"Come on Mikasa! Focus! Don't let the cold control you, you control it!" Gray instructed.
Mikasa was shivering profoundly, slightly messing up her rhythm and her concentration.
The two were currently in a secluded section of the wilderness that was covered in snow, perfect for their training, but a bit tough for newcomers.
Gray and Mikasa were currently in their underwear, to get their body exposed to and adapt to high cold temperatures as possible (Mikasa was shocked and dangerously suspicious when Gray started stripping, but he quickly reassured her that wasn't the case and that this was needed in order to learn Ice-Make Magic, to which she followed and did the same, albeit reluctantly.)
Taking a deep breath, the soldier closed her eyes and started chanting.
"Ice-Make: Sword!"
When she did, her newfound magic transformed itself into ice, when that changed to form the shape of a razor-sharp sword. When the spell was done, Mikasa sliced to the other side then when she first held the blade.
"Now, the next object!" Gray commanded. Mikasa immediately followed suit and began casting her next spell.
"Ice-Make: Ice Cannon!" Mikasa formed a portable cannon made of ice that she promptly started firing at the nearby tree, hitting them all with perfect accuracy. When that was done, she moved on to the final spell.
"Ice-Make: Bazooka!" In her hands was a much larger RPG. She fired the ice capsule embedded inside and when it hit its target, a decent explosion occurred, taking out a good chunk of trees, and clearing away most of the snow.
"Okay, I think that's about it for the day. You did well." Her teacher praised, wearing a satisfied smirk on his face. Mikasa dispelled the cannon and took repeated breaths to ease herself.
It's been over a month and a few weeks, and things started to look up for the Survey Corps. They integrated well with their new Fairy Tail friends, and got to explore Magnolia and other areas of Fiore with all they have to offer. Besides learning about the locations, each of the soldiers were beginning to develop and master their own brand of magic.
Jean has been making progress with his Animal Take-Over Transformations thanks to the help of Lisanna. He first started out slow, trying his magic out on smaller animals and getting a feel of their natural capabilities. After some time, he's able to take over much bigger animals and can use a variety of transformations while honing and perfecting their powers.
Connie finally got the hang of the High Speed magic that Jet was teaching him. Connie was already known for being one of the speediest among the graduating 104th class, but the magic was another thing as he had trouble stopping himself from going too fast and having just as quick of a reaction time to aid alongside it. It took some trial and error along with coaching from the members of Team Shadow Gear, but now the semi-bald boy is having a better time controlling his magic.
Sasha similarly had trouble with learning her type of magic, especially since it was one that none of the current Fairy Tail members knew, but they were familiar with it. With no proper teacher to guide her, Sasha had to learn how to perceive, generate, and manipulate sound almost by herself. Her first attempts were unsuccessful, but after correcting her mistakes and practicing more, the redheaded girl was able to hear all types of sounds with minimal effort and generate small soundwaves. She also had help from Natsu, Gajeel, and Wendy, as Dragon Slayers automatically have their natural senses heightened to supernatural degrees when they get their magic. Since Sasha was already a skilled huntress with keen senses, that helped out a lot in the progress she was making.
Krista was making steady progress regarding her magic training. Due to wanting to wield two types of magic, she had to put in twice the work to build up her magic power and manifest itself into the two respective magic types she was learning. Thanks to some help from Wendy and Lucy's Celestial Spirit Leo (who tried to flirt with her, leaving her fluster and a couple individuals pissed off, as well as Lucy getting on his case), she was able to become a relatively good user at both healing and light magic.
Ymir was in a similar boat to Sasha as the magic she wanted to learn wasn't wielded by anyone currently in the guild. However, unlike her food-crazy comrade, she was able to get a quick hold on her Wave Magic. With help from some of the guild members, she was able to generate enough anti-magic to nullify their weaker and medium strength spells and is currently working on trying to build enough power to deal with stronger magic.
Reiner was doing well on learning his magic. Even though no one could teach him how to use Steel Magic, he had help from the guild's resident's Iron Dragon Slayer on reinforcing his skin and manipulating his element. His previous experience with his military training that earned him the second spot in the Top Ten helped him in learning and using magic tremendously.
