Chapter 3: The New Straw hat is a Plumber?
Out at sea Nami, the younger sister of Nojiko, is sailing back to her hometown of Cocoyasi Village.
"They sure were nice guys, but I wonder… I wonder if they would let me join them again?"
Nami said with tears starting to roll down her eyes. Having left her friends behind and stolen their ship, The Going Merry, she continues towards home hoping to finally have enough money to buy her island back from Arlong. But little does she know a very unexpected, but very welcomed surprise awaits her back home.
As Nami approached her home she noticed something was off. They were celebrating, music was heard, everyone was dancing in the streets and eating and drinking like no tomorrow. As Nami anchored her ship and began walking towards town everyone turned to her.
"Nami!"
"Hey guys what's up? Did Arlong die?"
"Yes!"
The crowd answered, which surprised Nami.
"What?!"
Nami yelled in shock and began asking questions, like how, when and by who. Everyone then began to explain how a strange man in red clothes and overalls appeared out of nowhere and beat Arlong and all his crew by himself. Nami was amazed, grateful and terrified. Grateful that, finally someone had put an end to Arlong and made him pay for what he had done, but terrified at how strong this person must be to have defeated Arlong and his crew single handily. The townsfolk described his clothing, but nothing on how the man looks like.
She began to imagine a huge giant of a man covered in muscles, with a hard steely gaze staring down Arlong and his men, before putting an end to them. She finally reached the center of town where everyone told her their hero was along with Nojiko and Genzo. When she finally laid eyes upon the savior of the town, well to say she was shocked would be an understatement.
Shattered were her images of a tall, strong and handsome man with six pack abs and chiseled features. Instead, what she saw was a short pudgy man, who looked like he couldn't take on a light jog let alone a pirate crew of ruthless fishmen. As she was contemplating if this really was the same man who defeated Arlong, she failed to notice someone calling her name.
"Nami!"
"What!? Oh, it's you." Nami said as she turned around to see her older sister Nojiko.
"Yeah, it's me. What's up? You seemed to be lost in thought."
"Well, I was just thinking about that?" Nami said while point over at Mario who was dancing with some of the other villagers.
"Oh, that's Mario. He's the guy who beat Arlong."
"Yeah, and that's the thing that's been bothering me."
"What do you mean?" Nojiko asked while tilting her head.
"Well look at him!" Nami exclaimed while pointing at Mario again. "When the villagers told me someone had finally beaten Arlong, I thought of someone tall, muscular and handsome!"
"Handsome?" Nojiko asked giving her sister a confused look.
"You know what I mean! But instead, I find a guy I would call to come and fix my bathroom plumbing."
"Funny you should mention that, apparently Mario's main profession is a plumber" Nojiko said while giggling.
"A Plumber! Arlong was beaten by a plumber! You see why I am having trouble believing this!"
"Yeah, well don't let his chubby appearance fool you he is strong, I have seen his strength with my own eyes. But in addition to that apparently Mario is not just a plumber he is also a doctor, a carpenter, a construction worker, a painter, a professional athlete, and cook apparently."
Nami just stood there in shock as Nojiko continued to explain Mario's impressive resume.
"And most importantly, according to Mario, back in his home he is a hero. Their greatest hero as he personally protects and rescues his kingdom's princess time and time again."
"Wow." Nami said in awe. "So, he must be a strong fighter if he personally saves a princess from constant danger. Where is he from exactly?"
"Umm if we are to take him at his word, he's from another world."
"What!" Nami yelled, collapsing to the ground, the craziness of everything that has happened today finally catching up to her. "I… I just… I need to sit down and process all of this."
"I know." Nojiko warmly explained trying to comfort her sister. "It is a lot to process, but hey at least you didn't see him when he was wearing his frog suit." Nojiko said in a joking manner hoping to ease her sisters shock, but instead only increased it.
"Frog suit?" Nami asked before passing out due to shock.
The next morning Nami woke up in a bed at Nojiko's house. As she got up Genzo, who had been sitting in a corner, rushed to her and asked if she was alright. That is when Nojiko walked in, carrying a bag of tangerines and telling him to give her some breathing room.
"Hey Nojiko, I take it the trees are doing good?" Nami asked Nojiko while rubbing the last vestiges of sleep from her eyes.
