Caroline woke up that night and was at first surprised that she wasn't at home, instead she was at the Salvatore mansion and all her friends were with her but that didn't surprise her. What surprised her was that Klaus was also there and her head was on his lap as she woke up. He and the rest were still sleeping and she tried to gather quickly how come her friends had let Klaus stay over to begin with.
(Beginning of a flashback)
"Klaus, who invited you to this pre-funeral gathering?" Damon huffed at Klaus when Klaus had come in and sat down on the sofa in the Salvatore's living room like he was one of the gang.
"Klaus, what are you doing here?" Elena asked him.
"Klaus, maybe-"
Just then Caroline came into the room and declared, "Guys, stop, I invited him here."
Klaus smugly looked at Damon and he had only one question on his mind, "Why?"
"Because, I need him here. This one night ok, you can all retract your claws for one night, can't you?"
"Sure, Care, whatever you need," Elena told her.
"So what are we suppose to do or talk about while he's in the mix," Damon asked Caroline.
"We are going to talk about funeral prep. There are a lot of stuff to do. I have made a list. It would normally take five days to do everything that needs to be done, but we are going to do them in one tomorrow. Tonight, I'll give you the assignments and we'll discuss it. Alright?"
(The end of a flashback)
Caroline found Damon writing her mother eulogy in the kitchen.
Just as she was taking water from the tap, Damon started to say, "I think your mother's trying to teach me a lesson about my own mom. Was supposed to do the eulogy at her funeral, and I just-"
"We don't have to share. Today's going to be the hardest day of my life and I don't want to start it off by bonding with you….Thanks for the water."
Just as she was starting to be glad about that that particular conversation had finished and started to walk out of the kitchen, Damon told her, "Hey, blondie, Today isn't the worst day of your life. Today and tomorrow, it's a cakewalk. And there will be people day in and day out like they're afraid to leave you alone. The worst day? That's next week when there's nothing but quiet. Just a heads-up."
"Thanks for the tip," Caroline said not knowing what to think of it and quickly slipped out before Damon could say anything else.
Later that morning, when it was light out and they had all woken up to go do the tasks Caroline had assigned them with. Just as she was gathering her things after a quick shower, Klaus had somehow snuck behind her and gently touching her arm, he asked, "Sweetheart, are you ready?"
Caroline looked over her shoulder and put on a brave face, "Yeah, I'm done."
"Caroline, you don't have to pretend with me. I know how you must feel and casket shopping…that's pretty tough one. Maybe-"
"No, I can handle it, Klaus. Let's go," she pulled away from him and headed out the front door.
Caroline was currently in front of the church the funeral was being held and welcomed some of the guests when she suddenly noticed that Klaus who had only left her for a second to go to his car to fetch something, returned with someone Caroline at first didn't recognize from a far. As they got closer, it was only then that she remembered him, it was Klaus' brother Elijah who she didn't know had come back with Klaus.
"Caroline, I don't know if you two have officially met but this is my brother, Elijah." Klaus told her proudly as they got to her.
"I am so very sorry for you loss, Miss Forbes. Your mother was a vibrant woman. It's a huge loss for the whole community, I'm sure."
"Yes, thank you for your kind words, Elijah. And you can call me Caroline," she managed a half-smile and then added, "I didn't know you came back with your brother, Elijah?"
"He didn't actually, he just arrived today for a few days." Klaus explained.
"Unrelated to your mother's funeral." Elijah added.
"Okay, I think I have to go inside now. Klaus?"
"Be there in sec, love." Klaus said before giving her hand a little squeeze.
As Caroline turned to walk away, she noticed Elijah having the strangest look on his face.
Caroline knew she should go to inside to the front row and wait for him there but she wanted to know what it was all about. Why Elijah was there and why he had acted so strangely.
She hid in the corridor as Klaus and Elijah walked in side by side and although she couldn't hear it all, she heard enough.
"What business do you have accompanying the dead sheriff's daughter everywhere?" Elijah asked him.
"We're friends, her and I."
"One, you don't have friends, two, she's part of the group that has tried to kill you, kill us numerous times."
"You are right, I'm plotting my revenge against all of them."
"Using her to do it?"
"Yes, that's my new diabolical plan, brother."
Caroline couldn't or wouldn't hear anything else anymore. Her ears were ringing and if she was still human she would have collapsed. But as a vampire she collected herself and decided no crying before getting home after the funeral. She also decided not to attend the wake.
She got to the first row and sat down between Klaus and Stefan. She tried her best not let Klaus know that she was in on his plan. Klaus didn't seem to notice that she was dying inside.
After the funeral Klaus excused himself and said that there was something he and Elijah needed to take care of and that he would see her at the wake. He promised not to be late for it.
"I'm fine, Klaus, don't worry about me." Caroline told Klaus as she had already to numerous people that day.
"I do worry and I'll be as fast as I can, I promise."
Caroline nodded and Klaus gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and Caroline felt like she was going to throw up anytime now. Then he left and it was Elena's time to be assured that she was okay.
"Caroline, Stefan said you won't be coming to the wake. Do you think that's wise?" Elena said as she approached her.
"Yeah, it's fine. Elena. I just needed to get through today. That's all."
"I just don't think it's a good idea for you to be alone tonight, you know?"
"I think that's exactly what I need actually." Caroline hugged Elena as she said "Thank you for everything you did today, Elena. I'll never forget it."
"You're welcome,"
They both smiled as Caroline left the church and went straight home.
Klaus and Elijah were talking in Klaus' study in the Mikaelson mansion.
"So Marcel has been taken care of and you can return anytime to be the King of New Orleans. Just like you wanted to be." Elijah told Klaus.
Klaus didn't say anything, just stared at his whiskey glass.
"It's still what you want right, Niklaus. Or has that Forbes girl changed your priorities?"
"I love her, Elijah."
Elijah almost choked on his whiskey. Klaus hadn't been making it his habit to share his feelings about the women in his life with his siblings. So this declaration of love really surprised Elijah.
"No more silly jokes, I see." Elijah quipped.
"It just pains me to see her like this. I wish I could do something to make it better for her. Kill somebody. But no one was at fault with this." Klaus told Elijah ignoring his last sentence.
Caroline walked through the door and placed the flag on a table. Without turning around to see that Elena was behind her, she told her best friend, "I said I was fine, Elena."
"Well, I don't believe you. Care, what happened today?" Elena asked in concern and Caroline turned around to look at her in disbelief "Besides your mother, I mean."
"Klaus, he…"
"Klaus, of course. What did he do, Caroline?"
Caroline burst into tears, "He said to his brother that the whole reason he's been hanging out with me lately is that he wants to get revenge on all of us. He's working on some plan that involves getting close to me."
"Wow, that's a new low even for him."
Elena went to hug a crying Caroline and tried to comfort her, "It's going to be all right, Care."
Caroline collected herself quickly and turned emotionless. With a snap of her neck, Elena then fell to the ground.
"You don't know that, Elena."