Bertolt was also making progress on his style of magic. Despite ranking third in the top ten, he wasn't as naturally gifted as the others when it comes to learning magic, although he did have an easier time than most people would. Thanks to the guild's library and help from some of the members, Bertolt was able to control the nature of gravity, lowering the pressure to make things float and increasing it to force things harshly to the ground.
Annie was hesitant in learning something as she was incredibly lazy and always slacking off during her cadet days despite making 4th place. Still, she ablogied and started training in Transformation Magic. Mirajane was a good teacher and soon, Annie could change into anything, and was comfortable in moving and using her altered form.
Armin was getting the hang of Solid Script. Being a book nerd and getting help from Levy assisted in him writing out words with different properties and using them effectively. Some words were harder than others, but he was determined to master the magic which impressed the bluenette.
As for Mikasa, she was known for being a prodigy whenever it came to physical activities and that certainly showed in her training. The magic was hard to get working at first, but once she got down the basics, Mikasa was able to wield Ice-Make magic efficiently, able to create many objects out of ice much to Gray's amazement.
The veterans also made leaps in their magical training as much as the cadets.
Oruo had trouble learning the concept of Dark Ecriture much to his dismay. The concept of writing down runes while following the rules frustrated him. It took him a while, but he eventually was able to get down the magic and use it profoundly. Freed wasn't really impressed with the man's attitude, but he had to admit Oruo came very far ever since his rough beginnings.
Eld was a skilled user of blades, so picking Sword Magic seemed like it was the natural thing to do. It proved to be a good choice as the veteran was able to use different types of swords for a variety of techniques and even use ones with elemental properties. Erza aiding him proved to be a major help in his progress (Even with the scarlet wizard's questionable teaching methods, which left him wiped out after each session).
Gunter worked with Max in order to learn Sand Magic. They started off by trying to manipulate existing sand and commanding it to do whatever the user wants. Once they got that down, Gunter was learning how to generate his own sand, which he is making steady progress on.
Petra was taking her training slowly, but seriously. With Wendy guiding her, Petra was able to generate and manipulate existing wind to use at her leisure. Some spells were more difficult than others, but the soldier was able to get them down and wield them effortlessly.
Mike chose to do Animal Possession and it seemed like a good choice despite the dark nature of the power. Nab looked over his training due to being a proficient user and it seemed like the magic was a good choice for the older man. Mike, much like Sasha, is also known for his keen senses, in this case his smell, which only amplified when using the spirits of animals who also had a good nose.
Moblit liked the concept of Pict Magic. The ability to make your drawings come to life fascinated him and it was a good fit since he's always carrying a sketchbook to draw down important things. Reedus and him started out small, before eventually drawing a variety of animals, objects, elements and other things to make them alive.
Erwin was slowly mastering the concept of Smoke Magic. With Wakaba's help, the leader was able to use a Caster variant of his magic to command and make smoke out of thin air.
Hange was excelling in Gun Magic. She experimented with different firearms and got used to how magical ammunition worked in this world. Alzack and Bisca acted as her teacher and were satisfied with her accomplishments even with the woman's eccentric personality.
Levi took a strong liking to Requip. He had tried out different weapons and armors, both that were made specifically together, and to mix them up together for different combinations. Like Mikasa, Levi almost instantly got his magic down. It was as natural to him as using the Scouts gear and Erza was amazed with his development.
That was the case for the time they spent ever since they got here. After their training was done, the two Ice-Make wizards got dressed in their normal clothes and began packing up to go back to the guild. The girls stayed with the female members at Fairy Hills, while the guys would either stay in the guildhall, or stay with the male members at their homes.
"Nicely done, Mikasa. I've never seen someone master a type of magic in such a quick time before."
"Thanks Gray, I couldn't have done it without you." She replied. Although she wasn't the type to get close to people right away, she had to admit she did find a friend in Gray after he became her teacher. Learning the concepts of Ice-Make Magic was an interesting experience for her and being able to create anything only limited by her imagination proved to be extremely valuable. However, through the last month, her head was still preoccupied by one thing. One that Gray was able to tell when it was on her mind.
