Crabapple Cove Maine - 1953
6 months after the End of the Korean War
Hawkeye Pierce's home.
( Margaret's POV )
Well here I stand on the front porch of the home of the man I left behind in Korea, I never thought I'd find my standing here doing what I'm about to do ( especially given the rough way our so-called relationship started ) But so much for that, if someone would have told me a year ago that I would have ended up falling in love with Hawkeye Pierce, I would have laughed in their face.
However people change and grow, especially Hawkeye, he changed from the man he was when he first arrived at the 4077, to a tender sweet loving compassionate man. I guess maybe he was that all along he just kept that part hidden from the world, and I got lucky and ended up seeing the real him.
I noticed more of a change in him after our night in that abandoned hut, he started to act differently, and over time I felt I was seeing the real him, then suddenly one night a tiny baby girl was left outside The Swamp, and Hawkeye took to her immediately. Deep down I know he wanted to keep her, I know I did. I also know that's why the mother's actions on the bus affected him so badly - he just couldn't understand how a mother could end her baby's life when he couldn't give up one that was left.
And now here I stand on his doorstep, hoping beyond hope that I've made the right decision by coming here the way I have, and doing what I've done. Here goes nothing.
( Hawkeyes POV )
Well that's unusual for a quiet Saturday to hear knocking on the front door, especially when Dad's out with his fishing buddies, we've not had much company since I returned from Korea, that's my fault. I've not felt up to seeing anyone. Not even that pretty nurse that keeps flirting with me at the hospital.
She's just not the nurse that I long for, no one is. There will never be another one like her, well I should probably answer the door. I get up from my comfortable place on the sofa and head down the long hallway between the den and front door, before I open it, I take a look out the peephole.
My eyes must be playing tricks on me, she can't really be standing there, there's only one good reason I'm seeing Margaret Houlihan on my front porch, I'm cracking up again. Letting out a deep breath I open the door.
"Margaret?"
"Surprise."
"Boy, I'll say, how and why."
"Hawk, can we talk?"
"Yes sure come in."
"Um, just a minute, I've got to get something out of the car first."
"Sure, you need any help?"
"No, I'll only be a minute."
"Fine, I'll leave the door open." Hawkeye made his way from the doorway back to the den, sensing that Margaret needed some space when she came back inside.
After reaching her car, she opened the back door, reached in, and took out the small little bundle, holding her close as she shut the door and headed back up toward the house.
Her nerves started to take over as she stood there in the opening, maybe she should have thought this over once more before just showing up here. Well, it was now too late for that, or was it? She could always turn around and run, and he'd never be the wiser.
Well, too late he'd stepped back out into the hallway, looking at her with those piercing blue eyes, those eyes that she could lose herself in.
"My My Margaret who have we here." Suddenly he stopped talking as he really looked at the little girl. "How?"
"I adopted her with help from Father Mulcahy. After I left the 8063rd I knew I had to try and find her. Otherwise, I'd regret it for the rest of my life. Hawk she made such an impact on all our lives, I just couldn't leave her there. Well, Father Mulcahy went to the monastery, while I waited back at the orphanage, it seemed like he was gone for hours, but when he returned he brought her with him. For the first time in a while, I felt alive again. Col Potter pulled strings so that I could adopt her and bring her home with me, he said it was easier now than when the war had been going on."
"Margaret I'm stunned."
"Hawk I'm sorry if..." He placed his fingers on her lips to silence her
"Let me get this out, yes I'm stunned, it's a good stunned, no wait a great stunned, no that's not right either, a fantastic stunned. Yeah, that sounds better, and I'm happy for you. And for her, she deserves to be anywhere but there. Do you mind if I hold her?"
Margaret shook her head no, and handed over the little girl to Hawkeye, She immediately reached for his nose, just like she'd done back at the 4077, and he smiled at her. "Well hello there little one, long time no see, I've missed you."
"Hawk, there's more to the story."
"Oh?"
"Yes, see in order to bring her, I had to provide her father's name. I told them that you are her father, or will be her father."
"What?"
"I'm sorry, I should have wired you. I'm sorry."
"Margaret I'm not mad, you know how I feel about her. Now the question is, where do we go from here? And what's my daughter's name?"
Margaret smiled, "Officially it's Kim - Lee Pierce."
"It's fitting for her. Dad is going to be shocked, happy but shocked. Well little Kim - Lee, welcome to the good ole US of A." Hawkeye, looked up at Margaret, "Did you name her Kim-Lee?"
"No that's what the monks named her, I didn't want to change it, I felt it might confuse her."
"Yes, it probably would." Hawkeye stopped talking when he heard the front door open, "Stay here, I'll be right back." He said as he got up and headed back down the hallway towards the door. "Hi ya dad." He smiled as he greeted his father.
