Chapter Six

Despite him wanting to head back to the shrine with her, Shippo had to part ways with her halfway through the trek back. His pout was obvious as she waved him off with a smile, assuring him happily that they'd see each other again soon. He relented when she reminded him of that, and he swooped down to give her a tight hug before bounding off again. Kagome remained where she was for a moment before rolling her eyes and, with a faint giggle coming from her, she turned and resumed her walk back to the shrine.

She came to a halt at a crosswalk, waiting for the light to change so she could go through. Without Shippo around, happily chatting her ears off, for the first time in the entire day, she was finally left alone with her own thoughts. Her hand tightened its grip on her bag, and she let out a muted sigh. The day had been exhausting, and right now she wanted nothing more than to lay down in bed and take a nice, long nap. Well, after a relaxing bath, that was, but she couldn't do any of that. Not yet.

The light she was waiting for changed, and she hurried across the crosswalk, alongside the few other people waiting to go.

As she walked, she realized very quickly that she missed Shippo's lively attitude and insistence of chattering away to her. Without him there, things definitely felt far too boring for her own tastes…

She went home directly to the shrine, hopeful to have a little bit of time to relax before she had to change focus. She trekked up the many, many stairs on autopilot, lost in thought. She wasn't aware of the unfamiliar aura lurking on the shrine grounds. At least, not until she was directly in front of it.

Absorbed in her own thoughts, she wasn't aware of the person right in front of her until it was too late. She ended up running directly into their chest, nearly stumbling back when she was jolted out of her own head. Before she could fall flat on her behind, a hand curling gently around her wrist prevented it. Kagome blinked owlishly, staring at the hand curled around her wrist for a couple of seconds before she let her gaze travel up to the face of the owner of that hand. Blue eyes clashed against deep umber, and she craned her head to the side a little bit, confusion forming in her gaze. Stark-white hair pulled back in a long braid that was tucked over his shoulder caught her attention next, the snowy color resting nicely against his bronzed skin. Black claws and slit-pupils caught her attention at last, and it acted like a signal she initially hadn't picked up on in the first few seconds. The cats on her shoulders sat up from their naps, tails bristling some as pair of low hisses came from them, their actions only solidifying her realization.

He was a demon. He didn't feel threatening, but he was a demon nonetheless.

"Oh, wow, you're as clumsy as people say, aren't you?" he commented, baring fangs in a bright, friendly grin. As he did, his umber eyes glistened brilliantly. "Hmm… but you're as cute as they say, too." He paused for a moment, seeming to think to himself before he tilted his head playfully to the side with his grin still plastered on his face. "Well… I suppose being clumsy is cute in its own right, wouldn't you say?"

Kagome felt her face heat up a bit and she pursed her lips in a pout, deliberately tugging her wrist out of his grip. He smiled wider and let go the moment she gave her first tug, lifting that same hand as he waved at her.

"Aww, look at you!" he continued, deep umber eyes lighting up in joy. "It's just so unfair for a human to be so cute!" He laughed, stooping forward so his face was directly in front of her own, his smile widening when she reeled back some out of surprise. "Oh, who am I kidding? I like that you're so cute! Cute and strong… Man! What's not to like about you?"

"Enough with calling me cute already," she huffed in response. She folded her arms over her chest, shifting her weight on her feet as she eyed the unfamiliar demon that seemed to be intent on getting way too friendly with her far too quickly. "I don't think we've ever met, have we?" she asked the following second. Her suspicious were confirmed when he shook his head.

"No, we haven't met before, but I've heard so much about you!"

Kagome was taken aback by his claim, and she nodded slowly. "I-I… okay," she said. "How do you know about me?"

"Hm?" he tilted his head to the side, his smile widening. "You're a celebrity in demon culture, you know," he stated. Her eyes widened, an incredulous look appearing on her face.

"I'm a what?!"

He nodded cheerfully. "Yup! Your presence in the past changed a lot!. Because of you, several demons changed what they were and how they perceived humans," he stated. Kagome was wide-eyed as he continued. "Because of you, an era of peace followed the end of Naraku. Demons were able to come to see humans as allies and vice-versa. A miko who defied her predecessors and doted on demons left a powerful message as her legacy for the centuries to come."