"Still worrying about your friend Eren?" He asked. Mikasa stifled, but she nodded nonetheless.
"I don't know where he's at and what he;s been doing. We looked everywhere all over Magnolia and the border, but still no sign of him." She explained. Gray looked at her sympathetically.
"I may not know much about him. But from what you and the others said about him, he's not the type to give up. I'm sure he's found some help and is trying to find you guys as well." He said.
Mikasa gave a small, hopeful smile at him. "Thanks Gray."
"You're welcome. Now come on, let's head back to the guild. The others are probably already there." Gray responded. She nodded and soon the two headed back to the guildhall.
When the Ice Wizards came to the guild, they soon saw all of their friends already there. Gray's guildmates were going about their usual activities while Mikasa's comrades were discussing and showing off the progress they made in their magic training.
Jean, Connie, and Sasha were in their own little group. Same with Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie. Krista and Ymir were by themselves, Section Commander Hange was with Moblit rambling about something while the poor man had to sit through it all. The SOP Squad was conversing among themselves, and Commander Erwin was with his right hand man and other section commander discussing. As for Armin, he was reading a book at one of the tables when they saw the two walk in and waved at them.
Mikasa sat by Armin at one of the tables while Gray went over to the bar to get something to eat.
"So how's your training been going so far Mikasa?" Armin asked.
"It's going well." She responded. "I've been able to create more bigger and complex Ice-Make Spells with each passing day. I'm hoping to eventually re-create the ODM gear that functions using Ice-Make Magic."
"Considering you're the number one prodigy in our class, I'm not surprised you picked it up so quickly." He added. Mikasa just nodded. "How's your training coming, Armin?
"It's been going well too. Solid Script Magic seems like the perfect fit for me. I don't have to do anything physically taxing, and being able to create any words and having that word's meaning come to life is just fascinating." Armin explained. Mikasa nodded again, not caring about the material too much, but glad that her friend was able to find a magic suitable for him.
Jean, Sasha, and Connie sooned came over to join the chat.
"I heard that you guys have been doing well with your magic." Jean started.
"Yeah, we have. How have you guys been doing with your types of magic?"
"Well, for one I'm much better at High Speed than before. I'm already one of the speediest guys ever, and now that I'm much faster, I can go large distances in a blink of an eye." Connie bragged.
"Yeah, after hitting a solid wall the first thirty times." Jean mentioned.
"Oh yeah, I like to see you say those words again after I leave you in the dust horseface!" Connie snapped.
"Well, this "horseface" can quite literally quick your ass over those miles you keep preaching with no effort." Jean retorted. The two boys got into each other's faces, but that were pushed away when Sasha got in the middle between them.
"Any who. My training is going great! Just watch this!" Sasha snapped her fingers and from that, a small soundwave was generated in the air. The dragon slayers (and Mike) immediately picked up the sound to their enhanced hearing.
"Sorry guys, just me!" Sasha shouted, after which the Dragon Slayers (and Mike) turned back to do their activities.
After which, the other cadets came over to their table.
"So, all of you have been doing well in your new training?" Reiner questioned.
"Yep. How about you big guy?" Connie replied. Reiner smirked and lifted his right arm. He rolled up the sleeve and soon, his whole arm began turning a bright, silver color. The other cadets were impressed with the display, except for some of the girls.
"My new Steel Magic is working wonders." Reiner deactivated his magic and turned to Bertolt.
"How about you, getting the hang of Gravity Magic yet?"
"Oh yes, yes I have." Bertolt said quickly. He too brought his arm up, and soon the area where the table was covered began to reverse gravity, lifting the items off of it. The other cadets were impressed. He canceled his magic and the gravity returned to normal.
"What about you Ymir?" He looked over to the girl. She shrugged her arms.
"Ah, it's nothing too bad all considered. I'm getting used to the properties of Wave and I've been getting better each day." She then smirked. "Who knows? Maybe one day I'll be powerful enough that none of you will be able to touch me." Reiner gave a hard look at the sentence.
"Oh is that so? I don't think your anti-magic will be able to do a thing against my steel armor."
"You wanna take that chance, beefcake." The two walked over until they were standing in front of each other, staring each other down. Annie sighed at the scene.
