~RWBY: Vol6~
"Hold on, so let me see if we have this right." Yang said. "Celestial Knights are Cosmic Peacekeepers who travel from dimension to dimension, and are constantly working to keep balance to the multiverse and countless other dimensions?"
"You two are Celestial Knights, and are part of the most lethal faction known as the Archlich Core, and are also married to one another?" Blake asked.
"What you're doing here on Remnant, is to make sure that the balance isn't disturbed and to make sure Salem doesn't win or gets her hands on any of the relics?" Weiss inquired.
"An' you're telling us that the guy in black combat armor we saw at Haven was a member of Anti-Celestial Knights, known as the Dark Knights of Hell, a faction consisting of eight members, who are coming after you for revenge for killing their master, Velhallen Beo?" Ruby questioned.
"That about sums it up, yeah." Scythe said, drinking some coffee with Wendy leaning into him.
"You're not even human are you?" Weiss asked.
"1/3rd human." Scythe exclaimed. "I'm 1/3rd human, dragon, and demon. Though after my final battle with Beo, I'm starting to rethink that fractions number."
"Why do you say that?" Wendy asked. "Because your, healing factor and claws aren't magic, but a mutation?"
"That, and something else." Scythe said. "The little voice in my head I heard when Beo was leaving me to die, Cerenos, told me I was of his lineage, and something tells me he's not human."
"I thought we chalked that up to morbid hysteria?" Wendy questioned.
"We did, but something didn't add up about it. For one, Cerenos knew my healing factor was a mutation before me. Another was I could feel the energy in every word he said." Scythe exclaimed.
"It could be a psychic link you have with him. I mean, there are Semblances that allow that sort of thing." Weiss said. "But the name Beo, it sounds very familiar. Don't know why though, I just feel like I heard someone talking to someone with that name before."
"It's probably just your imagination." Ruby said.
"Now onto more important matters." Qrow exclaimed. "We're needing to get to the Kingdom of Atlas, specifically, we need to get the Relic there."
"We need to get the Relic to Atlas?" Ruby questioned.
"That's what Oz said." Qrow exclaimed, before everyone looked to Weiss.
"You've got to be joking." Weiss exclaimed.
"I mean, bright side." Nora piped up. "We finally get out of this house."
"Well trust me, I'm not crazy about it either." Qrow said. "An' without the Spring Maiden here to seal the Relic back in its Vault, it's our best option."
"Not that having her here would help." Scythe said, holding up a pair of silvery metal brass knuckles. "The Maiden's power was stripped from her because she had murdered the previous maiden to gain them. I had used these to open the Vault, and get the Relic."
"Then why not use them again to seal them back up?" Yang questioned, before she brought her hands up to catch the Maiden Powered Knuckles.
"Because it was a onetime use. It could only be done when the power was still melding and merging with the metal of those tungsten knuckles. Unless someone is willing to absorb the power, and let me strip them from you in order to do it, we're not gonna be putting the relic back in the Vault at all." Scythe said.
"How painful could it be?" Ruby asked.
"The woman I stripped the power from, will be paralyzed from the waist down for a month, and her nerves will be shot for twice as long." Scythe said.
"Oh, yeah none of us are willing to go through that." Yang said. "But why hand them to me?"
"You're the only one here, who's skilled in hand to hand combat besides Wendy and I, and since the power will only work for a woman, I'm not able to use them, and Wendy already has her own magic." Scythe explained. "You're the best option we have for wielding the Spring Maiden Power."
"So back to plan A." Qrow said.
"Atlas may be the safest kingdom we have at the moment, but their borders are closed." Ren exclaimed. "General Ironwood called everyone back."
"Eh, not everyone." Qrow said. "The city of Argus is a ways north of us, and it's the primary trading port between Anima and Solitas."
"They've got the largest Atlas Military Base, outside of the Kingdom." Scythe exclaimed. "There's no way, they'd leave it abandoned."
"An' if we play our cards right, I think there's a good chance we could convince them to escort us straight to Ironwood." Qrow added.
"I mean, we do have the missing Heiress to the Schnee Dust Company." Blake said.
"Ex-Heiress actually." Weiss said.
"True, true." Yang said, putting her bag down. "But if there's a chance for reward money, I say we go for it." She joked, getting a frustrated sigh from Weiss.
"Hopefully the first option will suffice." Ozpin said, having taken over Oscar again.
"Glad to see you're feeling better." Qrow said.
"Likewise, and while I'm sure we could all use more time to recover, I'm afraid time is of the essence." Ozpin said.
"Right, as long as that thing's out in the open, its power could fall into the wrong hands." Blake said, still having trouble adjusting to what she learned about Ozpin and the Maidens.
"Speaking of, what does it do exactly?" Jaune questioned, as he paused in sharpening his blade. "Qrow never really told us."
"Of course." Ozpin said, motioning his hand to Scythe, or more specifically, his waist where the lamp was hanging from. "The Relic of Knowledge has a wonderful, and incredibly dangerous ability. Its user can ask any question, and the lamp will provide an answer."
"Intriguing." Ren exclaimed.
"That's incredible." Blake said.
"Indeed." Ozpin smiled, before he frowned. "However it's not without drawbacks. The lamp cannot tell you of events that have yet to happen, and it will only ever answer three questions, every one hundred years."
"Well, I guess that's not so bad." Yang said. "Adds a lot of pressure though."
"Then let's put it to a vote." Nora said, zipping about excitedly. "What should we ask first? Oh. Can we ask for more questions, can we ask for more questions?"
"They're not wishes." Ren sighed.
"I'm afraid you won't be able to ask it anything at the moment. The questions were used, before I sealed it away." Ozpin said.
"Well, at least now we know what it is." Ruby said. "An' we'll be sure to keep it safe. We have a plan after all."
"An' if that plan doesn't work, you two show the guards at the Argus post your badges as Celestial Knights." Ozpin exclaimed looking to Scythe and Wendy.
"Uh, why would we do that?" Wendy questioned.
"Ironwood is a cautious man, but he's also cunning." Ozpin exclaimed. "A ways back, he had informed me that all his higher up staff, and elites, were all told about Celestial Knights, saying that if any were to appear, all they need do, is show them their badges, and they, along with whoever is with them, would be given first class treatment."
"So, not just the people in your inner circle, or Salem's inner circle, know that Celestial Knights exist, are a thing. Great." Scythe groaned.
"What's up with him?" Jaune asked.
"Back in our world, Scythe is a famous magazine model, and he can't even step outside without getting swarmed by fans." Wendy said. "He doesn't really like the attention, but his mom brought him into the profession for a reason." She said, reaching for the bag on her waist. "I think I actually have the latest issue he was in, somewhere here in my bag."
"Let us see." Yang smiled.
"Yang, why would you want to see him in a magazine?" Blake asked.
"Uh, he's ripped like hell, and looks like he could take on that Hazel guy, bare handed." Yang said, eyeing Scythe up and down. "Mama like."
"Yang, he's married." Weiss said.
"Doesn't mean there can't be room for a concubine or two." Yang smirked.
"Not happening." Scythe said.
"I'm not against the idea." Wendy chuckled, pulling the magazine out from her bag.
"Not you to." Scythe groaned.
~Two Weeks Later: Train Station~
"It's been two weeks, since the attack on Haven." Qrow read aloud the letter he was sending off to Ironwood. "The official report states, that the plot to destroy Mistral's CCT Tower was thwarted by Ghira Belladonna, and the Faunus Militia group from Menagerie. A couple Huntsmen, a Huntress, and some students coincidentally visiting the Headmaster, were also able to lead some assistance. Unfortunately, Leonardo Lionheart lost his life in the battle, while trying to defend his school, and those responsible for organizing the attack, managed to escape. As I'm sure you can guess, there's a lot more in this report, than I'm willing to say in this letter, but for now, what I'm trying to say is, we're on our way to Atlas, James. There's a good chance we'll get there before this letter does, but in case we don't, I need you to know we're bringing a lot more than bad news with us. See ya soon, Qrow." He finished off, sealing the envelope and putting it in the mailbox at the train station, before Ruby bumped into him as she ran past him. "Hey what's with the running?"
"No, what's with the standing? It's almost time." Ruby said excitedly before she rounded to corner to several other shops. Zipping her way through the station with her Semblance, Ruby went to a shop, before she went to where her friends were, all of them, including the two Celestial Knights, who had some additions added to their attires, curtesy of Yang and Blake, and their fashion senses, with a childish happy look on her face.
Scythe's attire was accompanied by an open front leather trenchcoat with a hood, and some armor platings sewn into the material on the back like a puzzle, while Wendy's attire was accompanied by a scarf around her neck, a red bandana tied around her right thigh where the stocking ended, and a jacket matching Blake's, but was silver instead of white.
"And?" Yang questioned, not liking how Ruby was keeping her waiting for the souvenir.
"Aah." Ruby cheered happily.
"What an absolute waste of time."
"What'd you get me?" Yang asked excitedly.
"You'll have to wait and see." Ruby said teasingly.
"No fair." Yang said as Ruby stuck her tongue out, before she tried to grab the bag from her.
"They are just like their Earthland counter parts." Wendy chuckled.
"Oh, I can't believe we're taking the train to Argus." Nora said. "Beautiful norther coastline. You think it's too early for beach season?"
"Unfortunately." Ren said as the image of him in his mind, at the beach with a beach ball, popped and he seemed a little down about that. "But, we will be one step closer to Atlas."
"That's true, but given my track record, something bad is bound to happen eventually." Scythe said.
"Well I'm glad you're all excited, but I don't think you appreciate the trouble I went through to leave Atlas." Weiss said.
"I know you're worried Weiss, but trust us. Team RWBY won't leave your side for a second, I promise." Ruby smiled, making the heiress feel a bit better.
"No one's gotta be worried with us around." A voice spoke up as two men, one carrying a spiked club, another carrying a rifle, came up to the group.
"An' you are?" Nora questioned.
"Oh great, Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber." Scythe groaned, causing Wendy to laugh. "What'd the Circus kick you boys out?"
"Hey watch it pal."
"We're Dee and Dudley, at your service." The first guy to speak, Dee, said introducing him and his partner. "The Argus Limited's very own Huntsmen. We'll be keeping everyone safe, as we pass through Grimm Territory."
"But, for a generous tip, we can make sure your passenger car, gets extra special attention." Dudley said. "Should things, get dangerous." He winked at them.
None of the girls were amused, not even Wendy, as she knew their type, as all the girls just rolled their eyes at them in annoyance.
"I have a tip for you bozos." Scythe said, stepping in their line of sight. "Beat it. We're fine on our own. Man, Mistral must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel these days."
"Watch it punk, you're talking to a…"
"Yeah-yeah, a couple of professional Huntsmen." Scythe said, holding up his Scroll and showing he had a Huntsman License of his own as both he and Wendy had been given licenses by Shirou and Rin before they left for their mission. "I'm not impressed. In fact, you're both rather subpar for Huntsmen. For example, one of you heroes left the staff entrance to the caboose wide open."
"It'd be a shame to lose your job, before it even started." Qrow said, joining the group and standing next to Scythe.
"I, I didn't do it." Dudley said in a panicked tone.
"Gah, come one dummy." Dee said patting his shoulder and heading back for marching off away with his partner.
"I do hope those weren't Beacon Graduates." Ozpin's voice echoed in Oscar's mind.
"You know, sometimes the burden of saving the world, feels overwhelming, but then people like that come along and makes me grateful it's our job and not theirs." Oscar said.
"Mmhmm." Everyone nodded in agreement.
"So, you kids ready to go?" Qrow questioned. "Bike all loaded up?"
"Yep." Yang smiled.
"Just waiting on Blake, as usual." Weiss said.
Up on the balcony walkway, Blake was saying her goodbyes to Ilia, and was happy to see she was making a new name for herself.
"I still don't feel like I deserve the freedom you and your family have granted me." Ilia said.
"Well, you're gonna have to get over it Ilia." Blake smiled. "Saving Haven had a huge impact on how Faunus are seen in Mistral. Now it's up to you all, to take the progress, and keep running with it." Blake exclaimed.
"Right." Ilia said. "The White Fang may have been a failure, but with your father starting up a new movement, I've got more faith than ever before." She smiled, before she ran to Blake, and pulled her into a hug. "Thank you Blake, for everything. I wish you didn't have to go." She sniffled.
"I know, but my team needs me." Blake said as they separated the hug. "We're gonna track down the people responsible for the attack on Haven and the Fall of Beacon."
"Always trying to save the world." Ilia smiled.
"More than you realize." Blake said.
