CHAPTER 31

Charles Spurlok, already in that dreadful cave for days, decided this morning to have a look at Hope Valle; and when he was sneaking around behind the mercantile, he could hear all the gossip; and that's how he found out about Elizabeth's state of health and her marriage to Nathan. The cruel smile appeared on his face. That young woman was going to suffer at his hands, she was going to pay for everything that her brother Julius Spurlok had already suffered, both in jail and on his escape before being murdered by the Mounties. And since Jack Thorton was dead, it was only right that she should also pay for his part in the problem. And now she was married to Nathan, all the better because that man would lose his way in life and go crazy when he found his wife's body after all he had planned to do to that pretty little body. He would have a lot of fun with that little beauty, and then hand the remains over to her husband. He would also suffer greatly for interfering with his brother.

- I'll wait a few more days. If that bitch was so sick, everyone in this filthy coal town would be pampering the rich girl, which means she'd never be alone. But that's good, because in the meantime, I'm going to prepare some presents for her.

Charles Spurlok had irreconcilable differences with Elizabeth, Jack and Nathan. Charles was tired of Elizabeth being the center of everyone's attention, so he decided to channel his energy in a more positive way, but for him? Charles laughed. He sat in the mine and looked for ways to turn everyone in the town against that teacher. In addition to his initial anger and revenge, Charles now had an ambition and something to overcome. He was going to outdo Elizabeth, putting that woman at his feet, until she crawled and begged for his forgiveness, he had an ambition that would soon come true, he was going to have that woman in his bed, or rather, it would be on that dirty, hard floor of that dusty mine, where she would have to serve him and do his every wish.

The immense sky was home to clouds that drew fleeting shapes, while the wind whispered ancient secrets in the leaves of the trees. Peace reigned in this natural refuge, a place where time seemed to slow down and allow the worries of the everyday world to dissipate, the cruelty and evil reigning within Charles Spurlok's heart taking over his being, like a figure of evil, taming his being.
