A/N: Trigger Warning: This chapter addresses abortion. You have been warned!
When Ginny's period was one day late, it did not alarm her in the slightest. She dismissed the notification of the app that her period was starting today without a second thought. On day four she was getting slightly annoyed that her period hadn't come yet, but it wasn't too worrying.
When May came around, however, she decided to get a pregnancy test. She was on birth control, so she wasn't really expecting anything out of it, but she'd rather be sure. She walked to the nearest grocery store and picked up a few tests, it was good to have on hand anyway. She picked up some snacks too, it was almost lunchtime, and she hadn't eaten yet.
She waited for Felicia to leave and then went to pee. She put the test beside her and turned her focus on her laptop again so she could continue studying for her exams. She would glance at it every few minutes as she studied. When her eyes flitted to the test for a fifth time, her eyes remained focused on the test and she froze. Two lines. Fuck. Her heart pounded as she processed the result. Refusing to believe the test, Ginny jumped up and grabbed one of the fancier tests from her room and went back to the restroom, trying not to panic. Her syllabus stood open, long forgotten, on her laptop. She sat back at the table, placing the test in front of her. She stared at it, waiting for letters to pop up. It seemed to take an eternity and yet the letters appeared too soon.
Pregnant. Then a few seconds later, 5 - 6 weeks.
Ginny felt like the floor beneath her had disappeared and she was falling. Yet she remained firmly seated on her chair, staring at words that had caused the feeling. She sucked in air but still felt like she lacked oxygen.
Ginny didn't know what to do. Before she would have gone to Harry first, ask him. He was her best friend after all, and he'd hug her and tell her things would be alright. Now everything was far more complicated and she had nowhere to go. Her parents didn't need to know she had no clue who the father was. Hermione could tell her brother, Neville was Harry's roommate and Seamus was Dean's. Cho and Luna didn't feel like a good option either.
She had to admit Harry was still her best option. And perhaps he deserved to know first. With shaking hands, she typed the message.
When you get back, can you come cover?
I need to tell you something.
Love you
x Gin
She clicked 'Send'. There was no turning back now. When her phone buzzed, she glanced to read his message.
Are you okay? Will come over as soon as I arrive.
x Harry
As she sat there thinking of nothing and everything at the same time and the hours crept by, she made up a few things in her mind.
She had two options. Have a baby or not have a baby. Not having a baby would be easy, no one would have to know and it could be over quickly. No major life changes, no need to figure who the father was or prepare to have a child of her own.
Things had been good with Harry, and she wondered what having a baby would jeopardise. She had no doubt he loved her and wanted to support her but this was not nothing. It was a baby, and it may not even be his. She'd be lying if she hadn't thought about having kids with Harry, eventually, several years into the future, she knew he'd be a good dad. They had never talked about it, not yet because it had barely been a month and she had no clue what he wanted. Not to mention if it was Dean's, it would impact him too and it would hurt Harry. Dean, who had grown up with a single mum, may not take well to the news either.
Then she had to consider herself, she still had a year of studying to go and combining that with pregnancy and a baby would not be easy. Depending on Harry's reaction, and Dean's she may have to do it by herself. She really wanted to give Harry more credit because he was a great guy and if it had been someone else that was pregnant, the thought of Harry not stepping up would have been laughable, but this was her life and she had to consider the worst-case scenario.
The whole situation was complicated but even as the worst possible outcomes thundered through her head, she could hardly ignore the new feeling that had settled in her stomach. She wanted to keep the baby, she could not deny it.
When she took up her phone again, she began looking up things. She knew the basics, don't drink alcohol, don't eat raw meat, but she knew there was more she was supposed to be doing and that had to start now. She looked up paternity tests too, relieved to find out they could do those in a few weeks' time because the sooner they found out the better.
She was scared, scared to tell Harry most of all, scared to tell Dean, scared of what was to come. She was glad she had chosen to tell Harry first because one way or another that conversation would already give her much clarity.
Harry walked into the dorm, looking rather worried. Ginny closed her laptop and dragged him to her bedroom.
She closed the door in case Felicia showed up. Harry walked further into the room but she kept standing there by the door, unable to move closer to him. He turned around and looked at her, waiting to speak. She prepared to start talking but she had not said those words out loud yet.
"Are you breaking up with me?" he asked genuinely. His brow was furrowed.
"No, of course not," Ginny replied in earnest.
"Then what?" he tried. She bit her lip. "Ginny, you're scaring me."
She was hyper-aware of the fact that she had chosen to stay so far away from him and she knew that was slightly worrying considering how close they usually stood or sat or laid. She just knew she couldn't say it if she had to look him in the eyes. She had been stalling, the words simply didn't want to escape her mouth. She looked down at the floor in front of her feet so she did not have to see his reaction, good or bad, and opened her mouth.
