A Tragic Night in Godric's Hollow

Year 5: Together at Last

March 1996
England: London
Hogwarts

Harry POV

I'm sitting in the common room staring at the fireplace since Ron and Hermione are at the library while Ginny is probably getting her face snogged off. I haven't really spoken to her since Christmas break. I hear the portrait open but I don't bother looking to see who comes in until I felt the sofa dip as someone landed right beside me.

"Don't mind the bats flying around the castle they are coming out of Michael's nose," Ginny huffed.

"Excuse me?" I asked confused.

I don't know if I heard her right…

"Bats, flying, nose, self explanatory," Ginny huffed again smacking her hand down on the sofa.

"I gather you hexed him," I said looking at her.

"What gave that away?" Ginny barked. She was starting to sound like her mother. "Oh and Potter does speak. You haven't spoken to me in months…"

"Yes well," I said. "You have been preoccupied."

"You mean Michael? Well that's over now," Ginny said and my stomach did a flip when I heard that. She was single, not that I had the guts to do anything about changing that.

"Can I ask why?" I asked her. I don't know if I want to know but I asked anyway.

"Why do you care Potter?" Ginny gave sarcastic laugh. "We are not friends."

"Okay fine I will leave you alone," I sighed getting up and walking away. "Sorry I bothered you."

Ginny POV

"No, I'm sorry Harry," I shouted after him as I got up, but I heard him keep going up the stairs. I threw myself back on the sofa; I wanted Harry to talk to me then when he does, I snapped at him. I let out a frustrated cry just as Hermione came though into the common room.

"I could kill your brother at times," she said before she saw the tears run down my face. "What's the matter Ginny?"

"Nothing," I answered as she took the seat beside me.

"What's Michael done?" she asked concern written all over face. "I heard something about bats, I gather that has something to do with you."

"Something like that," I sighed, and she was growing concerned by the minute. "He did do something but it not him I'm upset over."

"So Harry then," Hermione laughed knowingly.

"Am I that obvious?" I asked her.

"Only to me," Hermione told me. "So, what's our dear friend Harry done this time?"

"He didn't do anything, quite the opposite. He was being nice, and I got mad. Not even at him, but I said he wasn't my friend and he walked off," I explained.

"You might want to apologise," Hermione said.

I knew that…

"I tried but he kept on walking," I cried.

"Oh Ginny try again tomorrow," Hermione said giving me a hug. "Can I ask what Michael did to get bats coming out his nose?"

"He tried to get handsy, but I showed him how that would go," I explained a shocked look on Hermione's face says she was not expecting It.

"It's a good job you didn't tell Harry," Hermione said. "He would have went after Michael."

"Why would he do that?" I asked.

"For Merlin's sake, I thought Harry was the dense one," Hermione chuckled. I just give her a confused look. "He likes you Ginny, why will you not realise that yet? He has for months…"

"Oh…" I said as I tried not to smile knowing that. "That's why he wouldn't talk to me for the past three months, and why he was hurt when I said we weren't friends."

I felt worse than I did before, I waited for years for Harry to finally notice me then when he does, I don't even notice.

The next three of weeks Harry went back to avoiding me. I found out Michael ended up with a broken nose and Harry ended up with a detention that was around the same time. I asked if Ron knew what happened, but he just grunted.

"Harry please talk to me?!" I shouted but he dodged away. I sighed I just wanted to talk to him.

It was another week before I trapped him in a corridor…

"Harry talk to me!" I shouted as he turned to me.

"Why? We are not friends," Harry shot back. "We used to be."

"Will you just talk to me please?" I pleaded with him he tried to walk around me to get away. "We are still friends."

"What do you want to talk about?" Harry asked and I tried not to let the tears spill over. "Let me guess, you want to know if I hit your boyfriend? Ron told me you were asking…"

"He's not my boyfriend, and not just that. I want to say I'm sorry; I should not have been taking my anger out on you, you were just being nice," I apologized.

"…It's okay, you had just been manhandled by a creep," he smiled causing me to laugh. "And yes, I did break his nose and yes, they fixed it. And yes Ron broke it again, it's what friends do."

"I thought as much but I didn't know about Ron," I laughed as I leaned on against the wall.

"He had it coming," Harry said.

"So if you thought we weren't friends why did you do it?" I asked him.

"As I said he had it coming; he can't go around being a creep," he told me without realising he had stood right in front of me. "Hermione told you."

"Mmm…yes, apparently she thinks I'm just as dense as you," I replied as I felt my lips going dry. I licked my lips and the next thing I know Harry crashes his lips against mine.

"Yes…that's why I did it," he smiled breaking away from me.

"Thank you," I smiled.

"What for? Hitting him or kissing you?" he smirked.

"Both," I answered as I leaned forward kissing him. "So what does this mean?"

"It means, will you be my girlfriend, Miss Weasley?" he smiled.

"Mmm…yes," I smiled, and he give me a quick kiss.

"Come on I was heading to meet Ron and Hermione in the common room before you kidnapped me," he said leading me towards the common room. "And yes Ron knew I liked you too."

I took his hand and we walked towards the common room. Stepping into the room we saw Hermione and Ron were sat on the sofa. They noticed our hands when we walked in and smiled.

"Finally, it took you long enough," Hermione smiled.

"Harry I'm saying this as her brother and not your best friend. Hurt her and I will hurt you," Ron threatened.

"Shut up Ronald," I said.

"And also, no kissing in front of me," Ron warned.

"Oh Gin, let's not tell Sirius about us you know teacher and all," Harry said putting his arm around me.

"Yeah, dating in secret so people don't tell him," I agreed.

