Book 1 Chapter 12 The Storm
Amity's intro
Water. Earth. Fire. Air.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed her most, she vanished. A hundred years passed, and me, Willow and Gus discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Luz. And although her airbending skills are great, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save anyone.
But I believe Luz can save the world.
The episode begins in Luz's dream. The scene itself, dominated by a tinge of warm yellow, is filled with clouds for a moment before Luz and Amity slides into the frame of the shot, their faces happy as Luz flicks the reins. The shot switches to a far view, showing that they are riding Appa, who is flapping his six legs in unison up and down as if he were a bird. The camera pans to the right, revealing Willow as she pulls alongside Appa, using Luz's glider to fly with the Avatar. The shot cuts to a close-up of the Earth Kingdom princess as she turns her head toward Luz, grinning broadly and contentedly at her. Cut to Luz as her face exhibits the same contented grin. She and Amity turn their attention to their right and the camera follows their gaze, revealing Gus and Eda sitting atop the head of an enormous King, they wave at Luz. Camera moves back to a wide frontal shot of the group coursing leisurely through the open sky.
(Voice-over.) "We need you, Luz." Amity said
(Close-up as she is looking toward Amity, contentedly.) "I need you, too." Luz said
Luz notices something out of the corner of her eyes. As she turns toward it, her expression changes to shock. Focusing on Luz's face, the camera turns 180 degrees and switches to her point of view as the sky's coloring changes to a dark, ominous gray, revealing a churning storm cloud before her. Cut back to Luz, who yanks Appa's reins in fright.
(Alarmed.) "Be careful, guys!" (She looks to her left and right, uneasy.) "Guys?" Luz asked
The scene rapidly zooms out, revealing that Luz and Appa are alone, surrounded by nothing but the darkening sky. Cut back to Luz's point of view as Klatso, in lotus, floats downward, positioning himself in front of Luz.
(Surprised.) "Klatso?" Luz asked
(Whispering, his tone sad.) "Why did you disappear?" Klatso asked
(Frontal shot, his voice soft and sad.) "I didn't mean to." Luz said
Cut to a side-view of the two monks, not a meter apart from one another. Luz reaches out to Klatso, but before she can touch him, Klatso turns gray and dissipates into smoke, it blows over Luz, causing her to raise her left arm in front of her face and turn away to shield herself from it. Frontal shot of Luz as the last of the smoke washes over her. She peeks over her arm, but instantly raises her head, her eyes growing big in shock; a dark shadow passes over her as the shot cuts to a distant side-view of Appa being swallowed by the dark cloud.
(Voice-over.) "We need you, Luz." Klatso said
A bolt of lightning splits the shot for an instant before cutting to a frontal shot of a screaming and frightened Luz, wrestling with the reins, as she and Appa are caught in the belly of the storm with rain beating down on them. Cut to an underwater shot as Luz and Appa plummet into the ocean. The duo floats for a moment. Cut to a close-up of Luz's hand as her grip on Appa's reins loosens and they slip from her limp grasp.
(Echoing voice-over.) "We need you, Luz." (Cut to a downward view of an unconscious Luz sinking.) "We need you. We need you, Luz. We need you." Amity and Klatso said
Unmoving, Luz sinks and disappears into the darkness of the ocean. For a fraction of a second, lightning splits the shot once again and the silhouette of the Fire Emperor surrounded by flames appears.
The scene cuts to reality as Luz, gasping for air and shooting upright, startles King, who was curled up on top of Luz. King leaps onto Amity's stomach, causing her to shoot up with a startled look on her face, along with Gus and Eda, before jumping on Willow's, who shoots up, still sleepy, halfheartedly wielding her dagger and boomerang.
(Drowsily.) "What's going on?" (She looks around.) "Did we get captured again?" Willow asked
(Shot looking down, sliding right, Luz turns to her friends.) "It's nothing. I just had a bad dream." (She curls up, facing away from them.) "Go back to sleep." Luz said
(Curls up, facing away from Luz.) "Don't have to tell me twice." Willow said
(Frontal shot of Luz with Amity behind her, looking at her in concern.) "Are you all right, Luz?" Amity asked
(Looking lost.) "I'm okay." Luz said
"Best get back to sleep, gonna need it in the morning." Eda said while laying back on the ground going back to sleep
"Yeah, we still have some traveling before we reach the Northern Water Tribe." Gus said as he did the same
"You seem to be having a lot of nightmares lately. You want to tell me about it?" Amity asked
(Briefly closing her eyes.) "I think I just need some rest." Luz said
(Sitting up behind Eda, upbeat.) "You guys want to hear about my dream?" (Amity glares at her, an expression Willow returns.) "That's okay. I didn't want to talk about it anyway." Willow said
Willow lies down, disappearing from view, Amity does the same.
