Percy was at a lost of words, how could he shortly explain what happened to him in three months? His brain was going a million miles per second and had no signs of hitting a brake. As he tried to stutter a response to Thalia's question, a group of whispering people started to crowd them.
"I can explain later but I don't feel like being in the next segment of family drama so.." Percy trailed off eyeing the curious teenagers who creeped in eagerly.
Thalia acknowledged the other students around them. She rolled her eyes and loudly exclaimed, "What? Do you have nothing better to do than to watch two relatives hash it out? Why don't y'all go mind your business somewhere else - Do not take another step closer Drew!"
She left that threat hanging and shoved passed a flawless teen girl whom Percy assumed was Drew, and motioned for him to follow her.
Percy trailed after Thalia toward a row of classrooms, the group stared at them as they left, but luckily none of them followed the two cousins.
Thalia finally stopped in front of a classroom and knocked before entering. Percy shyly followed her in not knowing what else to do. To his surprise the room wasn't empty, there was a middle aged man in a wheelchair sitting in front of the teacher's desk.
"Hey Mr. Brunner, I'm sorry but can I use the classroom for a minute? I'm showing Percy around and..." Thalia trailed off trying to think of an excuse.
"Absolutely!" He wheeled his way towards Percy offering a hand to shake, "You must be Percy. It will be a pleasure for me to have you as my student as I believe you are in my ninth period along with Thalia and Jason. I'm very excited to have all three of you in my last period of the day." He ended with a smile and Percy shook his hand. He wheeled himself to the door. "I'll be back in thirty minutes before classes start. Hopefully that gives you enough time."
"It does, thank you so much again Mr. Brunner!" Thalia said as he left. Thalia plopped down in a chair and stared at Percy with a tilted head, "You have a lot of explaining to do." Her eyes lingered on his shortened limb.
Percy took a seat and sighed, "I honestly don't know where to begin... Has Zeus mentioned anything?"
Thalia scrunched her eyebrows in thought, "No." She paused before snorting, "He doesn't mention anything that doesn't involve him anyways."
That's true. "I guess I'll start with what happened in May. I remember packing for the summer trip, then everything changed." Percy closed his eyes as he recalled the screams of his dying mother and stepfather
"What changed? Did you get attacked by a shark when you were helping Poseidon on the job? Is that why you are in New York? Is your Mom here? She makes the best cookies man."
Percy held up a hand to signal for her to stop, "No Thalia. On the way to the airport there was a car accident killing both my mom and Paul which took half of my leg with it."
Thalia's eyes were the size of saucer plates, and her mouth was slightly agape in shock. It reminded Percy of a fish out of water. "I-um. Geez well.. I-Uh. How do I... Percy I'm so sorry".
Any other time this would have been amusing to see Thalia in this state. But given the circumstances Percy didn't feel like commenting on her lack of words. Instead he nodded his head and continued.
"That's why I'm in New York. I'm staying with my dad, stepmom, and Triton." Percy shrugged again, "Just got to New York a week ago. Still adapting to the situation and all."
Thalia drummed her ringed fingers on the desk, "I- my father didn't mention anything about an accident, neither had Jason or Nico, they probably don't know either..." She trailed off. "We need to tell them...Hey what is your lunch period?"
Percy was taken back by the last question, but pulled out his schedule from his pocket. "6th period. Why?"
"Great! Both Jason and I have lunch at sixth period, you can come join us at the table. Plus Annabeth will be there, you remember Annabeth don't you?" She wriggled her brow.
Percy's hand shot up to his cheek and he subconsciously rubbed it, "How could I not? She nearly took out my tooth when I was nine, just because I said her mother had owl eyes. She ruined Nico's seventh birthday party."
Thalia laughed, "That memory still cracks me up til this day. Ugh, I kinda miss those days. It was before Bianca..." She cleared her throat "Since we are talking about class periods, why don't you tell me your schedule?" She asked trying to change the subject.
Percy also went with it since he was also uncomfortable talking about their dead cousin, "Okay. For first period I have Economics with Mr. Morpheus".
Thalia snorted, "Good luck staying awake in that class, continue."
"Alright, I got English with Mr. Charon for second period."
