Chapter 19: Prepping for the Counter Attack

Mario and his friends were in the spaceship flying back to the resistance base. While Mario, Luigi, Peach and the rabbids were discussing what to do about Cursa's new army the Straw Hat pirates, Smoker and Ace were admiring the ship they were in.

"This ship didn't seem that big from the outside but it's very roomy in here." Nami stated.

"You can say that again Nami-swan. Can you imagine how easy it would be to travel the Grand Line in this ship." Sanji said with hearts in his eyes.

"But we have the Merry." Usopp said.

"Can the Merry fly?" Zoro asked.

"Well no, but we can't just abandon the Merry!"

As Usopp continued his argument with the rest of his crew, Mario and his friends continued their discussion.

"So where are we headed to Mario?" Beep-o asked.

"Here, to this cave."

Mario said as he pointed to a point on the holographic map being projected in front of them.

"Why there?" Peach asked.

"There's a resistance there trying to fight back against Cursa and her partner. We need to help them." Mario replied.

"Are they the ones we helped out when we arrived?"

Mario nodded to Peach's question.

"It's good to know that there are people fighting back against Cursa's influence."

"Yes, but the odds of them winning this war is less than five percent." Beep-o stated.

"One point twenty five percent actually." Jeanie, the ships artificial intelligence, said while appearing in her holographic form. "But with the appearance of Mario and his friends along with the sparks, their odds increase to a sixty two point forty five percent chance of winning."

"Just that much?" Vivi asked.

"Don't worry Princess Vivi, Mario and his comrades normally face worse odds than that and they still find a way to save the day. So this is actually a better situation than Jeanie makes it out to be."

"Okay."

Vivi seemed to calm down at Beep-o's words.

"The reason for our better than usual odds are due to the fact that the Darkmess is all that gives these "Baroque Works" criminals the edge over Mario and his friends. Now that we have the sparks and the weapons to utilize them there is no one in the vicinity of this island that can stop Mario or his friends." Jeanie explained.

"Really?" Chopper asked with shock.

"Yes, I scanned the area once we arrived. There are a few strong readings, but that is in comparison to you and your fellow pirates. Compared to Mario and his friends, they are weaker than the average goomba."

"Oof." The rabbids all said.

"What's a goomba?" Chopper asked.

"They are Bowser's foot soldiers. I normally go through a couple hundred to a couple thousand of them on my adventures." Mario explained.

"Really? And none of the Baroque agents can match up to one. Wait, that doesn't include us right?" Zoro asked.

"Well..."

"Yes it does."

Jeanie said interrupting Mario.

"What! How? And for that matter what does a goomba look like?"

Jeanie then showed an image of a goomba on the hologram in the center of the room.

"What the? It's a walking mushroom!" Zoro said.

"I know." Jeanie replied.

"Your saying that we're weaker than a walking mushroom."

"Yes, in fact based on my calculations if you and your friends tried to survive in our universe, without Mario's help, your chances of survival are eight point fifteen percent. And I'm being generous with those odds."

"Why you!"

Zoro tried to charge at Jeanie, but Mario stopped him.

"It's just a joke Zoro. Wow Jeanie, your learning humor. Impressive." Mario said.

"But it wasn't a jo-"

"Like I said, funny joke. Now while we're waiting to arrive at the base I have question for you Ace. How did you meet Luigi?"

"Oh, well I came across him in the desert."

Flashback to Ace somewhere in the desert

We see Ace on top of a dune watching four Baroque agents surrounding some man in green.

"Poor bastard. I wonder if I should get involved." Ace said to himself.

His question was answered when one of the Baroque agents attacked the man in green. But the man in green avoided the attack and struck the man with a knife hand jab so strong that the agent was sent flying. The other agents attacked in anger, but to no avail. The man in green was too quick and dispatched two of the three agents with ease.

"Don't move!" The last agent yelled. "Or else I'll gut your dog."

The last agent was holding a sword to the mans strange looking dog. The man in green just started laughing uncontrollably.

"What's so funny!?" The Baroque agent asked.

Bark!

The dog then bit the agent's hand.

"Aahh! You damn mutt!"

The agent then swung his sword and decapitated the dog. But the dog's body was still moving and wagging its tail while the head was still biting the agent's hand.

"What the!"

The agent was shocked at this and then he was shocked literally as the man in green attacked him with a blast of lightning from his hand. As the agent fell unconscious the dog's head floated towards the body and reattached itself. The dog then began to bark happily while running around the man in green.

