Spoilers for S2E1

Sally Tracy watched as a new normal began to establish itself between her oldest grandson and adopted granddaughter. She'd had such high hopes that they could sort themselves out and she guessed that they actually had.

The whole family watched them circle each other but as rescues continued to pour in and threats to both iR and TI the two began to work together better and better until they were almost back to normal.

Scott still complained about Kayo going off-comms and rushing in to stop the bad guys. Kayo still complained that iR needed to be more proactive in catching bad guys. They were as hot-headed as ever.

Sally smiled as she thought of their latest 'disagreement'. Yeah, things were definitely getting back to normal.

Three months from the day the Hood invaded their home and tried to kill them all, John received an emergency call from a geological survey team.

*'International Rescue, this is Ground Sonar D103. Can you hear us? Please – we need help!'*

It was Kayo's suggestion that they take all three ships – One, Two and Shadow – and she was gratified when Scott agreed with her immediately. When they saw the contraption they were up against she was so very glad they had all come.

When they saw the GDF ships being taken out by whatever those flying machines were…yeah, they were so pleased to have all three ships here.

Seeing Thunderbird Two getting attacked by those same mechanical drones had been shocking, and to see Virgil trying to fly his broken bird home was heart breaking. Hearing Scott telling him he might need to ditch Two in the ocean…she had shuddered at the thought. Losing a 'bird didn't bear thinking about, and she understood completely why Virgil had refused.

Neither she or Scott had the opportunity to dwell on that, though, as the machine and its driver The Mechanic kept them busy.

Kayo dropped Scott off so that he could begin to rescue the geology crew and landed Shadow on the back of the mining ship. While Scott dropped down into the crevasse she entered the belly of the beast to try and stop it, laying charges so that the machine would be stopped.

Soon both of them were fighting for their lives.

Thank goodness for Brains! With his knowledge of null point energy and his directions Kayo was able to disrupt the machine long enough for Scott to complete the rescue. It was only a temporary reprieve but it was just long enough.

*'Kayo! I could really use some more of what you did before.'

'I'm trying! This guy knows how to multitask!'*

She might not know how to control the computer but she knew engines and powerlines, and within short order the power had been pulled.

As she disconnected the Mechanic from the machine Kayo couldn't help but gasp at how close they'd come – how close *she'd* come – to losing Scott. He was on the floor and the giant grinding wheel was paused right above him. But she had no time to process that as the Mechanic pressed something and John's voice interrupted their conversation.

*'Kayo – get out of there now!'*

She barely made it to Shadow, and Scott barely made it to One with the rescuees, before the machine blew.

That night, as they were gathered around Virgil and praising his flying skills, Kayo slipped out to the balcony and took a moment out to watch the footage that One had taken of Scott running for his life. She knew that it wasn't her fault, but when she saw how close she had come to losing him Kayo couldn't help but gasp.

She wasn't the only one looking over what had happened earlier. Scott had slipped into the office and looked over the transcript of what Kayo had been through while he'd been rescuing the geologists. His blood ran cold at some of the verbiage and the images it evoked in his mind made him gasp.

A warm hand on her shoulder told her that her absence had not gone unnoticed. Kayo turned to see Scott right behind her, an inscrutable look on his face. She couldn't help herself; she pulled him in for a tight hug and was gratified that he didn't pause at all to reciprocate.

Pulling away slightly, Kayo searched Scott's face for something, she wasn't sure what. He frowned a little.

'I – I almost lost you today.'

They spoke in unison and then burst out laughing. Kayo returned to looking over the ocean and Scott turned with her.

They watched the last rays of the sunset and the night descend, shoulder to shoulder.
