Hearing the door to the ICU softly swoosh shut behind them, Kono swallowed hard as she turned and looked ashen faced at Lou, "You don't think that Danny meant that, do you? About him going back to Jersey. I mean he might have said it because of the medication he is on."
Taking a deep breath, Lou shook his head as they reached the elevator and he hit the button. "I think he did, Kono, and the fact that he said it while he is on the pain medication he is on makes it more likely that the truth of what he is really feeling about how he feels he has been treated by us slip out. You heard what Chin and Grace said, Danny feels like he's all alone and no longer part of the Five 0 ohana. I've been thinking Chin was right yesterday when he said that maybe Danny isn't as strong as we all thought he was, especially after everything he has been through over the last few years. We all think of Steve as a kind of crazy insane super Seal, super ninja, kind of guy who always has our backs but who also has a bad habit of racing into dangerous situations where others fear to tread without as much as a second thought. But I also think that, maybe, unconsciously, we have started to think of Danny as a kind of a superman, who not only copes with everything not only life but also being McGarrett's partner throws at him. But what if we were wrong, after all Danny's only human, and Danny found himself drowning and he thought he no longer had anyone here who he could turn to, not even McGarrett, that he was all alone..."
The elevator dinged as it reached their floor and the doors slid open. Stepping inside, he turned and hit the button that would take them down to the hospital foyer before he looked back at Kono as the doors slid closed and continued softly as the elevator began its journey down, "As Chin said yesterday, just think about it from Danny's point of view, Kono. In the last few months by trying to give Danny his space instead of being by his side he needed us the most, in Danny's mind he probably felt that he was being pushed aside. And then the other night when we all laughed and thought it was funny that Steve received all the get-well cards and Danny received none, only reinforced that in his mind because let's face it Kono, we all know that actions speak louder than words."
He sighed as he felt the elevator jerk as they reached the first floor and the elevator doors slid as he warned admitted his greatest fear to Kono, "And I really think, Kono, that after hearing what Danny just told us, that if we don't do something fast to change his mind, we are going to lose him. He's going to go back to Jersey whether we want him to or not."

"Maybe I …shouldn't hang…out with Steve …anymore. Maybe…I should go …home …to…Jersey ."
Steve felt physically ill and he felt a cold chill of fear ripple through his soul as Danny's softly murmured words to Lou and Kono just before they left the room echoed over and over in his head like an audio recording playing on an eternal loop, repeating itself over and over again. "Maybe I …shouldn't hang…out with Steve …anymore. Maybe…I should go …home …to…Jersey…" He swallowed hard as Danny's heartbreaking words echoed in his head again, making the thought that he may actually lose Danny forever even a more terrifying reality if he didn't do something to stop it from happening.
"Commander McGarrett."
He jumped and looked up at the nurse in surprise as she entered the room and quickly crossed to the side of his bed, glancing worriedly up at the figures on the heart monitor before she looked back down at him and asked, "Your heart rate and blood pressure is a little high. Is everything okay? Do you need anything for the pain? Maybe something to help you sleep?"
Steve mumbled distractedly, turning to look back at Danny. "No, I'm okay."
Glancing across at Danny, the nurse smiled as she looked back at Steve. "He's responding to the antibiotics, and if he keeps improving as much he has today, I am sure that he will probably be awake and alert enough tomorrow that you will be able to talk to him. But for now, he needs his rest and so do you," she told him firmly as she adjusted his pillows before she glanced back up at the heart monitor.
"I will," Steve promised looking back at the nurse as she picked up the television remote and pressed the button to turn off the television.
Looking back at Steve, she nodded skeptically, silently deciding that if he was still awake in half an hour she would give him something to help him sleep as she turned and with a last glance at Danny and the readings on his heart monitor left the room, turning off the overhead lights as she left, leaving on the small bedside lights that bathed room with a soft, dim light.
Turning to look at Danny again, Steve sighed and ran his hand over his head as he realized that if he wanted Danny to stay then just saying sorry and telling him just how much he wanted him to stay by his side was not going to be enough, that sometimes actions spoke louder than words ever could. If he wanted Danny to stay, he was going to have to show him just how important he was not only to the Five 0 and their Five 0 ohana, but even more than that, he desperately needed to show Danny just how much he really meant to him. Words were just not enough.
