Chapter 18
Screams
Three weapons. They'd gathered three weapons. And, if he was honest with himself, he was feeling pretty good.
Anxious, too.
I guess those two can mix, right?
Grabbing the fourth one would be the last step before rescuing his sister. The sword's home lay just a few hundred meters away, glowing in an enchanting orange hue. The volcano rumbled, sending unease through to his very core. I'm comin' for y'u, sis.
Nya's scream ripped through his subconscious. Jolted upright, cold sweat covered his body. Her tear-stained face stared back at him, crying out. He didn't get her, now matter how far he reached out.
Shaking, he went to the sink. Cold water dripped from his hair as he washed the fear from his subconscious. Two-hundred forty-seven days. They didn't find her. That night at the temple was the closest he had gotten to freeing his sister, and he had failed her. The dreams made sure to remind him of that.
"Kai?" Kai looked up; Cole stood behind him in the mirror; a good distance away, Kai could still make out the concerned look on his face.
"What do you want?" Kai felt himself shaking.
"You gotta get some sleep." Kai put his hands on the sink, head down and tilted.
"Yeah. Sure thing."
"We're gonna save her, Kai." A beat.
"Yeah." Cole frowned slightly, but said nothing. Kai heard the rustling as the black ninja crawled back into his bunk. He faced himself in the mirror.
All he saw was his sister's face as her broken scream tore him apart.
