Chapter Twelve
True to his word, Aizawa didn't care at all about the process that had been decided on. He stayed asleep through it all. The blackboard was taken over while people voted, and, once the votes had been tallied, the names of the victors were written down. However, as expected, most people ended up voting for themselves. Only the victors tally count was shown, most likely as a way to prevent undesired drama or worse.
Admittedly, she was surprised to see that she'd up with two separate votes- especially when she didn't even vote for herself in the first place. She had a decent enough guess as to who one of the votes came from, but the second one…- she was at an utter loss.
She'd opted to put her vote in Iida. To her, he seemed to be the best candidate. She had gauged his aura. She had a good enough feel for it, enough to put her vote towards him above anyone else in the class. However, it seemed that no one else felt the same as she had- not even Iida himself as he had only one vote. One person had three votes, and therefore the majority, and that person was Midoriya. Although she was a bit surprised, she didn't let it show on her face. He seemed more than enough surprised in her stead, as it was. Soon enough, they were standing beside one another in front of the room.
"Fine, it's decided." Though he was sitting up at least, Aizawa hadn't done much other than unzipping his sleeping bag enough for the cats to come out. They had migrated to his desk, surveying the class' proceedings with observant eyes. "The class rep will be Midoriya and the deputy rep will be Higurashi."
Beside her, Midoriya was a bundle of nerves. She could feel the stress and tension rolling off him in waves. It was getting to be too much, and she took a step to the side- not that it did anything. Her senses were overwhelmed in a matter of seconds. She sighed as he stumbled on something to say.
"S-Seriously?" Midoriya was at a clear lack of words. She offered him a smile that did a little to calm him some, much to her relief.
"I think it'll be fun," she chirped cheerfully. "Naturally, we make for a good team, don't you think?" she asked, calling back to the training drill they had for All Might's class.
He wasn't a bad fit for it, sure, but he was definitely nervous. Anyone could pick up on that from his trembling limbs and anxious expression.
"This might not be so bad," Asui said, setting a finger to her chin. Kirishima nodded in agreement, glancing at the green-haired girl.
"Yeah, after all's said and done, Midoriya can get pretty fired up," he said, "and Kagome's been so cool in all our training so far. She totally whooped Bakugo yesterday!"
"As if, bastard!" Bakugo snapped in response. Kagome swapped her focus to the explosively-tempered boy, offering him a slight smile.
"Oh yeah, what would you call it?" Sero chimed in with a laugh.
She paid no mind to the bickering going on in the room between them, instead choosing to pick up Eira and Enya. They hopped onto her shoulders and nudged against her cheeks.
Her heart fluttered slightly with the praise and compliments. She felt good to hear their words. She'd been feeling so nervous lately about the unavoidable situation of running into her father. She didn't know when, but she knew it was something that would most certainly happen. It was impossible to avoid if she were to keep on this path. To know that her classmates thought of her in such ways made her feel more at ease, more comfortable…- happier. Her vision blurred a bit as she wallowed in the thoughts a bit longer.
Enya bumped her nose against her own, and Kagome smiled. She turned so her back faced the class- not wanting anyone to notice the way water had built up in her eyes, nor how a clear trail had rained down the plump of her cheek to drop from her chin.
It was nice.
Standing away from the gate, watching the idiot media clamber about was irritating. Still, they just kept at it and kept at it, and all for what? A pathetic comment from All Might. Crimson eyes narrowed in ire as they kept blocking the way- not that they'd find a way in. It was pathetic.
By chance- by sheer chance, he'd caught sight of that girl from before. It was hard to miss her, especially when he was always looking for her whenever he was out. Always keeping an eye open for her or those cats of hers. They were a dead giveaway to her.
From a distance, he'd followed her. What were the odds that she just happened to be a student here? It almost seemed like a sign.
He merged into the crowd, managing to be ignored as he got close enough to the gate. Once he was, he reached a hand out. The moment he touched it, the barrier began to crumble until it'd fallen into a pile of rubble. The entryway was open, and the crowd reacted instantly.
Instantly, they all clamored inside, not bothering to stop and question how the gate had even been destroyed. As they did, alarms were set off. Eventually, he was the only one remaining outside the ruined gate. A grin broke out across his face as he turned and walked off. Before he got more than five steps, a vortex of shadows opened and he walked freely inside.
Higurashi Kagome of class 1-A.
How perfect it was.
Despite the food being amazing in the cafeteria, Kagome still resorted to packing her own lunch. She made her way to a table with a few empty seats and sat down. Once more, both Enya and Eira had decided to stay with Aizawa for the duration of lunch. She wasn't sitting for long before she was joined. She looked up and smiled when her eyes met a pair of duo-colored ones.
"Usually he's sitting beside you," Shoto commented as he observed the vacant seat at her side. Kagome blinked owlishly before realizing who he was talking about, and she nodded.
"Yeah," she said, glancing at the empty seat for a split second before she darted her attention back up to Shoto. "Sesshoumaru needed his help with something, so he can't join us today." She paused and looked down, a small smile appearing on her face. "Hopefully you don't mind it just being us," she added with a laugh. It was faint and felt forced.