Scene changes to waves crashing on a sandy shore under a blue sky. Cut to a wide frontal shot of Amity and Gus as they carry their packs toward Appa, who yawns. As the animal closes its mouth again, Luz is revealed sitting on his head, while Willow and Eda sit on the saddle.
"Look at those clear skies, buddy!" (Pets Appa's head. Cut to a close shot as he looks up at a flock of birds arranged in a "V" flying overhead, their goose-like honking audible.) "Should be some smooth flying." Luz said
Cut to an overhead shot looking down on Amity looking into a bag before holding it upside down, sprinkling the ground with crumbs; King instantly eats them. Willow walks past her toward Appa, carrying some of their luggage.
(Looking from the contents of the bag up to Luz.) "Well, we better smoothly fly" (She steps onto Appa's tail and walks to the saddle with Gus following from behind.) "ourselves to a market, 'cause we're out of food." Amity said
(Side-shot as she suddenly straightens up, her tone serious.) "Guys, wait. This was in my dream." (King lands on the pack behind her.) "We shouldn't go to the market." Willow said
(Shot cuts beside Willow, facing out toward Luz, Amity, Gus and Eda, who turn to look at her, curious.) "What happened in your dream?" Gus asked
(Frontal shot, her eyes are bugged out in terror and the camera zooms in on her, rolling slightly as the shot takes on a greenish tint and alien music dubs the scene.) "Food eats people!" (The colors return to normal as the shot cuts to Gus's face as he shakes his head. Behind him, Luz goes back to adjusting the reins, Amity pinches the bridge of her nose, while Eda shows a confused look on her face. Cut to Willow again as she points at King.) "Also, King could talk." (She glares at King while crossing her arms.) "You said some very unkind things." Willow said
King's ears droop as Willow speaks. Cut to a downward looking shot of a flock of birds in V-formation flying over the open ocean. As the scene pans to the left, Lilith's ship sails into view. Cut to the deck, where Kaldo stands on the deck, with Lilith looking through a spyglass behind him. As the flight of birds passes over Kaldo's head in the distance, he sniffs the air and Lilith lowers the spyglass to turn to her lieutenant, who speaks.
"There is a storm coming. A big one." Kaldo said
"You're out of your mind, Kaldo. (Walking up to Kaldo.) "The weather's perfect. There's not a cloud in sight." Lilith said
The shot cuts behind the two, facing the prow of the ship and showing a clear sea and sky.
"A storm is approaching from the north." (He turns to face Lilith.) "I suggest we alter our course and head southwest." Kaldo said
(Taking a few steps in Kaldo's direction, pointing briefly northward.) "We know the Avatar is traveling northward, so we will do the same." Lilith said
(Cut to his face, stern.) "Commander Lilith, consider the safety of the crew." Kaldo said
(Cut to her face as she advances on her lieutenant angrily.) "The safety of the crew doesn't matter!" Lilith said
Behind them, Sublieutenant Jee walks onto deck, inadvertently overhearing the conversation. As Lilith realizes Jee is behind her and turns to face him, her expression briefly loses its raging intensity. A quick close-up shows Jee raising an eyebrow as Lilith walks over to him, another cut shifts the view to the sublieutenant's side as Lilith, addressing Jee directly, struts up to him, dominantly looking him right in the eyes from a close distance as she finishes speaking.
"Finding the Avatar is far more important than any individual's safety." Lilith said
As Lilith walks away, Jee glares after her. The shot switches, showing Lilith leaving the deck through the door at the base of the superstructure. Cut to a frontal shot of Jee, who looks slightly enraged as Kaldo walks over to him.
