Chin stared at Rachel in surprise. He should have anticipated that Rachel would show up at the hospital to try and see Danny but he could not fully believe that she actually had the audacity to do so, not after everything she had put Danny through. But here she was, asking to see Danny while he was so ill in the ICU. A small part of him was pleased when he saw her cheeks redden with a guilt filled blush as she shifted her weight from foot to foot in obvious discomfort under his stare as he demanded a little more heatedly than he meant to, "What are you doing here?" Lowering the volume and the intensity of the tone of his voice, he continued more gently, "I, um, I mean that I thought that you and Stan were still-"
"On the mainland?" Rachel finished his question softly. He nodded as she continued softly, "We were but then we got the phone call from Danny's father about…" She swallowed hard and wiped away a tear. "About Danny and Stan thought that maybe we should cut the work trip short and return to Hawaii to be with Grace and Charlie in case…."
"Stan's here?" Chin asked as he turned towards the unit's entrance doors, half expecting to see Rachel's husband hurrying through the door.
Rachel shook her head as she dropped her eyes towards the ground, not quite willing or able to look him directly in the eye as she answered. "No, we decided that it would be better if Stan stayed behind in New York and finish the business trip and that I return to Hawaii alone."
Chin nodded, wondering just if Rachel returning to Hawaii alone had really been a joint decision or one that Rachel had insisted on. He knew that what happened between Rachel and Stan and Rachel and Danny was really none of his business but watching the woman standing in front of him hurt and manipulate one of his closest friends, a man whom he considered ohana, made his blood boil. He had seen Rachel waltz in and out of Danny's life for the last six years, lying, manipulating and taking advantage, not only of Danny, but Stan as well. The woman was nothing more than a human wrecking ball in both Danny's and Stan's lives, even using her children to get what she wanted. Deep down Chin knew he could never forgive her for hiding the fact that Charlie was really Danny's son for her own selfish reasons and he often wondered if Charlie had not gotten sick, if the truth would have ever been revealed.
She had turned Danny's life upside-down over and over again in the six short years that he had known Danny and waltzed away each time with no real consequences for her actions, knowing Danny would forgive her for the sake of their two children.
And here she was again!
"I couldn't believe it when I got the phone call about Danny … I thought after the liver operation that both he and Steve were on the mend. I-I never thought that … Oh God, this feels like New Jersey all over again!" Rachel's voice hitched in a half-swallowed sob. Looking back up at Chin as several tears slowly trickled down her face. "So-so after Eddie's phone call, I managed to get on the next plane home and came directly to the hospital after we landed." She shook her head as she tried to brush the tears away with her hand as she admitted softly to Chin, "I screwed up Chin and I know that Danny probably hates me but I just want to see him. I want to sit with him for a while and tell him just how sorry I am for everything that has happened between us, that it was all my fault not his. I-I guess that I just need to tell him that I never meant to hurt him like I did and I want him to know that I have never stopped loving him, that-that I made a big mistake." Turning back towards Nalani, she pleaded, "Please…"
Chin's heart sunk as he saw the sympathy for Rachel flicker across the nurse's face as the nurse slowly nodded and rose to her feet. "Detective Williams is asleep at the moment, he had a bit of a rough night but I can't see any harm if you sit with him for a few minutes." she told Rachel quietly as she walked around the nurse's station, quickly grabbing a tissue from the box sitting on the desk, handing it to Rachel before she glanced across at Chin and smiled, "And Commander McGarrett is awake, so I am sure that he will enjoy some company as well."