"Hey, I know your parents, already saw you off but, where's…"
"Sun? Oh, he's right here." Sun exclaimed making his appearance behind Blake. The Faunus girl just turned and smiled at Ilia, before going to where her blonde monkey friend was. "What, you didn't think I was gonna miss your big send off, did ya?"
"He definitely overslept and absolutely almost missed this." A blue haired boy with a red jacket and goggles, and a black eye and a missing tooth, said popping up from behind him.
"Shhh." Sun hushed his best friend, causing Blake to laugh, before Neptune pushed Sun forward.
"Hey Blake." Neptune smiled. "Now would you hurry up? Need I remind you, we have our own trip to plan?" He scolded Sun, before spotting Ilia. "Oh. I didn't know Ilia was gonna be here. I'll give you two a moment." He said, walking past them toward Ilia. "Heya, almost didn't see ya there, cause you know the, the camouflage?"
"Wrong tree." Blake said.
"He'll figure it out." Sun chuckled.
"What happened to his face?" Blake inquired.
"He tried flirting with that blue haired girl with the spears and the sniper rifle, what was her name?" Sun asked.
"Wendy?"
"Yep her. As you can see, her husband didn't take that too well." Sun exclaimed.
"Oh Scythe is definitely protective of his wife." Blake chuckled. "He is a dragon after all."
"You mean like a Dragon Faunus? Huh, that's cool." Sun smiled. "I thought they were all extinct, guess not."
"So, you're really going to Vacuo?" Blake asked.
"That's right." Sun said. "Seeing you reunited with the rest of Team RWBY made me realize something. I'm like, the worst team leader ever. Me and the boys were cool with a little hiatus, but we gotta make up for lost time. Shade Academy's not dealing with any problems like Haven right now, plus that means I can show the guys around my old stomping grounds."
"I have to admit, I think I was kinda getting used to having you around." Blake said.
"I go where I'm needed." Sun said, trying to sound like a valiant knight in shining armor. "An', you don't need me anymore."
"Well when you say it like that, it sounds sad." Blake said, her ears drooping.
"Look." Sun said, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Despite the drama, the fighting, and the numerous attempts on my life, I had a lot of fun. But you're with who you're supposed to be now." He exclaimed directing Blake's attention to where her other friends were, noticing how Yang and Ruby were playing tug-o-war with the souvenir bag Ruby had.
"Sun…" Blake paused. "I don't think I'll ever be able to thank you enough. I'm still um…"
"You're still working a lot of things out." Sun said. "I know. But you can do it with them. An' in the future, who knows? I've got a feeling you haven't seen the last of me."
"I certainly hope not." Blake smiled, before she stepped up, and planted a kiss on his cheek.
Later on, as Blake went to join the rest of her teammates and friends, Sun and Neptune were walking down an opposite flight of stairs, with Neptune sporting a hand print on his right cheek added to his facial injuries.
"I don't know man. It feels like you're just letting her go." Neptune said, his words slurred a bit from the swollen cheek.
"It was never about that Brainiac." Sun exclaimed. "Besides, now that your leader's back, and hardened from battle, I gotta focus all of my time into getting you boys, ready for the wastelands."
Neptune, was not looking forward to that, at all as he was wondering if it was too late to join Team RWBY on their journey.
~Train to Argus a couple Hours Later~
Team RWBY were sitting in their room in the train car, each of them taking the same area bunkbeds they had back at Beacon, but were now on actua lbunk beds, instead of unstable makeshift ones.
Ruby was playing the latest videogame she had purchased from the souvenir shop at the Argus station.
Weiss was reading a novel, while occasionally smacking Ruby's cloak out of her eye sight.
Blake was looking out the window thinking about how she'd want to make things right between her and her teammates, after she just up and abandoned them like she did after Beacon Fell.
Yang was reading Wendy's copy of Sorcerer Weekly, while also ignoring the billions of questions coming from her dad via text, about how she got her arm back. She found the magazine from another universe to be very entertaining, and even read the section on Scythe, multiple times.
"Alright girls. I think it's time for an official team exercise." Ruby said, after she lost in her game. "Who wants to play videogames?"
"I mean, if you want me to kick your butt, yeah sure." Yang said, hopping down from her bunk. "Let me grab my Scroll."
"Hey girls." Scythe said, coming to their room with a soda in hand and Wendy beside him. "Wendy and I have been talking and we've got something we'd like to discuss with you." Scythe said.
"Later, you wanna play videogames to?" Ruby asked.
"Kick your butts? Sure I'm in for some games." Scythe smiled before the train began to shake like there was a large impact from something slamming into it.
"What was that?" Yang questioned.
"Exactly what it sounds like." Weiss said.
"Just my luck." Blake groaned.
"It's not your." Qrow said, entering the room. "Grab your weapons."
Yang reached into her pocket and put on her newly built Ember Celica onto her right arm and cocked them both, before they all followed Qrow, Wendy, and Scythe, out to the top of the train with their weapons ready to fight the Grimm attacking the train.
When they got up there, they saw the Grimm were Manticore and Chimera, Anima's more dangerous species of Grimm in the northern regions, and the Dummy twins were already on the job fighting them. Doing poorly at that, while the seven were getting ready to lend a hand.
"Honey, I think this might require a sharper blade." Wendy said.
"I think you might be right." Scythe agreed, as they stepped forward. "The rest of you mind providing cover fire and support?" He inquired.
"Whatever you've got planned, I hope it's a good idea." Qrow said.
"Oh trust us." Wendy smiled. "We're just getting started."
(Cue Music… I'm Dangerous: Everlove)
Scythe and Wendy went running towards the Grimm, with Scythe's body beginning to glow brightly before he jumped into the air, and began spinning around, before he came back down in his weapon form, landing in Wendy's hands as she spun him around, before she jumped high into the air, landing on the roof of the same train car as Dee and Dudley, right in front of them, before she swung one of Scythe's blades forward, and a crescent blade of black flames shot out towards the Grimm. The Chimera jumped into the air, evading the flames at the last second while most of the others became engulfed in them.
Wendy looked up into the air, and jumped after the Chimera, and landed on the mountain wall, pushing off it with enough force, to reach air higher than the Chimera, and sent herself spinning forward, looking like a spinning saw blade as she fell forward, and only managed to nick the Chimera's wing, forcing it to the roof of the train, before Wendy landed on the metal surface in front of the Grimm. Jumping back, and landing on one hand, Wendy pushed up and back towards Dee and Dudley, or rather just Dudley now, before skidding to a halt.
"Bastard's faster than he looks." Wendy smirked, spinning Scythe around. "This is gonna be fun."
"Remember Wendy, we have to keep the people on the train safe, that's our top priority." Scythe said.
"I know." Wendy smiled. "But that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun with it, right?"
"Go nuts babe." Scythe smiled.
Wendy ran at the Chimera Grimm, and threw Scythe at it, spinning like a shurikan before the Chimera moved its head out of the way. With blinding speed, and sky blue lightning, Wendy was instantly behind the Chimera, and grabbed Scythe by the hilt, before she swung him across the Grimm's neck, and decapitated the Grimm.
Landing on the train roof once again, Wendy saw that Dudley was running further up ahead of the train, and she could smell the ammonia soaking his pants.
"Some brave Huntsman he is." Wendy said as Scythe reverted from his weapon form.
"C'mon, we need to see how the others are handling themselves." Scythe said before they went running up further to other train cars, before the echoing sound of turrets and cannons were heard through the air. "No, that dumbass. He's gonna lead the Grimm right to the passenger cars." He exclaimed as he spotted several of the Manticore Grimm already destroying some of the guns.
"Looks like Team JNPR has joined in on the action." Wendy said.
"An' it looks like Qrow told Oscar to get that idiot to turn the turrets off." Scythe said. "He's a novice at fighting. He's just putting the passengers in danger."
"Hold on, something isn't right." Wendy said. "The Grimm are fleeing."
"Not fleeing, regrouping. Look." Scythe said, pointing up ahead past Oscar and Dudley.
"TUNNEL." Oscar shouted.
Wendy and Scythe looked to one another, before Scythe grabbed Wendy and used his lightning magic to race through the air, and bring everyone into the car safely. All that was left was the dumbass who turned on the turrets.
"Hey, we gotta go now." Scythe said, grabbing his shoulder.
"You're not my boss. The Grimm are fleeing, this is our chance at victory." Dudley said.
"You idiot, did you not hear the kid shout tunnel?" Scythe questioned, before he grabbed Dudley, and threw him down into the spaces between the cars, before quickly following, but was too slow as the tunnel came up, and took his left arm at the elbow.
(End Song…)
"GAH." Scythe cried out, as he landed on the platform. Forcing the door open, Scythe came wobbling in, the others gasping when they saw his arm was gone.
"What the hell happened?" Yang questioned.
"Ask Dudley Dumbass." Scythe growled, as the blonde helped him sit down. "He didn't believe Oscar was telling the truth about the tunnel, so I had to throw him down, but when I jumped down, I was a bit too slow."
"Are you gonna be okay? Don't you have a healing factor?" Blake asked.
"Yeah but I've never had to regrow my limbs before, and my healing factor isn't as fast as my Grandpa Login's, so I'm not gonna be of much help until it grows back." Scythe exclaimed as his healing factor stopped the bleeding.
"How long?" Jaune asked.
"I'd say… I'll be completely back to normal sometime this evening or the following day." Scythe exclaimed.
"So we're down one of our heaviest hitters, thanks to this dumb shit knuckle head." Qrow inquired. "I said, turn those damn things off."
"Those, things, are keeping us alive." Dudley exclaimed.
"Us sure, but they're putting the passengers in danger." Qrow said. "An' what's worse, your pride and stupidity injured one of our big hitters."
"I'm the one they hired for this job okay? I'm in charge here."
"Forgive me if I'm not exactly reassured." Qrow exclaimed.
The sound of a baby crying caught Wendy, Scythe, and Ruby's attention as they looked back to see the passengers all scared for their lives. Scythe groaned, before he forced himself to his feet, and stepped towards Dudley.
"Look, if you bozos had been doing your job, instead of shaking down passengers, maybe we wouldn't be in this…"
"Qrow." Scythe said. "That's enough."
Qrow stepped back as Scythe stepped forward, looking Dudley in the eye, before pulling up a Scroll, not his own, and shut the turrets off.
"There, problem solved." Scythe said, before shattering the communications device. "Permanently."
"What the?" Dudley searched his pockets, to find his Scroll had been swiped. When he looked up, his head was knocked back and a crack sound came from his neck, before he slumped to the ground.
"There we go, out like a light." Wendy said, dusting off her hands. "Alright, Colonel Dumbass is unconscious, and the other passengers are in the car behind us. Let's start cooking up a plan."
"Ren, think you could use your Semblance to mask everyone on this train?" Scythe inquired, turning to the green clad boy. "With the guns off, and the emotions hidden, we should be able to lose the Grimm tailing us."
"I've never attempted to affect this many people." Ren exclaimed.
"That's okay. Jaune, think you can give him a boost with your Semblance?" Wendy inquired.
"Definitely." Jaune said.
"Don't look so worried Ren. You can totally do this." Nora said.
"I'm afraid there's one complication." Ozpin said, having taken control of Oscar again, and walking up to Scythe. "The Grimm are also attracted to that." He pointed out, gesturing to the lamp on Scythe's waist.
"Oz, are you serious?" Qrow questioned.
"Why wouldn't you tell us that?" Yang questioned.
"I…"
"It doesn't matter right now." Ruby said, silencing her team, but that didn't mean they liked it. "Every second we're aboard this train, we're putting everyone else in danger. Get all the passengers to the front cars. You'll still mask the emotions with the turrets disabled. We just can't come with you."
"You mean I can't come with you." Scythe exclaimed. "I'm the one who's carrying the Relic. I'll stay behind and lead the Grimm away from the others. If you cut the back cars with me, and the Relic on them, I can still fight off the Grimm. I might be down an arm, but I'm still more than half the fighter I am. You just make sure the rest of the train, makes it safely to Argus."
"No Scythe, we're not leaving you to fend for yourself on your own." Ruby said. "Team RWBY will come with you."
"Same here. I'd like to see how a Celestial Knight handles himself in a fight." Qrow smiled.
"I'll be coming to. I'd feel much safer if I kept the Relic in my sights." Ozpin said. "I mean no offense to your skills, it's just for my own sanity I wish to see this through."
"Scythe this is not up for debate." Ruby said.
"Fine." He groaned. "Wendy, you stay with Jaune, Ren, and Nora. Make sure the rest of the train gets to Argus in one piece."
"What about you?" Wendy inquired.