"But I would still like to take you to Hogsmeade tomorrow. First date and all," Harry said making me smile. I nodded in agreement he kissed the side of my head.

"Uhh man what did I tell you?" Ron grunted in disgust.

"Oh shut up Ronald, they are happy. You complained that Harry was being a moody git not that long ago," Hermione smacked him.

People started to file into the common room so Harry and I stood apart. How hard could dating secret be?

Harry POV

"Why do girls take ages to get ready?" Ron moaned from the chair in the common room.

"So you finally got around to asking Hermione out?" I questioned.

"We are just friends; I said I would go with her since you and Ginny have abandoned us," Ron grunted.

"We haven't abandoned you both, you would complain if you were third wheeling," I explained.

"I still can't believe my best friend is dating my little sister," Ron complained.

"Well believe it," I heard a voice from the stairs I tuned to see Ginny coming down the stair with Hermione following her.

"Well come on then you have kept us waiting long enough," Ron sighed as we made our way out the common room.

"You look nice," I told her as we followed behind Ron and Hermione so it didn't look strange if we came across Sirius.

"Thank you," she smiled back at me.

We walked for while before final reaching Hogsmeade…

"Right, we will leave you two alone. I really don't want to third wheel," Hermione smiled as I give Ron a laugh who didn't look to pleased with leaving me and Ginny together.

"Where would you liked to go first?" I asked.

"Honeydukes," she answered quickly.

"Okay," I agreed. "Let's go."

We made our way through the village, seeing the familiar sights of the shops and people. Hogsmeade was one of the few places in the country it didn't share the space with muggles unlike Godric's Hollow. Eventually we reached Honeydukes itself and took a look inside.

"Here you go," I said as I handed her a few fizzy whizbees.

"Thanks," she said as she put the packet into her pocket. "I haven't had any of them since last summer."

You couldn't get better than Honeydukes…

We walked around the rest of the village hitting all the shops before finally making our way towards the Three Broomsticks. It was on the road leading to the Three Broomsticks that we spotted my godfather-turned-Professor walking towards us.

Crap…

"Hey kiddo," Sirius waved as he approached.

"Hello Professor," Ginny greeted in her normal voice though I could tell her cheeks were slightly tinged.

"Dad—hey—what are you doing here?" I said while trying to keep a straight face.

"I'm just doing some shopping before I head back to the castle," he replied while giving me a strange look. "What are you doing here? I don't see Ron or Hermione either…"

"It's the weekend and we thought that we'd take a look around Hogsmeade. We lost track of Ron and Hermione a few shops back," I answered quickly.

"Well, if you're looking for them, they're in there," Sirius said as he pointed over his shoulder at the entrance to the Three Broomsticks.

"Thanks dad," I said as we quickly walked over to the entrance.

"Enjoy your date," he waved with a grin as he disappeared down the street. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do."

I felt my face burn as we entered the Three Broomsticks and I turned to see an equally red-faced Ginny. I let out a nervous laugh and rubbed the back of my neck as made sure to shut the door behind us.

"Sorry about him," I laughed nervously.

"Do you think he knew about us?" she asked the question.

"Nah," I shook my head. "He was just trying to get a rise out of us."

Sirius Black was a Marauder after all…

"If you're sure," Ginny mused. "There's my brother and Hermione," she said as she pointed them out.

"Let's find a table and get something to drink. I don't know about you but I'm thirsty," I suggested as we walked over an empty table. "Butterbeer?"

"Yes," she agreed with a nod. "No ice."

"Coming right up," I smiled back and walked over to the counter. "Two butterbeers please."

Once Madam Rosmerta returned with our drinks I quickly carried them over to our table. We talked a bit more about the village and Sirius but eventually we got up to leave. Needless to say, it was starting to become rather crowded as we left the Three Broomsticks.

"It's getting late," Ginny spoke up as we closed the door behind us. "We should head back to the castle."

"Yeah," I agreed. "Let's go."

We made our way back out of the village and kept to the road leading back towards Hogwarts. It was dark by the time we reached the castle and we had to make a mad dash to Gryffindor Tower before curfew. We reached our common room with a few minutes to spare and found it empty. No doubt everyone else was running late getting back and would be taking their time walking up.

"I had a great time Harry," Ginny told me with a smile.

Merlin her smile made my stomach do flips…

"Me too," I responded with my own smile.

Her cheeks reddened again, and she seemed to shift between feet almost nervously. For a second, I could only stare and wonder what she was thinking when I realised what she was waiting for. I hesitated for a moment before leaning in and drawing her lips to mine. My first thought was that it was wet but by Merlin she quickly took my breath away.

Eventually we had to come up for air…

"Well—erm—good night," Ginny stammered out with red cheeks. "I'll see you tomorrow," she said before scampering off up the stairs.

"Good night," I said a second later.

The smile wouldn't leave my face for the rest of the night…

"I heard Ginny broke up with Michael," Sirius said as I was sat in his classroom.

"Ah…yeah, over a month ago," I told him.

"I also see that you're back talking to her," Sirius half questioned.

"What are you trying to ask dad?" I asked raising my eyebrow at him.

"I was just wondering if you and Ginny were dating," he told me.

"No, why would you think that?" I questioned.

"Well you were both at Hogsmeade together without Ron and Hermione, and you looked rather like a couple," Sirius told me I just laughed.

"I think you're barking up the wrong tree," I joked.

"No need for the dog humour," Sirius laughed before he barked.

"Well I'm leaving you old mutt to your work," I said getting up before he could question me more.

"Harry this old mutt thinks you should ask Ginny out," Sirius said and I raised my hand in a wave that I heard him before walking out.
