Lloyd groaned. He pulled the pillow over his head as the gong echoed throughout the dormitory. The sound of feet clamoring on the wooden floor agitated him. Class was overrated. But he didn't want to get in trouble with the dean again.
He got dressed and headed to the breakfast hall. Breakfast (if he could call it that) hit his nose with a pungent odor as he made his way down the rickety old stairs. The breakfast hall greeted him with a hundred boys and girls running about like a mosh pit trying to fill their trays and find their seats. When the lunch lady dropped some slop into his bowl, his lip turned up in disgust. He went to find an empty table.
He landed on the ground with a thud where his chair was supposed to be. Boys laughed around him as his slop soaked his uniform.
"Whatcha gonna do, Lloyd?"
"You gonna cry for your daddy?"
Tears smarted in Lloyd's eyes as his face turned bright red with anger. He hated acting like a child. What would his dad think?
Hot blood pooled in his belly. He stood up, slop falling to the floor. What would his dad do?
He swung his fist.
He sat in an old chair as the dean's clock threatended to put him to sleep. His swollen eye and throbbing head kept him awake.
"Lloyd Garmadon - in trouble for starting a fight in the cafeteria."
"They started it!" The principal gave him a look as if to say I've heard this all before.
"Lloyd, you're going to be suspended."
"What?! It's a school for bad boys! What did I do?!"
The dean quirked his eyebrow. Taking a slip of paper from his desk, he put a big red stamp in the middle.
When the moon winked at him from between his bedroom blinds, he thought he might like to join it - far away from this place. Alone... and free.