"I'll be fine, don't worry." Scythe said pulling a chain out from around his neck, showing the ring on it, beside it was his half of the pendent he'd gotten from her on his last day at Akane Resort that said, remember me. "Remember, I always keep this with me when we're apart, you gave this to me when you nursed me back to health."
"Carla was actually the one who snuck those onto the plushy's." Wendy said, pulling out hers with her wedding band, engagement ring, and the broken heart half that said, I will return.
"I'm glad she did." He chuckled. "Because I think of you every time I look at it."
"Come back to me as fast as you can." Wendy said.
"I will, I promise." Scythe smiled, before giving her a kiss. "Alright people, let's set our plan into motion."
(Cue Music… SCAVA: Hollywood Undead)
With their plan set in motion, the others began guiding the passengers into the first set of cars while they were still in the tunnel, trying to keep them calm as they went rushing through the train cars.
When all the passengers were in the upper cars, Blake went and decoupled the empty cars from the ones the passengers were in. upon looking up after decoupling the cars, Blake's eyes widened when she spotted Adam across from her on the other car. Jumping back and pulling Gambol Shroud from its bladed sheath, Blake was ready to fight, but when she looked up again, Adam was gone. Figuring it was just an illusion, Blake put Gambol Shroud away, and jumped up to the top cars, joining the rest of her team and Scythe and Oscar just as the Grimm came out of the tunnel.
After making sure all the passengers were secure, Ren and Jaune got to work on hiding all the passenger's emotions, while using both their Semblances.
With the Grimm on the cars they could sense, the fight for survival was on, as Scythe wielded Grimm Reaper in his right hand, fighting off Chimera and Manticore's. With the Relic in his possession, Scythe was the target the Grimm were aiming to take down. Wendy made sure to leave him with some of his weapons from the pouch on her hip, to better protect himself.
Oscar was at his back, fighting alongside him, using the skills he's been gaining from Ozpin, to good use, and fending off the Manticore with Scythe, evading any and all its lethal blows, from either its claws or its stingers.
Ruby was doing her best with her scythe wielding skills, keeping the Manticore she was facing from reaching Scythe and the Relic.
Yang was showing her skills as she and another Manticore charged at one another, and she grabbed it by the horns, twisting it around before she knocked it off the train with a shot to the head from a right hook with Ember Celica.
Blake had Gambol Shroud in its sickle form, and was using the ribbon to swing it around, pushing the Manticore back. Once it was far enough away, she sheathed Gambol Shroud's main blade and went running for the Manticore, leaving a shadow clone in her stead to take the stinger as she jumped on its back and cut off its tail, causing the Grimm to roar in pain.
Ruby swung Crescent Rose at the Grimm, before she went rushing behind it, and used Crescent Rose to hook its back legs and pulled, severing them from the Manticore's body before the cut off its head. Jumping from the dissipating Grimm's body, Ruby jumped onto the next one and cut off its wing before jumping back and sending an armor piercing round through its skull, killing it.
Landing on the Train Car's roof beside Weiss, Ruby saw that Oscar and Scythe were having a bit of trouble with their Manticore. With perfect timing, Weiss knocked an oncoming Manticore off balance and Ruby used Crescent Rose to send it into the Grimm Scythe and Oscar were facing, knocking both to the forest ground below the train tracks.
Turning to Ruby, Scythe smiled and nodded in gratitude, before he went running in their direction, and passed Team RWBY. Following where he was going, Ruby saw that Scythe was heading for the Chimera Grimm, planning on lending Qrow a hand in dealing with the ringleader of the horde of Grimm. With all the Manticore in the area dealt with, Team RWBY decided to lend a helping hand, with Weiss using her Glyphs to get there as if she were skating on ice, Ruby pierced the top hull of the car she was on to ground Crescent Rose, as she fired shot after shot at the Chimera.
"We need to ground it." She told Blake.
"On it." The Faunus girl said, before she turned around, finding Yang was fighting against one more Manticore. "Yang." She called as she changed Gambol Shroud to its sickle form.
Yang jumped onto the Manticore's face, firing off Ember Celica as she jumped off the Grimm, and over her partner and sister, running towards the Chimera. Using Ember Celica's recoil to send her forward, Yang slid under the Chimera to the other side of it. Spinning Gambol Shroud around, Blake sent the sickled blade towards Yang over the Chimera, who then used Ember Celica to send the weapon under the Chimera in a loop, repeating this process until Yang punched down with a shot from Ember Celica, imbedding the blade into the metal ground, and pulling hard, with Blake doing the same, grounding the Chimera to the train.
Taking this as her cue, Weiss slid in front of the Manticore on her glyphs, and created four more, two on each of its wings, covering them in ice, before Scythe came up to the Chimera, jumping from the side and shattering both its wings to shards of ice, causing both its main head, and snake head, to cry out in pain and rage.
Qrow and Ruby smiled as they both knew what to do. Taking their weapons, Qrow turned his into a scythe, with Ruby taking Crescent Rose out of the roof of the train car, before they both went charging at the Chimera, using the recoil of their weapons to increase their speeds, as they both cut the Grimm in half at the torso.
Unfortunately, the Grimm had been preparing one final attack, and as it fell over, the fireball was launched and hit the tracks ahead. Thinking quickly, Weiss created a black glyph for everyone to keep them all in place as the train derailed, and went into the snowbanks below, throwing Weiss off her concentration and everyone into the snow.
(End Song…)
"Is everyone okay?" Qrow asked, picking himself up from the fluffy frozen water.
"I'm fine." Weiss said.
"Yeah." Blake added.
"Still alive." A new voice said from inside the train car.
Everyone who got up looked towards the car's entrance and saw an old woman with white hair, and big clunky mechanical eyes and glasses, and a skull themed cane, coming out of the train car.
"That sure was a close one huh?" She smiled looking to all of them.
"I thought everybody was off the train?" Scythe questioned, looking to Blake.
"They were supposed to be." Blake said.
"Great, this is just great." Yang said as she pulled at Bumblebee, her bike that got stuck and buried in the snow. "We're stranded. We lost a third of our party, and we have gained, a defenseless old lady." She groaned before falling to the ground as she pulled her bike out.
"My name is Maria Calavera, and I am not defenseless." The woman said, as Oscar was helping her out. "I'm just a little hard of hearing, and blind without my eyes." She exclaimed, tapping the big metal object on her face. "That are in desperate need of repair. Okay, I'm starting to see your point."
"Scythe, couldn't you do for her what you did for Yang?" Weiss asked.
"If I had both my arms and her artificial eyes weren't so big and clunky sure, but with that design, what remains of her artificial eyes, will probably disfigure her face for good. I'm not risking it. It worked with Yang's arm because it had the right dimensions and amount of materials." Scythe said.
"Yang, knock it off, will ya?" Qrow questioned. "If we lose our cool now, we'll just be inviting even more Grimm."
"Does that even matter?" Blake questioned. "Apparently we've been attracting Grimm since we left Haven."
"Oh, and how could I forget about that? What happened to no more lies and half-truths?" Yang questioned Oscar, wanting to get Ozpin to come out and talk.
"Yeah, I think it's time we got an explanation." Oscar said, before his eyes lit up and Ozpin took control.
"Well out with it old man, the file I read on the Relics didn't exactly have everything, and left out the part where they could attract Grimm." Scythe exclaimed.
"I did not, lie to you." Ozpin said.
"Well, you certainly didn't tell us everything about the Relic." Weiss exclaimed.
"Please, now is not the time." Ozpin tried to plead.
"No, we're passed that." Yang said. "I wanna know why you're still not telling us everything."
"It is true that the Grimm are attracted to the Relics. It's faint, but undeniable. I believe it has to do with their origin, but I'm not entirely sure. Regardless, I feared that making you all aware would only add anxiety and negativity. It seemed like the safer option." Ozpin said.
"You know, I'm getting real tired of people choosing what's best for me." Weiss said.
"Okay so why hide this little fact from me?" Scythe questioned. "Or Wendy. If we'd have known this we could have put the Relic in something that would have concealed whatever attracts the Grimm."
"Is that why you chose to lie to everyone about Lionheart to?" Yang asked.
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I believed the Kingdom of Mistral deserved better than the truth. An' I believed Leonardo deserved to be remembered for his lifetime of service, and not the unfortunate missteps he made in his final years."
"Missteps?" Yang questioned.
"What Professor Lionheart did was reprehensible. I am not here to argue differently, but does one lapse in judgement truly negate all of his good? Do we not all have regrets?" Ozpin questioned.
"He delivered every single Huntsmen and Huntress working under him, to Salem on a Silver Platter." Scythe said. "He's the reason why they're all dead, he's the reason why children have to go without their mother's, their fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents. All of those people had family that he took them away from."
"You may have met professor Lionheart, but you never met the man he was before Salem found him." Ozpin said.
"Look, we're supposed to be in this together." Yang said. "You can trust us. We're not gonna turn our backs on you."
"Do you really think Leo was the first?" Ozpin questioned. "That he didn't say those exact same words to me? I'm sorry but you have to understand that my behaviors are backed by experience. I'm not saying that I have reason to think that you will betray me. I'm saying I have reasons for the things that I do. The secrets I keep. The reason I…" Ozpin stopped when he saw the Relic wasn't on Scythe's hip anymore. "Where's the Relic?" He questioned.
"Right here." Scythe said, holding it up. "I think it's time we got some actual answers, and if not from you, than from someone who knows."
"Scythe what are you doing? You can't ask any more questions, they were all used up." Qrow said.
"No they weren't." Scythe said, Ozpin's eyes widening. "No matter how good you are at lying, your voice will always betray you. Wendy and I knew he was lying when he said the questions were used up, because his voice cracked. It was faint, but with our advanced hearing, we could hear it."
"Scythe, I understand you hold more authority than me, but I think it would be best if I took care of it from here, so please hand it over." Ozpin said.
"So…" Ruby began gaining everyone's attention. "All those times you talked about having faith in humanity, that was just for everyone else?"
"That's not what I meant to suggest." Ozpin said. "Mr. Strauss, I appreciate you carrying the Relic, but it is a powerful burden to bear, one I feel must be carried out by me, so I'll take it from here."
"But, you said it couldn't be used right now." Ruby said.
"Why does it matter who carries it?" Blake questioned. "Unless what Scythe said about you lying, was true."
"I need you to listen to me…" Ozpin froze as Oscar was fighting him to stop.
"Oz?" Qrow questioned.
"Oscar is fighting against him, trying to keep him from taking the Relic back from me." Scythe said, as the Relic grew to normal size.
"Hurry." Oscar said. "He's trying to stop you."
"Stop him from what?" Yang questioned.
"He's afraid, you'll find out what he's…"
"He's afraid we'll find out what he's been hiding from us." Scythe said.
"Don't you know what he's hiding?"
"All I know is his actual name, Ozma, and his reincarnation abilities." Scythe said. "The rest, my grandpa either didn't have on hand, or deliberately kept hidden from me."
"Her name, is Jinn. Say her name to summon her." Oscar said.
Scythe looked at the Relic in his hand, and back to Oscar, realizing that's how the Relic worked as it began to glow.
"Her name?" Ruby questioned.
"Jinn." Scythe said.
Almost instantly, the snow stopped falling and stood in place like time had become frozen all around them.
"What?" Qrow questioned.
The Relic in Scythe's hand began to glow, before it floated away a short distance behind the group, and blue smoke began to rise from it, before the smoke took form as a blue skinned woman, clad in chains, and nothing else. She looked like an undressed version of the statue that had acted as the doorway to Haven's vault.
"Wonderful." She smiled after stretching. "Tell me, what knowledge do you seek?" She questioned, her voice sounding familiar to Scythe.
"Her voice, it sounds like… Erza." Scythe said.
"Who?" Ruby asked.
"A red haired friend of mine, looks like a more armored and intense version of Pyrrha." Scythe exclaimed.
Maria tapped her mechanical eyes to make sure she wasn't seeing things.
"I am Jinn. A being created by the God of Light to aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge." Jinn said. "I've been graced with the ability to answer three questions every one hundred years. You're in luck, as I am still able to answer…"
"That's enough." Ozpin shouted.
"Two questions, this era." Jinn said, as the others looked to him. "It's a pleasure to see you again old man." Jinn chuckled.
"Scythe, please, don't." Ozpin pleaded.
"Hey." Qrow began before the others pulled their weapons out, minus Scythe and Ruby. "Do whatever you think is right, your Excellency." Qrow said, raising his hands in surrender to show he wanted to know the truth to.
"Jinn?" Scythe began.