"Okay, okay." Krista moved in between them, pushing them away.
"There's no need to start fighting." She pleaded. The two looked at her, then back at each other. They complied, but only because they are fond of her.
"What about you Krista? How are you and Annie doing?" Armin asked.
"Oh, I'm doing good. Magic was difficult enough as it is, but learning two of them at once? I had to put in twice the effort to manage." Krista elaborated.
"Ah, I know you can take care of that stuff. You're an angel after all you can do anything." Ymir complimented, getting her to blush.
Since she knew it was coming, Annie answered before the question was asked. "I've been doing fine in Transformation Magic, thank you." She said shortly.
"Can.. you give an example." Sasha asked. Annie sighed and lifted her hand up. It soon turned into a sharp blade.
"Huh, that's useful." Jean commented. Annie didn't say anything, turning her hand back to normal.
All of a sudden, they heard the guild members chattering and looking at the stage.
"Is it around that time now?" Connie asked.
"Yeah, the results are about to be announced." Bertolt answered.
Other than the Scouts getting used to their new powers and environment, another big event was coming up, one that the Fairy Tail wizards were preparing for: The traditional S-Class Trials.
Makarov stood at the stage and made his announcement. Next to him were the S-Class Mages of Fairy Tail: Erza Scarlet, Mirajane Strauss, and a man with a black coat and orange hair: Gildart Clives, Fairy Tail's Ace.
"Attention everyone. The moment you've all been waiting for is finally here: The S-Class Trials!"
The whole guild erupted with cheer, then quickly settled down to hear the rest of the speech.
"As you know, only the most skilled wizards and witches in both mind and body can be chosen to participate for their chance to become an S-Class Wizard. The following have worked themselves to the bone for the opportunity to compete and I'm pleased to announce their hard work wasn't in vain." Makarov called out the names of the members competing.
"Levy Mcgarden" The bluenette bookworm had a smile on her face at being picked.
"Cana Alberona" The alcoholic gave off an indifferent grunt. This was her third time being picked and although she was tired of her previous failures, she was determined to win this time.
"Mest Gryder." The wizard gave off a nod.
"Gray Fullbuster" The Ice-Make mage gave off a satisfied smirk.
"Elfman Strauss" The middle Strauss sibling gave off a firm grunt, ready to prove he was a real man.
"Freed Justine" The greenette had a small smile and nodded.
"Juvia Lockser" The Water Mage was gleeful that she was picked, ready to test her strength and hoping to be closer to Gray during this event.
"And Natsu Dragneel" The pinkette Fire Dragon fist bumped the air and jumped up, ready and raring to go.
Everyone clapped for the members that were chosen. Some were disappointed that they weren't picked, but there was always next time and they were happy for their friends that made it
"With that out of the way, let me make a couple more announcements. Your fellow guild mates that have already been chosen as S-Class will be personally there to impede your progress. If you want to proceed, you must make it past them." The chosen candidates looked a bit fearful at the fact they will have the strongest of their guild. They can all be scary in their own ways, especially Gildarts. The contestants were dreading fighting him, except for Natsu who seemed greatly pleased.
"Each participant will pick a partner to aid them in the Trials. If they win, they will both advance to the rank of S-Class." Makarov said.
With that statement said, the partnerships were formed.
Natsu and Happy were already working hard to get nominated, so they were automatically together, leaving Lucy in a bit of dismay since they were a team. She ended up with Cana instead.
Freed and Bickslow teamed up, leaving Evergreen in the same situation as her Celestial Magic wielding guildmate, making her go with Elfman much to both of their embarrassment.
Wendy went with Doranbolt at his request. He seemed like a nice man and was sure they could help each other out during the Trials, although Carla kept her eye on him since she was protective of Wendy and doesn't trust most of the guild members to be good role models for her.
Gray immediately picked Loke as his partner as he didn't want to deal with Juvia's shenanigans in regards to her affection for him. The rain woman was saddened by this, but Lisanna chooses her as her partner, to which Juvia begrudgingly goes along with.