"I don't mind," he responded right away. Why would he? The lacking presence of the overbearing demon was a little of a relief, anyway. He proudly showed off his possessiveness over her at every chance he got- boasting to the point it was aggravating. She liked him, so he put up with it, but…
"She's mine."
That comment loitered in his brain an uncomfortable amount.
"Hm?" Kagome tilted her head to the side when she picked up on his troubled aura. "Shoto? What's wrong?" she asked. Her voice called his attention, and he met her gaze again.
"What's your relationship to him, anyway?" he asked. Confusion seeped into her eyes. Though they were their fathers, they were so different.
"Shippo?" she asked, and he nodded. "Ah…" she trailed off, taking her time to carefully think of an answer. "He's… um, we're kinda like family" she finally said. "He's really protective, but he's far from the only one," she said then, a soft smile lifting her lips. "I know he can be a lot sometimes, but it's all in good nature."
"Wait," his face was blank as he cut her off. She answered with a small noise, and he continued, "so you're not dating him?"
Kagome promptly choked on her food at his question. After a few seconds of sputtering, and a long drink from her glass, she gave him an incredulous look. "What in the hell gave you that impression?"
Her response made him feel relieved, but he felt ridiculous for being impacted that way by it. "He did," he responded flatly. "He's overtly fond of you. Are you sure?"
Kagome nodded. "Yes, I'm sure," she responded in that same flat tone he had just used. She shook her head, and to change the subject, she pushed her lunch his way and motioned to it. "I actually made you something," she said, smiling. He looked surprised upon hearing that. She could feel the surprise lurking in his aura, but just below that was a pulse of happiness, and her smile widened.
He took what she'd offered and ate it. It was unfamiliar but nice. It was the first time he'd ever tried her cooking, but it was easily one of the best things he'd tried. She was quiet as she awaited his response. "It's good." He smiled and took another bite from her food. She smiled brighter when he did.
She opened her mouth to say something, but the blaring sound of alarms cut her off.
"There has been a Level 3 security breach. All students promptly evacuate to the outdoors."
The announcement over the intercom set off a catalyst of motion. Students bolted up from their tables and fled, meanwhile Kagome stood up slowly with a frown peppering her face.
If it was as big of an emergency, then how come she didn't feel any sort of rise from the staff? Among the panic from the students, they were as calm as ever. She proceeded in caution, not wanting to get swept up in the sea of hustling bodies and be at risk of getting knocked over. After a bit more she could confirm that the students were the only ones in a panic when she peered out the window closest to her. In the distance, she could see Aizawa and Present Mic standing in front of the media- who'd someone found their collective way inside the gate. Alongside the teachers were both Eira and Enya in their larger forms.
"Everyone, stay calm!" A familiar voice echoing over the combined voices from the large mass of students rang through the air, and she looked up. When she did, the first thing she was was Iida standing haphazardly on top of the exit sign over the doorway dozens and dozens of people were trying to push their way through.
"Everything's fine!" Iida continued, "it's just the press! There's nothing to cause a panic over! This is U.A! Let us behave in a way that is befitting the best of the best."
As his words reached the crowd, the air around them all settled. They calmed, relieved by the reassurance that things were fine. At the same time, more turned to the windows and surveyed things as well.
"Alright, class rep. Get started."
After the commotion had settled, class returned to normal. Aizawa had once more huddled into his yellow sleeping bag as he lay on the floor. It was the norm for class with him, at least.
"N-Now let us decide on the other class officers," Midoriya seemed more nervous than ever as he spoke in front of the room. Kagome glanced at him, brow arched at his poor posture and tense form. "But before we do that, can I say something?"
Kagome shrugged. "I don't see why not," she said.
"Well, I think Iida should be the class rep after all," Midoriya said. "He was able to get everyone's attention in a cool way. I think he'd be the best fit for it."
Kagome nodded in agreement. "You certainly have a point," she said, offering Iida a smile. She'd voted for him in the first place, but no one had to know.
"Agreed," Kirishima spoke up. "Midoriya's saying it, and it's true. Iida was a big help at the cafeteria with the huge crowd.
Sero nodded. "Yeah! Didn't he kinda look like the person on the emergency exit signs while he was at it?"
"You're wasting time," Aizawa said, sitting up enough to glare in their direction. "I don't care what you do, just hurry up and do it," he said as he laid back down.
Iida stood up. "If the class rep has nominated me, then it cannot be helped," he said. "From this day forth, I, Iida Tenya, promise to do my best to carry out the responsibilities of the class representative."
"Yeah!" Kirishima grinned. "We're counting on you Emergency Exit Iida!"
"Emergency Exit Iida, do your best!" Sero chimed.
"For today's hero basic training, it's turned into a class with three instructors. All Might and me, and someone else," Aizawa said.
"Turned into?"
"Excuse me!" Sero raised his hand. "What are we going to be doing?"
Aizawa held up a card with the word recuse written on it. "Rescue training. Disasters, shipwrecks, and everything in between."
"Rescue…?" Kaminiari repeated the word. "Looks like it'll be a lot of work this time, too."
"Idiot," Kirishima leaned towards him. "This is hero work. My arms are ready to rumble!"