"Oh my stars, a Celestial Knight." Jinn said, before bowing to him. "I am at your service, great one."
"What is Ozpin hiding from us?"
"NO." Ozpin shouted, before he went running at him to stop the question from being answered.
But before Ozpin could do anything, the world around them, became a white Canvas, as Jinn, began the story.
"So this is how it begins huh?" Scythe inquired, looking around.
"Once upon a time." Jinn's voice echoed out around him as a castle scene came into view. "There stood a lonely tower, that sheltered a lonely girl." The scene changed from outside the castle, to inside the tower where a young woman with blonde hair, sitting in front of a mirror, putting her brush down, as she began to turn around. "Named, Salem."
~Grimm Lands~
The skies were dark as the Nevermores cawed at the oncoming airship that was heading straight for the castle. The atmosphere on the airship was one of gloom and anger as its passengers were in a bit of a foul mood. Docking at the castle, the passengers of the airship departed, led by the newcomer who had aided them in their escape. The four stopped when they saw the sociopath Faunus, Tyrian standing at the entrance to the castle.
"Welcome back, welcome back." Tyrian smiled, the nub of what used to be his tail waving about behind him. "I do hope you missed us as much as we missed you."
"Let's go." Hazel said.
The group continued walking, making their way passed Tyrian, as the Dark Knight of Hell, was the only one not really affected by their loss, but that's when Tyrian began speaking up.
"Mm, speaking of which, where is our Fall Maiden?" Tyrian questioned. When he didn't get a response, he faked a gasp of shock, before he began giggling like the maniac he is.
"Move it green hair." The Dark Knight said. "We don't have time, for your pointless concerns about what a psychopath thinks."
"Don't tell me something happened to her." Tyrian said, in a mocking voice before he began laughing.
"I will cut off more, than just your tail." Emerald said, pulling out her weapons and pointing them at Tyrian.
"Stand down." The Dark Knight said coming down the steps to Emerald's side. "Or do I need to render you unconscious again?"
"Careful little girl." Tyrian said walking up to Emerald, and getting in her face. "Cinder isn't here to protect you anymore." He rubbed his cheek against one of Emerald's blades, cutting himself and growling at her.
"Back off freak." Mercury said, standing up to Tyrian.
"Oh don't misunderstand. I am in mourning just as you. Because it appears you failed our Queen, and that is a tragedy." Tyrian exclaimed.
"Says the guy who got half his tail cut off by a little girl, and thus failed in his mission." The Dark Knight said. "C'mon you three, the Queen awaits."
~Castle Great Hall~
Sometime had passed since the groups encounter with Tyrian, as the Faunus now sat at his place at Cinder's table with the Dark Knight now sitting across from him, while Hazel, Emerald, and Mercury, knelt in front of the table with their heads bowed. Across from them at the head of the table was a woman in black, with bone white skin and red eyes, with veins traveling across her arms and every visible part of her skin.
"I would like you to explain to me, how it is you failed, so spectacularly." Salem said.
"The Faunus militia split our forces." Hazel said.
"Stop." Salem said. "Let me rephrase the question. Who, is responsible for your defeat?"
There was a moment of silence before Hazel stood up and looked Salem in the eyes.
"I take full responsibility." Hazel said.
The instant he said that, the table flipped and Salem came marching up to him as Tyrian and Arthur Watts, jumped back, while the Dark Knight, just stood up.
"But that, wouldn't be fair now, would it?" Salem questioned. "We all know, who's truly to blame." She said reaching out her hand.
"I don't…"
Salem twisted her hand up, and multiple Geist hands sprouted from the ground, and pulled Hazel down to his hands and knees keeping him in that position as there was a tense moment of silence before someone spoke up.
"Celestial Knights were there." The Dark Knight said.
Salem straightened her back, and turned to look at the Dark Knight, as if she had misheard him.
"Could you, repeat that for me?" Salem questioned.
"Celestial Knights were there to keep Haven from falling." He said. "An' they stripped the Spring Maiden of her power. They were from the Archlich Core."
Salem was silent for a moment before she snapped her fingers and released Hazel from his punishment.
"This is a problem." Salem said.
"My Queen, I thought the Celestial Knights were ignoring your requests for aid?" Hazel questioned.
"They were." Salem said. "But it's obvious that they're not here to help me fulfill my desires. In fact, they sent the best of their best. The Archlich Core is a faction of the Celestial Knights, who are the most dangerous and lethal fighters the Celestial Knights have to offer. They are one step down, from the head of the Celestial Knight's himself."
"If they're here, then it means to them, whatever Salem is doing, will disrupt the balance of the cosmos. It's a Celestial Knights duty to maintain that balance, and make sure the scales don't tip too far in one direction or another." The Dark Knight said.
"An' who are you again?" Mercury asked.
"That's right. You haven't officially been introduced. This is the Grim Knight, a member of a group of fighters similar to the Celestial Knights, but are the exact opposite." Salem said.
"Our leader, Velhallen Beo was murdered by the Celestial Knight who held the Relic, and defeated Cinder." Grim said. "The Dark Knights seek out true order and balance in the cosmos, and in order for that balance to be achieved, it must first rain chaos and destruction among the masses of all the universe."
"You'll find that the Dark Knights, are far stronger than the Celestial Knights. In fact, a Dark Knight's power far surpasses a Celestial Knight's." Salem smiled. "Where a Celestial Knight is always paired and partnered up, a Dark Knight needs only themselves, and no one else."
"For the Dark Knights are superior to the Celestial Knights in every way possible." Grim said.
"Now that we've gotten all that out of the way, let us return to business. The sword under Vacuo's Academy Shade…"
"Ma'am." Hazel interrupted. "I have… more to report." He said hesitantly. "Qrow and the children are taking the lamp to Atlas."
"Not if I can help it." Tyrian smirked as he laughed.
"An' they're being led."
"Yes, by a Celestial Knight." Watts said.
"No, not by a Celestial Knight." Hazel exclaimed. "By Ozpin."
"So soon." Tyrian exclaimed.
"He's the only man with a chance of getting through to Ironwood." Watts added. "If that happens then…" Watts paused when the sound of cracking glass echoed around the room, as it was clear Salem was in a mood now.
"Leave." She said.
"Your Grace, I can…" Tyrian paused as he cowered before her, and the glass cracking got worse.
Emerald was about to have a panic attack, before Hazel put a hand on her shoulder to bring her out.
"Come on." He said, as they all left the room, leaving Salem to her own thoughts as the doors shut.
There was a brief moment of tense silence before Salem's cry rang out, and the sound of shattering glass echoed through the doors.
~Jinn's Story~
"Locked away by her cruel father, Salem was a girl who desired but one thing, freedom." Jinn explained as the scene changed to the younger, blonde haired Salem looking out the tower window. "She lived in a time when Kings in their Kingdoms were plentiful, when men and women were capable of greatness, and magic, was a gift from the Gods that all could wield. Yet there she sat within her tower."
The scene changed from within the tower, to outside the castle, where a young man in armor came into view.
"Until one day, a legendary hero came to brave the challenges within the towers walls. The people of the lands, knew him, as Ozma." Jinn said. "Unlike those who had come before, this warrior was not drive by the prize of the young Maiden's hand. He fought only for righteousness, and his pure heart, and courageous soul prevailed."
The scene changed again, to various battles Ozma had, fighting for Salem's freedom, eventually reaching the top of the tower.
"They escaped the retched fortress, and yet, something bound them together." Jinn continued on. "Ozma had been ready to give his life for justice, countless times. But now, saw a woman worth saving it for, and Salem, to her surprise, found her freedom not in the outside world she had yearned for, but in the eyes of the man that had saved her."
"So, where shall we go now?" Salem questioned.
"Wherever you'd like." Ozma said, sounding like an older version of Oscar.
"The two fell deeply in love. Planned adventures around the world, and lived happily ever after." Jinn said, as the scene changed, to a bedridden Ozma with Salem at his side. "Or at least, that's what should have been." Scythe looked at the scene, and his heart ached seeing such sadness. "Ozma, the infallible legend, fell ill. An' where all of the beasts and the blades had fallen short, a single sickness prevailed."
The sight of someone who was supposed to be a heartless witch, crying her eyes out over an empty bed, and a staff that belonged to her beloved, broke Scythe's heart.
"How could the Gods let this happen?" Salem questioned.
"The Gods." Jinn continued. "Brothers of light and darkness, creation and destruction. Salem prayed they would see the injustice that had befallen her love, and make things right."
The scene changed from the bedroom to a mountain pass of stairs, with offerings of flowers and confections littering the steps.
"The domain of light was a sacred place." Jinn said as Salem put flowers on the steps. "It was here, the elder brother dwelled beside his fountain of life and creation. It was here, where mankind, would fall to ruin." She explained as the scene changed to the top of the mountain, with a view of the fountain.
Golden petals from the tree began to fall as the wind blew them through the air, and circulated around a single area in the fountain, before a light began to shine, and a being faceless, and made of pure golden light, came out of the water, as Salem stepped closer to the fountain.
"Please." Salem pleaded falling to her knees. "Please bring him back to me."
"I understand your pain, but you demand of me, that which I cannot make so." The God of Light said. "Life and death, are part of a delicate balance."
"So… you won't do it then?" Salem asked.
"To disrupt the cycle of…"
"But that's not fair." Salem interrupted. "That's not fair." Her voice echoed through the mountain walls around them.
"Let him rest." The God of Light said sternly.
The scene began to change as Salem was sent back to the base of the mountain in a storm of golden petals.
"No." Salem said.
"The God of Darkness." Jinn said as the scene changed to the murky and desolate mountain pass that was the domain of the God of Darkness, as proven by the skeleton that laid bare by the steps with a sword in its ribs. "None dared to enter his home, as men knew what emerged from his blackened pools of annihilation. An' so you must understand the Dark Lord's surprise, when he found a lone woman kneeling before him."
From the dark depths of his pool, the God of Destruction emerged, and came to Salem, in the creepiest way possible, walking with his arms and legs facing the wrong way, as he crab walked to her.
"Salem understood it well." Jinn explained. "She told him of her loss, and professed that she knew, only he could answer her prayers. All while careful to make no mention of his elder."
"Rise child, and let your faith in me, be rewarded." The God of Destruction said.
As Salem rose to her feet, the younger brother brought Ozma back to life. As the resurrected man fell to the ground, Salem raced to his side, and cradled his head in her hands, before he gasped as life was brought anew within his body.
"Where am I?" Ozma questioned. "What is this, where am I?"
"It's okay, everything's going to be okay." Salem said.
There was a thunderous roar in the air, as the elder brother, appeared before them, and he looked none too pleased with what his younger brother had done.
"What have you done?" The God of Creation asked.
"I have done what I please, brother." The younger brother said. "You may bask in the powers of creation, but you do not own them."
"This, is not creation."
"Do not lecture me."
"I will do what I must, to maintain order." The elder brother said, raising his hand, before ending Ozma's life.
"No. No, what did you do?" Salem questioned. "Bring him back."
"You dare enter my domain and show such disrespect." The younger brother said, his anger rising before he brought Ozma back.
"Ozma." Salem cried out.
"I am abiding by the rules, WE, agreed upon. Need I remind you, who should come if the balance of nature is tipped in either direction?" The elder brother questioned.
"Let the Celestial Knights come and try to slay us if they dare. The rules I now see, are ever in your favor, brother." The younger brother exclaimed as he began to change. "An' yet the day a mortal comes to pray at my feet before your own, so do you arrive to lay your judgement upon me." The younger declared as he turned into a mighty dragon letting out an earth trembling roar as the Grimm charged at the elder brother.
The Grimm were only to fail as the Elder creates an explosive burst of power in the form of silver light that destroyed them, and all the Grimm in the surrounding area, as the Elder turned into a fierce Eastern Dragon.
"I know we have our differences, but I have not come here with aim to control you." The Elder said. "The same, however, cannot be said for her. This woman came to you, only after I denied her pleas, pleas that would have disrupted the balance that you and I created, together, that are guarded and maintained by the Celestial Knights."
"Then it seems, I owe you an apology brother." The Younger said. "Allow me, to correct my mistake." He exclaimed as he prepared what Scythe recognized as a breath attack.
"No." Salem shouted as she shielded Ozma, just before the attack of purple flames struck, and returned Ozma to the afterlife in a cloud of black dust, while leaving Salem unscathed. "You, you monsters." She cried. "Give him back to me, give him back." She demanded as she charged up her magic for an attack.