(Reassuringly, a twinge of uncertainty in his voice, almost as if he does not fully believe what he is saying.) "She doesn't mean that. She's just all worked up." Kaldo said
The scene changes to a seaside hamlet built on the side of a cliff face, the roofs all teal-green; a collection of houses sits back from the waterfront, where a row of warehouses adjoins the docks. Among the several ships moored on the town's four piers is Appa, floating in the water by himself. Cut to Amity and Eda, who stands in front of a small merchants' stand, suspiciously eying a watermelon.
(Scowling.) "Ahhh, it's good. It's perfect, I'm telling you!" the Merchant Woman said
(Shaking the watermelon, which emits an audible sloshing sound.) "I don't know if I like the sound of that swishing." Eda said
(As the shot zooms out, the merchant moves around the stand where Amity and Eda stand. Luz, Gus and Willow, staff in hand, stand beside them, the former is filling a basket with fruit.) "Swishing means it's ripe! It's the ripe juices swishing around, eh?" the Merchant Woman asked
(Taking a step toward Amity.) "I think it's true, Amity. Swishing means it's ripe." Luz said
(As the shot cuts to a frontal view of her, she takes the melon from Eda and puts it back on the stand.) "I just realized we're out of money anyway." Amity said
(Annoyed, grabbing a basket full of fruits from Willow.) "Awww!" the Merchant Woman yelled
As Gus and Willow walk past the merchant, she indignantly kicks them in the rear, drawing a cry of pain from Gus. Cut to Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow and Eda on the docks. Gus and Willow are rubbing where the lady kicked them and seems downcast.
"Out of food and out of money. Now what are we supposed to do?" Willow asked
"You could get a job, smart girl." Amity said
A fisherman and his wife are walking behind the gang. As Amity finishes, they begin a loud, heated conversation, which is overheard easily by Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow and Eda.
"We shouldn't go out there! Please, the fish can wait. There's going to be a terrible storm." the Fisherman's Wife said (Camera cuts to show Luz, who appears alarmed by the prediction.)
"You're crazy. It's a nice day." (Gesturing to the sky with both arms.) "No clouds, no winds, no nothing. So quit your nagging, woman." the Fisherman said
(Nervously suggesting to Amity, Gus, Willow and Eda.) "Maybe we should find some shelter?" Luz asked
(Indicating the fair weather.) "Are you kidding? Shelter from what?" Willow asked
"My joints say there's going to be a storm! A bad one." the Fisherman's Wife said
"Well, it's your joints against my brain." the Fisherman said
"Then I hope your brain can find someone else to haul that fish, 'cause I ain't comin'." the Fisherman's Wife said
"Then I'll find a new fish hauler and pay him or her double what you get!" (Cut to a side shot of the couple, showing Willow running up to them dragging Gus along.) "How do you like that?" the Fisherman asked
(Interrupting, raising her hand with her other arm over Gus' shoulders.) "We'll go." Willow said as Gus tried to get out of her grip
"You're both hired!" the Fisherman said (Shoots a triumphant look at his wife, who scowls back.)
(After a short pause, to Luz, Amity and Eda.) "What? You said get a job ... and he's paying double." Willow said
(Rounding on Willow, his expression wild.) "Double? Who told you that nonsense?" the Fisherman asked
The scene changes to Lilith's ship on the open ocean. As the shot pans right, a massive bank of darkening clouds, having appeared seemingly out of nowhere, rolls into view, looming in front of the ship. Cut to the deck, where Sublieutenant Jee and several other soldiers stand a short distance from the shot, staring at the clouds. Lilith walks into the foreground, regarding the clouds as Jee and the others turn to face her. Kaldo walks between Lilith and Jee as the latter taunts the former.
"Looks like your lieutenant was right about the storm after all." Jee said
(Pleasantly.) "Lucky guess." Kaldo said
(Whirling around and walking toward Jee, angry.) "Sublieutenant! You'd better learn some respect (Jabs two fingers into Jee's chest.) "– or I will teach it to you." Lilith said (Begins to walk away from Jee, who follows Lilith with his eyes, continuing his taunting after a short pause.)
"What do you know about respect?" (Behind Jee, Kaldo's expression turns to panic and he makes a cutting motion at his throat with his hand, trying to signal Sublieutenant Jee to stop. Cut to Lilith's back as she stops walking before switching to her face as she listens to Jee's words.) "The way you talk to everyone around here, from your hard-working crew to your esteemed Lieutenant, shows you know nothing about respect!" (Cut to a close-up of Kaldo's face as he gasps slightly, reaching out a hand in desperation before moving it to his forehead in resignation, believing Jee has gone too far. Cut back to Lilith's face, contorted with rage.) "You don't care about anyone but yourself! Then again, what should I expect from a spoiled commander?" Jee asked
Lilith turns around and extends her right arm as if preparing to firebend. Sublieutenant Jee does the same.
