Sitting at the nurse's desk, Dr Mullins looked up as Chin exited his patient's room and headed towards the glass doors leading out of the Intensive Care Unit. Standing up, he leaned across the counter and stared out at the waiting room just outside the other side of the doors as they slid open. From his limited view, he could see the small waiting area was crowded with friends and family awaiting their turns to visit the two Five 0 detectives.
He frowned, although Danny's family, the other members of the Five 0 team, and Danny's and McGarrett's friends, including the Governor, were now obeying the ICU strict visitor rules, there was a constant stream of visitors, who often overstayed the five-minute visiting time limit and phone calls to the two Five 0 patients were beginning to disrupt the unit. He had considered transferring the Commander back to the surgical ward but quickly realized that would not solve the problem, McGarrett would ignore the visitor rules.
Sitting back down as the doors slid closed, he reached for Detective Williams's medical chart and flipped it open before studying the latest lab and x-ray results. Satisfied with the results that he read, he looked up at the nurse standing next to him and asked, "What are Danny Williams's latest observations?"
Glancing down at the patient notes in front of her, she quickly replied, "Blood pressure is up to 110/70, temp is down to 100.5, resps are 24 and pulse is 90." Quickly studying the previous half hourly observations jotted down by the nurse assigned to look after the detective, she added, "Looks like his obs have been improving steadily over the last twelve hours. Urine output has increased as well."
Mullins turned and looked across at the shared ICU room, listening to the nurse's report as he came to a decision. Turning back, he announced, "Sounds like, with some close observation by the surgical nurses for any more unforeseen and unexpected complications, that he is stable enough to transfer both him and Commander McGarrett back to the surgical ward." After scribbling his orders into Danny's chart, he reached for McGarrett's chart and added the orders there before rising from his chair and smiling, "Can you please arrange the transfer of the Commander and Danny back to the surgical ward while I go and inform our two Five 0 guests of my decision."

Leaning back against the pillows, on the bed that he had no real memory of leaving just five days before, Danny looked around at the growing group of family and friends who were slowly crowding into the room into which he and Steve had been transferred from the ICU earlier.
Enjoying the laughter and the playful teasing Lou was receiving from Steve about his attempts to remember the words and the actions to 'Mashed Potatoes' in the video that Renee was sharing around, Danny watched as Kono entered the hospital room and quietly greeted Steve with a "Hi, Boss," before she turned and walked across to the side of his bed.
"Hey," she whispered, forcing a small smile as she reached the side of his bed.
"Hey," he nodded as he watched her look down before she took a deep, shuddering breath and looked back up at him. "Look Danny, I know I told you this before, but I just want to tell you again just how really, really sorry I am for the way that I have been treating you." A tear trickled down her cheek as she rushed on, wanting to apologize for the pain she had caused someone who she considered more than just a close friend or colleague but as an important member of her ohana, the guilt and regret she was feeling evident in her voice. "I … I never, ever, meant to hurt you, I guess I just got caught up in the teasing and took it way, way too far." Swallowing hard as several more tears ran down her cheeks, she sighed and shook her head, looking down at the box she held in her hand as she began to scold herself, "I know that's no excuse for the way I treated you. It … it was stupid and childish of me." Looking back up at Danny, she forced herself to continue, "Please Danny, you have to believe me , I never meant to hurt you and the last thing I ever wanted to happen is to be the reason why you, Gracie, and Charlie no longer feel like you are part of my ohana." Looking across at Gracie and Eddie, who were silently listening to her apology, Kono added sincerely as more tears trailed down her face, "Because you are! All of you are! I love the three of you and I don't want to lose any of you." Returning her attention back to Danny, Kono continued, "We almost lost you once, Danny, I don't want to lose you again. I don't know how I can make this up to you but all I can do is promise you that it will never happen again." A soft sob caught in her throat as she reached for his hand as she begged, "So please… please, don't leave Five 0 and go back to the mainland because of my bad behavior. Even if you can't forgive me, Danny, please, please stay!"
"You're not really thinking about going to go back to the mainland, are you, Uncle D?" Eric asked in surprise from across the room.
Steve found his heart thumping hard against his ribs as he turned towards Danny and waited for his answer.
"No, he's not! Not yet! Not until his contract with HPD is completed and I believe that doesn't happen for another four years." Dennings announced as he entered the hospital room, followed by his assistant and Clara and Charlie, who stood near the doorway. Making his way into the center of the small crowd, the Governor stopped and stood in front of the two hospital beds before he cleared his throat, silencing the small group of friends, colleagues, and family who surrounded the two beds. "I was planning to do this after Commander McGarrett and Detective Williams were discharged from the hospital but unfortunately, I have been called away to the mainland on State business and I realized that Detective Williams family will have returned home before I return, so I have decided, since I knew that Detective Williams's family and friends would be gathered here tonight to do this now.