"Ah the depressed teacher who complains about not being paid enough." Thalia sighed, "Wait until you get into Romeo and Juliet, there's a rumor that he goes into a manic episode every year during that specific lesson plan. And for your third period?"
"Ooh I have Marine Biology with Mrs. Nereid" Percy smiled.
"Of course you choose that class. I haven't heard much of that teacher though, so not much I could really tell you, next class."
"Study hall with Mr. Hedge."
"Coach Hedge, hah! Better not touch his bat or he'll swing it where the sun doesn't shine,
unless you want to be also missing your balls"-
"Ok Thals, I got it, I won't touch the bat. After Study hall I have computer strategies with Ms. Hecate."
Thalia nodded in response, "Alright next period is lunch. I believe all of us have that period - Oh I forgot! I get to introduce you to Grover as well. Okay, what's your seventh?"
"I have criminal justice with Mr. Hermes".
"Watch out for his demonstrations with the wallet." Thalia said texting rapidly from her phone.
"My wallet? Why would I... never mind, I probably don't want to know anyways. Next period I have Algebra with Miss Dodds."
Thalia glanced above her phone mid-text to raise an eyebrow. "Sorry Perce, you are not going to like that one. She literally crawled from the underworld to create havoc amongst the students."
"Great, I'll be looking forward to that class. Last I have Greek Mythology with Mr. Brunner, who I assume is the teacher I just met."
"Yes, our dads know him too. Mr. Brunner was a classmate with them back in the day and I believe they're still friends today. He is really cool and is easily one of the best teachers I ever had."
"He does seem nice and- wait who are you texting?" Percy asked.
"Jason. I told Jason that you are attending this school and have lunch with us. I haven't said much more than that but he has a lot of questions."
"Yeah, I bet he does, but I should start heading to class. I'm sorry Thalia for not getting in contact sooner but-"
"Percy it's okay. Seriously given the circumstances I understand and I'm sure Jason will understand. Hell, I even believe Nico will understand."
"Thanks Thals. I'll see you at lunch."
They said their goodbyes as Percy headed towards economic's class. Luckily economic's was on the one first floor, so he didn't need to use the elevator.
Percy was one of the last students who entered the class and everyone eyed his leg and crutches. The teacher gave him a bored stare before standing up once everyone was seated.
"Hello sophomores my name is Mr. Morpheus and I'll be teaching you the wonders of economics this year. You will get to know how-"
Percy couldn't help but silently yawn as his voice was surprisingly soothing. Percy was half listening to what the teacher was saying as he gave them a introduction to economics.
"Now if you will open your textbooks to page 4 we can start with-"
Percy's head slammed into his desk as he was fast asleep.
Gladly, the bell woke him up. He exited the classroom, not knowing what was taught in the last forty minutes of class. He headed over to the elevator as his next class was on the third floor. As Percy was waiting for the elevator, another kid with crutches stops besides him in need of the elevator as well.
"Bahh, they really need to make passing periods longer. It's hard to move around with these things." The other kid commented.
Percy hummed in agreement not knowing what else to say. The elevator door dinged and the doors opened, both of them stepped in and hit the button indicating the floor they want to be on.
"I'm Grover by the way. I don't think I've seen you in the halls last year, are you new this year?"
"Yes, I'm new here, I used to live back in San Francisco. My name is Percy".
The elevator stopped on the third floor, Percy stepped out of the elevator as Grover said a farewell to him as he left.
Two students ran past Percy almost knocking him over. He let out a huff and mumbled "rude" underneath his breath.
As Percy hobbled in the classroom the two students who almost ran him over turned around and greeted him with big smiles. They seem to be twins because Percy couldn't tell them apart from each other.
"Hi! My name is Conner." The one on the left held out his hand.
Percy hesitantly propped his crutch to his side freeing a hand. Connor yanked his hand and shook it like his life depended on it.
"My turn! Hi! My name is Travis, the more attractive and cooler brother."
"Hey-" the other twin protested.
"Excuse him, he's still in denial. Though as the better Stoll - Woah man! What happened to your leg?! That's so cool!"
Percy stared at the brothers wide eyed, he had zero clue what is going on. "I-um-uh..."Percy scratched the back of his neck nervously.
