So I know the rouge reappeared in Yashahime but I actually hated that series for so many plot holes
Anyway, cute sisterly bonding with Kikyo and Kagome
Kikyo smiled fondly to herself as her reincarnation sat nearby, she found it odd to be sharing conversation with a younger form of her soul from a an alternate universe. Though she had hostility towards Kagome for traumatic reasons, she had come to develop an affection for her. Kagome was the only hope of her soul having a second chance at happiness. It caused memories of her past, before her attack from Naraku, when her soul remained untainted and and at peace, remembering when Kaede was younger, as if she had a second chance to be a sister. "Tell me Kagome, has InuYasha ever given you a gift?" Kikyo asked curiously, due to the trauma and loneliness inflicted on his heart, InuYasha didn't trust others easily. To receive a gift from him, you earned a special place in his heart, a token of affection was his most vulnerable state. Fate had brought them together, their lives were forever bound to one another, she would always be his first love. What could have been would never change for her, she was frozen in time.
Kagome blushed, shifting on the rock, discussing her personal life with Kikyo felt strange, awkward. Knowing how close they had been and how much they still cared for one another. The last thing she wanted to do was upset her. "Uh... mostly he gives me piggyback rides, once he leant me the robe of the fire rat, he complains when I get into trouble, he's really sulky all the time too" she hummed. Kagome brought her bike for travelling through the past, making it easier, but sometimes InuYasha would give her a ride, or Sango would let her ride on Kirara. The robe of the fire rat had been his fathers, it protected InuYasha like armour as to assure he would never be injured. He treated her like he was babysitting a toddler most of the time, worried to let her out of his sight.
Kikyo chuckled to herself in amusement, a sense of nostalgia rippling through her, he hadn't changed in all these fifty years. InuYasha was fiercely protective of those he cared for, fearing for their safety and anyone who threatened it. The way he held her in his arms when they crossed paths, tenderly yet so tight he was scared to let go. It made her feel as loved as she had back then. "He's truly as stubborn as they come, though it's also an endearing trait of his" she smiled, he wore his heart on his sleeve as much as he tried to deny it. InuYasha could never discard the human part of himself, it made him who he was, it was what caused everyone around him to trust him. Kagome nodded in agreement, she couldn't deny Kikyo was indeed correct.
Kikyo rummaged in her robe sleeve, removing her hand to reveal a Beni rouge, she'd carried it with her for so long, it felt like a piece of her. It had belonged to Izayoi, InuYasha's mother, the day she received it she nearly gave him the beads of subjugation. She was so touched at InuYasha's sincere gift she couldn't bring herself to seal him, that she hid them away. Kagome stared in shock at the shell, it was so beautifully white, like snow, wondering where Kikyo had gotten it from. Kikyo opened it to reveal rouge within "InuYasha gave me this as a token of courtship shortly after we met, it was the first time I had ever been given a gift. I can still remember the night I tried it on, for the first time in my life I felt normal. Like an ordinary woman" she reflected, sadness in her voice. Kikyo had discarded any desire for perfume, rouge, anything girly that the other women in her village coveted. Making her a stronger priestess as a result, while Tsubaki adorned rouge, eyeshadow and more, making herself as loud as her personality. But this precious gift, she wore it in secret, something special.
Kagome stared, it looked familiar, going through memories of conversations with InuYasha and Myoga, before she realised why it was so familiar. She felt a flash of jealousy and sadness wash through her "Isn't that... Lady Izayoi's?" she questioned. She couldn't believe Kikyo still had it, decades after her demise, after being resurrected she still had the shell. She'd protected it all this time.
Kikyo nodded, clasping the shell close to her heart protectively, inheriting a gift that had belonged to InuYasha's mother. A woman whom InuYasha had loved as much as he loved her. Showing how important she was to him, something she would never forget. "I never believed I was worthy of something so precious, showing his sincere love for me. I held it close always" she explained. Kikyo's life had been one of poverty, bloodshed, war and protecting the village. She was used to tending to the sick, injured and helpless, devoting her life to being a priestess. But InuYasha saw something in her, felt something for her, so much he gave her this. Kagome was speechless, how was she supposed to respond to this? This was another secret of his past that InuYasha had never spoken of, one he shared with Kikyo. InuYasha had gifted Kikyo with the last remaining item he had of his mother. He'd held it close for so many years and then when he met Kikyo, knew she was the most worthy of it. How could she compare to that kind of devotion? Kagome had experienced crushes, admirers and presents from boys, cookies, flowers and letters. But never had someone given her a present like this. She had no words to convey how she felt. This gesture alone spoke volume of how much Kikyo meant to him.