The Elder roared as he flew at Salem and let out his own breath attack that struck her, but instead of being dead, Salem found herself falling through the skies, before she landed in the pool of creation, choking on the water before she found herself sitting on its surface, coughing up the water in her lungs.
"When you first came to me. I did pity you." The elder said. Salem looked up at the brothers, both reverted from their draconic forms, and standing across from where she laid. "But it is clear now that your selfishness and arrogance have led you astray."
"What did you do to me?" Salem questioned.
"I have made you immortal." The Elder exclaimed.
"Immortal?" She questioned.
"You cannot die." The younger said simply. "You cannot be, with your beloved."
"So long as this world turns, you shall walk its face." The duo of brothers said in unison.
"You must learn the importance, of life and death." The Elder exclaimed. "Only then, may you rest."
Salem ran to the brothers to try and get them to undo the immortality, but suddenly found herself standing in a grassland, close to the home she had built with Ozma.
"Salem was a prisoner once again." Jinn exclaimed. "Her fruitless attempts to reunite with Ozma, eventually became nothing more than acts of spite and defiance against the Gods." She explained as the silhouette of Salem was seen, as she skewered herself straight through. "But perhaps the Gods, were not as powerful as they seemed. She had lied to them, turned them against one another. They were fallible. If she were to turn humanity against light and darkness, she could rid herself of their curse. Or at the very least, she could make them suffer."
Scythe didn't even flinch as the illusion of Salem threw her sword, directly at him before the scene of the story changed from Salem's house, to the inside of a castle.
"Salem travelled from one kingdom to another, telling tales of how she stole immortality from the Gods, welcomed any swordsman to cut her down, and demonstrated her powers." Jinn explained as the scene began to shift between different castle Great Halls. "With the Kings and Queens in awe, she pulled them deeper into her scheme. She painted them pictures of a time when they would no longer have to watch their loved ones wither and die, when they could claim the powers of their creators, for themselves, and in turn perfect their own design." The scene changed from the final court room to the stairs to the domain of light. "All they needed to do was destroy their old masters."
The soldiers of the armies charge forward, and Elder, sprouted from his pool, in his true form.
"The Gods had hoped Salem would learn from her eternal curse, and she did." Jinn said as the Younger came down beside his brother, giving out a vicious roar. "She learned that the hearts of men, are easily swayed."
"Who has led you down this path?" The Elder questioned.
From out of the crowd, Salem stepped forward and showed her hand in the betrayal the humans had done against their creators.
"You." The Younger said in disgust.
Launching the first of the attacks, Salem signaled for the others to launch their attacks at the brothers. But their spells were meaningless, when all the magic was gathered into the palm of the Younger's hand.
"My own gift, to them, used against me." The Younger exclaimed, clutching the ball of magic energy in his claw.
Crushing down on the magic energy, the Younger let loose a ferocious burst of energy, and the scene changed from location to location as the vail of energy engulfed the whole of Remnant, before the scene was back to the pool of life. The only one to survive that experience, being Salem as her immortality kept her from dying.
"No." Salem said, picking herself up. "No."
Salem was thrown back by a gust of wind pressure as the Younger stomped in front of her, knocking Salem away.
"You thought there was no greater punishment we could bestow upon you?" The Younger asked.
"I'll come back, I'll tell the rest of the world of this Massacre, build a new army." Salem said.
"You do not understand." The Younger said with an amused tone in his voice. "There is no one left. You are all that remains of humanity."
"Unfortunately, the younger brothers actions, drew the attention of one, who they did not wish to anger, even in the slightest." Jinn explained.
"What is going on here?"
The Deity Brothers and Salem looked back to the stairs to see who was there.
At the base of the steps stood a tall man, with most of his body, minus his pectorals and dentelé, covered in silver fur. He possessed a shadow trim around his eyes and over the eyelids that were a light violet color. His hair long and wild, reaching down to the middle of his back, with two long pointed bangs of hair on both sides of the neck. His clothes consisted of a black vest, hammer pants with a sash tied around the waist, and kung fu slippers, with the bangs over his face being a scarlet red with the rest, being as silver as the fur on his body. When he walked past Scythe, he saw on the back of his vest the same spider skull that he had on his uniform, but most surprising, was the silver furred monkey tail hanging from a hole in the back of the pants.
"I'll ask once more, what is going on here?" He questioned, Scythe recognizing the voice.
"C-Cerenos sir." The Elder said, looking at the newcomer. "I apologize, a Celestial Knight, such as yourself, shouldn't have to deal with these matters."
"It's my job to deal with them. Now speak, I'd already sensed one disturbance decades ago on this world that had no effect on the timeline whatsoever, and now I sense that only one soul on this entire planet remains, what is going on here?" Cerenos questioned.
"That's Cerenos?" Scythe questioned, before he looked up and saw what looked like Cerenos looking directly at him before turning back to the deity brothers. "Even as an illusion, I can feel his energy, it's divine, Godlike even. But, he couldn't have been looking at me, could he? There's no way, even Celestial Knights have their limits."
"You see, this human girl had tricked us into arguing with one another, and had even turned us against each other to where we nearly fought to the death." The Younger said. "All to bring her beloved back to her, so we cursed her with immortality, never to be with him until she learned the value of life and death."
"Then today, she brings to us, an army of humans, hoping that this act of retaliation would be enough to get us to break the curse on her." The Elder explained. "But it failed, and my brother has wiped the planet of its population, leaving only this one woman here to remain."
"Alright so what I'm getting is, your punishment on her wasn't enough, but now you had to go and make her the last living thing on this planet?" Cerenos questioned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "See this is why I gave up my title as a Destroyer God, and formed the Celestial Knights, to try and stop boneheads like you, from doing crazy shit like this."
"I-I'm sorry." The Younger said.
"Oh you're gonna be sorry alright. The universe if off balance now, and I have to restore it back to what it was. On top of all this, it's my little Princess's Birthday, and I'm forced to work instead of making this her special day." Cerenos exclaimed. "My little girl is everything to me, and I will not let you ruin this day for her. So here's what's gonna happen, I'm gonna return to my little girl's birthday party, and after that we're gonna have a little chat, just the three of us." Cerenos said, before he disappeared in a flash of Celestial Teleportation.
With Cerenos gone, the Gods of Creation and Destruction returned to the task at hand, as they were still focused on Salem.
"This planet was a beautiful experiment, but it is merely a remnant of what it once was." The Elder said. "We will learn from this failure. I hope that you will learn from yours." He exclaimed before he began to glow brighter, and dissolved into a storm of golden petals.
"No, you can't leave. You can't leave." Salem tried to call out to him as she ran at him. "Come back."
"Still demanding things of your creators." The Younger said before taking off, flying through the air, into the endless space above, shattering a portion of the moon, and causing a meteor shower to rain down on the earth.
A large chunk of the moon fell from the skies, and destroyed the pool of creation, with Salem getting caught in the blast as she fell to her knees, and cried out in anguish.
"Once again, Salem was alone." Jinn exclaimed as the scene changed to Salem wondering around aimlessly. "She cursed the Gods. She cursed the universe. She cursed everything, everything but herself. She wondered the face of the planet, awaiting a death that would never come." She continued as the scene changed to a cliff right above the pool of destruction that had belonged to the Younger Brother. "Until fate led her back to the Land of Darkness. This was it. This had to be it, the Brothers Grimm, the pools of black that continued to give rise to horrific nightmares. If the fountain of life granted her immortality, then surely the pools of Grimm would finally take it away." She stated, as Salem, went free falling into the pool of Grimm. "She was wrong."
The image of Salem struggling in the pool of Grimm was heart wrenching to Scythe, seeing her struggle for life, was something he wished not to see anyone go through.
"This force of pure destruction, could not destroy a being of infinite life. Instead, it created a being of infinite life, with a desire for pure destruction. An' in time, she would find her adversary." Jinn said.
The scene changed from the inky blackness, to a pure white, unstable place between life and death, showing Ozma as he opened his eyes and began wondering where he was.
"Ozma." The Elder said.
Ozma turned around to face the Elder Brother, as he went from his true form to his human one.
"Where, am I?" Ozma questioned.
"We are, between realms." The Elder said. "I'm afraid a tragedy, has befallen your home, at the hands of my brother. We have chosen to depart this world, but in our absence, I would like to offer you the chance to return to it."
"I… don't understand."
"Mankind is no more, yet your world remains." The Elder said. "An' in time, your kind will grow to walk its face once again."
"Thanks to Cerenos." Scythe said, watching their encounter.
"However, without our presence, they will be but a fraction of what they once were." The Elder said. "Creation, destruction, choice, and knowledge, were the ideals upon which humanity was made. Now, I leave them behind, with the hope that you, will learn to remake yourselves."
"So this is how the Relics came to be." Scythe pondered.
"If brought together, these four Relics will summon my brother and I back to your world, and humanity will be judged." The Elder said. "If your kind has learned to live in harmony with one another and set aside their differences, then we shall once again, live among you, and humanity will be made whole again. But if your kind is unchanged, if you demand our blessings while still fighting amongst yourselves, then man will be found, irredeemable, and your world, will be wiped from existence. Until your task is complete, you will reincarnate, but in a manner that ensures you are never alone."
"I'm sorry but, that world just isn't as dear to me without her." Ozma said. "If I may, I'd rather return to the afterlife to see Salem."
"You will not find her there." The Elder said.
"You mean, she isn't gone?" Ozma inquired.
"Salem lives, but the woman you hold dear in your memories is gone." The Elder exclaimed. "Heed this warning. Where you seek comfort, you will only find pain. So, will you…"
"I'll do it." Ozma said.
"Very well." The Elder said. "Our creation, rests within your hands. But I must warn you of one thing." The Elder exclaimed as a silver coin appeared in his hands, it was the Celestial Knight badge. "Keep the balance of the world stable, for there are beings, far stronger than my brother and I, who will destroy the planet in order to keep the balance of the cosmos in check. These beings, are known as Celestial Knights, and they are the guardians of the Universe. You can recognize them by their badges, these coins, or by the marks on which they have." He said, showing Ozma an image of the spider skull. "Should they ever come, treat them, like you would treat me, or my brother, with respect."
"An' so, Ozma was reborn." Jinn said. The scene changed to Ozma's point of view, as his vessel just killed a Beowolf, before he looked up and around, spotting the burning buildings and structures in front of him.
"Where am I?" His voice echoed in his host's head before he turned and saw a man with a sword, fending himself poorly, against a Beowolf.
"Help." The man cried.
Taking control, Ozma went running towards the man, before he grabbed the sword, and slashed at the Beowolf twice, finishing it off by skewering the Grimm through the chest with the blade.
"Thank you." The man said, turning Ozma around. "Please, tell me your name. Who are you?"
"He didn't know." Oscar said.
"Ozma had found himself in a world, completely unfamiliar to him." Jinn said as the scene changed to the streets of a town with people, and Faunus in cages, littering the streets. "Cities looked different, creatures known as the Faunus bore fangs and claws, and were locked away in cages, and without the blessing of the Gods, no one could perform magic like mankind was once capable of. No one but himself, and a woman known as, the Witch." The scene changed from the streets, to a forest path leading to a house, Ozma once knew as home, as it looked like it had seen better days. "During his years of travel, he'd heard the same frightened whispers that spoke of a terrifying Sorceress who commanded dark powers in the wilds, among the beasts and monsters. Ozma was convinced that this Witch, was Salem, and decided he needed to see, what she had become."
The door to the house opened, and Ozma was shocked to see the bone white skin and hair, of the woman he had once come to call his beloved, as she stepped out of the rickety old house, to face whoever was trespassing on her property.
Her expression softened however, when she saw the man standing there, and recognized the aura that he gave off.
"Call it magic, or call it something stronger, but in that moment, the two knew exactly who it was that stood before them." Jinn said as Ozma and Salem clasp hands.
"What do we do now?" Ozma questioned.
"Whatever we like." Salem exclaimed.
"As Salem and Ozma recounted the events which had brought them back together, each withheld parts of their story." The scene changed from an old house on its last legs, to a beautiful building with lavish lawn scape and furnishings of quality design. "Salem, fearing Ozma would reject her, blamed the end of the world on the Gods. Ozma, still unsure of where the truth lay, kept his task and the Relics a secret."
"This doesn't seem like it's going to end well." Scythe said.
"Though time passed, and all seemed well, Ozma's conversation with the God of Light, still lingered in his mind. He had found happiness, but humankind seemed more divided than ever before." Jinn explained.
"Are you surprised?" Salem asked. "This world is quite literally Godless. These humans have no one to guide them. Perhaps that's all they need."
"What are you saying?" Ozma asked putting his cup of tea down.