"Really Travis? You have to interrogate everyone you meet? Plus not everyone needs to disclose their disabilities. He's obviously new around here." The girl who sat at the front scolded the twins before turning back to him.
"Sorry about those two, my name is Katie. What's yours?"
"Percy." He eyed the room for an empty desk away from the twins.
Unfortunately, once Percy found a seat the twins plopped down into two empty desks around him, but before they could say anything the teacher walked in. He was a middle aged man who looked like the world was upon his shoulders.
"Alright class. Here are the rules: Leave me alone; don't make a nuisance; and mostly no POMEGRANATES! No no no POMEGRANATES!!!!" The class stares at him in shock as his voice boomed over them. "Do I make my self clear?" He growled out the last part and the class can only mumble a 'yes sir' in response.
"Good. I'm Mr. Charon and as a-" he was cut off as a paper airplane smacked him in the middle of his forehead. The twins snickering only proved Percy's theory of suspects.
The teacher turned brighter than a tomato before plopping down onto a chair and dramatically leaned back with his head pointing back at the ceiling. "I don't get paid enough to deal with this."
It was finally third period and Percy made his way towards Marine Biology. Instead of taking a seat in the back like he would have usually done, he sat front and center. One by one the students piled in and no even gave Percy a second glance, which he very much appreciated.
The teacher hurriedly in after them and started to get her papers in order, too busy to glance up at her students.
Percy had a sinking feeling like he met her once, but he couldn't place a finger on why she felt so familiar.
"Alright class I'm gonna take attendance, raise your hand and say here out loud so I can remember who the face and voice belongs to."
"Is Will Solace here?.."
"Here." the kid besides Percy raised his hand and the teacher smiled kindly at him. She called names out for awhile, but she paused on one, her eyebrows furrowed.
"Wait... is this... no it can't be." She mumbled but loud enough for Percy to hear. She then cleared her throat and glanced back up at the students, "Is Perseus Jackson here?".
He raised his hand and said "Here." Her eyes widen in recognition, Percy desperately racked his brain on why she looked familiar.
"Percy! I haven't seen you this summer or your father for that manner. I guess I was too busy I never got a chance to talk to my father to question it. I'm so happy to have you as a student this year!"
That's when a memory resurfaced. Percy was at his father's rescue aquarium and a young woman named Ariel was helping her father Nerus around the aquarium. She was a regular volunteer there and was very nice. He put the two together and made the conclusion that Ariel and Mrs. Nereid are the same person.
Percy smiled back. He never knew what she did for a living, but teaching fit her personality. At least he knew for a fact that this teacher is very reliable.
Percy was happy to get away from both of his study hall supervisor and his computer strategy class.
In study hall, their supervisor is quite an asshole. Instead of the lax nature of study hall he was used to in California, this class was boot camp in comparison. The coach walks through the aisles of desks with a baseball bat to make sure no student fell asleep during his supervision. The coach also has a niche to call everyone a 'cupcake' except for Clarisse, obvious favoritism there.
As for Percy's fifth period, it wasn't that bad. It was a bit annoying when the teacher kept putting locks on their computers to show them how easy it can be to manipulate a computer. Percy vaguely remembered the teacher commenting on a project they will do during second semester.
Percy made his way down to the cafeteria for his lunch hour. There was an abundance of students in there waiting for their food. He scanned through the heaps of students sitting at their tables for a familiar face.
He saw Thalia in the amidst of students, she waved him over to a circular table in the back. Percy smiled at her gratefully and made his way over there.
As he hobbled closer he was able to see Jason there too. He looked downright pissed, his arms were crossed and his shoulders hunched, but that didn't compare to the furious shine his eyes held. Percy has never seen that look in his eyes before and he grimaced. However, after Percy came in to full sight, Jason's face morphed from anger to horror as his leg came to full view. Jason's eyes were about a milliliter away from popping out of their sockets.