"Well that was impressive." Ace said as he jumped down from his spot. "So did your dog eat some kind of ghost devil fruit?"

"Devil fruit?" The man in green asked in confusion.

"Yeah, you know, the fruit he ate to gain his powers. Just like you, I'm assuming you have a lighting devil fruit."

"Oh this?" The man in green then charged some electricity in his hands. "I didn't get this from eating a "devil fruit" I have electrokinetic powers naturally."

"Really? And what about your dog?"

"He's a ghost dog. No devil fruit here. His name is Polterpup."

Bark! Bark!

Polterpup wagged his tail in excitement while greeting Ace.

"Well how about that, a ghost dog. And I thought I've seen everything on the Grand Line."

"Grand Line?"

"Yeah, that's the part of the sea we're at right now."

"Actually I'm kind of lost at the moment. Have no idea where I am."

"Really? How'd you end up in Alabasta then?"

"Is that what this place is called? And well, I fell from the sky."

"Oh so you're from Sky Island then."

"What? No, I'm from a different universe actually."

"Huh? Did you hit your head when you fell from Sky Island?"

"No, and I'm not from Sky Island. Show him Starlee."

The man then lifted his cap and a small yellow sphere came out.

"Yippee, howdy. I'm Starlee!"

"Huh? What is that?"

"I'm Starlee and I'm a star sprite sent from the star goddess Rosalina to accompany Luigi on his quest to find the power stars."

"I'll explain but first." Luigi's stomach then began to growl. "Do you have any food."

"No, but there's a town nearby. Let's find a restaurant and you could tell me about yourself Luigi."

"Okie dokie. By the way, I never got your name."

"It's Ace, now let's go."

Back in the present

"And from there Luigi told me his story and how he was separated from his brother Mario when they arrived in our world." Ace explained.

"Interesting, and how did you end up captured by Cursa and Crocodile?" Mario asked.

"Yeah, while we were eating at one of the restaurants me and Luigi heard the sounds of panicking people outside. I figured it was just some pirates causing trouble but once one of the fleeing citizens mentioned some dark goop Luigi got a serious look on his face. He ran out and I followed, that's when we saw it. That "Darkmess" stuff taking over the city and corrupting anyone it touches. As soon as those Darkmess creeps saw Luigi they started to attack us. They seemed extremely determined to catch us."

"Well Ace, Luigi was with us when we stopped Cursa the first time so it makes sense they would capture him while they had the chance." Peach explained.

"I see, well we tried to fight back, but we sooned learn that was a losing battle. No matter what we did nothing seemed to hurt those bastards. And soon we were overwhelmed."

"Oh dear. And then what happened?"

"They dragged us to Cursa and Crocodile. As soon as they brought Luigi in front of them he was swallowed by that Darkmess tentacle from before. As for me, they had me fight Crocodile in his new form. Probably using me as a guinea pig for his new powers."

Ace had a frustrated look on his face while he told his story. Peach then turned to Smoker who was just sitting silently.

"And you mister Smoker. How did they catch you?"

"I came here with my unit to investigate some rumors."

"What rumors?"

"Rumors about the disappearance of Alabasta's princess and that she was seen with a certain group of pirates."

Smoker then glanced towards Mario.

"I came to see if these rumors were true, and if they were to rescue the princess."

"But I don't need rescuing, not from Mario and the Straw Hats. They rescued me from Baroque Works and are helping me in saving my kingdom." Vivi said.

"And what do they get in return?" Smoker asked. "What did you promise them for their help?"

"What? Nothing." Vivi answered, taken aback by Smoker's question.

"And you trusted them? Pirates are ruthless criminals princess. They'll stab you in the back first chance they get. No doubt Red Cap and Straw Hat are just waiting for the chance to double cross you and eliminate Crocodile and this Cursa in one fell swoop."

Peach was angry at Smoker's accusation and was about to say something when.

"HOW DARE YOU!" Vivi yelled, shocking everyone there. "How dare you accuse them of crimes they haven't committed. What proof do you have for these outlandish claims?"

"Proof? They're pirates. What further evidence do you need?" Smoker asked.

"That's it? These pirates have already done more good for my kingdom than the marines in a span of a couple of months. They have not only rescued me but the citizens of drum kingdom as well. Now don't get me wrong mister Smoker, I'm not foolish enough to believe that all pirates are like this. There are plenty of pirates that are scum. But can't you see that the Straw-Hats aren't like that?"

Smoker just looked at the straw hats around the room before turning back to Vivi.