"I'm pregnant."
An ear-deafening silence followed but she did not dare to look up to see his reaction.
"How long?" Harry eventually said, his voice sounded emotional but that was to be expected. She also knew why he had asked the question, why it was significant how far along she was.
"Five weeks," she said now.
"But—" Harry started objecting.
"It counts from your last period, which puts conception around four weeks ago." She walked over to him and took the pregnancy tests out of her pocket. She held them out for him without looking him in the eye and he took them from her without a word. She sat down on the bed and finally looked at him.
There were no particular signs of anger on his face, nor of sadness. She watched him do the maths on it as he numbly looked down at the tests in his hand.
"Could be Dean's?" he asked, his eyes focused on her. She saw the slightest tinge of disappointment in his eyes.
She nodded and covered her face with her hands out of guilt and shame. But Harry had not left, so she was starting to be hopeful.
"I thought you were on birth control," Harry mumbled. It's why they had neglected to take any other precautions.
"I am— I was, maybe I forgot somewhere. I don't know," she confessed. It was all her fault of course.
Harry came to sit beside her, which surprised her. She looked at him, afraid to see pain in his eyes but they were soft and concerned.
"Do you think you'll keep it?" Harry asked.
Ginny couldn't make out his opinion on the matter and so she asked him first, so she'd have an honest reply, knowing her mind was already made up. "I want to know what you think first. I think I have made my decision, so I want to know your genuine thoughts."
"Gin… I— It's your body, I don't decide that," Harry told her.
She nodded. He'd want to give her the choice and she should have known he would. At least she knew he would accept her choice. "Yes, but this is our relationship and I want to know where you stand."
Harry glanced at the tests that were still in his hand. He put them beside him on the bed and looked at her. "Personally, I would keep it. I think it's special."
A huge wave of relief came over Ginny because it meant they wanted the same thing.
"Even if it's Dean's?" She was aware they were almost touching, their legs parallel with each other, shoulders almost bumping yet apart.
"It's not ideal, but yes even then still." He put a hand on her knee. "But what do you want?"
She sniffed; she had been on the edge of tears the whole time. "I want to keep it."
Harry inhaled sharply. "Right, so we are having a baby, then…" He squeezed her knee. "Honestly, I am a little relieved."
"Relieved?" she asked warily. It was the last emotion she would have expected from him right now.
"Well, you say you want to talk and then don't reply for hours. I was going through the worst-case scenarios in my head, I can tell you, a baby did not even make the top ten. I understand now why you didn't reply but…" He shook his head. "My worst fears all involved losing you."
She leaned against his shoulder. "I was worried you'd want to break up with me, and I wouldn't even blame you."
"So we love each other, don't want to lose each other and we have a baby on the way, I think it's safe to say we've gone well past phase three now."
How Harry had found it in himself to make a joke right now, she did not know but she did let out a dry chuckle.
He continued more seriously. "I wish I had been there when you found out, that must have been difficult… are you feeling okay?"
His compassion when she was feeling so many mixed emotions was too much to deal with and she finally burst into tears. "Stop being so nice to me! I don't deserve it!"
Harry immediately pulled her close. "Gin, you did nothing wrong. At most several people made some poor choices, including me."
They sat in silence, Ginny tucked against him as she dried her tears. Harry was rubbing comforting circles on her back.
The silence was broken after a few minutes when her stomach let out a loud rumble.
"I am going to go ahead and take a wild guess and assume you haven't eaten anything since you texted me."
She nodded. "Yeah."
"I still have to eat too, I can go and get take-out, I was thinking maybe Chinese?" he proposed.
Ginny agreed. She took another few deep breaths when Harry had left. This conversation had gone as well as it could have gone but there was still a worry he'd change his mind when he came back.
She went around the dorm and cleaned up some stuff so she did not have to sit around and wait until he came back.
Felicia returned to the dorm, looked at her and went, "You look like hell."
She threw her bag carelessly onto the table that Ginny had just cleared but this time she decided not to retort.
"Good evening to you too," she offered instead. Civility was quickly slipping between them and neither of them cared anymore. Ginny couldn't wait until the term was over and she'd be free of Felicia.
The door opened again and Harry walked back in, carrying the food. He showed her the bag as though he had been on a scavenger hunt.
"Ew, Chinese food," Felicia commented with a disgusted face.
Now that Harry was dating Ginny, Felicia was at much at war with him as she was with Ginny but Harry was happy to retort. Harry looked at her, his expression passive. "Good thing it isn't for you then."