"Easy now." (Both Lilith and Jee wrist-block the other's arm, smoke rises from a furious Lilith's hand. Interrupting the staredown, Kaldo extends an arm and pulls theirs apart, the smoke fades.) "Enough! We're all a bit tired from being at sea so long. I'm sure after a bowl of noodles, everyone will feel much better." Kaldo said
Sublieutenant Jee walks away.
"I don't need your help keeping order on my ship." Lilith said
Kaldo puts a comforting hand on Lilith's right shoulder, but Lilith shrugs it off and walks away. Scene changes back to a dock at the fishing town, where Team Avatar stands. Gus and Willow are carrying supplies onto the fisherman's boat.
"Willow, maybe this isn't such a good idea. Look at the sky." Luz said
"I said I was going to do this job. I can't back out just because of some bad weather." Willow said
"Did you have to bring me into this?" Gus asked
"The girl with the tattoos has some sense. You should listen to her!" the Fisherman's Wife said
"Girl with tattoos?" (The fisherman turns around to look at Luz.) "Airbender tattoos. Well, I'll be a hog monkey's uncle. You're the Avatar, ain't ya?" the Fisherman asked
"That's right." Amity said (Luz, Amity and Eda smile.)
"Well, don't be so smiley about it." (Luz, Amity and Eda frown now.) "The Avatar disappeared for a hundred years! You turned your back on the world!" the Fisherman said
"Don't yell at her! Luz would never turn her back on anyone." Eda said
"Oh, she wouldn't, huh? Then I guess I must have imagined the last hundred years of war and suffering." the Fisherman said (Luz's eyes widened.)
"Luz is the bravest person I know. She's done nothing but help people and save lives since I met her." (Behind Amity's back, Luz slowly begins to backpedal away from her.) "It's not her fault she disappeared, right Luz?" (Amity turns around to see Luz backing away.) "Luz, what's wrong?" Amity asked
A look of shock and horrified guilt on her face, Luz opens her glider and vaults into the air, rapidly disappearing into the distance.
"That's right! Keep flying!" the Fisherman yelled
"That's not a good sign" Eda said worried about what Luz did
"You're a horrible old man!" (She and Eda get on Appa, who is floating beside the dock.) "Appa, yip yip!" Amity said
As Appa flies out of the water, a big wave splashes the fisherman. Gus and Willow walk out from below deck on the boat.
"Hey! They left without saying good-bye!" Gus yelled
"Your friends ain't too polite, are they?" the Fisherman asked
"I know! This one time, I was …" Willow didn't finish
(Hands Gus and Willow a crate, interrupting her impolitely.) "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Get below deck!" the Fisherman said
Scene changes to show Amity and Eda riding on Appa in the rain, trying to find Luz. The shot cuts to show a cave on the side of a cliff face. Camera changes to a view of Amity and Eda outside the cave and Luz sitting alone inside, surrounded by darkness.
(Quietly.) "I'm sorry for running away." Luz said
"It's okay. That fisherman was way out of line." Amity said
"Actually, he wasn't." Luz said
(Surprised.) "What do you mean?" Eda asked
(Speaks in a sad voice.) "I don't want to talk about it." Luz said
"It has to do with your dream, doesn't it?" [Puts her hand on Luz's shoulder.) "Talk to me." Amity said
"Well, it's kind of a long story." Luz said
Suddenly, King leaps past Luz, Amity and Eda, startling them. Appa has also entered the cave. He nuzzles Luz's head with his nose, making Luz smile. Luz pats Appa's chin.
"I'm going to try to get a little fire going." Eda said
Next scene shows Luz, Amity and Eda sitting around a fire. King is lying on Luz's lap.
"I'll never forget the day the monks told me I was the Avatar. I was playing with some other kids just outside the South Wall. I was trying to teach them how to do the air scooter." Luz said
Scene changes to a flashback when Luz is with some other Air Nomads.
