Two was almost silent on the journey home, each one having something to think about.

Scott and Kayo's relationship had only really come as a surprise to Alan, but then at his age that hadn't come as a surprise to his older brothers.

No one had foreseen this, though. Not Kayo's relationship with the Hood, certainly. And the fallout from that was still occurring. Gordon was right though. They couldn't help Scott and Kayo with anything more than love and support.

And breakfast.

Alan sat in his usual co-pilot seat practically hugging the large thermos cooler full of Farmer's Breakfast. They had stayed longer than usual after John's phone call, Virgil downing more coffee than was strictly necessary as he and the owner's daughter caught up. It had been a while since they had had free enough time to do more than dash in and pick up the best breakfast in the world.

The terrible two had sniggered over that. A lot. Virgil and Abby had both rolled their eyes at the sibling ribbing that they were both used to. Eventually John had sent through the signal and they had made a move.

For once Alan wasn't sure what to expect when they got home.

Kayo had woken up when her bladder complained that it couldn't wait any longer. It hadn't surprised her that Grandma had gone, but she was a little hurt that she was still alone. The sudden beeping that came from her comm told her that she wasn't quite as alone as she thought.

'John?'

'Good morning, Kayo.'

'EOS. Is everything alright?'

'Yes. John asked me to tell you when you woke up that breakfast is on its way.'

'Thank you, EOS.'

She climbed out of bed and straight into a number of yoga poses, but her efforts were half-hearted and she gave up after just a couple of moves and headed for the shower.

EOS' roundel was waiting for her when she came back but the AI waited for her to dress before speaking again.

'May I ask you something, Kayo?'

'You can ask, EOS.'

'You and Scott have been acting out of character. I would like to know why.'

'Ah. Would you mind if I answer this another time? Things are a little raw at the moment.'

'I do not understand but I will ask later. Would after breakfast be appropriately later?'

Kayo laughed. It was slightly bitter and self-mocking, but there was a hint of genuineness behind it. John's erstwhile daughter was ever curious and she knew EOS didn't mean any harm, but Kayo definitely wasn't in the right headspace for this kind of conversation.

'I will let you know, EOS, but it probably won't be for a couple of days at the earliest.'

'Ok. John is in the kitchen and he has your tea ready.'

'Thank you. Please tell him I'll be in shortly.'

EOS disappeared and Kayo composed herself to face her brothers.

Fortunately it was only John. He was sitting alone, two steaming cups of Jasmine tea on the table. She slid in beside him and he knocked shoulders with her but continued to write on his pad. Kayo appreciated his quite presence and it helped to ground her.

There was no mistaking the sound of Two's engines and Kayo put her cup down and centred herself. John knocked her shoulder again and she glanced at him. He smiled and she felt immediately better.

It didn't take long for her brothers to invade the kitchen, and pretty soon the room was full of the sounds of family and the smell of good food. Her stomach rumbled.

She didn't miss Virgil disappearing to go get Scott, not the dishevelled look of man when he appeared, obviously he'd only just got up. Kayo watched him take his usual place at the table.

For a moment their eyes met and he offered her a tentative smile before Alan claimed his attention, and Kayo's eyes softened as she watched Scott with his family. The meal felt like their normal ones, and as they all ate and talked she frequently stole glances at Scott and pretended not to notice when he glanced at her too.

Still there was that undercurrent present, and as breakfast was cleared away and various members of the family left to do their own things until the barbeque they'd decided to have for dinner until it was just her and Scott.

He cleared his throat and smiled at her.

'Kayo, I think we should talk.'