"We could become the Gods of this world. Our powers surpass all others. Our souls transcend death. We can mold these lands into whatever we want, what you want. Create the paradise that the old Gods could not. Answer to no one, like they had." Salem said, putting a hand on Ozma's shoulder.
"The hearts of men… are easily swayed." Jinn exclaimed.
"So she manipulated him, like she manipulated those kings and queens. Fucking simp." Scythe cursed.
The scene changed to one of chaos as Nevermores descended from the skies to the earth, swooping down to grab humans to devour. But as the biggest Nevermore circled back, it was grabbed in a dark aura, before it was crushed into nothing, vanishing into dust as its bones were destroyed and the creature of darkness was killed.
The next thing to come, were Salem and Ozma, floating in the air, hands clasped together, and their power radiating all over their bodies, as the people began to bow and worship them.
"The two amassed a following. That following grew into a prosperous Kingdom, and at the head of that Kingdom, blossomed… a family." Jinn said as the scenery changed from the town, to a castle, to a portrait in the castle, which changed from just Salem and Ozma, to them and their four daughters, with both parents looking absolutely blissful at their new family life, and their children.
The scene changed again, to Ozma and Salem looking into a Seer, and witnessing a war being raged in their names.
"Are we sure this is right?" Ozma questioned.
"You said we needed to bring humanity together." Salem said. "In order to do that, we have to spread our word, and destroy those who will deny it."
Ozma sighed and looked out the mirror, clasping his hands behind his back, but saw something he wasn't expecting, as his reflection moved on its own.
"What are we doing?" His Vessel's owner asked, making him realize something he should have done from the beginning.
"This isn't what he asked of me." Ozma exclaimed, surprising Salem.
"What did you say?" Salem asked, before the doors opened, and in came their oldest daughter.
"Mother, father, look." She cheered as she began to do magic.
Salem forgot about what Ozma had said, and was overjoyed to see her daughter performing magic like that, as it was eons since they'd seen anyone else capable of such ability, as Salem looked proud at her daughter.
"It was a miracle. Their children could perform magic. But what should have been a joyous occasion, was short lived." Jin said, as the scene changed to a late night in their study. "Ozma told Salem everything, the true reason why the God of Light had brought him back, the Relics scattered around the world, and the day of judgement, he had been told to prepare for."
"Don't you see?" Salem began. "None of that matters anymore. Why spend our lives trying to redeem these humans, when we could replace them, with what they could never be."
The scene changed to one late night, sometime later, as Ozma was trying to sneak his daughters out of the castle, trying to give them a better life than one filled with war and suffering that Salem had planned, but his own plans for escape, had failed when he heard his youngest daughter utter one word.
"Mommy?"
Ozma looked to where his child was looking, and saw Salem standing there, a look of hurt and betrayal on her face as she now saw the man she loved, as a man to loath. A battle began between the two, with the four daughters of the King of Light, and the Dark Queen, getting caught in the middle of it. Losing their lives to the destruction their parents rout, as the castle fell to ruins. Scythe's hand was clenched tightly, to the point that he was drawing blood with his finger nails digging into the palm of his hand.
Ozma could be seen crawling along the ground, blood trailing behind him, as Salem's body reformed from the attack Ozma used to turn her to ashes, and she marched up to the injured man, stomping her foot on his chest.
"We finally, had freedom." She said.
"I…" Was all Ozma managed to say, before Salem burnt his body to ash.
"Thus began a long and painful cycle of death and rebirth for Ozma." Jinn said, as the lives Ozma lived, were quickly shown, a brief glance of what he did in them. "Some lives were spent in mourning. Many were spent attempting to forget it all. But no matter what, his mind would eventually turn back to the task he had been burdened with. As the centuries went on, Ozma began to learn the importance of living with the soul, which he had been paired. But no matter where or how he lived, her presence was always felt."
"So now we're getting to when he takes his task seriously." Scythe said.
"Is humanity were ever to stand a chance of being united, one thing was clear…"
"Salem must be destroyed."
"Knowing he could never rid the world of her through any mortal means, Ozma sought out the power of the Relics." Jinn explained. "Armed with my knowledge, he believed he could fulfill his promise to the God of Light."
The scene changed to a white canvas of a background as Ozma and Jinn became visible, with all of Team RWBY and Scythe, trailing behind him.
"Where are the other Relics?" Ozma questioned.
"He asked me his questions."
"What powers do they possess?"
"An' though I gave him my answers…"
"How do I destroy Salem?"
"Not all of them were to his liking." Jinn explained.
"You can't." The illusion Jinn answered.
An' that was the end of the tale, as Ozpin, in Oscar's body, knelt in the snow, in front of Team RWBY and the Celestial Knight, with the five of them, standing around Ozpin.
"Salem can't be killed." Yang said. "You all heard her too right?"
"I…" Was all Ozpin could say, before he was interrupted.
"There was so much, you hadn't told us." Yang said, interrupting him. "How could you think that was okay?"
"Professor?" Ruby asked, gaining his attention. "What is your plan to defeat Salem?"
"I… don't have one." Ozpin said.
"At least now we know how the Maidens actually came to be." Scythe said, just before he stopped Qrow from punching Ozpin.
"Let go of me, let me at him." Qrow said.
"Calm down Qrow. You might be wanting to punch Ozpin, but that's Oscar's body you'll be hurting." Scythe said. "Just calm down."
Qrow stopped struggling in Scythe's grip and took a deep calming breath, before Scythe let him go, and he turned away from Ozpin.
"No one wanted me." Qrow said. "I was cursed. I gave my life to you, because you gave me a place in this world. I thought I was finally doing some good."
"But, you are." Ozpin said.
"Meeting you, was the worst luck of my life." Qrow exclaimed.
There was a calm moment of silence as Ozpin let those words sink in, as they hit him like a ton of bricks.
"Maybe you're right." Ozpin said, before he retreated into the back of Oscar's mind, giving full control back Oscar.
"What happened?" Ruby asked.
"He's, gone." Oscar said.
"That bastard. Tell him we're not done yet." Yang declared marching up to him.
"No. This is different." Oscar said. "He's gone. It's like he's locked himself, deep inside my head. Our head? I hate this, I want it to stop."
"He just left us?" Weiss asked.
"What are we gonna do now?" Blake questioned.
"Enough." Maria shouted, gaining their attention. "We need to get a move on. It'll be dark before we know it, and the only one of you not spewing negativity like a fountain is the one armed swordsman."
"There's a trail over this way. It could lead to someplace we can camp for the night before taking off in the morning." Scythe said.
"Trails usually lead somewhere." Maria added.
"Lady, I don't know who you think you are but…"
"No buts." Maria said, stomping her cane into the snow. "I understand that you're upset. Honestly, I'm still coming to terms with the fact that this is humanity's second time around. But if we don't move, we die, and I'll be damned if I've lived this long just to die out here in the cold."
"She's right." Ruby said. "They're both right. Come on."
Gathering up as many supplies as they could, the gang all gathered what they needed and began making their way to the trail, while Scythe lagged behind near the back of the group with Maria looking at him calculatingly, as he was examining a shard of burn Dust.
"You there young man." Maria said.
"Hmm?"
"Tell me, you're brandishing the same emblem as that Cerenos guy in the story."
"That's right, I'm a member of the Archlich Core of the Celestial Knights. My wife brandishes the same emblem since we Celestial Knight's work in pairs." Scythe exclaimed.
"I see." Maria said. "What happened to your arm?"
"It's nothing. A couple hours ago, the tunnel entrance and the train tore it off at the elbow, but it is growing back, see?" Scythe said, pulling what remained of his sleeve back, showing the baby looking hand sprouting from the nub. "Should be back to full size by this evening or so."
"Oh my, if I'm being honest, that is most disturbing." Maria said. "So why are you so interested in that Dust?"
"That might be its name, but where I'm from these stones are called something entirely different." Scythe said. "We call them Lacrima, in my world."
"Lacrima?" Weiss asked.
"Magic filled stones, usually with a limited amount of use unless you can recharge them." Scythe said. "Or on the rarest of occasions, find those with an unlimited supply of magic in them."
"You've got to be kidding me." Blake said.
"Not at all." Scythe exclaimed. "Take a look up there, you see the moon?"
"Yeah, it's shattered, what about it?" Blake questioned as Scythe held the shard up towards the view of the shattered moon.
"This shard, used to be a piece of the moon, but was split off from the main vein of power when mined from the source of the chunk of moon, that fell to the terra below our feet." Scythe said. "Remember the younger brother shattered the moon when he left, and hundreds, if not thousands, of meteors came crashing down to Remnant. I'm thinking his magic must have been absorbed by the moon when he shattered it, and the fragments came falling to the terra, becoming what you've come to know, as Dust."
"That actually makes sense." Weiss said.
"I'm not all brawn you know. I've got my fair share of brains." Scythe smiled.
~A Couple Hours Later~
"Doesn't look like this is gonna let up." Qrow sighed.
"I just wanna get this stupid Relic to Atlas." Blake groaned.
"Let's hope we don't have to walk all the way there." Weiss said.
"I thought trails led somewhere?" Yang sassed to Maria.
"Do you have nothing better to do, than to harass a defenseless old lady?" Maria questioned, using Yang's own words against her.
"Quiet." Scythe said, hearing something. "Does anyone else hear that?" He questioned, before they all went quiet and a metallic squeaking was heard echoing through the air.
They continued onward for quite a while, before they reached the source of the squeaking, and found it to be the entrance gate to a farming town. The sign read, Brunswick Farms.
"Well, at least one good thing happened today." Blake said.
"It looks abandoned." Weiss said.
Scythe had a bad feeling about this place, and he couldn't put his finger on it, but the aura of it felt, all too familiar to him, like he'd been somewhere similar before. Sticking his thumb and index finger in his mouth, Scythe let out a big loud whistle, and from out of the shadows, came the Forty Thieves.
"You summoned us, my Prince?" The leader of the group questioned.
"I did." Scythe said. "I want you to search through this town, and if you see anything that shouldn't be, come and report to me immediately."
"As you command."
With that, the Forty Thieves vanished, leaving the others to looks at Scythe with astonishment.
"What?" He asked.
"You're a Prince?" Yang asked.
"Of sorts." Scythe said. "Let's just say… Salem's daughters, weren't the only ones born to an evil genocidal ruler of darkness."
"My liege." One of the thieves said, returning to him. "We've scoured the town, and found every bedroom, filled with corpses. There are even several in the well systems below."
"That's why this place feels familiar." Scythe said.
"How so?" Qrow asked.
"The village I was born in, Metalica, was a ghost town, with bodies everywhere." Scythe said, before turning his attention back to the thief. "Find all the bodies, big and small, and give them proper burials, with marked graves. Take anything of value that might help aid us on our journey."
"As you command." The thief said before vanishing again.
"Dude, you're gonna loot a ghost town?" Yang questioned.
"Hey, if I don't give an order like that to these guys every once in a while, then I'm basically gonna have a coup de'ta on my hands when they don't fulfil their base desire for thieving. It's better than leaving someone alive with nothing." Scythe exclaimed before leading them through the town to the biggest house, right down the road. Knocking on the door, one of the thieves opened it and let them all in.
"Welcome." He said creepily before vanishing into the shadows.
"We'll stay here for the night." Scythe said, pushing the door open, and sending a ball of fire to ignite the fireplace. "Since we're out of the cold, and into someplace warm for the night, it shouldn't take as long for my arm to grow back."
"Good evening my prince." Virgo said, appearing out of nowhere.
"Gah, Virgo do not scare me like that." Scythe exclaimed. "You almost gave me a heart attack."
"Oh my, are you gonna punish me for it sir?" Virgo asked.
"Knowing you, you'd enjoy it too much." Scythe said, with a deadpan expression. "Look, just find where the liquor is, and mix me and Qrow a couple of pink watermelon lemonade slushies, okay? It's been a really long day and we both look like we could use a couple drinks in us to lift our spirits."
"Right away sir. Before I go however, I would like to inform you that I have cleaned this house top to bottom and prepared the appropriate amount of futons in the living room and have prepared a nice hot meal for you all to enjoy. The food for both of you, will be served with your drinks." Virgo said.
"Alright, thanks. Now after you've mixed our drink go water-board yourself for a couple hours." Scythe sighed.
"Of course sir." Virgo said, smiling with stars in her eyes as she disappeared.
"That girl is just too much sometimes." Scythe sighed.
"Why'd you order her to go torture herself?" Yang questioned.
"Trust me, it's best you don't know the details. Let's just say, it's more of a treat for her, than a punishment." Scythe said.
