Coming to a stop above the wall, he ignores the materialization of Death beside him as he morbidly watches as people run some even climbing the debris that lay at wake from the giant titans destruction, the echoing footfalls of the titans meeting his ear even from this high up.
"Mast-Little One, welcome to the beginning" The velvety voice of death caressed his ears, hesitantly dragging his eyes away from the scene below him. He doesn't want to look away from the threat he perceives despite the atrocities being committed below him,
"What in Merlin's name did you drag me into?" When he thought of reuniting with Sirius he didn't expect to have to fight literal hell just to see him.
"master, I told you, this is the land of paradise, subjects of Yimir liv-"
"I know that part, but why didn't you tell me that these things can grow to the size of that! I thought you meant troll size at least."
"There are a few that are troll size, master"
He feels his eye twitch "those that size are among the smallest ones"
"Is there a reason you're here?" The embodiment of Death gives him an amused look before turning his gaze below towards the chaos making a flush climb up his neck in his stupidity.
"Truthfully, I wanted to check on you" startling Harry as he feels the genuine concern, "l know how, what did your precious Hermione call it, ah, your saving people thing. I just wanted to make sure you aren't tearing yourself up about this"
"I'm honestly terrified of how calm I am" he admits, he hasn't felt the urge to save all these people below sure he wants to, but logic he realizes he can only do so much and what can he do immediately right now anyway.
"That might be a side effect of becoming my master, as death is neutral, and deaths master can't be too guided by their emotions, rest assured your still capable of your human emotions, it's just as a precaution towards the universes themselves as you could potentially consume galaxies in your wrath"
So, he has a leech on his emotions? He doesn't want to be tied anymore than he already has been, both in life and in death.
"Little one, your not nor ever will you be caged, your my master, it's laughable to think of anyone or being trying to control you, as I stated think of it more like a self sufficient Occlumency shield."
"Oh, well I'm pants at that so thanks" he states sarcastically but stops as he feels the gentle probe as the walls of his meager shields merge with the stronger sentient one, he lets out a scowl realizing the walls are death themselves.
"Why didn't you just say you were going to doing it yourself?"
"Little one, you really think I'll let anything other than myself guard you? And I didn't want to make you distrust me, by assuming I was intentionally manipulating you, I was gonna reveal"
'Myself like this' the sudden voice of Death inside his head makes him almost fall off his broom if not for the expert grip and skillful handling he might have.
"A little warning next time" glaring at the place Death occupied speaking out loud despite himself.
'Sorry master, I couldn't not prank you, the opportunity presented itself' the mischievous entity replies before receding into nothingness, without the presence of Death, he has nothing to distract him from the chaos in front of him.
Looking at all the people dying makes him snarl in his mind, he doesn't like how useless he feels. He isn't one to let the feeling of hopelessness stop him, he's the one who does the impossible, the hero that makes nightmares stay away, he still feels his breath hitch at those words, that was the first time he felt like a hero, was being needed for no other reason than to keep his precious godchild save from his own thoughts. His mind fills with grief, as he realizes he left teddy.
he can't believe he's forgotten about his godson, he doesn't know how Teddy has reacted to his 'death', hopefully he doesn't take it too hard, though knowing how he felt with Sirius he hopes his godson doesn't do anything drastic, though he won't ever know.
'For teddy' he tells himself, he'll try to save these people despite the odds, because if he doesn't do something he'll never be able to face that boy again, if he ever gets the chance to.
'Little one, I don't know if you noticed but my strip of cloth has changed it's properties to be of more convenience for you. Since a cloak of the likes that you used in the Wizarding world would be as inconspicuous, they have taken the liberty to become a coat that provides the same effect, without the ability to shield more than one, fortunately they are interchangeable' The voice of Death makes him swerve clipping a bell on a tall tower making him realize how close he's gotten,he watches the titans below turn their gaze toward the gong sound in a curious fashion.
'Seriously?'
'No that's your dogfather'
That makes him want to almost let one of those titans devour him, he wonders if they'd change if he was eaten? With a shiver he'd rather not find out.
Flying a little higher but still close enough to find someone he can help, he just sees bodies upon bodies with those still alive groaning in agony. Giving those who can't be saved a silent apology as he sends the familiar green bolt towards them in mercy.
In retrospect he's glad that he can feel death helping him compartmentalize his emotions, he's not sure what he would have done if he still had his younger brazen self, he knows if he was younger even with the help from death this would have been too much.