Levy was nervous as this is her first time in the Trials and was worried she wouldn't do much because she's not much of a fighter compared to her guildmates. She then found herself being lifted in the air by Gajeel much to the dismay of Jet and Droy and was trying to get herself free. He swore that he'll "make her bigger than she's ever been" while calling her a little girl, making the bookworm blush. The other two members of Shadow Gear dropped their heads in despair while Lily looked at them with a smile.
Carla was looking troubled at the whole thing. She was getting a very bad feeling about the whole thing. She gasped as she suddenly found herself seeing a bunch of flashing images all at once.
She was a huge tree-like structure crumbling, the sorrowful faces of Cana and Natsu, a hand nearby, and an unknown young man in dark clothing. What shocked her more was that there was an image of large figures that looked human, but weren't. Finally, there were dark, glowing green eyes with a murderous look in them. Carla snapped out of it and was brought to the present time, though not less shocked at what she discovered.
"What was that premonition?" Carla gasped. She was snapped out of her daze again when the master spoke up.
"Before we depart, I'd like to say one more thing: As the circumstances are different, I'd like to have the Survey Corps and their members come with us as honorary guests to watch the S-Class Trials firsthand!" Everyone was stunned at the guild master's proclamation, except for a few.
The soldiers were stunned that they could go with them despite not being in the Trials themselves.
"Wow, we got to an island!" Connie exclaimed.
"I wonder what kind of wild creatures we'll find over there." Sasha dreamed, her mouth drooling at the sight.
"It'd be really exciting to see more of this world, don't you think Mikasa?" Armin asked, clearly excited by the prospect to go out and explore more of this strange world. Mikasa just nodded, more composed but also interested.
"This could be a chance to watch and learn to improve ourselves." Gunther said.
"I do not believe I need it, but I will take the opportunity to become stronger if needed." Oruo responded.
"You better Oruo. Overconfidence has gotten a lot of people in trouble, and if you keep this up, that trouble will come and find you." Eld warned. Oruo just scoffed at the statement. From the sidelines, the older vets were overlooking the reactions of their younger members.
"I figured that they would appreciate this chance." Erwin said to his colleagues.
"You bet commander! I'm pumped up to see all of them duke it out with their own brand of magic. Oh I can't wait to see it!" Hange exclaimed.
"Tch, I don't really care. But if this gives us the chance to improve ourselves in our struggle against the titans, then I'll take it." Levi stated.
The vets replayed the conversation they had with Makarov when they first got here
One Month Ago
"Let me get this straight. All of you come from 3 giant walls over 50 feet tall. You believe humanity was extinct for over 107 years due to lack of outside information. You were trapped inside of those walls because "humanity's greatest predator" as you call it, the "Titans", are giant naked, humanoid monsters with great resemblance to humans, but devour any in sight." Makarov began. They were in his office as Erwin, Mike, Hange, and Levi were standing in front of him.
"Humanity inside the walls have created special equipment called the "Omni-Directional Mobility Gear" to combat these monsters. 5 years before, the Walls were breached by never before seen Titans called the "Colossal Titan" and "Armored Titan", forcing you to retreat further into the walls and leaving the outer one, "Wall Maria" completely infested with Titans. And now during your 57th Expedition, the sun just all of sudden reacted uncontrollably and somehow transported a select few of you here in front of our guild while the rest of your soldiers are nowhere to be seen." Makarov finished. He sighed greatly
"Did I get all that?"
"Yes, that's the situation as we know it." Erwin confirmed. Makarov sat there for a moment, taking everything in.
"As ludicrous as it seems, after what my children and I have been through recently, I can't call your story false." The guild master said. "Though I must admit, how this all happened so suddenly is what puzzles me. I have never heard of the Walls before, neither together or separate. And although the Titans have been talked about in myths and legends, I don't believe they are the same as the Titans you're describing." He said.
"You must understand Master Makarov. Our people, we haven't had any contact with the outside world. We believe that any remnants of human life that did exist outside were wiped out by the Titans. We don't know if this place, Earthland, is what lies beyond the walls, or if we are somewhere completely different." Erwin explained.
Makarov widened his eyes at his explanation. Could it be?
