"This is for you," Owen said when he arrived to pick Tosh up for their first date, handing her a small plant pot.
Tosh accepted it, studying the small, spiny plant curiously. "A cactus?"
Owen shrugged awkwardly. "Yeah, well, I was going to get you flowers, but then I remembered your allergies, so that didn't seem like a very good idea. And then I thought maybe I'd get you an orchid, but the last one of those I bought left its pot at night and tried to kill Ianto. That was probably a fluke, but I decided not to risk it; Torchwood's a magnet for anything weird. Besides, you're hardly ever home, and cacti don't take too much work…" He trailed off, blushing a bit. "Maybe not the most romantic idea."
"It's lovely, Owen. Thank you."
"You really like it? You're not just saying that?"
"I love it. Somehow it seems appropriate."
"Yeah, well, it's prickly, just like me."
"The spines are for defence," Tosh said, smiling. "Cacti are just trying to protect themselves from all the things that can hurt them."
"I can understand that."
"You don't have to protect yourself from me though."
Owen relaxed. "Yeah, I know."