Drifting throughout the desolate area of the Distric that is being terrorized, he almost starts to hate himself the more he's relieved to see no survivors among the death and destruction, he hates himself for not being able to do anything but send those he finds off to Deaths realm. He really wished he had taken the time to learn all those medical spells he's been on the receiving end of.
Watching as the giant being before his person, who he lowered into their view despite the stupidity of doing so, the things not even trying to look for him can't help but think of the Notice-Me-Not charm.
'Could it work, at least give them a chance to escape?' Is he willing to treat humans as a test subject?
'It's for the greater good', his traitorous mind whispers.
He's sounding like Dumbledore, and while he will always have a respect for the man, he can't help but resent him for all that he did to Harry by his actions, or inactions.
Seeing a couple of children huddled in a corner watching as their parents are being shared between two titans of smaller size, he's diving before he can even think, damn his weakness to kids.
He's not willing to test the chances of children. Gaining in on the ground he expertly shifts his broom to hover just as his feet are about to touch the cobbled pavement before zipping towards the children.
A diffindo leaves his lips as he reaches them.
The resulting sound of flesh being sliced as the two titans' heads are clipped off startle the dazed children as the steaming head of one rolls over to them, chunks of their mother still stuck between the monster's teeth.
Harry lets his gaze drop respectfully before asserting the three children, seemingly of various ages, he took the chance to unveil himself from his invisible cloak, finding it turning off at the simple thought.
"Hey, are you alright?"
The dead gaze of theirs don't do anything other than turn to him before turning back towards the remains of their parents.
"you must be so strong, to protect your siblings even when all you want to do is run" he addresses the oldest while crouching in front of them. Though before he can inquire any further stomping from the opening of the ally is felt and heard. Cursing his luck he spins on his heel pulling his wand out he sees one of the two titans has rejuvenated.
'how resilient are these titans?'
With that thought he sends a bombarda at the monster watching as the thing blasts away it's upper body spraying as it implodes, he lets him arm down turning towards the children his eyes widen is horror a Titan towering over the buildings alley casting a shadow reaches and grabs the children with a satisfied bellow.
Time slows down in his mind as he rapidly flicks his wand sending what? He doesn't know, just wanting to save the three with everything he has, he watches as the spell races toward the hands with the children in its graspes. The resulting effect is instant, the being freezes as it seems to jolt them it starts to disintegrate before his eyes, the building it's leaning over indulging into the steam.
he sprints towards the children desperate for them to not be affected by the spell, passing through the steam he sees their unconscious bodies lying motionless on the ground, stumbling onto his knees he practically feels Death strain themselves as they attempt to reign in his overflow of emotions.
He failed.
he doesn't realize it but any Titan near his radius instantly started to combust into steam, if death didn't get a hold on their master's emotions, the hallows would have acted out of their master perceived intent and would have caused the whole race of Eldians to have vanished in his master's misplaced anger.
"Master, they are free now, this world isn't for children, not at this stage at the least '' Death tries to soothe their wayward master knowing that they can't truly understand the grief he's filtering to a stable level.
They knew their master wasn't going to succeed, but he truly needs to understand he can't save everyone if he's to better the multiverse as a whole, they don't want their master to get disillusioned with the fact that he can prevent Death, as cynical as it sounds his master needed to learn his lesson.
Thought that won't stop them from ensuring the children their master failed to save are greeted with a great afterlife, it's the least they can do for their master, knowing how much the man they've adored since the first time they saw Harry as a baby, when his mother took his place willingly, tho the baby's gaze never showed unease when they took his mothers soul. And for that they'll always strive to keep their precious Harry content as they're able.
"Did they suffer?" Harry asks as he cradles the little one's face wondering if he was just a second sooner would he have been able to stop the Titan from crushing the children.
"No they didn't your spell saved them from experiencing any pain, it seams the spell you used is a combination of an incinerating charm and your killing curse"
"I created an even more diabolical spell!" He can't believe he did that, not counting those he killed out of mercy as being evil, but to take those childrens life, even accidentally…
"Master they would have died regardless, you should be grateful you made it painless this time."
"I should be grateful-" he stops himself knowing that arguing with Death won't do him anything.
"Will they at least get to be together in their afterlife?"
"I'll personally make sure they do little one" the being leaves him alone seeing that he needs a moment, but the steady hold on his emotions prove that the entity isn't truly ever gone.
The thought is comforting not one to let himself wallow; he's never been good with self pity, climbing back onto his broom, vowing to not let himself underestimate the titans again. He didn't think of other titans Attacking the kids; he got complacent on the titans' ignorance of him.
that's on him.
Never again.