"First you got to form the ball, then you got to get on quick." Luz said
Luz is seen riding around on the scooter in the court. One of the boys tries it.
"Okay, here goes." an Air Nomad Boy said
The boy forms it and tries getting on, but spins and falls off. Luz gently gets off his.
"You kind of have to balance on it like it's a top." Luz said
"Man, that's hard." an Air Nomad Boy said
"Where'd you learn that trick, Luz?" the second Air Nomad Boy asked
"I made it up." Luz said
"Wow!" the second Air Nomad Boy said
Camila and the Council of Elders showed up at that moment.
"Luz, come with us. We need to speak with you." Klatso said
"It's important, dear" Camila said
Scene changes to when Luz, Camila and the elder monks are in the meeting room.
"How do you know it's me?" Luz asked
"We have known you were the Avatar for some time. Do you remember these?" Tashi asked
Monk Tashi airbends a wrapped-up mat to Luz. It opens up, revealing four toys.
"Those were some of my favorite toys when I was little!" Luz said (She picks up the propeller toy.)
"You chose them from among thousands of toys, Luz. The toys you picked were the four Avatar relics. These items belonged to Avatar's past. Your own past lives." Tashi said
"I just chose them because they seemed fun." Luz said
She smiles and pulls the cord on the propeller toy, sending the propeller spinning into the air. It spins through the air and the scene cuts back to a close view of the five monks. The toy goes over Monk Tashi's head.
"You chose them because they were familiar." Tashi said
"Normally we would have told you of your identity when you turned sixteen, but there are troubling signs. Storm clouds are gathering." Klatso said
"I fear that war may be upon us, young Avatar." Pasang said
"We need you, Luz." Klatso said
Luz lowers her head, her responsibility crushing her. Her head stays lowered as the flashback ends and her head remains lowered in the present as well. Cut to a wider shot of Luz and Amity on the left, Eda on the right, the fire between them. Amity looks upon him with concern and sympathy. The scene changes back to Lilith's ship. Jee is talking about Lilith to a couple other men.
"I'm sick of taking her orders! I'm tired of chasing her Avatar! I mean, who does Lilith think she is?" Jee asked
"Do you really want to know?" a voice asked
Jee is shown standing up at the sound of the voice and then looked up to see it was from Kaldo.
"Lieutenant Kaldo. We were just-" (Kaldo cuts him off.)
"It's okay. May I join you?" Kaldo asked
"Of course, sir." Jee said
Kaldo is shown sitting down.
(aligns his mask.) "Try to understand. My commander is a complicated woman. She has been through much." Kaldo said
Scene changes to a flashback. Lilith walks up to the curtains to get into the war room, but the guard on the left moves in front of the curtain to stop her.
"Let me in!" Young Lilith said
(Places his hands on Lilith's shoulders.) "Deputy Chief Lilith, what's wrong?" Kaldo asked
"I want to go into the war chamber" (Points to the guard.) "but the guard won't let me pass!" Young Lilith said
(Leads Lilith away with his left hand still on her shoulder.) "You're not missing anything, trust me. These meetings are dreadfully boring." Kaldo said
"If I'm going to become a commander of this nation one day, don't you think I need to start learning as much as I can?" Young Lilith asked
"Very well. But you must promise not to speak." (Another elderly soldier walks by them into the war chamber.) "These old folks are a bit sensitive, you know?" Kaldo asked
(Bows to Iroh.) "Thank you, general." Young Lilith said
"There's no need to call me that, just call me Kaldo" Kaldo said
Lilith and Kaldo walk into the war room. The meeting starts.
"The Earth Kingdom defenses are concentrated here." (Bujing shows the place on the map.) "A dangerous battalion of their strongest earthbenders and fiercest warriors. So I am recommending the forty-first division." Bujing said
"But the forty-first is entirely new recruits. How do you expect them to defeat a powerful Earth Kingdom battalion?" the Elderly Soldier asked
"I don't. They'll be used as a distraction while we mount an attack from the rear. What better to use as bait than fresh meat?" Bujing asked
(Lilith is shown standing up.) "You can't sacrifice an entire division like that! Those soldiers love and defend our nation! How can you betray them?" Young Lilith asked
Camera shows everyone in the war room staring at Lilith, save for Kaldo, who is kneeling behind the deputy chief. The scene changes back to the present time.