"Yep, got a fresh batch here. But more importantly what about you?" Nojiko asked Nami with a hint of worry in her voice. "You just collapsed out of nowhere yesterday, we were really worried about you."
"Oh, well I had this crazy dream where you told me that Arlong was beaten by a plumber from another world." Nami said, giving a nervous laugh expecting Genzo and Nojiko to laugh with her at such a preposterous notion. But instead, they were dead silent causing Nami's nervous laughter to stop. "It was just a dream, right?"
"Hello!" a voice called out from the front door causing Nami to turn her head and see Mario, walking in carrying another bag of tangerines. "I see she's finally up, is she okay?" Mario asked while putting down the bag of tangerines.
"Yes, she's up, now Nami that wasn't a dream, Mario is real, and he really did beat Arlong, and he is also a very nice guy if you give him a chance." Nojiko explained, trying to keep her sister from freaking out. "Alright then, so Mario this is Nami my younger sister."
Mario slowly walked up to Nami, trying not to scare her. "Hello, I'm-a Mario nice to meet you." Mario said while extending his hand to Nami.
"Nice to meet you too." Nami said while shaking Mario's hand. "So then, it's true? You really beat Arlong and his whole crew by yourself?"
"Yep."
"Thank you, but why?"
"Well, he had a power star, they're the reason I'm here in the first place, but also because I couldn't just let some wannabe tyrant torture a village full of innocent people without doing anything about it now could I." Mario stated cheerfully.
"But why?!" Nami exclaimed. "This isn't even your village, so why risk your life for people you don't even know?" Nami asked with tears starting to form in her eyes.
Mario then puts his hand on her shoulder. "Because I wanted to. That's just how I am, I don't like seeing innocent people hurt, not when I can do something about it."
"But you could have been killed!" Nami exclaimed, but only receiving a shrug from Mario.
"Nothing new to me, now if you're feeling better, I would like you to come outside with me. And you too Nojiko."
Everyone followed Mario outside and in the road was Nami's old room, that Mario had saved when destroying Arlong tower. Everyone just stood watching, still wondering why Mario saved this room specifically.
"What's this?" Nami asked after a few moments of awkward silence.
"It's your old room from the tower." Mario explained while walking up to Nami and Nojiko with a pair of sledgehammers. "And from what Nojiko explained to me you have a terrible history with this place."
"Yeah." Nami said while remembering every pain filled night she had in that room. Every threat that Arlong or his men made to her if she wasn't compliant with their demands. And every hateful thought she ever had of Arlong.
"Well, I think it would be best if you-a two destroyed this room." Mario finally explaining his reasoning while handing the sledgehammers to Nojiko and Nami.
"Really? You mean it?" Nami asked.
"Of-a course, have at it." Mario said while giving the girls room to take up his offer, and they took it up with glee. They swung the sledgehammers at Nami's old room with everything they had. Every painful memory, every frustrated moment of helplessness, every angry thought they had of Arlong and what they wanted to do to him was released in a flurry of hammer swings towards the structure. After about an hour they finally broke the room down to rubble and Mario came with lit torches.
"Time to finish the job." Mario said handing them to Nami and Nojiko. They nodded their heads in agreement and threw the torches on the pile of rubble, lighting it ablaze. Nami and Nojiko fell to their knees and held each other while crying into each other's shoulders. But these were not tears of sadness, no they are of relief and happiness.
"You feel better?" Mario asked
"Yes." Nami replied, wiping away the tears in her eyes. "Thank you, Mario."
"You're welcome Nami. I'm-a just glad…" Mario, unfortunately, was interrupted when he heard someone running towards him. He turned around just in time to dodge a kick aimed at his face.
"YOU BASTARD!" was what the assailant yelled out, catching the attention of everyone in the nearby area. Mario got a look at the man, he was a tall, blond and suave dressed young man with a curly eyebrow, and apparently very mad at Mario for some reason.
"Why are these lovely ladies crying?!" the young man demanded.
"Oh, well I made them destroy Nami's old room so…" Mario didn't get the chance to finish as he had to dodge another kick aimed at his face.
"YOU MADE THEM DESTROY SUCH A PRECIOUS KEEPSAKE!" the young man demanded.
"Precious?!" Mario gawked out in shock at what this young man had said.
