Wilhelm had been out all night, and decided to skip school while he was at it. When the rain came, he decided to return to the dorms.
That was a shitshow, Wilhelm thought about the previous night as he pulled into the school parking lot.
Wilhelm got out of his car and continued on foot to his dorm.Wilhelm walked through the school yard and through the entrance to the dormitory grounds. He then stopped dead in his tracks after viewing the scene in front of him: a huge crowd of students standing in the yard and Kate on the roof looking ready to jump.
He only stopped for a second.
"Get the fuck out of the way!!" Wilhelm yelled as he sprinted towards the door.
Locked. Fuck!
He ran to the next one. Locked. Wilhelm didn't stop for a second. He ran back into the yard and kicked over a trash can, dumped it out, and threw it into the closet window. No hesitation. Wilhelm sprinted towards the window and climbed in. He hadn't even noticed the glass stuck in his hands, arms, and his back. He opened the door of the dorm room and ran straight to the stairwell.
Wilhelm moved so fast with such little thought of himself that he hadn't noticed how slippery all the stairs were. That proved to be a fatal mistake. On the third flight of stairs, Wilhelm slipped forward at such a great speed that he hadn't the time to throw out his arms. He hit his head on the top step and fell down the stairs. It took a few seconds to realize what had happened. He strained himself to get up, but couldn't.
God damnit. Not now.
Max appeared from seemingly out of nowhere.
"Will? Are you okay?"
"No. Not at all."
"Let me help you."
"No! Get up there now. There's no time. I'll get help for myself later. Go!"
Wilhelm woke up hours later to the sounds of a heartbeat monitor and the downpour of rain from outside.
"You're awake."
"Barely," Wilhelm replied.
"I'm glad they let us in the room together," Kate said.
"What happened?"
"You hit your head and fell down the stairs trying to save me. Max told me you were hurt and I immediately stepped down from the ledge. The doctors said you may have died if that step had hit your temple. You broke a rib, too."
"Why, Kate?"
"I couldn't see the next day."
"Did you not feel like you were cared about enough? Did I not care about you enough?"
"No, that wasn't it."
"What was it?"
"The video, Nathan, my mother almost disowning me. Everything."
"Were you about to jump with my necklace on?"
"No, I.. left it."
"So that I could wear it around knowing that my friend rejected a gift meant to show her how much I cared, and then jumped off a building? So that my heart would shatter every time I put it on?"
Wilhelm buried his eyes in his hands and let out a sigh.
"I'm sorry," Kate said, tears streaming down her face.
"I forgive you, Kate. I'm here for you. I'll always be here for you. I'm not angry.. you scared me to my core. And now I'm in the hospital with you. I don't know what I would've done if I woke up in this hospital room alone. I couldn't.. Kate, I..."
Wilhelm trailed off for a few seconds, then went silent. He lost consciousness again.
