Owen studied the newest Rift arrival from a safe distance. Jack wanted him to examine it to make sure it was healthy, and also to determine what it should be fed. It was standard procedure, and a task he'd carried out numerous times in the past, so it shouldn't have been a problem, but the medic didn't like the way this thing was looking at him.
Jack sauntered over. "What's up? I thought you'd be done by now.
"Alien animals are so weird."
It was shaped approximately like a monkey, and of a similar size, but it was hairless, its dark red skin covered in scales, and its face was disturbingly humanoid. It reminded Owen uncomfortably of illustrations supposedly depicting the Devil. It even had horns, a pair of short, shiny black spikes jutting from its forehead above its deep-set black eyes.
"Most aliens would probably say the animals of earth are weird. We have giraffes, and elephants, and the duck billed platypus!"
"None of which look like demons," Owen pointed out.
"Depends on your religion. On Zilphra, the creatures of the underworld resemble ducks."
"Whatever. But I think I'll have Tosh check that the Rift doesn't run through Hell."