"There's no way she cleaned this house within ten seconds of us stepping foot in here." Weiss exclaimed.
"She has actually." Scythe said. "Virgo is a Celestial Spirit. A being formed from an alignment of stars, known as a constellation, created by the Celestial Spirit King. An' let me tell ya, Virgo is the best at cleaning and following orders. If your basement is full to the brim with junk, she can get rid of it in less than five seconds. It's all thanks to her magic."
"Well, the food she made smells absolutely delicious." Blake said leading the others into the living room.
"Virgo is a pretty great chef, but nothing beats my mom's cooking." Scythe smiled.
"Your drinks are ready sir." Virgo said. "I made yours with some especially enchanted ingredients so you wouldn't miss out on feeling a buzz."
"Thanks Virgo." Scythe chuckled as Virgo led them to the in house bar.
"I made several for each of you, as it seems like it's been that kind of day." Virgo said.
"Sugar, you have no idea." Qrow exclaimed, before turning around and walking off.
"Where are you going?" Scythe asked.
"To do a sweep of the grounds for any supplies we could use, preferably a car or a flatbed truck." Qrow exclaimed.
"You know I could have the Forty Thieves do that." Scythe said.
"I need to clear my head." Qrow exclaimed.
"Suit yourself." Scythe said, before taking a seat at the bar before Blake popped her head in.
"Yang and I are gonna go check the storage units for and vehicles." She exclaimed.
"Don't freeze to death out there." Scythe said, before Blake left. "Anything to report Virgo?"
"The cellar door in the next room is chained up, as if to keep something from getting in." Virgo said.
"I see. I'll check it out after I eat." Scythe exclaimed.
"Scythe."
The Celestial Knight turned to see Weiss and Ruby, having brought their food in to sit with him.
"Is it alright if we sit with you? Weiss wants talk to you about something." Ruby said.
"Of course, pull up a seat." Scythe said. "What's up?"
"Are we really still going to Atlas?" Weiss inquired.
"Definitely." Scythe said drinking from his watermelon alcoholic slushy. "Why do you ask?"
"Well, you heard what Jinn said. If there's no way to kill them, then what's the point of all this?" Weiss asked.
"There is a way to kill Salem. Several actually, one of them happens to be my own specially made method, proven to be 100% effective." Scythe exclaimed.
"Really? How can you know for sure?" Ruby asked.
"Remember that Beo guy I mentioned?" Scythe inquired. "Velhallen Beo, was an immortal, just like Salem. Now granted, he didn't get his immortality through the same means, but he was still just as unkillable as Salem is."
"So how did you kill him then?" Weiss asked.
"I told you I have magic, but I never told you what kind I have." Scythe exclaimed.
"What is your magic?" Ruby asked.
"I have magic, capable of slaying the Gods." Scythe said. "Now, Gods are immortal, and Beo managed to become immortal by reaching that level of power, through determination and dark means. He became a God of Destruction, just like the younger brother of the two deity siblings."
"An' you were able to kill him with your magic?" Weiss questioned.
"I was." Scythe said, igniting a black flame in his palm. "Because I wield Godslayer Magic. Slayer Magic of the holiest origin."
"That's amazing." Ruby said, in awe of the black flame in his hand.
"Ah-ah, you mustn't touch." Scythe said, dousing the flame before Ruby could touch it. "If you do, it'll make a scar on your body that will never heal."
"Oh, it was so pretty though." Ruby said.
"Anyways. My Godslayer Magic is able to negate immortality, and I'm positive it could do the same for Salem's." Scythe said. "Salem wants to destroy the world by summoning the Brothers Grimm, for one reason, and one reason only."
"An' that would be?"
"She wants to die." Scythe said. "It wasn't that hard to figure out after seeing the story behind how Salem came to be, and everything Ozpin was hiding from us. She wants to die, because she has nothing left to live for. The man she loved broke her heart and betrayed her, her daughters died but their magic lives on, reincarnating into new maidens. She wants the Relic's because she thinks they're the only way to ending her life."
"That actually makes sound sense." Weiss exclaimed. "But, how do you know the Maiden Magic reincarnates?"
"The four daughters of Salem and Ozma, wield magic, Ozma has the ability to reincarnate into a new host every time he dies. Obviously, the daughters inherited more from him, than they did from Salem." Scythe exclaimed. "Inheriting part of Ozma's reincarnation ability is how a new Maiden is chosen every time the previous one dies."
"I never would have pieced that together." Ruby said.
"Now, enough chit chat, let's dig in." Scythe smiled.
~That Night~
Ruby sat on the stairs, watching the shattered moon through the window, thinking back on the part of Jinn's story that showed how the moon got shattered in the first place. Looking into the living room, Ruby saw Oscar pacing, while Yang, Weiss, and Blake sat in front of the fire, with Maria sitting on the comforter reading one of the journals she pulled from the book shelf, while Qrow and Scythe were nowhere to be seen in there.
Getting up, Ruby walked to where her uncle actually was, with a bottle of alcohol on the ground next to him, as he sat on a chair, and was looking out the window to keep watch for the first shift.
"Storm's cleared up for now." Qrow said. "We should be able to leave by morning."
"That's good." Ruby said. "Where's Scythe?"
"He went out, said something about getting some late night training in before sleeping." Qrow exclaimed. "He's probably concerned about Wendy."
"Signs of a good husband." Ruby smiled.
"It'd be best we leave at morning, I don't have a good feeling about this place." Qrow said as Ruby's gaze shifted to the bottle on the floor. "Especially with me around."
"Are you, okay?" Ruby asked.
"Heh, sure." Qrow said sarcastically. "Tell everyone to get some sleep. I'll wake you guys up before sunrise."
With that, Ruby turned to leave, but stopped when she heard the sound of liquid in a glass bottle sloshing around, as Qrow began to chug the contents.
In the living room, the fire was roaring with a great heat as Maria started up a conversation with Oscar.
"It's a diary?" Oscar questioned.
"The head of this household, Bartleby." Maria said. "Apparently, he and several other families founded this little settlement to try and live on their own. It sounds like it worked." She exclaimed, gesturing to the other two diaries on the side table at the end of the couch, she'd read through. "At least, for a spell."
"Grimm?" Oscar questioned.
"Just, one of many hardships." Maria said. "Slowed down their farming, made everything harder. It's a shame really, he seemed like quite the ambitious fellow. Always thinking of new schemes to overcome the odds."
"Hey guys." Ruby said coming into the room. "Qrow said we should get some sleep. We're gonna head out early tomorrow."
"Thank goodness." Blake said before the three of them got up and went to the couch, as Oscar opened a chest full of blankets and pillows, and pulled some out.
"Huh, the last thing you'll catch me doing, is letting some kid, tell me what to do." Maria said, hopping down from the couch. "Go to bed." She mockingly scoffed before hopping on a chair in the corner, and turning on a light as she continued to read.
Ruby just shrugged as she smiled in amusement and went to the couch Maria had been on a moment ago.
~Outside~
"You're sure?" Scythe asked, flexing his arm as he had reattached the old one after cutting off the new one. "Are you positively sure about what you saw down in the well system?" He questioned the thief who brought him his arm back. "An' thanks for grabbing my arm for me."
"I am my Prince." The thief said. "A horde of lengthy skeletal Grimm had made their home down below."
"That's a problem." Scythe groaned, pulling an 8"-6" with a 3" girth, clasped shut blue leather bound notebook, and opened it, finding the Grimm he was looking for, on the third page, and showed the sketch of it to the thief in front of him. "Did it look like this?"
"That is it my Prince, that is the Grimm we saw in the water systems down below." The thief confirmed.
"I was afraid of that." Scythe said. "The Apathy. A Grimm known for draining one's will to strive and move forward in life."
"What shall we do?" The thief questioned.
"Have Hercules or Medusa bring my bike here. Have the upgrades to it been completed?" Scythe asked.
"Of course." The thief said.
"Good." Scythe said looking through the second half of the journal, looking through what he jotted down of what has to happen in the timeline in order for it to remain on track. "Unfortunately we can't do anything about the Apathy, less we risk shifting the timeline."
"So what shall we do next?" The thief inquired.
"Nothing. Return to the armory, and inform my grandfather, that one of Beo's Dark Knights, has made an appearance on Remnant." Scythe said.
"As you command." The thief said before disappearing.
~The Following Morning~
"Hey everyone, wake up." Scythe called as he came in through the door. "I was under the impression we'd be leaving before dawn. It's almost noon."
The sudden noise of Scythe's voice caused Ruby to wake up gasping in fear, before she looked around, seeing that everyone was still asleep, as Scythe came in and opened the curtains.
"Close the window." Weiss grumbled.
"Everybody up, now." Scythe said, stomping his foot, and shaking the entire house. "You over slept."
"An' what were you doing then?" Yang asked grumpily.
"I was busy hitching the flatbed you and Blake found, to my bike. Bumblebee won't be hauling that thing, I'll be driving. So everyone up." Scythe said, before walking over to Qrow and taking one of the empty booze bottles from the ground and shattering it against the wall, causing the bad luck charm, to jump awake.
"Ah, what?" Qrow questioned.
"You all overslept. C'mon, let's get a move on." Scythe said walking out as Ruby came into the room.
Ruby saw the distant, look in her uncle's eyes and went up to him, pulling the alcoholic in for a hug.
"You know, you can talk to me about stuff." Ruby said. "Yang to."
"Let's just get out of here." Qrow said patting her back.
After a while, everyone was outside, and the sight of the bike that was gonna pull the flatbed was enough to wake them up. The bike was sleek in design, and it looked like something that wasn't even put on the market yet. The tires were gone, or rather the tires were on their sides under their proper places, but weren't touching the ground, instead it was just floating in midair like it was defying gravity.
"Whoa, what kind of bike is that?" Yang questioned.
"The kind built with a combination of magic and mechanics and engineering." Scythe said. "Bumblebee is already hooked in, now all that's left is to have breakfast and…"
Wheeze…
Everyone looked to the tire and saw it flattening as air leaked out.
"You people are just beacons for bad luck, aren't you?" Maria questioned.
"You've gotta be kidding me." Scythe groaned. "Alright, a slight change of plans. Oscar, think you can fix the tire?"
"If I can find a repair kit and an electric air pump." Oscar said.
"There should be what you need in the shed." Scythe sighed as Yang went and sat against the well in front of the house.
"I'm starting to think the universe just doesn't want us getting to Atlas." Yang said.
"It's just a flat tire, I'm sure there's a spare if Oscar can't fix it." Ruby said.
"It's not just that." The blonde brawler exclaimed. "It's everything, storms, crashes, monsters, I'm so tired."
"Me to, it feels like we're always having to fight to get by." Blake said.
"Yeah, but that's what we signed up for." Ruby said.
"We signed up to try and save the world, not just… delay the inevitable." Oscar exclaimed.
"Did you forget who we have on our side? What we have on our side?" Ruby questioned, gesturing to Scythe. "This guy kills people like Salem on a daily basis."
"That doesn't matter Ruby. Last night I, I couldn't stop thinking. Why are we even going to Atlas?" Weiss questioned.
There was a tense moment of pause before Ruby chose to speak up.
"Weiss, we have to." Ruby said.
"Pipsqueak's right." Scythe exclaimed.
"Why?" Yang questioned, getting up. "Ozpin hid the Relics behind giant doors, under enormous schools. But… how long would it take Salem to find a lamp in the middle of nowhere?"
"But the Grimm might…"
"Find it eventually sure. But, burry it, or just throw it down the well, it would take years. It might not even happen in our lifetime." Yang said.
'Ruby has more of a resistance to the Apathy's grasp because of her silver eyed powers. That's a good thing, but having it and not knowing about it, is a bit of a disadvantage that evens things out.' Scythe thought.
"But we could be done with it, now." Yang said.
"Not happening Yang." Scythe said, keeping his hand on the Relic. "Look, you're not thinking clearly."
"My mind, is perfectly clear." Yang said. "Give me the Relic."
"No." Scythe said firmly. "The Relic stays with me."
"Scythe, we can be done with the Relic now, all we'd have to do, is throw it down the well." Yang said.
"Like is said Yang, that's not happening." Scythe said, before noticing the Relic was gone.
He looked down, just in time to see one of Weiss's Black Glyph's disappearing from his side, and looked in the direction it was facing, just before it landed in Yang's hands.
"What are you gonna do Scythe?" Yang questioned. "You're a Celestial Knight, you can't harm those who are important to the Timeline."
"Oh so suddenly you're an expert?" Scythe questioned. "What you're doing right now, is risking the timeline's very structure."