"Wait! Sanji it's not what you think." Nami tried to explain.
"Don't worry Nami-swan your knight in shining armor is here. And once I'm done beating this bad man, I'll cook you something to cheer you right up. So don't worry." Sanji stated in a sweet voice while doing what Mario could only describe as a weird noodle dance. "And as for you." Sanji said to Mario, the sweetness in his voice replaced by anger. "Looks like I'll have to teach you some manners."
"Mamamia." Mario sighed out in annoyance while getting in his fighting stance. "Lets-a go."
Sanji rushed at Mario throwing a flurry of kicks with the intention of punishing Mario for the crime of making a beautiful lady cry. However, Mario was blocking, dodging and parrying all of Sanji's attacks, infuriating the young man. Sanji then did a handstand and began to spin like a top towards Mario, but Mario had caught one of his legs and slammed him into the ground.
"So, had enough ye…" Mario was once again interrupted by a blade being shoved to his throat.
"That's enough out of you." The holder of the blade, another young man with green hair and a large scar across his chest, stated while giving Mario a death glare. There was a break in the action for a moment before Mario quickly pushed the blade away and attempted to punch the green haired man, but he backed away avoiding the attack.
"Zoro bro, catch!" two other swordsmen in the background yelled while throwing their swords towards the green haired swordsman name Zoro. He caught the blades and proceeded to pull off a bandana tied to his arm and tie to his head. He then held one blade in each hand and the third one in his mouth.
"That's an interesting sword stance, well since we're using weapons." Mario stated while pulling out his hammer.
"So, swords vs. hammers huh? Should be fun." Zoro said with excitement.
"Guys, wait it's not…" Nami tried to explain. But before she could finish, Zoro rushed towards Mario, bringing all three blades down on him. Mario used the head of his hammer to block the attack and push Zoro back.
Zoro instantly rushed forward again swinging his blades furiously at Mario. Mario was just blocking all his attacks and sidestepping any he couldn't.
"Despite how heavy that hammer must be he's pretty agile while using it." Zoro thought. Then, when Zoro struck with his left sword and the sword in his mouth, Mario sidestepped the attack and reeled back his hammer for a counterattack. Zoro threw up his blades blocking the attack, but the force of Mario's swing sent Zoro skidding backwards. "Speed and power huh? You really are one tough bastard; I'll give you that." Zoro said taking up a new sword stance. "Let me show you one of my specialties." Zoro stated as he began to spin the swords in his hands.
Mario prepared himself for the oncoming attack, then "Three Sword Style: ONIGIRI!" Zoro yelled while charging at Mario. Mario then managed to stop the attack with the top of his hammer, in a similar way that Mihawk did. "What!" Zoro gasped in shock as Mario not only stopped his attack, but in such an easy and familiar way.
Mario then flicked his hammer upward along with Zoro's swords and then thrusted an open palm outward to push him back. When he did Zoro coughed up blood and Mario noticed that there was blood on his glove. "Huh? But I didn't push him that hard." Mario thought as he watched Zoro land on the ground breathing heavily now.
Mario then approached him as Zoro tried to get back up, and then raised his hammer above Zoro. Zoro watched wide eyed, waiting for Mario to bring his hammer down. Then, Mario tapped the top of Zoro's head with the bottom of his hammer, taking him out of the fight.
"Well, now that that's over and done with I suggest…"
"Gum-Gum…"
"Oh, Mamamia. What now?" Mario asked in annoyance, turning to where the voice came from.
"Pistol!" the voice yelled while a stretchy rubber fist was sent flying towards Mario. Mario sidestepped the attack and a boy with a straw hat, red shirt, and sandals came following it.
"You jerk! You hurt my friends!" the boy yelled in anger, staring daggers at Mario.
"Well, to be fair, they attacked me first."
"Shut up! Now I'm going to kick your ass!" the boy yelled. Mario just let out an exasperated sigh before putting away his hammer and assuming his original fighting stance.
"Luffy wait!" Nami desperately cried out, trying to end the fight before it got much worse. Unfortunately, her voice fell on deaf ears as Luffy charged towards Mario while stretching his fist back.
"Gum-Gum Pistol!" Luffy yelled out while launching his stretchy fist towards Mario. Mario just sidestepped the attack and threw a punch at Luffy's head. When he struck it however it just stretched back.
