It was quite a day for Konoha's white fang. The best and the worst, he remarks as he thinks back to what had happened a couple of hours ago.
Sakumo was returning home after a tedious mission that lasted over a month. He was exhausted and was looking forward to cuddling with his wife to sleep.
As soon as he found his way to his house's front door, he heard his wife scream. He was certain that there weren't any enemies in his house, but took out his short sword just to be sure, afterall he was a man with many skilled enemies who would do anything to get back at him.
What he found was his wife on the kitchen floor in pain. She was going into labor. As he picked her up, he mentally notated to shift to somewhere with more neighbours, maybe near a clan to keep his wife and their child safe but that was for the future, for now, he needed to rush her to the hospital.
Sakumo had been standing there for maybe over an hour, he had lost track, for something, for someone to tell him they were fine. As he prayed to the sage of six paths, his prayers were answered. A doctor came up to him and asked "You're, Mr. Sakumo Hatake, right?" He nodded
"You can see your wife and child, both of them are fine"
He sighed with relief as he thanked the sage. He had to agree, this was the most stressful moment in his life, more than any mission the white fang has been on.
He ran towards where his wife was, this was to be the best day in his life.
He found his wife on a bed, holding their child. "It's a girl," she exclaimed in delight.
She beamed her usual smile at her husband as she gave their sleeping daughter to him. Though something was off, there was a hint of sadness in her eyes.
"Now hear me out Sakumo, take good care of her and yourself" His wife whispered.
"What are you talking about?"he questioned his wife with a smile. He would have understood her if he wasn't in a state of pure emotions.
She returned his smile with her own, now with tears in her eyes. "I'll see you two later….love you."
"Huh, what are you talking about Honey?"
"…………"
"WHAT ARE TALKING ABOUT MIO?"
"…………"
"Mio, wake up. Wake up. WAKE UP"
He heard the doors open behind his back and saw nurses rushing in. He looked at the nurses, as they started examining her. He did even notice a nurse coming up to him and taking the now crying newborn from his arms.
He was suddenly speechless. He could not even move. A few moments in, he saw one of the nurses run to the door. Here he was planning their future and the gods had taken the only person that was left in his life. The sage did not listen to his prayers.
"Now hear me out Sakumo, take good care of her and yourself." her words still ringing in his head.
The door opened for the second time and he saw the same doctor come in. He could not control his body and jumped at the doctor.
"You…..you said she was fine. WHY? WHY DID YOU say that? why did you say she was okay….?" his voice bottom out having know energy left out in him
"Mr. Hatake, it was her last wish, to say it to you personally. I am truly sorry. We tried everything we could." She said looking at the floor, not having the courage to face him.
A few hours had passed and it seemed like he got his body back. His thoughts were interrupted when a nurse came to him and called him.
"Mr. Hatake, I need you to fill this up." The nurse said while giving him a birth certificate. Tears started rolling down his face. This was the second certificate that he had to fill up today. He filled up everything except the name of the child and the slot for his wife's signature. He just could not do it.
"Mio, If the baby is a boy, let's name him Kakashi." Sakumo said, smiling. Though the smile was just a mask. The truth is, he didn't want to leave his wife alone.
"Sure, I like that name." His wife replied with her signature smile, which brightened the entire room. A moment passed as he looked at everything he had packed for the mission "Have you thought of a name for a girl?"
"Ah! Well….. not really, have you?"
"Hmm" she nodded her head "Yes."
"Then what are you waiting for, tell me."
"Sure. Okay," She took a long break. " The name is……"
"Is….?" Sakumo looked at her, fishing for an answer.
She smiled again and said, "I. am. not. going. to. tell. you."
Sakumo rolled his eyes in disbelief. "B-B-But why?" He waited for a few moments for a response. "Come on. Please just tell me."
"No no no no no, I am not going to. Now sakumo, you're getting late, you should get going." His wife shushed him away.
"But I might not see you for months. By then, the kid might be already born." He paused for a moment to think of something that would convince her. "Hey, I need to like the name too."
"That won't be necessary." She said firmly, nudging him towards the door.
"No no, you can't be seri-" He interrupted by the door, which was slammed on his face. "-ous"
He stood in front of the door for a few minutes and saw the door slightly open and a few things flying out through them. He started to gather his things off the ground. A few people passed by him and looked at him weirdly as they saw him picking his stuff up. 'Great! Now it looks like I got kicked out.' He finds a scroll that wasn't there when he packed. He opens it and starts reading it.
'Sakumo,
You should get going. The last time when Hokage-sama came to visit, he complained how late you were whenever he called you, after we got married. I don't want him to complain about it anymore. I know that this mission is going to be long and we won't be able to contact each other often, but let me have something for myself while you're away.
With love,
Mio'
He rolled the scroll up and stored it inside his summoning scroll. 'Why didn't she just say the name to me. It wouldn't take any time to do that. I don't even understand you, mio.' He looked back at his house and smiled 'You never fail to amaze me.'
'If only she had said it to me. If only….' Sakumo thought as tears flowed down his face
"Sakumo." A person called him, he was old and wore a white cloak with red flame like patterns on the end of it. He was holding a white hat to his chest. "I heard the news, how are you?"
"Hokage-sama, I am feeling better now." Sakumo said with a blank face.
"Good, very good. How is the child?" He asked while sitting down next to him
"She is fine. She is currently in the nursery."
"A girl, I see. Have you named her yet?"
"No, Hokage-sama." He said while looking at the form the nurse had given him. Tears threatening to fall from his eyes
"Do you have any names for her?" This question was Sakumo's breaking point. Tears started flowing rapidly down his face. He started wiping it aggressively with his already soaked sleeves of his uniform. The hokage took the form out of Sakumo's hands and placed it beside him, then he embraced him. Hiruzen understood Sakumo was trying his level best to hold himself together. He also understood that nins cannot be emotionless as they are taught, as emotions are what makes them human and stable, and it was best that Sakumo release his emotions instead of bottling them up inside him.
Sakumo cried for a few minutes until he got hold of himself. "No I haven't." He answered the question The Hokage had asked him previously. "I had only thought of a name for a boy."
"What is that name?" Hiruzen inquired.
"Kakashi, it's my father's name."
"I see. What about your mother's name?"
"I never knew her."
"Your wife, did she have any names?"
"She did. But I never knew what it was."
Both of them went quiet again. A chunin came up to them and Hiruzen excused himself to talk to the chunin.
"I need to leave now sakumo, something came up, I'll talk to you later." And Sakumo just nodded his head. "And one more thing Sakumo, I thought of a name for her, what about Kasumi?"
"I like it. Thank you Hokage-sama." Sakumo said with a smile that he had lost a few hours ago.
"Then I will see you later." And he left.
Sakumo took the forgotten into his hands and finally filled the name up. He walked towards the nurse and submitted it. After an hour he got all his papers and a nurse gave him his baby and he left.
A nurse had been watching him for the past couple of hours and saddened her. She saw the first form and how it was tear stained. She also saw that the form didn't have the mother's signature on it and understood what had happened. It was a pretty common occurrence but she could never fully stomach it. The only good thing about the form she could think of was the name on it.
'Kasumi Hatake, I like it.' and she moved on with her job.