Percy noticed there were students at the table other than his cousins. Besides Jason was this tanned beautiful girl whom he was unable to tell the color of her eyes because they kept changing in the light. She wore a simple t-shirt and jeans with her choppy uneven brown hair falling above her shoulders. She was also holding hands with Jason, so Percy assumed it was his girlfriend Jason told him about in May. On the other chair besides Jason's girlfriend was the older version of Annabeth. Her judgmental stormy eyes never changed from her former nine-year-old-self. Her curly blonde hair was tied up in a ponytail as she wore something similar to Jason's girlfriend. Thalia sat in the chair besides Annabeth, and the other chair besides Thalia sat that boy from the elevator; Grover. There was one unoccupied seat next to Grover and Jason so Percy awkwardly took that one. He cleared his throat not knowing how to start again.
Jason was still gaping at Percy obviously not expecting him to be in this condition. Jason's girlfriend looked at Percy with curiosity. Annabeth sneered and glared at him, remembering their last meet up. Thalia look at him with pity knowing the situation. Lastly Grover was ecstatic to see Percy again.
Percy awkwardly cleared his throat again and made eye contact with Jason, "I guess Zeus didn't tell you what happened either?" He asked.
Jason vehemently shook his head in response. Percy sighed and took a breath to explain, but Jason's girlfriend interrupted, " Wait is this the cousin who was supposed to visit this summer but didn't?"
Annabeth snorted, " Yes this is Percy. The rude one, not surprised though, his head is too filled up with seaweed to remember his commitments."
Percy ignored her, "I'm sorry, everything in May before the accident is a blur. I remember Jason mentioning a girlfriend but I don't remember your name."
"Oh I'm Piper." She said still tilting her head in curiosity.
"What accident?" Jason asked in a low voice.
"Well to keep it short, in May I got into a car accident putting my mom, stepfather, and half my leg into a grave." Everyone except Thalia had wide eyes. "Just got released from the hospital last week, and I'll be staying with my father until I'm old enough to live on my own."
Grover smile fell as he learned of the news. Annabeth's sneer fell into one of pity. Piper looked horrified, and Jason look like he was going to throw up. Thalia sat dwindling her fingers on the table looking anywhere but Percy's face.
"Alright I'm hungry I'm gonna get food. I'll grab yours Percy, Jason you grab Grover's as well." Thalia said as she scooted out of her chair and booked it towards the line of students waiting for their lunch. Jason, Piper, and Annabeth hurriedly trailed after her.
It was only Percy and Grover left at the table and Grover was fidgeting in his seat next to him, "Baah man you have some bad luck. Geez man, I'm sorry."
"It's good. I had three months to deal with it somewhat. I'm just trying to get familiar with things."
"Three months isn't enough to deal with that catastrophe. Are you gonna get a prosthetic in the future?"
"Yeah, I have to wait until late October to early November though. My leg isn't fully healed yet, so I'm on crutches until then."
"Ahhh. No matter how much time passes on crutches you will never be accustom to it. I've been on crutches for around eight years and it's still difficult for me to travel on them. It's easier of course, but it's never something you can master. I wish you luck though."
"Thanks." Both of them fell silent again. Soon enough the other four brought back the food.
Thalia handed Percy a tray of food. It was Nacho day with a side of Salt and Vinegar chips. He was happy that she remembered his favorite flavor of chips.
The table was silent until Grover decided to make small talk again, "What's your next period guys?"
"I think I have geometry next." Piper said frowning as she dug into her nachos.
"I have Criminal Justice next." Percy pipped in.
"Me too." Grover smiled at him again.
"Both Annabeth and I have study hall next. I can finally take my nap of the day." Thalia said wiping her fingers off on her napkin.
Annabeth snorted, "Don't you have that essay to write for English though? You're not going to wait and do it for homework aren't you?"
It was Thalia's turn to snort, "Annie you have way too much faith in me. I have a rule of not doing any work on the first day of school. Don't know why they ever assign it in the first place" Annabeth just sighed in response.
"I have English next if anyone was wondering." Jason said trying but failing to open his bag of Potato Chips. "Geez what are these bags made of in the first place? Steel?" He mumbled.
Piper giggled and snatched the bag from his hands and opened the bag in one try. Jason stared at her in awe.
"Percy what are you doing after school?" Thalia asked.
Percy scrunched his brows and groaned after forgetting about the plan. "I'm going with Triton to my father's aquarium. Don't know what I'm gonna do with crutches and all."
Thalia and Jason both winced at that.
It was now seventh period and Grover and Percy hobbled towards their class.