She wasn't able to suppress the smile she felt peppering her face. "I had no idea I impacted things that much," she stated. Her words were true. While she knew she'd had a little impact on the past, she never imagined the full gravity her presence might've had. Her demon companions never made a comment on it, most likely seeing it as the peaceful aftermath. They endured it, and it'd seemed to have become their norm. They didn't even seem to think twice about how things were now.

He smiled wider. "Yeah. Of course, not everyone changed and adapted but enough did that it changed what was considered normal. Demons and humans were able to coexist peacefully side-by-side. Just like they can now." He paused and sighed. "Well, for the most part. Some demons still cause trouble, but same old, same old."

She felt her smile widen. "I… well… I'm glad to hear that," she said. She wasn't mentioned by name in any sort of history book, so she had expected to fall between the cracks as the years went on, but apparently not. Humans might not be aware of her feats, but her name sure seemed alive in the demon society and their history. She met his gaze again, a calmer smile in place now. She could tell by his aura that he meant her no harm. Eira and Enya had settled down, as well, furthering her calm disposition. "Well, you know my name, but I don't know yours," she commented. "So? What can I call you?"

He let his grin grow even wider at her question, happy to respond. "Yoichi," he said. Kagome smiled and nodded as she imprinted that name to memory. "Sorry for the sudden visit. I heard that this shrine was your home and I wanted a chance to see you in person for myself…" he trailed off with a laugh. "This place... It's peaceful and very nice," he added. Kagome smiled and nodded. "Now that I've done what I wanted, I should be on my way."

"It's okay," she responded. "The shrine is open to all types of visitors, so you should come by more often if you ever want to stop by for a visit," she said. "Maybe next time we can talk a bit more."

His eyes lit up at her suggestion, and he was quick to nod, stepping around her on light steps. His pointed ears peeked out from beneath his snowy-white hair as he turned to glance over his shoulder. "If I have your approval, then I'd be happy to come around as often as you want!" he exclaimed cheerfully. Kagome smiled and nodded, lifting a hand to wave him off. "I'll be seeing you!"

"See you later, Yoichi!" she called out as he disappeared from her line of sight. With him gone, she let her hand fall back to her side and she turned on her heel to head into the shrine.

When she went inside, she realized that no one was home yet. She found a note hung up on the fridge, explaining that her mother had gone shopping and her grandfather was having tea with some friends. Kagome set the note on the kitchen counter and went up to her room. She yawned as she ascended the stairs, stretching with a mild sigh.

As soon as she opened her door, Eira and Enya leaped from her shoulders and onto her bed, taking over her pillows as they promptly curled up and made themselves comfortable. She smiled faintly and went to her desk, sinking down in her chair. She sat there in silence for a moment.

It was nice to have a bit of a breather, but she knew it wouldn't last long. After taking a few minutes to relax, she pushed herself up and moved so she was seated on her bedroom floor. She exhaled, letting out a slow sigh as she fell into a familiar state- meditation.

Her day was far from over, she knew.

She wasn't sure how long she sat there like that, but she was eventually pulled out of her concentration by a quick knock on her door before it creaked open.

"Hey, Nee-chan," Souta poked his head into her room, and she glanced up at him with a curious hum. "Sesshoumaru's here to see you."

Kagome nodded in response and pushed herself up onto her feet with a faint sigh falling from her lips. She could feel his aura coming from outside, where he was most likely waiting for her to show. She made her way over to her dresser and quickly pulled out a change of clothes. "Thanks for coming to get me," she said as she rummaged around in the drawer. "Let him know I'll be down in a few minutes."

"Okay!" Souta responded and shut the door behind him as he left. Once she'd finally found what she'd been looking for, Kagome pushed the drawer closed again and hurried to change into the set of clothes. It wasn't anything elaborate- just a pair of black shorts and a matching black sports bra. It was something she'd normally wear for her sparring sessions against him. Deciding to forgo shoes like usual, she pulled her hair up into a high ponytail before departing from her room.

She felt her steps slow when she made it outside and into the courtyard, her brow arching when she saw Sesshoumaru being held up in conversation by the younger boy. Unsure of what they were talking about, Kagome wasn't sure if she should just interrupt. Before she could say or do anything, molten gold darted over to her gaze, and a moment later, Souta turned to face her. She offered him a smile and finally closed the distance.

"What's up?" she asked. "What were you guys talking about?"