Kikyo's gaze became pained, her eyes glassy with tears "The day Naraku tricked me, when he lured me out to kill me. He smashed it to pieces, I suppose in his mind a sick symbol of crushing InuYasha and I's love for one another. After my resurrection, I hunted down the shards and took them to Hosenki" she explained. Naraku had taken the face of InuYasha, lured her out into the open, gravely wounded her and taunted her. Then destroyed the shell to spite her, to truly plant the seeds of doubt. After learning the truth, she gathered the pieces, took them to Hosenki, asked for them to be repaired. She stayed with the demon until it was forged and thanked him. She would never let it escape her grasp again. A look of rage formed on Kagome's face, her body trembling with anger, the day he was finally slain so many would know peace. Naraku really knew no limits to his cruelty, how far he was willing to go to hurt people. The lives he'd ruined, corrupted and tormented with his influence, like a messed up game purely for his entertainment, he had no allies only puppets. He'd ripped Kikyo and InuYasha apart out of jealousy and spite, then destroyed the gift InuYasha gave her, destroying a remnant of InuYasha's past. He took great pleasure in prolonging the suffering of others in many different forms, his pattern of deceit and destruction. But those who defied him payed the price. Kikyo had bravely gathered the shards and taken them to be recovered, knowing Naraku would hunt her down. "This small Beni is the last pure memory of my happiness with InuYasha..." Kikyo smiled sadly, the memories of whens he was still human, still alive. When she was happy, when she had a future, when she was loved. Her grip on the rouge tightened, her hands trembling "...As selfish and pathetic as it seems, I can't let it go" she reflected. She couldn't bring herself to return it, she couldn't discard it, she wanted to hold onto this piece of InuYasha for eternity.
Kagome softened, reaching out to take Kikyo's hand supportively, this was the most human side of Kikyo, grieving for what could have been. "You... you aren't selfish for treasuring it, InuYasha gave you that because he loved you. He still loves you after all this time, he gave you the last piece of his mother, showing you what you meant to him" she comforted. Kikyo had lost her family during the war as a young child and raised her sister alone. She fell in love for the first time and wanted to be happy. Holding onto something from her past wasn't stupid. Kikyo had loved InuYasha so devotedly with every piece of her heart, even now that love still lingered, she protected the only treasure she had in her life. All she had ever wanted was a life with InuYasha, to be by his side and know peace. If InuYasha knew she still had it he would be touched, knowing Kikyo still held something he gifted her, something he had given her as a token of love. The rage Naraku would feel, knowing it had been restored and Kikyo still harboured it, Kagome couldn't help but find that amusing.
Kikyo softened, a soft blush coloured her cheeks "Kagome... do you own a mirror?" she questioned shyly, she hadn't done this in so long, though she had been tempted. Like it was foolish, but she wanted to abandon rationality and follow her heart.
Kagome held a compact mirror carefully, a sense of amusement filling her, this was the last thing she expected to happen but she would happily indulge. She was so used to being the older sister to a little brother, that she usually spoke about girly stuff with her friends. She brought necessities from home in case she would need them, this little moment with Kikyo made her feel like a younger sibling, the feeling was rather fun. But it brought a sense of sadness too, she wondered if Kikyo had been able to share moments like this with Kaede before her death. Kaede rarely spoke of her older sister, keeping her heart closed off, it seemed the two had this in common.
Kikyo delicately applied rouge to her lips, using a single finger, slow, delicate, gentle, not once flinching or smearing. Kagome was impressed by her skill, it seemed Kikyo had many talents, but this was the most unexpected. Eventually lowering her finger and wiping the residual rouge from her finger, wiping it on her trousers. Once she was done applying, Kagome couldn't help but stare. Kikyo's pale complexion really suited the rouge, bringing out her lips and haunting brown eyes, her lips resembling rose petals. If Kikyo had been born in her era, she had the appearance and complexion to be a model. She looked so mature with it, almost resembling the late priestess Midoriko. Kikyo caught her staring, raising an eyebrow curiously "You're staring, do I look odd?" she questioned.
Kagome blinked, laughing awkwardly and closing the compact "Gomen, it's just...I've never seen you in make-up, you look... lovely" she mumbled. Kikyo had always kept her face plain, never making the most of her femininity, never styling herself. Sometimes she wondered if she knew how attractive she was to those around her. How easily she could sway hearts and seduce others. She could see why InuYasha had fallen in love with her, Kikyo unknowingly had a sense of charm and beauty that would make anyone fall in love with her. Sometimes she forgot that Kikyo was only four years older than her, also a teenager. Courtship, dating, flirting, relationships, it was all so different in this time period compared to back home.
Kikyo blushed, she hadn't received compliments for a long time, and for her reincarnation to be so kind, it was a touching moment, bonding. She had forgotten how to be a woman, forgotten what it felt like to be a girl. Mourning for the life she lost, the small moments like these that were robbed from her. She smiled, slowly hiding the rouge back in her robes, where it would remain safe. "Arigato Kagome, I appreciate your kindness", Kagome had a big heart and had no reason to show her such gestures, but she appreciated them. Kagome laughed, without the tension, worry of Naraku and Kikyo playing lone wolf, Kikyo felt like a teenage girl, merely lost and confused. As if she was seeing an old friend, someone from school she was passing time with. Seeing her softer girlier side humanised her, Kikyo was even cute almost, bashful. It was nice.