"Hello, did I come home at a bad time?"
"No, No, actually it's perfect timing, I have someone I want you to meet, Can we talk for a minute outside first?"
"Sure son" Daniel followed Hawkeye out to the front porch. He stood and watched his son start to pace around. This was something that he'd been doing a lot of since he'd gotten back from Korea.
"Dad, do you remember me telling you about Margaret Houlihan?"
"Oh yes. I recall reading about her in your letters home."
"Well, Dad guess what! She's here!"
"Oh?"
Hawkeye ran his hand through his black hair, "Yeah Dad, and she's not alone, she well, you see she, she brought our daughter with her."
"You have a daughter? I have a granddaughter. Hawkeye?"
"Wait a minute it's not what you're thinking? I told you about the baby girl that was left at the camp, the one we all tried to get sent over here."
"Yes, I remember you talking about her, how much it broke your heart to leave her at that monastery."
"Margaret felt the same way, the part I left out was what happened when we returned later that night."
Flashback to Korea
Early 1953 4077
Hawkeye, B.J, Charles, and Father Mulcahy pulled back into the camp, all 4 officers sat there thinking about what they had just done to that little girl, the life they had just sentenced her to, all because she'd been born of mixed parents, it wasn't her fault.
The men each headed off towards their tents, all except Hawkeye, all he felt like doing was going for a walk he didn't know where to go, or what to do. His heart was hurting that sweet little Angel, had stirred up feelings in him he wasn't expecting.
He stopped suddenly when he realized he was standing outside Margaret's tent, he raised his hand and knocked on the door, "Who's there?"
"Margaret it's Hawkeye, can I come in." He backed up when the door opened, and her tear-stained face came into his line of sight, not thinking he pulled her into his arms, and he walked them both back inside and over to her small bed sitting them both down. He pulled her close letting her cry on his shoulder, while he stroked her hair. "Hawk I miss her."
"So do I, I lost part of myself tonight."
They both sat there weeping for the sweet little girl that had brought them so much love and joy in such a short amount of time. It wasn't long before they gave in to the feelings that they were feeling, getting lost in each other's bodies.
"That's the clean version and now Margaret is here and she brought our little angel with her."
Daniel nodded his head."Hawk are you ready to be a father?"
"You know if you'd asked me this 6 months ago, I'd said no, Now that I've given myself time, I want this, I felt lost after we gave her up, I think that's why the events on the bus hit me hard, I couldn't understand how she could snuff out a precious life, when I couldn't, bring myself to leave one behind, I felt so riddled with guilt over what my actions had forced her todo."
"Son you did not force that woman to take her own child's life, just like you did not force that woman to give up her child, both women made choices that they have to live with."
"Dad you don't know what it's like over there, what these people have to do in order to just survive, I've seen it, Margaret has seen it. That's why I'm happy beyond words that our little angel is out of there and here. She's going to have a chance at a real life with a mommy and a daddy that loves her."
"Son as long as you're happy, I'm happy for you, now About we go inside so I can meet the newest Pierce and her mother."
Hawkeye nodded his head and led his dad into the house and down the hallway to the den where he'd left Margaret and Kim-Lee. As soon as she'd seen them both walk in she stood up off the sofa and started to head to them. But Daniel motioned for her to remain where she was at.
"Madam there is no need for you to rise and greet me. That's what a gentleman does in the presence of a lady." He said as he made his way over taking Margaret's hand and placing a light kiss on the top.
Margaret felt herself blushing, now she saw why Hawkeye was as charming as he is, it had to be a Pierce family trait. Beaming she said- "It's a honor to get to meet you, Dr. Pierce."
Daniel shook his head. "No No none of that Doctor Pierce stuff here, I'm simply Daniel or Dad, whatever you feel comfortable with, now who's this little lady over here."
"My turn !" Hawkeye piped up. He scooped up his daughter and walked over next to his dad. "Dad this is little Kim-Lee, Kim this is your grandfather."
Daniel stood there looking at the gorgeous little girl lying in his son's arms. Tears started flowing from his eyes. "Son she's beautiful, she's a beautiful little girl. Margaret thank you for bringing her to us, you are an amazing woman, my son is extremely lucky to have you in his life."
"You are very kind to say that, Daniel. However I feel that I'm the lucky one, ( she said as she looked over to Hawkeye ) I found your son in the last place I thought I'd find my soulmate."
Margaret and Hawkeye locked eyes at each other. In that one moment, they knew nothing nor no one would be able to ever come between them again. Not even ole ferret face!!!
Okay here is chapter 1, hope you like it!!! If so please review. There's still more to come!!!!!