"Nothing!" Souta fired back quickly. Too quickly. Kagome arched a brow once again, suspicions rising.

"You answered that way too quickly…" she trailed off, leveling an icy stare on his face. She folded her arms over her chest and bent forward to be on eye-level with the boy, and Souta backtracked a step or two under the pressure of her glare. "Why, if I didn't know any better, I'd start to suspect that you're hiding something from your big sister." Well, that, and she could also feel it in his aura, but she wouldn't be the one to alert him to that.

Souta laughed and rubbed the back of his head before responding. "Well, good thing you do," he commented, only to be answered by her silence. He backed up another space or two before turning on his heel and beelining for their home. "Well, I should go. Don't wanna get in the way of all your training."

She didn't make a move to stop him. Instead, she turned to face Sesshoumaru in the hope he might give her an answer. To her disbelief, and slight irritation, he merely hummed.

"Really?" she dryly asked. "You're really not going to tell me what you were talking to Souta about?"

"You heard him," came his response, and her eyes widened as her disbelief continued to mount. "It was nothing."

Kagome took a step up to him, tilting her head at an angle to meet his gaze with her arms still folded over her chest. Eyes narrowed, blue met gold in a stalemate. A few seconds ticked by, and she huffed. "... geez, sometimes you're such a pain."

"You hardly have room to talk," he responded, leaning down close enough so their noses touched. "Or need I remind you?"

Kagome rolled her eyes and turned on her heel. She flicked her ponytail over her shoulder, and it smacked him directly in the face. She felt the irritation seep into his aura, and she smirked. "Yeah, yeah, you made your point. Let's get to sparing already."

"Very well, if you insist."

A long sparring session later found Kagome sprawled out on her back, fast asleep. Instead of waking her, Sesshoumaru merely gathered her up in his arms and toted her back inside the shrine. He didn't want to continue to push her when she'd already exhausted herself to the point of needing rest in order to recuperate.

"I take it you two are done for now?"

The gentle voice caused him to turn, and his eyes landed on the woman sitting at the table. When he nodded, she tilted her head to the staircase.

"Go ahead and put her in bed," she said. "I'll wake her up in a little while after she's had a quick nap," she added. She didn't need to say another word before he'd already started on his way up- familiar with which room was her own.

When he came down the stairs again, Kun-Loon had gotten up already, and he located her in the kitchen preparing a fragrant tea. A smile was on her face, and she glanced over her shoulder to look at him. "Would you like to stay for a cup?" she asked, "or do you need to be on your way?"

"I won't stay long," he stated, and she nodded. She seemed to have been expecting that response out of him.

"Still… you're still here, so you must have something you wish to talk about," she stated in a knowing tone. There was a bit of tension in her voice at the same time.

"The man that sired her."

Kun-Loon nodded at the statement. She didn't stop her motions in fixing her tea, but she didn't shut the conversation down. "Oh? What about him?"

"Do you still have contact with him?"

She shook her head the moment he posed that question. "Of course not," she responded automatically. "For the most part, he's never acknowledged here." She paused for a moment and glanced at him. "Why do you ask?"

She was answered with silence, and curiosity got the better of her. She turned completely to face him, her confusion on her face.

"No reason," he eventually responded. "Just mild curiosity." The next second, he'd turned and departed from the shrine entirely.

Kun-Loon was left alone in the silence. After a few seconds, a small smile reappeared on her face. It was a knowing smile.

"Oh, Sesshoumaru-sama," she hummed softly. "I won't say a word, but I know Kagome would be flattered to know you want to protect her so much. Flattered, and a little bit annoyed, knowing my daughter."

She could tell his reason behind asking. After all, she could remember the time Inuyasha asked her the same thing, just with less tact. The half-brothers were so different, yet even they had their moments where their very few similarities showed through.

Even if she didn't need it, Kun-Loon was glad to know that she had them looking out for Kagome. She was glad that, no matter what, she had them there to protect her.

Auroua-chan: Finally finished this update. The new demon introduced in this chapter will reappear soon.

What was Souta talking to Sesshoumaru about? Only time will tell, and that's if she can pry it out of either of them.

On top of the class she'll be taking at school under him, they'll still have these training sessions at the shrine. Sesshoumaru has a bit of favoritism when it comes to her, after all.

Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting but if not sorry.

Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