"I suppose that it's impossible to get the answers now. But if I had to make an assumption." The soldiers were listening. The guild master looked them dead in the eye.
"I don't think you're in your own world." The soldiers gasped.
"What?!" Mike sputtered, being one of the few times he's ever talked.
"That's impossible! Are you saying we're in a completely different world?!" Hange shouted.
Levi's eyes were shot open. This was one of the few times his calm composure was broken.
"Can you please elaborate, Master Makarov?" Erwin questioned, just as surprised but more calm than his subordinates, and was greatly interested at the possibility.
"My children and I have recently gone through something similar. It's not out of the realm of question, and it would explain a lot of questions you possibly have, like why there is no record on the Walls, no sighting of the Titans, and why none of you are familiar with the concept of Magic." That last part caught the Scouts attention.
"Magic?" Erwin questioned. Makarov got on top of his desk and began his explanation.
"Magic is a life force that exists in all of us. It combines the physical embodiment of our spirit with the spiritual flow of nature, which produces the very essence of magic. Magic can take many different states, and I guarantee that there exists at least one type of magic that is suitable for one person." The vets were gobsmacked.
"Can you demonstrate this "Magic"?" Erwin asked. Makarov nodded, Hange taking out her notepad. Makarov began glowing, a thin outline of light covering him. The Scouts were amazed by this, but it'd paled into what was about to happen next.
Makarov suddenly grew to become almost twice his size." He opened his eyes, which were glowing yellow. The Scouts stared at him in shock, Levi trying to compose himself into not attacking him since his size and appearance gave off a strong impression of a Titan.
Hange didn't have that same reaction. Her mouth grew wide and she looked like she was about to hyperventilate.
"OH MY GOD MASTER MAKAROV YOU ARE GORGEOUS. THAT MAGIC IS AMAZING!" She squealed like a pig. The short, now very big, guild master sweatdropped.
"Is she always like this?" Makarov asked, his voice much deeper due to his size.
"You have no idea." Levi responded. Makarov went back to normal, and composed himself.
"I apologize. That might not have been the correct one to showcase considering your circumstance. But that was one of many things to expect from the usage of Magic."
The soldiers turned to each other, taking everything they just witnessed.
Magic, in the flesh.
"Would it be possible for my soldiers and I to use Magic?" The commander asked. Makarov pondered, but smiled at the younger leader.
"I say take the chance. I know you want to free your homeland from the oppressive rule of the Titans, and if this can give you the opportunity, I would take it." Hange looked excited, while the others, especially the commander, looked interested.
"However." Makarov's stern tone got the soldiers attention. "While it is powerful, magic can be a very fickle thing. It's very easy for someone to dabble into it and end up with unintended consequences. Proceed with caution." The Scouts were taken aback by the dangerous tone in the guild master's voice. They could tell he was serious, and they would be wise to heed his words since they are completely foreign to the concept.
"There's another thing you should be aware of." Makarov added, getting their attention once again.
"What is it?" Levi asked.
"Our guild is doing its yearly tradition of the S-Class Trials, a series of tests that allows the members of our guild to rank up to the title of S-Class. We will be going to a place that is considered our guild's sacred land: Tenrou Island." The scouts were intrigued once again. "You can experience more of our world and learn more about what it means to be a wizard."
The scouts looked to each for one last time, mainly the vets towards the commander. He pondered on it for a moment. He then walked up to the guild master and smiled.
"We accept your offer." Makarov smiled back.
"Excellent my boy." He hopped down the desk.
"Let's go back downstairs and give everyone the news." The guild master announced. Erwin and his section commanders agreed and went back downstairs to be treated with a rather pleasant surprise.
The four were taken back to the present as the master finished his announcements.
"Take this as an opportunity. You will learn more about the world around you and learn from the tests our members will go through as you continue to grow and experience new things." Makarov explained to the Scouts (and Annie).
That made more sense to everyone. At the beginning of the next day, the guild members that were competing as well as acting as obstacles themselves in the Trials to test their guildmates along with the soldiers said their goodbyes to everyone else who wished them well.
"Have fun out there!"
"Enjoy the trip!"
"Good luck guys!"
