the slip."
Jack sighed in relief as they stop in front of her. "That's a relief. I saw that he was trying to snatch you."
"Yeah, I know." She took a deep breath, closing her eyes from a moment to try ease the stinging. "Just so happens I met Soundwave three years ago." The children look at her in surprise. "And it wasn't great. I will say that Megatron has great interest in me should he ever get his hands on me."
Miko gave her a worried, disgusted expression. "Don't tell it's because he thinks you're beautiful or something?"
Jack gave the girl a frown while Azura grimaced. "I am afraid it is for a different reason…and you'll learn the reason sometime." She looked at Raf curiously. "What about the dishes?"
"Soundwave cut the hard-line before he left," The boy explained in a disappointed tone. "The dishes are locked onto Cybertron for good. There is nothing else we can do here. We'll have to go back to the base."
Disappointed to hear that, Azura was just glad they were okay. "At least you're unharmed." She grabbed out her phone and opened the com link. "Ratchet, I am afraid we'll have to come back to the base. Raf did what he could to stop the cons."
"Understood. I'll reopen the bridge at the same location as before," Ratchet responded affirmatively. "I trust that you are all unharmed."
"Yes, we are, Ratchet," Azura responded quickly as they make their way out of the building. She was still feeling uncomfortable. "We will be back at the base momentarily."
Ratchet did not respond and they soon leave the building, spotting the vortex ahead of them. Azura knew that she will need to admit she had been injured and targeted by Soundwave, but she would wait a bit later. She knew there was more important things to worry about. She glanced up at the sky, wondering how things were proceeding for Optimus before she stepped through the vortex to get back to the base. They could only be there to see what happens now.