"Even if they have helped you and others, they are still pirates wanted by the government. And I am a marine whose duty is to capture these pirates. I will work alongside them for now as there is a more dangerous enemy at the moment. But as soon as Crocodile and Cursa are taken care of I'm going to take down the Straw-Hat pirates."

Vivi was about to say something, but Luffy(Shadow) put his arm in front of her to stop her.

"I think he's telling you to stop. There is no need to defend us from Smoker." Zoro said.

"Yeah Vivi, we knew what we were signing up for when we set sail." Nami added.

"We may not like it but we can't get mad at Smoker for doing his job." Sanji said.

"Yeah, it's as natural as dogs versus monkeys." Usopp said.

"Is that the saying?" Chopper asked Usopp.

Usopp went on a spiel about how he was one of the smartest people in the world. Meanwhile Vivi looked around and saw the Straw-Hats giving her smiles and thumbs ups, even Luffy even though he was still just a shadow.

"Here Vivi." Peach said while handing Vivi some tea. "This will calm you down."

"Thank you Peach, I mean Princess Peach."

"Just Peach is fine." Peach then turned to Smoker. "Now Smoker, how did you end up being captured?"

"When we arrived we came across a town that was under attack by this "Darkmess". We tried to save the town but in the end we only rescued a few civilians before we were taken down. I was also brought to Crocodile, for the same reason as Fire Fist more than likely. They took my men and Tashigi somewhere else. All I remember was the horrible screaming coming from the room they took them to."

Zoro raised his eyebrow at the mention of Tashigi.

"They are stooges by now. Just like Baroque Works, but they were turned forcibly. If we defeat them with spark powered weapons then they should be freed of her control." Mario explained.

"Speaking of which, where are the weapons we were waiting for?" Nami asked.

Mario, Luigi, Peach and the Rabbids showed off all the weapons they had and the sparks flew out as well.

"Cool, so where's our weapons?" Usopp asked.

"Well, we were only expecting Mario and his friends to fight Cursa so we brought only theirs. But we do have some extras." Beep-o said as a floating chest came out of a wall and opened. "So mister Zoro, I see you are a swordsman, correct?"

Zoro just nodded.

"These are prototype blades I made as an upgrade for Edge. She refuse all three of them though." Beep-o explained as three swords came out of the chest.

"Can't beat the original." Edge commented with a grin.

"If you say so. So which sword would you like?"

Zoro was silent as he examined the three swords. They were the same length as Edge's blade but they were thinner, resembling japanese swords.

"So she didn't want any of them right?" Zoro asked Beep-o.

"Correct."

"And does anyone else use swords to fight?"

Everyone shook their heads.

"Then I'll take all three."

"Excellent choi-, wait what!?"

Beep-o was shocked as Zoro took all three spark blades.

"Why!? I understand taking two but why three?"

"Because I use three sword style."

"Three sword style? Is that even a thing? It sounds ridiculous."

"Oh, it's a thing Beep-o, trust me. Zoro is a great swordsmen and his three sword style is quite powerful." Mario explained.

"Thanks Mario, can't wait to test these out." Zoro said with a grin.

"Very well then, now let's choose your spark."

At Beep-o's command all the sparks flew out and everyone, besides Mario and his friends, were amazed by them. That is when a large black spark flew towards Zoro.

"I'm Exosphere, I like you Zoro. You're tough, just like me. Let's go beat up some Darkmess creeps." The spark said.

"I like this guy. Alright Exosphere, you're with me."

"That was easy. Listen up everyone, sparks don't just give you the power to fight Darkmess, they also have special abilities. Exosphere for example can decrease the amount of damage you take from attacks. While his power is active it would be safe to say that you're bulletproof Zoro." Beep-o explained.

"Nice." Zoro said with a smirk.

"That's good, maybe he can also help with moss head's shitty sense of direction." Sanji quipped.

"What was that you pervy cook!?"

"You heard me moss head!"

Zoro and Sanji got in each others faces until Peach separated them.

"Now stop fighting you two."

"But..."

"I said, stop fighting, so you're going to stop, right?"

Peach asked in calm but authoritative tone.

"Yes."

"Of course Peach-swan."

Zoro and Sanji answered.

"Okay then, who's next?" Beep-o asked.

That is when Usopp stepped up to the chest and began rummaging through it. He pulled out what looked like a large slingshot the same color as Luigi's bow.

"Oh, you can put that back mister Usopp." Beep-o said.

"Why?"

"That was a failed prototype of a long range weapon for Luigi since he's our sniper. But we couldn't get it to work. None of us could shoot with it."