"What the…" Mario gasped in shock.
"Gum-Gum Bell!" Luffy yelled, bringing back his head to head butt Mario. Mario blocked the incoming attack but was left bewildered at Luffy's stretching abilities.
"Well, that was weird. Your whole body stretches like rubber."
"I ate the Gum-Gum fruit and became a rubber man now attacks like that don't hurt me." Luffy declared.
"Really." Mario said, scratching his chin in thought. "Well, what if I put more force into my attacks." Mario said, bringing himself back into his fighting stance.
"Go ahead and try it." Luffy said back in retort, readying himself for another round.
Nami tried to get them to stop once again, but Genzo put his hand on her shoulder to stop her.
"What are you doing Genzo?"
"Don't bother Nami." Genzo told her while just watching Mario and Luffy prepare themselves for the fight. "You wouldn't be able to stop them."
"But they could seriously injure themselves." Nami protested with concern.
"Don't worry Nami, I doubt they would go that far." Genzo said reassuringly, giving Nami a smile.
"But…" Nami was about to protest but was cut off when Mario and Luffy clashed again.
Luffy sent out a barrage of stretchy punches and kicks, however Mario was able to easily able to avoid them all and counterattack with his own punches. And just as Mario guessed there was a limit to how much force Luffy's body could absorb as his stronger attacks were dealing damage to Luffy. However, he could see that Luffy would not give up, no matter how much damage he has taken. Mario was now concerned that if they kept this up, he would seriously hurt Luffy. With the others he just used enough force to take them out of the fight, but he was afraid that it wouldn't work on Luffy. Then Mario had an idea and outstretch his hand, beckoning Luffy to attack him.
Enraged Luffy stretched back both his arms. "Okay asshole, try this! Gum-Gum…" Luffy began to call out his attack, while Mario just stood there ready to catch it. "Bazooka!" Luffy called out, bring both his hands towards Mario hoping to send him flying.
Mario then caught Luffy's hands, skidding backwards a little bit.
"What the… Hey let go!" Luffy cried out, trying to pull his hands back. But Mario held them firmly in his grasp and then yanked on them pulling Luffy towards him. Luffy was then sent flying towards Mario. "Why you…" Luffy said frustratedly. He then launched a kick towards Mario to make Mario let him go. But Mario just avoided the attack and began to jump around Luffy while still holding onto his hands.
This went on for a little bit, Luffy wildly launching attacks at Mario while Mario just hopped around Luffy dodging each attack until finally, Mario tied up Luffy's limbs creating a rubber ball man.
"Okay that takes care of…" Mario then heard rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned around to see a small projectile fly towards him. With a quick swing of his cape Mario sent the projectile back.
"AAAHHH" a voice cried out as a small explosion went off and a strange, long nosed man fell out of the bushes.
"Usopp!" Nami cried out as she watched her friends be defeated one by one.
"Okay, is-a that it? Anyone else?" Mario asked looking around to see if anyone else was about to jump him. But no one said anything and the two swordsmen who threw their swords at Zoro just stood there in terror. "Okay then, Nami, Genzo, Nojiko." Mario called out.
"Yes?" they answered back.
"Do you mind helping me get these guys back to the house so I can treat them? I think they may be seriously injured, even though I held back." Mario said while rubbing the back of his head.
"Wait, we got a doctor in town, let's just take them over there." Genzo said while picking up Sanji.
"Good idea." Mario said while picking up and examining Zoro. "Mamamia, this guy has a huge wound on his chest that hasn't healed up yet, he shouldn't be walking around let alone fighting." Mario explained while getting a closer look at Zoro's chest area.
"MMPH! MMPPHH!" Luffy cried out, not being able to speak properly due to being tied up in a ball.
"Look, I'm a friend okay. I just want to help these guys get better." Mario tried to explain to the angry bouncing rubber ball boy.
"Luffy, it's okay. Mario is a nice guy; he saved my entire village." Nami explained, trying to calm Luffy down.
"Mmpph?" Luffy asked.
"Yes, really." Nami answered, assuming Luffy said really.
Luffy then looked at Mario and Mario nodded his head in agreement. Luffy then just sat there, before bouncing up and down angrily while letting out some more muffled cries at Mario.