As you know, Detective Williams went above and beyond his duty as a Five 0 detective. When under fire and with his partner, Commander McGarrett wounded and bleeding to death, safely crash landed a plane, saving not only his life but also the lives of their prisoner and Commander McGarrett. And then after carrying out such a courageous rescue, ignoring his own injuries, he not only led the raid that led to the arrest of Dae Won, a drug smuggler who was responsible for the importation of a vast quantity of drugs into our beautiful islands and who was also responsible for the homicidal attempts on Commander McGarrett's, Detective Williams's and their prisoner's lives, Detective Williams was the officer who made the actual arrest."
Looking across at Danny who shifted, uncomfortably in the bed, embarrassed at the Governor's version of events which he knew if reversed and he was the one who was shot, Steve would have done the same thing, except Steve would have landed the plane gracefully on the water, not crash landed on a beach that had been full of tourists. The Governor smiled proudly as he continued his well-deserved praise of the now heavily blushing Five 0. "Not only did he go well above and beyond his duty as a police officer, when the doctors informed him, the only way they could save Commander McGarrett's life was by a liver transplant, he selflessly decided without any hesitation to donate half of his own liver. A decision that as we all know, due to complications after surgery, almost cost him his own life.
Now I had planned to present Detective Williams with the Gold Medal of Valor in a public ceremony after his and Commander McGarrett's release from the hospital, in honor of his actions that day." The governor fell silent as several 'ohhs' and 'ahhs' and a couple of "Well done, Danny!" rippled through the small group before he raised his hand for silence and continued his speech. "Unfortunately, Detective Williams has declined any such citation or honor as he does not believe that he did anything more than any other member of the Five 0 team, or anyone in their Five 0 ohana, would do for another or for anyone who needs their help or assistance."
Ignoring the surprised gasps that filled the room, the governor rushed on, "But, after several discussions between myself and Detective Williams," he said loudly, cutting off any comments, objections, or questions about Danny's decision, "Detective Williams has made just one small request that I am extremely happy to perform in recognition of what he did."
Everyone fell quiet, as the Governor stepped toward Steve's bed and requested, "Commander McGarrett, may I please have your driver's license."
Steve frowned, glancing at Danny who was now sitting higher up in his bed, grinning at him like a Cheshire cat before he turned back towards the governor, uncertain if he had heard the request correctly as he asked, confused. "My driver's license?"
The governor nodded solemnly as he held out his hand.
Steve's frown grew as he reached across and removed his wallet from the bedside table. Taking out his wallet, he opened it and took out the requested item before slowly passing it across to the Governor's outstretched hand.
Casting a quick glance down at the card he held in his hand, the Governor turned and ceremoniously handed it across to Danny, whose grin had, if even possible, grown even wider.
Gingerly holding his midriff, Danny silently turned and opened his own bedside table, taking out his own wallet and opening it before dropping Steve's licence inside.
Turning, Governor Denning nodded at his assistant who was standing silently near the shared hospital room door, she stepped forward and silently handed her boss a small, colourful rectangular piece of cardboard before stepping back.
The room grew silent as the Governor turned back to Steve and began solemnly. "With the power invested in me by the people of Hawaii, Commander Steven McGarrett, I hereby temporally revoke the driver's license, issued to you by the state of Hawaii-"
Any thought of objection died on Steve's lips as he shot a quick look across at Danny who was watching his reaction closely before looking back at the Governor as Denning continued. "And place it in the care of Detective Danial Williams until such times that Detective Williams is satisfied that you have passed a defensive driving test." A small triumphant smile tugged at Denning's lips as he added the warning. "Please take note, Commander, I did say a defensive driving course and not offensive!"
Stifled giggles and muffled laughter broke out in the room at the shocked look on McGarrett's face as the Governor continued, handing Steve the small card of cardboard, the back of which was adorned with a cartoon car, with another cartoon car and typing on the front. "And I hereby reward you with this temporary driver's license that came in a box of Cornflakes and-" Turning, he nodded at someone standing just out of sight in the hospital corridor just outside Danny's and Steve's shared hospital room before turning back towards Steve and announcing. "A car that Detective Williams assured me might just help keep the residents of Hawaii safe when you are on the road."
The room erupted into loud laughter as Charlie, grinning from ear to ear at being the center of everyone's attention, entered the room in a small, black, peddle-car replica of Steve's truck, followed closely by Clara. Stopping the peddle car in the middle of the room, Charlie climbed out and ran across to Steve's bed and with a small nod and smile from the Governor, presented Steve with a set of toy keys as he announced excitedly, "Here you go, Uncle Steve, the Gov'nor and Danno said to tell you that these are the keys to your new car."
"Oh , they did, did they, Charlie?" Steve laughed accepting the keys off Charlie and carefully studying them before casting a covert glance across at Danny, who enjoying his revenge.
Running back to the car, Charlie's eyes grew wide as he announced loudly, "Your new car is the best, Uncle Steve …" Looking back at Steve, he begged, "Please, can I drive it sometimes, too?"
"Please, Uncle Steve," Danny laughed, finally feeling for the first time in months, like he was part of the Five 0 ohana rather than an unwanted and unwelcome outsider looking in.