"Then I'll take it and I'll show you how to properly wield this magnificent weapon!" Usopp proudly declared.

Everyone, besides Mario and Luffy, sweatdropped at his statement.

"It's a failed weapon, but if you insist. Now let's choose your spark."

Usopp was looking when a spark flew up to him.

"Hello there, are you a brave warrior?"

"Of course, in fact I, the great Usopp, am known as the greatest warrior in all the east blue."

"Great then let's team up. I'm Screech and our enemies shall run in fear of our mighty battle cry."

"Cool! So's what's your ability?"

"That's it. For our enemies to run in fear of us."

"Really, that's it? I mean, of course that's it. That is all that I, the great and powerful Usopp, need for victory."

Everyone, except Mario, began to snicker at Usopp's bragging.

"Yeah, you show Crocodile and Cursa how a warrior of the sea fights Usopp." Mario said.

"Do you think he could actually use that weapon Mario?" Beep-o asked.

"I know he can. You show 'em Usopp."

Usopp was happy that Mario believed in him. That is when Nami walks up to Beep-o.

"What about me?" Nami asked.

"How do you fight miss?"

"Well I use a staff, but my expertise is in reading the weather and using that to my advantage. Maybe you have some weapons that specialize in that field."

"I believe these would be best."

Jeanie said as she pulled out four different colored rubber ducks from the chest.

"Rubber ducks, really?"

"They may look like rubber ducks but they are actually grenades. Each one uses a different element. The red one is fire, the light blue ice, stone for the brown one, and this purple one is vampiric goo."

"Vampiric goo? What is that?"

"A purple goo that leaves the affected victim drained of energy. They may continue to fight but it will be much harder."

"That would be helpful against tough devil fruit powers."

"Glad you agree miss Nami. Now if you'll come with me, I'll show you how to use them."

Jeanie took Nami to the side as Sanji stepped up.

"And how do you fight sir?" Beep-o asked.

"I use my legs. Got anything for that?" Sanji asked.

Beep-o was pondering on Sanji's question when he had an idea.

"Here, try these."

Beep-o pulled out a pair of red mechanical shoes and handed them to Sanji.

"We made these for Rabbid Mario, but his legs were too short and stubby."

"NO! They chafed my thighs!" Rabbid Mario said in his defense.

"Okay, they seem a bit small for me."

Sanji pointed out as the shoes were the size of rabbid feet.

"Just try them on and see what happens." Beep-o said.

Sanji did just that and as he brought the shoes to his feet they opened up and formed around Sanji's foot size.

"What the, how?"

"My designs. I made it so the boots could shapeshift to fit anyone's shoe size." Beep-o said with pride.

"Well damn, that's impressive. Now where's my spark?"

A red spark riding a fire cloud flew up to Sanji.

"So are you my spark buddy?" Sanji asked.

"I don't know. Do you have any burning desires?"

"Desires, I'll show you I have desires and a burning passion too. My desire to achieve my dream, to pee-, I mean, to find the All Blue!"

Everyone just stood in silence. Dumbstruck as they could feel Sanji's drive for two dreams in his speech.

"Hey Sanji, what was that first one?" Mario asked.

"Nothing, just misspoke is all." Sanji answered while dismissively waving his hands.

"But..."

"Yep! Just misspoke! My dream is to find the All Blue!" Sanji said while giving a nervous laugh.

"I don't get it, but I can sense your burning drive for your dreams. All right then! My name is Pyrogeddon and I'll be your partner. Let's cook the bad guys!"

"You got it." Sanji said with a smile.

"Alright then, who's next?" Beep-o asked.

Ace walked up the chest and began to look around. But none of the weapons really caught his interest.

"Is there something wrong Ace?"

"Yeah, sorry Beep-o, but none of these weapons seem good for me."

A red spark then flew up to Ace.

"Hey little guy, you my partner? Just let me find a good weapon."

"You don't need it."

The spark then touched Ace and he began to glow with spark power.

"What the?"

Ace was shocked at the new power coursing through him.

"Amazing, you seem to be on the same cosmic wavelength as the sparks." Beep-o stated.

But the One Piece crew looked at him in confusion.

"Let me explain, the weapons we use are able to use the power of the sparks because they are designed to use the cosmic wavelength to channel the energy of the sparks. But you Ace are naturally running that same wavelength."

"Does that mean I have the same power as a spark?" Ace asked.

"No, it simply means that you can use the power of the spark without assistance. Something even Mario and his friends can't do. It's like you are a natural medium for the sparks."