They walked back to her room so they could talk further without Felicia overhearing them. Ginny grabbed cutlery and drinks on the way and closed her door.
They both sat on the ground, leaning against the wall sitting next to each other and put the food out.
"You know you do have to eat in time if you're going to grow a baby."
Ginny paused and met his eyes. He was considering the impact of this on their lives as much as she was. She nodded silently.
"I really wished I could have told best friend you and boyfriend you separately," Ginny admitted.
"Lucky you, you get two for the price of one," Harry quipped and then he realised what he had said. He grimaced. "Sorry."
"No, that was actually decently funny," Ginny commented though she wasn't laughing. Harry handed her the dumplings he knew she loved. She took one and bit into it. "Oh, you got the good dumplings."
"Evidently."
"You know I was trying to study when I found out? Can't remember a single word I've read," Ginny said, attempting to keep the conversation light.
"You still have time. I can help you go through your notes tomorrow, I believe I'm ahead of you," Harry replied without hesitation.
Ginny shook her head abruptly because that's not why she had mentioned it. "You don't have to," she told him. She watched Harry let out a sigh.
"But I'm going to," he responded, putting down his fork. "Come here." He held out his hands for her.
Ginny looked at him questioningly and remained seated. Harry grabbed onto her and pulled her into his lap. She wrapped her legs around him.
"I am your best friend, I love you and we make a great team. We're going to figure this out."
It was words of assurance she needed, and Harry had known that. She smiled a little. "I know this is a big decision to make and I am supposed to think about this longer, but I don't think I will change my mind."
Harry tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "We can sleep on it and see if we still feel the same way in the morning."
Harry kissed her and she returned the kiss but quickly leaned back when another question popped into her mind.
"I mean, did you even want kids, like ever?" She knew if he said he wanted this baby then she should just take that as it is, but it was still gnawing at her, what his choice would be if this hadn't happened.
Harry sighed. "Gin."
"Be honest."
"Fine," Harry said. "I wasn't really planning on dating until you happened and before that, I did not see myself having kids for the foreseeable future."
Ginny pursed her lips as she listened.
"Then we started dating and you keep talking about how I may be the one and how we could live together, of course kids had crossed my mind too. I know you want that and I was ready for that, eventually."
Ginny's posture deflated a little bit.
"You can still change your mind and if you want an abortion, I will support your decision." His finger came under her chin and lifted her head up, she looked into his eyes. "I genuinely want to have kids with you, but it's true that this is unexpected and complicated. It's up to you to say if and when."
She could always have kids with him later instead of this one, one they knew for sure was his. It made her happy that he did want it but the timing was terribly off. She considered it again, abortion, but found again that she would not be able to go through with it. "I can't."
"Can't what?" he asked with concern.
Ginny breathed out. "An abortion, I don't think I can. When I found out, it scared the hell out of me but I also felt as though… it was already set in stone, like there is a connection there."
"Okay," Harry said as if that decided it. He took another dumpling and held it out for her.
She bit into it and sat back down beside him. She pulled the container of rice to her. It was silent for a while as they ate, Ginny was pondering many things and she assumed Harry was doing the same.
"Are you sleeping?" Harry asked after a moment.
Ginny turned around to him, almost hitting him in the face with her elbow accidentally. "Am I sleeping? What do you think?" she snipped.
He carefully reached out and caressed her side. "I know."
She sighed deeply, looking at him in the dim room.
"Come here," he tried. It was unusual for her to sleep so far away from him, and it definitely did not help in getting him to sleep.
She scooted closer to him silently. He pressed a kiss against her forehead.
"No matter what happens, nothing is going to change overnight. Just try and relax," he tried.
Ginny sat up and pushed the blanket off her. "I am sorry. I am keeping you awake, feel free to go back to your own dorm."
Harry pushed up on his elbow and looked at her. "If you'll have me, I'd rather stay," he said.
Ginny looked at him and another sigh left her lips. "You are not going anywhere, are you?"
"No."
She nodded and laid down again. Harry put his arm around her and he closed his eyes. A moment later, Ginny's hand came to his shoulder and massaged the muscles up to his neck.
He opened one eye curiously and raised an eyebrow.
"If I am not sleeping, I may as well spend the time doing something useful," she clarified.
"It's nice," he commented. "Actually there's a knot there that could use... oh yes right there."
Ginny let out a soft chuckle, her fingers rubbing the muscles until they relaxed.
"Goodnight Gin. Love you," he said softly with his eyes closed.
It was silent for a moment. "Love you, Harry."
A/N: PSA: Apparently digital tests aren't as accurate as plain old simple ones but I didn't find that out until after I wrote this and I kind of needed it, you know, for the plot, so I left it as it was. But you know and you know I know. Cool.