"Do you really think, the entire timeline's integrity would be destroyed by one, little thing going out of place?" Yang questioned, putting the Relic in Ruby's hands, and directing her towards the well.
"I am, really tired." Ruby said.
'Ruby's starting to be affected by the Apathy's power. This isn't good, but it has to happen, I just can't let them know this is how it must be without compromising the timeline.'
Ruby held the lamp over the well, and looked down it, before looking back at the Relic in her shaking hand.
"Ruby." Scythe said. "Don't drop it down the well. Do the right thing."
Ruby sighed, feeling conflicted on what to do, before she looked down the well again, and screamed seeing a pair of red eyes, and unintentionally dropping the lamp down there.
"No, no, no, no I didn't mean to." Ruby cried dropping to her knees, her elbows on the well's ledge.
"Ruby, it's okay." Weiss said.
"No, it's not okay. There's something down there, I saw it. It was looking at me." Ruby said in a panicked state, looking back down the well as Yang stepped up to her.
"Hey, it's okay." She said, putting a hand on Ruby's shoulder. "You just said you're tired, it was probably nothing. Now let's go."
"What's wrong with you?" Ruby questioned smacking Yang's hand away. "We can't just leave, we have to go down there; we have to get the lamps back."
"It's a maze down there." Scythe said walking up to the well. "I'll be back as soon as I can, we'll discuss punishment later." He exclaimed, before hopping over the edge and down the well.
Falling down to the watery bottom, Scythe landed with a splash, and just as he stepped forward, another splash echoed behind him, and he twisted around to see Ruby standing there with Crescent Rose at the ready in rifle form.
"What are you doing here?" Scythe questioned.
"It's my fault the lamp is down here, you're not gonna do this alone." Ruby exclaimed. "The others will be down in a sec, Uncle Qrow went to get a drink."
"He's gonna be disappointed." Scythe said. "Last night after he grabbed his third bottle, I had Virgo clear out all the alcohol in there."
"Huh, good to know." Ruby said, before the others dropped down into the well.
Scythe lit the way with flames in his hand, and held it up like a torch, as they went walking down through the different shafts of the well, searching for the Relic.
"Maybe the current carried it away." Yang suggested.
"No, a water level this low, wouldn't do so good against something as heavy as the Relic, especially with its unique design." Scythe exclaimed, kicking some of the rocks in the water. "Something's down here." He said, before they continued to walk forward.
"Oh come on where is it?" Ruby questioned.
"Turn off the light and just look for the glow?" Blake suggested.
"Okay. Be prepared, we don't know what's down here." Scythe said, before extinguishing the flames in his hand. 'Well I do, but they don't need to know that.'
Getting, Grimm Reaper ready, Scythe put the weapon in its Shikai form, and carefully waded through the waters with the team following him from behind, before they stopped as Blake spoke up.
"There." The Faunus said pointing to where she spotted the glowing of the lamp.
Ruby smiled back at her teammate and jogged over to where the lamp was, to grab it. Upon picking the lamp up, Ruby was unaware of what was in front of her until it was too late.
"Guys I…" Ruby stopped when she looked up, and her eyes landed on the Apathy.
When their attention landed on her, Ruby let out a scream of fear, giving Scythe reason to run to her rescue, and breaking the others out of their stoner like stupor, before they followed suit. When Scythe rounded the corner, he threw his dual blades at the Apathy, and like a boomerang, they went slicing through the Apathy before coming back to him. As he caught his weapon, Scythe grabbed Ruby by the shoulder and turned her to face him.
"Run." Is all he said, before he and Ruby made a break for it, passed the others, dragging them along.
"What are you doing?" Yang questioned.
"Those aren't just any Grimm, those are Apathy." Scythe said. "We need to leave now."
"Then let's just stand our ground, and fight." Weiss said, running with them.
"Not a good idea. The Apathy may not be the strongest, but they're the most dangerous Grimm around, because the sound they emit, drains you of your will to fight, to live, to do anything." Scythe exclaimed. "Get too close when they make that sound, and you're looking at being a buffet for them without caring to even trying to stop them."
"Okay, so no fighting, then what do we do?" Blake questioned.
"If Ruby had some ear plugs and some stronger rounds, she might be able to take them out like the sniper she is, but with what we currently have, we don't stand a chance." Scythe said, before they ran into Maria.
"C'mon hurry up you children." She called out.
"This way." Scythe said, leading them through an open section of the wall.
"So, what else about these Grimm should we know about?" Yang questioned.
"Unlike most Grimm, the Apathy can actually breed, and they breed like rabbits." Scythe exclaimed. "But it's an A-Sexual reproduction, a piece of their flesh falls to the ground, and within two weeks, a new Apathy is fully grown."
"So, how come you're not affected by it?" Ruby questioned.
"I am, but because of my magic, it's not as effective on me as it is on the rest of you." Scythe exclaimed. "I have a small resistance to their power, but I'm past my limit on it, the next big screech they let you, I'll be as vulnerable as the rest of you." Scythe said.
Finding Apathy left and right, wherever they went, Scythe and the group found themselves in a cellar basement somewhere, most likely under one of the buildings. All the shelves were empty, and the barrels of alcohol were gone, no doubt this was the basement cellar that Virgo told him about the night before. Looking around, their eyes widened when they saw, the biggest horde of Apathy yet, as the Grimm went to look directly at them. Scythe was most concerned because he'd reached his limit on resisting their power, and didn't wanna leave Wendy a Widow.
"Run." He called out.
As they made a run for the cellar door, the Apathy let out a screech, forcing them all to fall to the ground, drained of their will to press on.
"No." Scythe growled, trying to force himself to stay up. "Not like this. After all I've been through, after all my struggles, all my hardships, all my pain, I'm not gonna go down like this. I can't."
"An exit, an exit." Maria said.
Ruby looked up at where Maria was, and saw the stairs leading to the cellar doors. Crawling forward, Ruby tried to encourage Weiss to keep going.
"Come on." She said, putting a hand to her back, before she heard a weapon drop, and looked back to see Blake had fallen to the ground, emotionless, and tired. "Blake, get up."
"It's fine." Blake said as the Apathy crept closer.
Crawling towards her Faunus Teammate, Ruby wanted desperately to help her, to keep her from dying and from become Grimm chow. As Ruby reached her hand out to her teammate, one of the Apathy began lowering their claws, to the cat Faunus's face.
"BLAKE." Ruby shouted, before the whole room became covered in a flash of silver light, driving the Apathy back and temporarily stopping the effect they had on them.
"I've got her." Ruby said as Weiss ran towards and up the stairs, to the upper levels.
"What just happened?" Maria questioned as Weiss began pushing on the doors, but couldn't get them open.
"They're locked." She said, a bit panicked.
"I got this, move aside." Scythe said, running towards the stairs.
When Scythe was halfway up the stairs, the Apathy let out another shrill screech and they all fell down again, but Scythe was forcing himself to stay standing by supporting himself on the railing of the stairs.
Maria slumped back against the stairs, but her robotic eyes landed on Ruby and something came to her, something that was from her past that could also be part of Ruby as well, so she forced herself forward and crawled to where Ruby, Blake, and Yang lay.
"Ruby." Maria said. "What color, are your eyes?"
"They're, silver." Ruby said.
Maria gasped, realizing her hunch was right, and that were was still hope for them, as she placed her hands on Ruby's shoulders.
"You have a family, friends?" Maria questioned.
"What?"
"Answer the question Ruby." Scythe exclaimed.
"Don't think about them." Maria said, seeing Ruby become distracted by the Apathy, and covered her ears. "Think about the people who love you. Focus, on the thought of them, the way they make you feel. Focus." Maria instructed. "Life, is beautiful. It is precious, and above all, it must, be protected."
With those words, Ruby's eyes shot wide open, and she sat up, glaring at the Apathy, before another flash of silver light illuminated the room, and the Grimm were destroyed, much to the shock of most of the people there, aside from Scythe.
With the Apathy's hold on him no more, Scythe went up the rest of the steps as Weiss stepped back, and pulling his fist back, Scythe slammed it against the doors, and destroyed the chains keeping it shut, causing the alcoholic on the other side to become shocked and jump back, stopping in his search for booze, as everyone followed Scythe through the cellar doors, and found themselves in a familiar setting.
"We're back in the house?" Blake questioned.
"What's going on, what are you doing here, and more importantly, do you know where all the alcohol went?" Qrow questioned.
"We're leaving you idiot, come on." Maria said, slamming her cane down in annoyance, before heading for the door.
"You all go, I'll catch up." Scythe said.
"What are you gonna do?" Ruby asked.
"I'm gonna make sure no more unsuspecting victims can die here, ever again." Scythe said.
Outside, Oscar was filling up the tire with air, and was too focused to notice the others coming out until Yang shouted his name.
"Oscar." She called out. "We have to go now."
Back inside, Scythe cupped his hands together, and created a black ball of flames, before letting it float in the air, and sending it forward towards the open cellar door, where the Apathy were creeping in from.
"Flame/Time/Space Deity: Burning Abyss." He whispered, as it began to expand.
"Ruby, Weiss, let's move." Scythe said, grabbing Qrow by the back of his collar and dragging him out.
"Stop it, stop it what's gotten into you, what's…" Qrow was silenced when he saw the Apathy in the eerie light of the black flames of the expanding abyss spell.
After loading everyone onto the flatbed, Scythe revved up the engine, and began driving away from the settlement, leaving it just as the abyss spell reached its peak, and expanded into a giant dome of flames, enveloping the entire settlement, before shrinking back down to nothing, leaving a giant crater in the middle of nowhere.
It wasn't until at least a couple hours of driving later, that someone began to speak.
"What was that?" Oscar questioned. "What the hell was that thing that enveloped the estate?"
"It was a trump card spell." Scythe said. "It was basically a black hole made of flames."
"Will it spread?" Weiss questioned.
"No. Once it's consumed everything I intended for it to consume, it should have burned itself out. We left just in time to avoid getting caught in it. Once we left the property, we were safe from it. It should have been dead a couple minutes after we left." Scythe explained.
"What happened down in the well system?" Qrow questioned. "I've never seen those Grimm before."
"The Apathy." Maria began. "They're not strong, or ferocious, they drain your will to go on. Bartleby's estate was hemorrhaging money towards the end. He wanted to cut costs on Huntsmen protection. But, in order to do that, he needed everyone calm." She explained as Oscar read the journal Maria found out about the Apathy in. "Always."
"Managed to get two away from their pack. Hike back was miserable, but got the bastards in the cellar. Wife thinks I was out sealing the waterway entrance. I'll do it tomorrow, and tell her the truth once these things take the edge off of everyone. I'm tired." Oscar read aloud.
"The next page proves that he did." Maria said. "But not before the rest of the pack followed their missing pair, all the way home. My guess is, they made their way to the estate through the water tunnels that Bartleby sealed up, the next morning. Bartleby's plan worked." She exclaimed, taking the book from Oscar. "No one was angry or sad or scared. No one was anything. An' then, no one was left." She said before closing the book and throwing it away.
There was a moment of silence, before Weiss spoke.
"I'm sorry for what I said, about giving up." She exclaimed.
"Me to." Yang added. "An', I'm sorry about what we did to get the Relic from you Scythe."
"Its fine, the Apathy have that effect on people, don't worry." Scythe exclaimed. "But we can't quit until the lamp is safe. It's not your fault. It was due to those Grimm."
"I should have known." Maria said. "The signs were all there. But I've never seen an entire settlement, withered away like that. I, suppose my mind, just isn't what it used to be. "
"Miss Calavera?" Ruby asked, getting her attention. "How do you know so much about the Grimm? An' in the tunnels, you knew exactly what to say to make me… to make my eyes do that. How?"
"Well, isn't it obvious girl?" Maria questioned. "I had silver eyes." She smiled, amused as Ruby's question, before the flatbed and the motorbike came to a stop.
"What's the matter Scythe?" Yang questioned.
"There's someone standing in the road." Scythe exclaimed.
Scythe dismounted his bike and stood next to it as he examined, and eyed up the person standing in front of him. The person stood rather tall with a pair of glasses, and dark curly black hair, wearing a trench coat, with a silver shirt, and black pants.
"You Scythe?" He asked.
"Who's asking?"
The newcomer came walking up to Scythe, before stopping an arms-length from him, and pulled the left side of his coat out for him to see, showing the familiar diamond shaped emblem sewn into the fabric.
"My name is Ben Shigura. I was sent here by High Leader Emiya to get a mission update on how things are going, and if things seem like they're in control, I've been ordered to join you on your mission, and just like you, I'm a Celestial Knight."