"Lilith was right, you see," (aligns his mask again.) "but it was not her place to speak out. And there were dire consequences." Kaldo said (Slightly bows his head.)
Scene changes back to Luz, Amity and Eda.
"So you were upset that you were the Avatar? Why wouldn't you be excited about it?" Eda asked
"Well, I didn't know how to feel about it. All I knew was that after I found out, everything began changing." Luz said
Scene changes back to flashback. Luz enters the South Wall again. The Air Nomad kids are shown on air scooters.
"Hey, not bad! You guys have been practicing!" Luz said
"Not only that! We made up a game you can play with the air scooters!" a second Air Nomad Boy said
"Great!" (Luz is shown making his own. But everyone else makes theirs vanish.) "What's going on?" Luz asked
"Now that you're the Avatar, it's kind of an unfair advantage for whichever team you're on." an Air Nomad Boy said
"But I'm still the same! Nothing's changed! So, what? I can't play?" Luz asked
"That's the only fair way." an Air Nomad Boy said
"Oh, okay." Luz said
"Sorry, Luz." a second Air Nomad Boy said
Luz is shown leaving the South Wall.
"Okay. Now, who wants Jinju on their team?" an Air Nomad Boy said
Jinju is shown in the corner with a gas around him, laughing. Scene changes to Luz and Klatso playing a game of Pai Sho as Camila was making some tea. Luz is shown moving a piece.
"Very interesting move, young one." Klatso said
"What do you mean?" Luz asked
Klatso is shown using airbending to make a spiral, flipping a part of Luz's clothing as Camila was startled from feeling it nearly spilling the tea. Klatso quickly moves two pieces around. Luz is shown flipping her clothing back into place.
"Hey!" Luz said
Klatso and Luz laugh as Camila holds her hand against her chest taking deep breaths. Monk Tashi appears.
"You're playing games with her? The Avatar should be training!" Tashi said
"Luz has already trained enough for today." Klatso said
"I agree with him, except for airbending inside, it makes me nervous" Camila said as Luz quietly chuckled
"Time is short." (To Luz.) "Come with me. I must test you on some high level techniques." Tashi said
"No. As long as I'm her guardian, I will decide when she trains ... and when she gets her butt kicked at Pai Sho." Klatso said
"Hmph." Tashi said
Monk Tashi is shown walking away. The flashback ends, and the scene changes to Lilith's ship. A flashback appears of the fire in front of the Fire Emperor's throne rising.
"After Lilith's outburst in the meeting, the Fire Emperor became very angry with her." (Flashback quickly ends.) "He said the challenge against the general was an act of complete disrespect! And there was only one way to resolve this." Kaldo said
"Agni Kai. A fire duel." Jee said
"That's right. Lilith looked upon the old general she had insulted and declared that she was not afraid. But Lilith misunderstood." (Flashback shows an overview of the chamber, the camera cuts to show Lilith preparing for the Agni Kai.) "When she turned to face her opponent, she was surprised to see it was not the general." (Flashback shows the tippet that was on Lilith's shoulders fall down to the ground.) "Lilith had spoken out against the general's plan, but by doing so in the Fire Emperor's war room, it was the Fire Emperor whom he had disrespected." (Frontal shot of a surprised Lilith, as the camera zooms in on her, her expression changes to one of fear.) "Lilith would have to duel her old mentor. The Fire Emperor himself." Kaldo said
Cut to a wall of the cave. The shot pans down to show Amity, Eda and a sad-looking Luz around their campfire. While King is asleep in her lap, Luz stares off into the fire with unseeing eyes as she continues her story.
"Then, just when I was feeling better, something worse happened." Luz said
Scene changes to flashback of Camila, Monk Tashi and Monk Klatso speaking to Monk Pasang.
"Luz needs to have freedom and fun. She needs to grow up as a normal girl." Klatso said
"You cannot keep protecting her from her destiny." Tashi said
"She's my daughter, you can't just have her train all the time, she needs a break now and then!" Camila said
"Camila, Klatso, I know you two mean well, but both of you are letting your affections for the girl cloud your judgments." Pasang said
"All I want is what is best for her." Camila said
"She is still adjusting to being the Avatar" Klatso said
"But what we need is what's best for the world. You two and Luz must be separated! The Avatar will be sent away to the Eastern Air Temple to complete her training." Pasang said
Luz is shown looking through a hole in the ceiling, shocked at the news that she just heard.