"No one can beat me in the water," Asui said.
"Oi, I'm not done," Aizawa said. His voice quieted the chatter easily. "You can decide whether you want to wear your costume this time or not," he said. "Because there are probably costumes that limit your abilities, too. The training is going to take place off campus, so we're taking a bus to the location. That's it," he said as he turned to walk away. "Hurry and get ready. Head outside once you are."

Once on the bus, her lap was occupied by the two kittens. The ride didn't last too long, and she absentmindedly listened to the conversation going on around her.
"Your Quirk is a lot like All Might's."
Asui's comment made her open one eye- more so Midoriya's reaction to the comment. She had a similar assumption- it certainly felt akin to the number one hero's own Quick, but…
"Not really, Tsu," Kirishima said. "All Might doesn't get hurt when he uses his Quirk. They just look the same, but it's nice to have a simple augmenting type Quirk. You can do a lot of flashy stuff," he said, and, as he did, he let the flesh on his arm harden. "My hardening Quirk is strong against others, but it doesn't look like much."
Midoriya shook his head. "I think your Quirk is really cool!" he said. "It's a Quirk that can definitely pass as a pro's!"
"A pro's, huh?" Kirishima looked happy to have the compliment, a genuine smile flashing onto his face. "You have to think of popularity as a hero, too."
"My Naval Laser is pro level in both flashiness and strength," Aoyama stated.
Mina set a hand on his shoulder. "But it's not great if t it gives you a stomachache."
"Well," Kirishima began, "if you're taking strong and flashy, then it's gotta be Todoroki and Bakugo, huh?"
At the mention of his name, Bakugo scoffed.
"Bakugo's always mad, so he doesn't seem like he'll be popular," Asui commented flatly. At once, her words sparked a reaction as the blonde stood up and leaned over the seat in front of him.
"Oi! What the hell!" Bakugo snapped, "you wanna fight?!"
"See," Tsu stated when he proved her right.
"We haven't known each other that long, so it's amazing that everyone knows his personality is bad," Kaminari said, poking fun.
"Tch," Bakugo shifted to glare at him. "What was that, bastard? I'll kill you!"
"Oi, we're here," Aizawa said, cutting into the conversation at hand. "Quit messing around."
As they got off the bus, they were greeted by the third person who'd be overseeing their training that day. A low rumble came from a few when it was revealed to be Thirteen.
"Everyone, I've been waiting for you," Thirteen said, and then motioned to the entrance of the dome-shaped building. "Let's head inside without delay so we can get started today."
Once inside, they were able to see a massive layout of multiple different rescue areas. From city terrain to water, and everything in between in the spacious area.
"A shipwreck, a landslide, a fire, a windstorm, et cetera-" Thirteen trailed off, motioning at each location. "This is a training ground I made with several different types of disasters and accidents. It's called the Unforeseen Simulation Joint," they said. "Or, USJ for short!"
"Thirteen, where is All Might?" Aizawa asked, walking over to them.
"He's resting in the lounge," Thirteen said. "It looks like he did a bit too much hero work on his way to work and ran out of time."
"That's the height of irrationality," Aizawa stated. He shook his head and turned back to the group behind him. They had taken precautions, at least, just in case… "It can't be helped," he said. "Shall we begin?"
"Before that, let me say one thing," Thirteen said. "Err… or two, or three, or four… five… six… seven…-" Thirteen held up their hand. "Everyone, I'm sure you're aware of my Quirk, Black Hole. I can suck up anything and turn it into dust."
"You've been able to use that Quirk to save people from all kinds of disasters, right?" Midoriya asked.
"Yes," Thirteen responded, "but it's also a power that can easily kill." While the comment stunned a few, Thirteen continued. "Some of you also have Quirks like that, right? In a superhuman society, personal Quirks have been certified and stringently regulated so that doesn't seem to be a problem at first glance," they said. "However, please don't forget that there are many Quirks that can easily kill with one wrong step. With Aizawa's physical fitness test you found out the possibility of your hidden powers, and with All Might's person-to-person combat training, I think you experienced the danger of those powers against others. This class is a fresh start," they stated. "You shall learn how to use your Quirks to save people's lives. You do not have powers so you can harm others. I hope you leave here with the understanding that you have powers in order to help others." Thirteen paused and bowed a bit. "That's it, thank you all for listening."
"Alright then, first-" Aizawa started to speak, but an electric current ran across the lights on the ceiling, silencing him as the area darkened. The water fountain in the middle of the dome started to run weirdly, the flow of the water being interrupted. Not long after, a swirl of shadows began to distort the area, and Aizawa turned towards it automatically, alarm surging through his aura. He turned back to the rest in a hurry. "Gather together and don't move!" he commanded. "Thirteen, protect the students."
"What's that?" Through the confusion spreading among them, Kirishima called attention to the shadows in the middle- to the person that had stepped out, and to the many more coming out still. "Is this like the entrance exam where the lesson's already started?" Kirishima asked.
"Don't move!" Aizawa's tense voice kept them glued to where they stood. He put his goggles on over his eyes as he observed the growing crowd forming. "Those are villains."