As soon as they entered the Stoll twins bombarded them.
"Hey it's that pirate kid again." Percy winced at that comment. "And Grover is in this class too. Oh you guys can be the crutches duo. Or maybe-"
"Thanks Travis but I'm good, me and Percy are just gonna take a seat." Grover nudged Percy towards two empty desks in the back.
He hurriedly followed Grover to avoid the twins. As soon as Percy took his seat he turned to Grover, "Are they always like that?"
Grover nodded in response, "Sadly. Just make up a random excuse every time you run into them. Don't ask questions either."
Before Percy could respond, the teacher walked in. He was young for a teacher and had a goofy grin on his face.
"Alright students you get the pleasure to have me as a teacher this year and I only have one rule. If you are late or absent you better come up with a far fetch excuse and convince the class that's the reason you're not here. It's the class job to either say that you're guilty or not guilty of being late or absent".
Grover and Percy exchange glances and shrugged.
"My name is Mr. Hermes. Would anyone like to answer this prompt; If the defendant admitted they're guilty what would you do as the defense lawyer?"
A boy in the front raised his hand.
"Yes the boy with the glasses, introduce yourself and explain what you will do."
"I'm Malcom." Everyone responded with a "Hi Malcom". "I would convince the defendant to plead guilty to take a lesser sentence than the sentence the judge would have given them if pleaded not guilty."
The teacher stared at Malcom with wide horrified eyes and ran a hand down his face. The twins then raised their hands.
"No that isn't the correct approach. Twins introduce yourselves and explain why Malcom is wrong."
"I'm Connor" "I'm Travis" the class responded with a hello. "Pleading guilty is not correct, because there's still a chance that you can convince the jury with a lie that they're not guilty."
"Correct! Bravo Travis and Connor. Now let me teach you all how to give a convincing lie."
Mr. Hermes held the class back for an extra minute to explain the significance of the brain and how easy it can be to manipulate it.
So now Percy is waiting for an elevator to reach his floor. Eighth period started a minute ago and Grover and him have been waiting for an elevator for over four minutes. Grover got off on the second floor and Percy is left waiting for the elevator to reach the third.
The elevator finally dinged and he made his way towards his algebra class. Percy braced himself as he entered the classroom.
"You're late" an older teacher rasped, she looked like she was in her upper fifties to lower sixties. What's bizarre is that she is wearing a leather biker's jacket and motor boots.
"Yeah sorry about that-"
"For being late and having no pass you will get twenty extra math problems for homework tonight." She said then started to write down something in her notebook.
"But I was late due to the traffic jam on the elevator-"
"Did I ask for an excuse honey?" For that you will get forty extra problems for homework. Besides you could've used the stairs, I've seen people with wheelchairs go up and down the stairs before. Now take a seat."
Percy glared at her before finding the only empty desk. Unfortunately, it was next to Annabeth. He rolled his eyes at his luck, but complied and sat down. He ignored Annabeth's smirk at his inconvenience.
"Now let's get on with the rules. I don't tolerate anyone being late without a pass no matter the excuse. If it's a repeat occurrence then I would have a referral written up. Now let's get on to homework..."
Percy droned the rest of her rules out.
It was finally the last period of the day. Percy had already met Mr. Brunner this morning so he's hoping this period will go by smoothly.
Percy met Grover in the elevator again and it turns out they have the same class again. So he walked with him to Greek Mythology. Percy saw a lot of familiar faces in there. Thalia, Jason, Piper, and sadly Annabeth were in there as well. Grover and Percy sat by them.
Thalia looked at Percy, "Annabeth just told me Miss Dodd's rammed you with extra homework."
Percy huffed, "Thanks for the reminder but I'm not gonna do the homework anyways."
Annabeth rolled her eyes but didn't choose to comment. Mr. Brunner rolled into the classroom.
"Good Afternoon class, I hope you day has been going well."
There was a lot of Good Afternoon's followed by groans in response. Mr. Brunner just chuckled in response.
"Alright I'm gonna take attendance, and since I see a lot of familiar faces it shouldn't take too long."
He quickly took attendance, "For those you are new here I don't have many rules except for being respectful, which I know you all shouldn't have a hard time following that. Well since it is the first day, I'll let you guys use this period as a study hall and we can start lessons tomorrow."