"Look, I really need to take these guys to the doctor's office to treat them because they could be hurt. I'll untie you once-a we get there."
"MMPPHH! MMPPHH!"
"Well, you-a just have to put up with it for now." Mario said while following Genzo to the doctor's office, with Luffy angrily bouncing after him.
After getting to the doctor's office and untying Luffy, Mario, with the help of the towns doctor, was able to treat Usopp, Sanji, and Zoro. But Zoro's chest wound was still going to need time and rest to heal, but Zoro wouldn't have it.
"I strongly recommend you rest for a few days or else that wound will reopen." The town doctor explained, trying to get Zoro to lie down.
"No can do, don't have time to rest we got places to be." Zoro stated, shaking off the doctor.
"Is-a that so?" Mario asked, "Then I guess I don't have-a choice." Mario said while pulling something out of his suitcase.
"Wait, what are doing?" Zoro asked, already fearing what Mario was about to do.
Mario then pulled out a large pill. "Take one of these. They promote healing and should make what should be a few days of recovery only one day." Mario explained.
"Hey that's about how long it should take us to reach the next island and since you sleep for most of that time it would be perfect." Usopp explained.
"Yeah but, you can't seriously expect me to swallow that thing." Zoro stated pointing at the pill that was about as big as Mario's hand.
"Oh, you don't swallow this pill." Mario said.
"But then how do you…" Zoro was about to ask, before his cheeks went bright red and Sanji started snickering. "What are you laughing at you shitty cook?" Zoro angrily asked Sanji.
"Oh, nothing moss head. Just the fact about you having to "take" your medicine." Sanji stated with an almost evil grin growing across his face.
"Why would that be funny?" Luffy questioned.
"Look Luffy, there are only two ways you can take medicine like that. One is by swallowing it and the other way is, well by shoving it up the other hole." Usopp explained.
"Your nose?" Luffy asked.
"NO! Not your nose moron!" Usopp yelled out while smacking Luffy on the head.
"Oh! Your ears." Luffy proudly exclaimed, believing he figured it out.
"WHY WOULD THAT BE YOUR NEXT CHOICE!" Usopp yelled in Luffy's face, his eyes and tongue bulging out. "Look Luffy, what hole does the food you eat come out of?"
"It comes out of…" Luffy didn't finish his sentenced as it finally dawned on him what hole they were talking about. "You mean Zoro going to shove the pill up…"
"No, no, no, no, this pill is not a suppository either." Mario interrupted before Luffy could finish his sentence.
"Then how do I…" Zoro was about to ask before Mario threw the pill at his chest. The pill then vanishing in burst of sparkles.
"What the…"
"The pill is absorbed through your skin. You should be feeling the effects right about now." Mario explained while putting away his suitcase.
"Hey your right! The pain is gone already!" Zoro said while rubbing his chest.
"That is some amazing medicine you got there! Where did you get it?" the doctor questioned.
"Oh, I make these myself." Mario explained, impressing everyone in the room.
"Well, I say that makes you a damn fine doctor." Sanji said while light up a cigarette.
"Yeah, and we really need a doctor, right Luffy?" Usopp chimed in, making a not so subtle hint towards Luffy.
"Right Usopp, so Mario." Luffy said while walking up to Mario and placing his hand on Mario's shoulder. "Join my crew."
"What, you me to join your crew?"
"Yeah, it'll be fun. Come on, please." Luffy begged Mario.
Mario just scratched his chin "I'm-a not so sure."
"I think you should accept his offer." Genzo stated entering the building with papers in his hands. "Have you seen the new bounties posted this morning?" Genzo questioned.
"Bounties?" Mario said while tilting his head in confusion.
"I should've known, well take look." Genzo requested while unfurling one of the papers.

Everyone just stood there, looking at the wanted posters until.
"Woohoo I finally got a bounty, alright! But wait." Luffy said, looking at the wanted posters again. "Why is your bounty higher than mine?" Luffy asked Mario.
"Probably because he took down Arlong and his crew single handily, even when Arlong was powered up by one of those "Power Star" things." Genzo stated.
"Power Stars?" everyone asked.
"These." Mario said while pulling out the now recharged power star.
Everyone gasped at the shining star. Staring at its sparking beauty until Nami spoke up.