Mario then had an idea.

"Hey Chopper, pick out a spark."

Chopper listened to Mario and a spark flew up to him as he walked up.

"H-Hello." Chopper said nervously.

"Hello, I'm Pulser and I like to help my hurt friends."

"Me too! Do you want to be friends?"

"Of course!"

Pulser then touched Chopper and Chopper began to glow with spark power as well.

"Another one! But how!?" Beep-o asked in shock.

"Devil fruits." Mario answered. "Chopper is a devil fruit user and I'm assuming Ace is as well."

"Correct Mario." Luigi said. "From what Ace told me he ate the Flame-Flame fruit, so now he's a fire man."

"Devil fruits?" The Mushroom Kingdom inhabitants asked.

"Let me explain." Ace said getting everyone's attention. "In this world there are special fruits called devil fruits. If you eat one then you get special abilities depending on which one you ate." Ace's hand was then coated with fire. "I ate the Flame-Flame fruit, giving the power of fire and the ability to become fire."

"I ate the Human-Human fruit. It gave me the ability to walk and talk like a human and some transformations." Chopper explained.

"Fascinating. So then it's these devil fruits that have the same cosmic wavelength as the sparks. This warrants further research. Where would one find these devil fruits?" Beep-o asked.

"Well, there kind of rare and hard to find. I found mine completely by chance." Ace explained.

"Me too. I didn't even know it was a devil fruit when I ate mine." Chopper added.

"A pity then. So who's next?"

Vivi then walked up.

"I am. I use peacock slashers. They are sharp jewels at the end of a strong string."

Vivi then demonstrated her weapons.

"I see, try these."

Beep-o then pulled two orbs from the chest.

"These are called "Bworbs", they are yo-yo like weapons. They may seem like a toy, but they can carry the power of the sparks and when striking a Darkmess infused foe can deal a devasting blow." Beep-o explained.

Vivi twirled them around for a bit before catching them.

"Thank you Beep-o, these will do."

"Now you don't have to make physical contact with them. You can also release the charge at an opponent with enough momentum."

"So I have a ranged attack as well, good. Now for my spark."

A purple spark then flies up to Vivi.

"Hello, I'm Zephystar. I'll help blow all these bad guys away."

"Thank you Zephystar. I'm grateful for the help."

"All right then, who's next?"

Smoker then walked up.

"Alright so which weapon-"

"Don't need one. I also have a devil fruit, so just hand me a spark." Smoker said.

A light blue ghost like spark then flew up to Smoker.

"Hello, I'm Ethering and I can make you untouchable."

"Even against Darkmess?"

"Especially against Darkmess."

"Good, then you're with me."

"And that would leave Luffy. But since he doesn't have a body right now, he wouldn't be able to use a spark." Mario said.

"Yeah, you said you had a plan for that earlier."

"Yes I do Usopp." Mario then pulled out the stone tablet from earlier. "Doopliss's spell needs a medium to work and this tablet is it."

"So all we have to do is destroy it!" Usopp yelled in excitement.

"No, if you do that it will reform somewhere else in Alabasta and we would have to find it again. What we have to do is spell Doopliss's name on it. The way to break his spell is for the victim to say or spell his name in front of him. Luffy can't speak and Doopliss would run or interrupt Luffy if he tried to spell his name in front of him. But Doopliss's magic is tied to this tablet. If Luffy spells his name on this then he breaks the first half of the spell."

"Great! What do you mean breaks the first half?" Usopp asked.

"Well once Luffy spells Doopliss's name on this tablet, he'll get back his stretching powers and most of his strength."

"Okay, and how do we break the second half?" Nami asked.

"Oh that's the fun and easiest part. Luffy just has to kick Doopliss's ass."

Luffy then cheered, in silence, at this.

"Alright! So what are we waiting for? Spell his name already." Usopp said.

"That's the thing. Breaking and damaging the tablet are different. Doopliss has taken some of the letters off of the tablet so we can't spell his name."

The Straw-Hats gathered to look at the tablet.

"You're right. Tho O's are a gone. And there's only one S and no L." Chopper stated.

"Correct. We need to find these pieces if Luffy is ever going to have his body back." Mario said.

"Not to worry." Jeanie said. "We can scan the tablet and track down the magical signatures."

"Okay, but how are we going to fight Baroque Works and find those missing letters." Zoro said.

"Leave that to me. I already have a plan in motion to help us in this endeavor." Vivi said.

"We'll be arriving at the resistance base shortly." Beep-o stated.
