Shattered Hope
By NoobiePro1234
Frisk opened their eyes. What had happened? They were with their friends on the surface just a few moments ago. They tried to sit up straight, but they couldn't move. Suddenly, their body was being lifted.. by none other than themselves, except Frisk wasn't trying to stand up. Their body just… moved. Without any control, their body was walking left and right, like someone was pulling the strings connected to a puppet. As desperately as Frisk tried to regain control, they couldn't, and their body was moving around against their own will. The environment around them was extremely familiar. It was the first place they ended up in after they had fallen down into the Underground. What was happening to them?
Soon, whoever was in control of their body made them go through the door into the ruins, and once again met a golden flower. "Howdy!" Said the flower. "I'm Flowey, Flowey the flower!" It was a line that was way too familiar to them. They clearly remembered what had happened when they met him for the first time. It wasn't very pleasant. "You're new to the Underground, aren't you? Golly, you must be so confused. Someone's got to teach you how things work around here. I guess little old me will have to do. Ready? Here we go!" But this time, something different happened. A translucent menu appeared in front of them. A black menu containing a box with Flowey on top of it, a strange white text reading "PLAYER" at the lower-left corner, a yellow bar at the lower centra with text such as "LV 1", "20/20" and "HP", and four options: "FIGHT", "ACT", "ITEM" and "MERCY". Flowey then continued to speak about their SOUL and gaining LOVE. Something weird was happening on the menu. A red heart had appeared as Flowey talked about their SOUL, moving around at the same time and pace with their body. Additionally, The "Flowey" in the menu had a speech bubble containing words which matched exactly what he had just said!
After blabbering, Flowey proceeded to ask Frisk to catch as many "friendliness pellets" as they could as white, spinning petals appeared both in reality and on the menu. Frisk knew exactly what was happening, but whoever was in control clearly didn't. The heart ran directly into the sharp petals, and the same happened with Frisk's body. Immediately, sharp pain shot through where they'd been hit, but Frisk could do nothing to ease the pain as they weren't in control. Warm blood was flowing out of their wound, yet the one in control did nothing to stop it, as if they didn't care about Frisk at all. The originally completely yellow bar was now mostly red, and the text next to the bar now read "HP 1/20". The face on the real Flowey and the one on the menu both turned distorted and terrifying. "YOU IDIOT," the creepy talking flower said, "in this world, it's KILL or BE KILLED." A ring of white petals (or bullets) appeared out of thin air, surrounding Frisk. "Die." Flowey said, with their face taking a calmer yet equally terrifying expression. Suddenly, a fireball appeared and fired towards Flowey, catching him off-guard and bursting him far away.
A goat-like figure appeared, along with her sprite on the menu. Toriel. The loving and kind goat mother who liked baking pies, hearing puns and learning about snails. Frisk remembered every moment with her, from the time they met in the ruins until at the end of the struggle with Asriel. Yet she seemed to have no memory of them. "What a terrible creature, torturing such a poor, innocent youth. Ah, do not be afraid, my child. I'm Toriel, caretaker of the ruins. I pass through this place everyday to see if anyone has fallen down. You are the first human to come here in a long time. Come! I'll guide you through the catacombs." As they entered the next room, which was just a transition to the ruins, Frisk noticed something unusual. There was a golden star, hovering just under the tree in the middle of the room. Their "puppet master" drew them closer to the star and finally touched it. Another menu appeared, being just a black chat box. It talked about the shade in the room filling them with DETERMINATION. After that, another text box appeared, which had a fair amount of scattered text. The most notable was "EMPTY", some underscores and again, some options: "SAVE" and "RETURN". Their red souls appeared again, this time on the option. As a "click" played, the text turned yellow and some new words that said "FILE SAVED" appeared before the menu vanished. After that weird encounter, Toriel guided Frisk through the ruins, solving traps on the way and explaining them to Frisk one by one. As they approached a dummy, Toriel said, "As a human living in the Underground, monsters may attack you…" and continued to talk about being prepared for the situation and striking up a friendly conversation as to stall time for Toriel to arrive.
As Frisk came face-to-face with the dummy, the bigger mysterious menu appeared again, with the dummy's sprite on top of the box this time instead of Flowey or Toriel. Frisk remembered that the dummy didn't attack and that they at last talked to the dummy, following Toriel's advice. As the dummy stood dead still, an option box lit up in bright yellow, with their pure red soul replacing the icon. The "FIGHT" button. As two "click" sounds rang in their ears, a pattern appeared inside the box as a bar flashing black and white swept through. Another click sound rang as the bar hit near the centre of the pattern. Their arm, holding a stick they'd found on the ground, uncontrollably raised and slashed the dummy as a different, slashing sound began playing. Frisk stared in shock as the durable-looking dummy got decimated by the stick and turned into mere dust in a matter of seconds. "Ahh, the dummies are not for fighting!" Toriel said in a disapproving tone. After some disbelief, Frisk was attacked by a Froggit. The frog's adorable attacks weren't particularly hard to dodge when THEY had control of their body, and proved to be the same for whoever was behind the scenes controlling them. Frisk hoped that the "puppeteer" would SPARE, but instead, the "FIGHT" option was once again selected, and the monster was also turned to dust. Although their body didn't move, they felt like their knees dropped to the ground, and tears were dropping from their eyes, yet their actual body was doing nothing but walking forward and continuing its killing spree.
Soon, their body had reunited with Toriel, leaving behind a trail of dust in the ruins. The goat mother, having no clue about its genocide, kindly invited it in, and treated it kindly, offering a soft, warm bed and pie to the serial killer, while Frisk was still shocked from their body's actions. Everyone who had been kind to them in the past, vanquished by none other than Frisk themself, using their dusty hands. Meanwhile, the puppeteer had written the words "home" on a paper, repeatedly pointing at it. Toriel had declined the request of going "home" a few times, before getting irritated and tried to destroy the exit, matching Frisk's memory. The fight for "freedom" had begun, and the menu had appeared again. Toriel used fireballs to attack, which put Frisk in agony every time one hit, which was a lot of times. Toriel managed to withstand a somewhat large amount of hits. For once, Frisk thought Toriel could put them out of that misery. The bar on the menu was almost empty once again, filling up with the colour red and the text on its sides reading "HP 04/32". But their hopes and prayers were shattered along with Toriel's soul. Her last words were, "Y... you...really hate me that much? Now I see who I was protecting by keeping you here. Not you… But them! Ha... ha…" Those words hurt more than every attack that had hit Frisk before combined. 'I… am a murderer… I killed everyone…' Frisk thought. They prayed for someone to come and save them. For someone to come and END them.
But nobody came.
This is the end of Ch. 1! This is my first fanfiction so it might be relatively shorter than other stories. Nevertheless, I hope you like it :] Also, thanks for reading!
P.S. in case you were wondering, these are ACTUAL dialogues from the game, except for Frisk's. I might have modified them for a bit but they are all real and came from my research about the dialogues!
If you have any suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment. I will gladly read them!
(Finally, this was an original idea. Others might think I copied, but I respect other creators and have, and will, never do anything like that.)