For the Survey Corps, it was quite the experience for them. They've never traveled by water, not by this much. Everyone was quite excited and curious as to what this trip could show them. Some of them, especially Armin and Erwin, were more rivet than others.
They headed out on a ship, much to Natsu's horror due to having bad motion sickness as a negative side effect of his magic. It wasn't long until they made it to their destination:
Tenrou Island.
At the cave hidden deep in the forest, an intense training session was going down.
A young teen was currently practicing his acrobatics by using his gear to test himself on his movement, reaction speed, and his body's tolerance to fast speed so his proficiency with the equipment would grow. Being in an enclosed space and having many spires hanging from the ceiling gave him plenty of areas for his hooks to latch onto. But at the same time, that gives him less room to glide around, and if he were to slip up, the mistakes would prove to be painful.
Right now Eren was keeping his focus on traveling through the claustrophobic space with as high of precision as he could muster while keeping his cool in the midst of it. He was currently traveling through a much narrower section of the caverns, making his judgment on where to go and how to get there all the more crucial.
The path was littered with cave spires from both the ceiling and floor, sharp on the tips and having a blunt and piercing exterior that would make it all the more deadly if someone were to hit them, especially as high momentums.
The soldier made sure to scope out the area as best as he could, then by using his hooks and moving his body at the right angle, Eren was able to avoid the spires that plagued his path, having a much easier time than his first attempts.
But that wasn't all. Once he was through, Eren gathered a huge breath of air in his mouth that made his cheeks puff out.
"Fire Demon Rage!" With his battle cry, he unleashed a huge torrent of blue-colored flames that took the shape of a massive spiraling cylinder. The spell collided with many of the spires, destroying them in the middle of the process. Once that attack was over, a good chunk of the spires were destroyed. Eren made sure to count how many were blown up.
"72, 73, 74, 75. 75 in total. That's my current limit right now." He noted.
Over the last month and few weeks, Eren Jaeger was worked down to the bone, in some cases almost literally.
While he was under Kinvinaris wings, the demon put him through training that made all the practices he endured as a cadet look like a simple exercise with training wheels, which wasn't too long ago. These morbid training methods included trying to jump from rock pillar to pillar to avoid fire underneath, all the while caring a bunch of rocks on his back that were both painful and inhibited his movement, trying to break solid stone with his bare hands while trying to avoid getting hit by fireballs, and sparring with the big guy himself in human form. These training methods were so intense, Eren was surprised he hadn't died yet, not that he would allow it.
The first exercise constantly had him stumbling and if he didn't miss the jump because of the massive weight he was carrying, that weight would make him lose his footing and he would end up falling over anyway. The second exercise wasn't much better as his pain receptors would kick in hard as the force would flood his arms and cause tremendous aching afterwards, not to mention the fireballs that'd try to hit him, and if they did, he would be pushed back with a nasty burn. Fighting Kinvinaris in his human form was his most difficult trial, as his opponent being much bigger than him automatically put him at a advantage over him, add on to the fact the fire abilities, his supernatural capabilities like greater speed and strength, and that none of blows could do a thing against him was all the more challenging. There's a reason humanity invented the ODM gear and he would go Titan should he fight with his hands, but that wasn't an option.
Even with the ridiculously dangerous aspects of the exercises, they all served a purpose. The platform challenge served to test Eren's speed and agility all while increasing it, the stone breaking acted as a way to build up tolerance in hitting things that the normal human body couldn't break while testing his reflexes, quick-thinking, and reaction time, and the spars were a way for the soldier to prepare to fight against larger foes without needing to rely on his gear or his other powers.
During his training regime, Eren had gotten closer to Kinvinaris much to his surprise. The fire demon respected him for both his powers and tenacity and in turn, Eren respected him for teaching him his magic while also being a powerful creature. Kinvinaris served as a father figure to Eren, which he appreciated but it brought up the situation with his real father and it made him scowl.
The demon taught him all he can about his signature magic: Fire Demon Slayer Magic. It was a long process since Eren didn't have any Magic Power within him and thus had to work on absorbing the Ethernano, the source of Magic Power, in the atmosphere to build up his container. Once that was done, Eren started channeling it into his magic. He took on various characteristics of a demon and because he was learning Fire Magic, he also took on traits exclusive to fire demons. It wasn't long until Eren was able to control, manipulate, and build up resistance to fire, including demonic fire, thanks to his hard work and determination.