"That's awful, Luz. I don't know what to say." Amity said
(Stands up.) "How could they do that to me? They wanted to take away everything I knew and everyone I loved!" Luz yelled (She activates the Avatar State.)
"Whoa! Hot cinders!" Eda yelled
Luz comes out of the Avatar State, walks to the fire, and sits down next to Amity again.
"I'm sorry I got so mad." Luz said
"You have the right to be angry after the monks sent you away like that." Amity said
"Well, that's not exactly what happened." (Flashback starts again, showing Luz looking out the window of her bedroom.) "I was afraid and confused. I didn't know what to do." Luz said
Flashback shows Luz lying on her bed before changing to Klatso walking to Luz's room.
"Luz, I'm not going to let them take you away from me or your mother. Luz?" Klatso asked (Klatso is shown opening the door more, spotting the scroll, and opening it up. He gasps, and sees a storm coming outside the window.)
(Still in present, but flashback playing still.) "I never saw Klatso or my mom again." (Flashback shows Luz and Appa through the storm, and how Luz got into the iceberg.) "Next thing I knew, I was waking up in your arms after you found me in the iceberg." Luz said
Flashback shows Amity's face that was seen in "The Girl in the Iceberg". The flashback ends.
"You ran away." Eda said
"And then the Fire Nation attacked our temple. My people needed me and I wasn't there to help." Luz said
"You don't know what would have-." Amity didn't finish
"The world needed me and I wasn't there to help." Luz said
"Aang …" Amity said as she puts a hand on Luz's shoulder
"The fisherman was right! I did turn my back on the world!" Luz said
"You're being too hard on yourself, even if you did run away. I think it was meant to be. If you had stayed, you would have been killed along with all the other airbenders." Eda said only to gain a stern look from Amity
"You don't know that." Luz said
"I know it was meant to be this way. The world needs you now. You give people hope." Amity said
Scene changes back to Lilith's ship.
"When Deputy Chief Lilith saw that it was her mentor who had come to duel her, she begged for mercy." Kaldo said
Flashback shows a side overview of the Agni Kai chamber where Belos is advancing on Lilith.
(Cut to a side-view of Lilith.) "Please, Emperor. I only had the Fire Nation's best interest at heart. I'm sorry I spoke out of turn!" Young Lilith said (Slightly lowers her head.)
Cut to a frontal shot from a worm's eye perspective of Belos' silhouette walking up to Lilith.
"You will fight for your honor." Belos said
(Frontal shot, kneels on her knees and forearms, while looking at the floor.) "I meant you no disrespect." (Gazes up at her mentor, tears shimmering in her eyes as her voice starts to waver.) "I am your loyal soldier." Young Lilith said
(Far off frontal shot of Lilith as Belos' shadow and eventually his head come into view.) "Rise and fight, Deputy Chief Lilith!" Belos commanded
Cut to a side-view from behind some of the spectators as Belos reaches Lilith, who lowers her head to the floor again.
"I won't fight you." Young Lilith said
"You will learn respect," (Lilith pushes herself up on her knees and hands. Cut to a frontal shot of Lilith as she starts to shake.) "and suffering will be your" (Lilith looks up at Belos, tears streaming down her face.) "teacher." Belos said
Cut to a frontal view of Bhao, Kaldo, and Kikimora in the crowd. While Kaldo clenches his teeth behind his mask and looks fearful and worried on Lilith's behalf, Bhao looks on with a smirk on his face, while Kikimora smiles behind her high-collared veil and raises her left fist in front of her chest in anticipation.
(Voice-over, Kaldo closes his eyes and averts his head to the left.) "I looked away." Kaldo said
As the sound of a fire blast is heard, Lilith is screaming "no", which echoes. While the faces of the spectators are brightened by the flames, the camera slowly zooms in on Kaldo's averted face. The scene switches from the past to the present, where Kaldo is sitting in the same manner.
"I always thought that Commander Lilith was in a training accident." Jee said
"It was no accident. After the duel, the Fire Emperor said that by refusing to fight, Lilith had shown shameful weakness. He did make her commander. But as punishment, she was banished and sent to capture the Avatar. Only then could she return with her honor." Kaldo said
"So that's why she's so obsessed. Capturing the Avatar is the only chance she has of things returning to normal." Jee said
"Things will never return to normal. But the important thing is that the Avatar gives Lilith hope." Kaldo said
Scene changes to show Lilith meditating, while having flashbacks of her younger life. She is stopped by a hit on the ship. Scene changes to Luz, Amity and Eda. The fisherman's wife appears.