There was a collected cheer around the classroom. The students started to quietly chat amongst themselves, Percy ignored Jason's attempt to engage with a conversation him.
He was exhausted. This was Percy's first "real" day without a nap since the accident, and the day was weighing down on him hard, especially since he was up before dawn. Percy decided it was best for him to lay his head down for a bit.
It seemed like no time later someone started to shake Percy's shoulder. He groggily lifted his head to see Grover frowning at him, "Mr. Brunner gave us permission to leave five minutes earlier than the bell. You okay man?"
"Yeah I'm good. I'm just tired, and I'm still not used to the time differences from California." Percy said not giving any further details.
Grover still wore a frown, but he nodded accepting that answer. Both of them were excused to leave before the crowd of students rush out of school. He and Grover separated as Grover needed to go to his locker while Percy just needed to wait by Triton's car.
Before Percy could reach the elevator to go on the first floor, two hands pushed Percy down the stairwell as he hobbled past them. Percy flew down around fifteen stairs and hit his chin rather hard on the cement landing and his head kinda bounced off the wall. Percy blacked out for a second and tasted his lunch in his mouth before the sound of laughter filled his ears.
Once Percy became aware of his surroundings, He slowly sat up and lifted his hand towards his chin. He pulled his hand back to find it covered in blood. Percy winced at the sight, he also found a rather large goose egg on his head where he hit it.
The laughter continued and he looked up to see the perpetrator. It was the kid in Percy's Computer Strategy class Lucas or Luke. He had a strange scar on one of his eyes. He stood at the top of the stare well smiling with another person beside him, he had an eye patch but Percy never saw him before.
The bell rang interrupting Percy's courage to fight back. Knowing there'll be a crowd of students mass exiting the building, he knew he had to get out of there before he got entangled within the crowd. He looked back up to the top of the stairwell, but the two people who pushed him already fled.
Percy cursed himself and got to his feet. He carefully went down the rest of the stairs and out the front entrance not caring for the trail of blood he was leaving. Percy quenched the urge to vomit as he made his way towards Triton's car.
He beat Triton there but he got a quick look at his reflection through the car window. Percy grimaced at the large cut he had on his chin. He tried to stop the bleeding with his sleeve.
It wasn't long before Triton showed up. He took one glance at Percy before saying, "You better not get any blood in my car." Triton tossed Percy a towel to insure he wouldn't get any blood in his car.
Triton started the car and took off towards their father's aquarium. It was getting harder and harder for Percy to stay awake so he decided to slip into the oblivion.
Seniors: Triton, Luke, and Ethan.
Juniors: Thalia, Malcom, Drew, and Clarisse.
Sophomores: Percy, Grover, Annabeth, The Stoll brothers, and Katie.
Freshmen: Jason, Piper, and Will.
Mr. Morpheus - the god of sleep and dreams. What better place to put him as a teacher than economics.
Mr. Charon - Taken from Rick O'Riordan's works, he is dramatic, and English can be a very dramatic subject. The pomegranate reference is from a viral clip of a professor being dramatic over pomegranates. Also in mythology pomegranates are used to stay in the Underground forever, which can symbolize a student failing and having to retake the class. From The Lightning Thief and The Last Olympian Charon is complaining for not being paid enough.
Mrs. Nereid - I made the last name to represent a sea nereid. I also used the name Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
Coach Hedge - I didn't go into much detail since he's the supervisor of study hall. He's one of Goode's Physical Education teachers as well as a coach of baseball -Taken from Heroes of Olympus
Ms. Hecate - There will be more about this teacher in later chapters. Why I chose her for Computer Strategies as I kinda of compare it to potions, and how you can manipulate it and also create a virus . It's a stretch, I know.
Mr. Hermes - More information about him in later chapters. Hermes is a god of protectors of thieves. Hence why I put him in criminal justice and he may pickpocket his students.
Miss Dodds. - taken straight from The Lightning Thief the monster math teacher who likes to use the term "honey"
Mr. Brunner - taken straight from The Lightning Thief and the other books. More interactions with him in future chapters.
Annabeth's and Percy's Relationship - The dynamic will reflect the feud between Athena and Poseidon.