Other than his physical and magical training, Kinvinaris also taught him about the world he was currently in. The history of Demons and Demon Slayer Magic, the origins of magic in general, how they are used in daily life, and the many types existing, the different landscape, regions, continents, countries, and cultures. Eren was fascinated by what he learned. He always yearned to escape the confines he called his home to explore the outside world and now it looked like that dream was finally made a reality.
As for his gear, although it was burnt it doesn't mean it wasn't salvageable. After taking it apart and studying the individual sections, Eren was able to rebuild a new one thanks to materials in Kinvinaris's cavern. Not only that, but it was made to be magic resistant and work in tangent with his magic.
Eren was also taught how to train in his titan form. Like in human form, him and Kinvinaris spared so that Eren would be both be able to control his form better and learn how to fight against giant opponents that can easily put a fight, since despite being powerful his titan form was, it was also extremely vulnerable, even punching things at full force with his own arms could tear them to shreds.
Right now Eren was busy training with both his gear and his magic so that he could build experience for both and can combine them for new attacks. Kinvinaris came to check up on him and give him the big news. He was impressed with the results of Eren's latest practice.
"Working hard again huh Eren?" He asked. The soldier looked at the demon and smiled.
"Yep. I can't afford to falter. I will get back home and I will complete my objective. I will also reunite with my friends and comrades so that we can all go back together." He declared. The fire demon smiled, glad that the boy hadn't lost his will. That was one of the things he liked about him. However, that smile turn into a small frown
"Eren, I think it's time for you to leave." The soldier was shocked.
"Already, but I just met you! I've only been here for over a month." He ranted.
"I understand Eren, but you can't stay here. You said it yourself that you need to get back home. I only took you under my wing so that I can prepare you for the dangers of my world." The demon explained. Eren looked down and the demon crouched to be on his level.
"You know." Eren looked the giant demon in the eye. "I've never been really fond of humans, as per our nature, but at the same time I never really hated them either." Kinvinaris stood back up, continuing to look at his pupil.
"I figured that there were humans out there that would be worthy in our eyes and, lo and behold you came along." He said with a grin. Eren returned it.
"Although it was short, the time I spent with you was the best moments in my life and I will always treasure them." The demon finished.
"I know that you will do amazing things, Eren. Just keep moving forward, no matter what obstacles in any form come in your way." Eren beamed at the praise and regained his iconic determined expression.
"Thank you for everything Kinvinaris, I will always be grateful for what you've done for me, even though we tried to kill each other when we met." He teased, making the demon chuckle under his breath.
"I'll make sure to seal this cave so that no other Demon Slayers will find it should there still be some out there." The scout reassured, with Kinvinaris nodding in understanding. Eren might be an exception, but most Demon Slayers wouldn't hesitate to take the chance to kill a powerful fire demon for their pride and bloodlust. Eren also wanted to make sure that his teacher and so far the only friend he made in this place was protected. As powerful as he was, he was still recovering his lost strength from being comatose for so long, and someone might take that chance to end him for good.
After that, Eren gathered all his supplies. His clothes, gear, map, food and water, and some books to help him understand the world he's in.
With all that settled, Eren took his leave and soon found himself at the cave entrance where he first found it. With one last farewell to his teacher, and using a magic seal to close off and hide the entrance, the young soldier began his journey into the outside, ready to take on anything it had to offer.
Author's Note:
And here's Chapter 3. Everyone has gotten a good grip on their magic and now the Tenrou Island arc is upon us. From here on out, two stories will be happening simultaneously: One with the Survey Corps and Fairy Tail, and one with Eren on his solo journey. I'll make sure to give each side a fair amount of time so one doesn't outshine the other. With that said, some chapters will be focusing on one of the sides, and others will be focusing on both of them at the same time.
Speaking of which, the next chapter might be a little while, as I need to get my bearings first on where I want the story to go before I begin writing.
Until then, I hoped you enjoy and I'll see you next chapter