"How pretty, I wonder how much it's worth."
"Priceless since I won't be letting it go." Mario said, putting the star away in his overalls. "Me and my brother were sent to this world to collect all five Power Stars and bring them back."
"Wait, did you just say, "sent to this world" meaning you're from another planet!" Usopp exclaimed in shock.
"Well, other universe is actually more accurate." Mario explained shocking everyone there, except for Luffy who rushed towards Mario in excitement.
"So cool! Then it's settled you must join my crew; you would be a perfect crew member." Luffy asked Mario, hoping he would say yes.
Mario stood there thinking for a moment, until finally "Okie dokie, I'll join your crew Luffy. But on two conditions. One, it is temporary."
"Temporary?" Luffy questioned, not knowing what the word meant.
"It means not forever; in other words, he's planning on leaving some time in the future." Zoro explained.
"What, why!?" Luffy demanded.
"As I said I'm only here for the Power Stars, once me and my bro collect them all we have to head back home."
"What, really, there's no way you can stay?"
"I'm sorry Luffy, but I do have a home to get back to after I'm done with my task. Besides, who else is going to rescue the princess if she gets kidnapped again?" Mario explained, getting Sanji's attention.
"Did you just say a princess!? What's her name?!"
"Peach"
"Ah, what a lovely name for a princess who is probably even sweeter than sweetest peach." Sanji exclaimed with hearts in his eyes, before turning to Mario with a look of anger. "And you abandoned her to go and look for these stupid stars?!" Sanji said.
"Well yes, I was asked to."
"By whom!?" Sanji demanded.
"By Rosalina, the cosmic goddess." Mario explained causing Sanji's eyes to have hearts again.
"Did you just say goddess?"
"Yes, she's the who watches over the birth of all the new stars in the universe, in fact you could say she is the mother to all stars. And she was the one who personally asked me and my brother to find the power stars." Mario explained, which caused Sanji to fall to the ground in despair.
"A princess and a goddess, damnit Mario, you're so lucky, I wish I was you. It's not fair, damnit, damnit, damnit." Sanji said while repeatedly slamming his fist on the ground.
"Um… is he okay?" Mario asked, worried about the mood swings Sanji just exhibited.
"He's just weird like that. Ignore it, now your second condition?" Zoro asked getting everyone, except Sanji, back on topic.
"Oh yes, and the second condition is that you allow for two additional crew members to join along with me."
"Oh, you mean your brother?" Luffy asked
"Actually no, me and my brother were separated when entering this world. I have no idea where he is now."
"And that doesn't worry you?" Nami asked.
"It's-a okay, he's just as strong as me and if we are both looking for the Power Stars, we'll run into each other eventually." Mario explained.
"Oh, okay then who are the others you want to join?" Luffy asked.
"That would be these two." Mario said lifting his hat and having Starlow fly out.
"Yello Hello, I'm Starlow!" the cheery star sprite exclaimed catching everyone's attention.
"Cool! It's a star fairy!" Luffy said excitedly.
"What!? No! I'm not a fairy I'm a sprite very different. Fairies are little tricksters that like to pull pranks on people. I am a sprite, a servant of the star mother Rosalina herself, obviously I am much better than a measly fairy." Starlow stated as a matter fact, remembering her competitiveness with a certain annoying blue fairy who once accompanied the hero of time.
"Okay then, and who is the second person you would like to join us?" Usopp asked.
"That would be cappy." Mario said while lifting his cap.
"You gave your hat a name?" Sanji asked, finally getting over how "lucky" Mario is for know both a princess and a goddess.
"What, I can't have a name?" Cappy said finally revealing himself.
"The cap just talked!?" Sanji said in shock as everyone was caught off guard by Cappy's reveal.
Cappy flew off Mario's head and took his true form. "Hello, I am Cappy, and I am also here to help Mario gather the Power Stars."
"So cool! Hey what can he do Mario?" Luffy asked excitedly waiting for Cappy's ability explanation.
"When I throw him onto something, I can take control of whatever he's landed on." Mario explained.
"Really?" Luffy asked with stars in his eyes.

"I owe Mario a lot for saving my village, plus if he's a part of the crew I have a feeling it'll be much easier to collect treasure so no objections from me!" Nami added while making a cute face.