"Help! Oh, please help!" the Fisherman's Wife pleaded
(Grabs the lady and brings her near the fire.) "It's okay. You're safe." Amity said
"But my husband isn't." the Fisherman's Wife said
"What do you mean? Where's Gus and Willow?" Eda asked
"They haven't returned! They should have been back by now! And this storm is becoming a typhoon! They're caught out at sea!" the Fisherman's Wife said in panic
"I'm going to find them!" Luz said
"I'm going with you!" Amity said as she followed Luz
"Don't forget me!" Eda said coming along
"I'm staying here." the Fisherman's Wife said
The fisherman's wife is shown sitting down by the fire. Luz, Amity and Eda are shown about to leave on Appa.
"We'll be back soon. I promise." Luz said
Luz, Amity and Eda fly out. Scene changes to Lilith's ship, with Lilith on the deck.
"Where were we hit?" Lilith asked
"I don't know!" Jee said
"Look!" Kaldo yelled
"The helmsman!" Lilith said
Lilith and Sublieutenant Jee are shown climbing up a ladder to help a man who is about to fall. Lightning goes down to the middle of the ship, where Kaldo is. He uses redirection so it does not damage the ship. Scene changes to Luz, Amity and Eda looking for the fisherman, Gus and Willow.
"Where are they?" Amity asked
"It's hard to tell with so much rain coming down!" Eda yelled
Appa is shown descending, hitting the water.
"Come on, Appa! The boat! There!" Luz said
Lilith is shown spotting Appa.
"The Avatar!" Lilith yelled
"What do you want to do, sir?" Jee asked
"Let her go. We need to get this ship to safety." Lilith said
"Then we must head directly into the eye of the storm." Kaldo said
Scene changes to show Gus, Willow and the fisherman rocking back and forth on the boat.
"I'm too young to die!" Gus yelled
"Oh get a grip, Gus! But I agree with you!" Willow yelled
"I'm not, but I still don't wanna!" the Fisherman yelled
Luz shows up. She jumps down onto the boat. As a pole is falling down, Luz brings up four spouts of water, splitting the pole in half. After the pole splits in half, Gus, Willow and the fisherman are shown hugging each other. A rope is seen.
"Hang onto the rope." Luz said
The fisherman, Gus and Willow do so. Appa starts flying again. The rope swings up, making Gus, Willow and the fisherman land on the saddle. A big wave hits the gang underwater. Everyone is shown floating away from Appa. Luz goes into the Avatar State and saves everyone. They all go back to the cave where the fisherman's wife is. Scene changes to Lilith and Kaldo together.
"Kaldo, I'm sorry." Lilith said
"Your apology is accepted." Kaldo said
Scene changes to Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow, Eda, Appa and the fisherman at the cave. The fisherman's wife runs up to the fisherman and hugs him.
"Oh, you're alive! You owe this girl an apology!" the Fisherman's Wife said
"He doesn't have to apologize." Luz said
"What if, instead of an apology, I give her a free fish and we call it even?" the Fisherman asked
"Actually, I don't eat meat." Luz said
"Fish ain't meat!" the Fisherman said
"Seriously, you're still going to pay me, right?" Willow asked
"You're still on that getting paid thing?" Gus asked
"You gotta get your priorities together" Eda said
The fisherman hands Willow a fish which made Gus and Eda laugh from seeing it. Luz and Amity are shown in a corner of the cave.
"Amity, I think you were right before. I'm done dwelling on the past." Luz said
"Really?" Amity asked
"I can't make guesses about what would have turned out if I hadn't run away. I'm here now and I'm going to make the most out of it." Luz said
"I don't think you're gonna have those nightmares anymore." Amity said
"And if you weren't here now, well, I guess I wouldn't be either. Thank you for saving my life, Avatar." the Fisherman said
"Do you hear that? It stopped raining." Willow said
"She's right, look" Eda said pointing outside the cave
Everyone goes outside. Appa shakes raindrops off himself, splashing everyone.
"Appa!" Luz said
