Grayson Lockwood, District One Male.
They were out once more at day break. Hopefully this day would be filled with action after the silent day they had yesterday. He kept an eye out as they broke into pairs, each one pairing with their district partner. Flare was leading them, silent and stoic as ever.
"We should think of a plan, for when it's time for us to go our separate ways." He thought out as they stopped against the trees for a break. Biting into a cracker, he turned towards his sister.
"Yeah," Flare spoke softly, "They'll probably go off on their own, but I was hoping we could stay together for a little longer?"
His heart warmed slightly, and a smile appeared on his face.
"Of course! I wouldn't want anything else. I meant what I said in the interviews. I would do anything to keep you safe Flare and to make sure you return home."
"I know, I just don't want anything to happen to you Gray."
He grinned at her, and after they were done eating they took off again.
It was only a couple more minutes before he spoke again. "You know, I've never apologized for how mom and dad treat you. I know that it affects you Flare."
"It's fine, you've always been the favorite one," She scoffed as she turned to face him.
"I didn't mean to become the favorite!" He cried out, throwing his hands up.
"But you let them dote all over you Grayson! You never tried to stop it from happening. They didn't give a single fuck about me and they still dont. All they care about is their sweet little Grayson and how he's going to bring pride and honor home by winning the Games. They'll be happy to see me dead!" She yelled, eyes burning with rage.
How long had she felt like this?
He took a careful step forward. "They might not care but I still do. You're still my twin and I will always love you." Grayson spoke softly, setting a hand on her arm.
She rolled her eyes and shrugged off his touch. "Come on, let's keep on."
He could only nod as they continued walking, snow crunching beneath their feet with each step they took.
A canon sounded, followed by another.
Finally,
Delaware Spires, District Six Male.
He and Kassidy had gone out the previous day to fill up their water containers as well as tried to hunt for any animals. They had no such luck but they did have several parachutes of food items delivered by their sponsors. Of course, when they got back most of it was gone.
Someone had stolen from them.
How stupid was he to leave their things unattended. Rage filled him and as he moved to leave the room again, he saw the male from Eight, a smirk on his face.
"Someone stole your sponsor gifts?" He asked, noticing Delaware's face.
"Yeah, how'd you know?" He asked, leaning against the door as Kassidy came up next to him.
"I saw that girl from Three, December take off an hour or two ago with them in her possession." He shrugged. "She seemed like she knew what she was doing, so if you want them back or at least revenge I would go after her." Sterling said.
Delaware narrowed his eyes at the man, but couldn't sense any tone that said that Eight was lying to both of them. He finally nodded.
"Where did she take off?" Kassidy spoke up, moving closer to Sterling, an alluring smile on her face.
"North, heading towards the lake from what I could tell."
"Thank you, for telling us. Next time I see you, it won't end like that."
"Noted, good luck." Sterling took off back down the hall.
He let the door shut and turned to his district partner.
"We go after her. She can't just think she can get away with this after all." Kassidy said, determination lacing her words.
Del nodded, already moving to gather the rest of their belongings. He slipped a knife into her hand. "Just in case," He said softly, eyes on hers. She smiled softly at him, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
They had talked everything through the previous night as they tried to sleep. In the long run, none of them really exactly regretted the night before the reaping. Who knew, maybe something would have happened with them in another universe.
"I know. Hopefully it won't be used but I'm prepared for a fight."
They left the room quietly and went back out into the cold afternoon air. He took in a breath. The cold air woke him a bit more and they both started to head north. Nothing was spoken between the two of them, Delaware too lost in his quest to get their items back.
Footsteps started to appear and what looked like drops of blood started to show as well. He nudged Kassidy's shoulder, pointing at the snow beneath them
"Took the two of you long enough." And the female from Three came forward towards them, a knife in each of her hands.
"It seems like you didn't luck out in a fight. What happened, you let your guard down?" Del snarked at her, taking a few measured steps towards her, running a hand through his hair. His own grip on the small knife in his hand tightened.
"He barely got a scrape on me," She smirked, head tilting to the side at them. "He was weak and I was able to take him out with no problem. Just like the two of you."
"Or, you can return our things and we all leave with our lives." He arched his brow. "It doesn't have to be like the way you think it does."
"But it does, and you forget the one thing you should never forget while out here."
"Which is what?" Her arm moved up, but he was too distracted by the look on her face. It was blank except for the all but murderous smirk on her face. A flash of silver went by him and he could hear the sickening thud of a knife embedding itself into flesh.
A gasp and then a thud.
He whipped around, there was a knife in Kassidy's chest. Her breathing was already slowing, and he knelt down in the snow next to her taking her hand in his. He brushed her hair back from her forehead.
"It's okay." She reassured him through gasps of air. "At least you have a better shot of going home. You're gonna make it big out there Del. They'll see you for the amazing musician that you are. They'll see."
"No, there has to be something or someone that can help you." He cried out, tears already falling.
"No," she faintly shook her head. "And it's alright. I made my peace with death once I was selected. I'm just thankful that I got to do it with you Delaware. Thank you for the last amazing week of my life. I won't forget you."
"I won't forget you and I won't let anyone else forget you either Kass. I promise."
A peaceful smile graced her lips one last time. "That's good." Her chest stilled and she breathed out for the last time. He faintly heard Kassidy's cannon sounding in the distance.
December was still there when he stood up, rage in his eyes.
"You forgot the most important rule out here Del," She said the last word mockingly. "It's the Hunger Games. You don't talk yourself out of these situations. It's kill or be killed." The last knife in her hand was flung at him and he could only watch in horror, too stricken with grief to think about moving. It landed in his chest just like it did with Kassidy.
He hit the ground, and there must have been poison on it as he felt himself growing weaker and weaker.
"Last thing before you die. Sterling played the both of you. He was the one to steal your supplies. Not me."
He watched as her form retreated back into the forest silently.
Breathing got harder and his eyes started to slip close. He struggled to keep them open but they closed one last time and his heart came to a stop.
She was right.
He wasn't able to talk himself out of this one.
Kassidy Kane, District Six Female.
The knife hitting her was a surprise but she should have figured December would have gone for her. She could feel blood slipping down her chest and onto the snow beneath her.
Del was there, her hand in hers. She reassured him that it was okay, and at least she made it this far.
And she wasn't lying when she said she was grateful to have the last week with him with her. Sure, she never expected for them both to go into the arena but there was no one else she would want by her side during it.
She just wished that she could have known him more before this.
Before she was chosen.
Perhaps in another life.
One with no games and they were free to live their life how she wanted.
With one last smile, Kassidy exhaled her last breath and all was gone.
She just hoped that Del managed to escape.
and breathe.
i never expected the games to go this way, but it felt fitting for the two to go out now. i loved having both of them and i wish i would have done more this them. they've been nothing but a blast to write and i hope you enjoyed them as much as i did. anyways onto the fallen.
