Chapter 2. Wolfgang's choice.

When Wolfanga opened his eyes, it was still very dark. He was disorientated, had no idea where he was or what time it was. He looked over at the night stand. The lights blinked, 2:15am. This wasn't his clock, this wasn't his room, this wasn't his bed. Where was he?

He laid back on the pillow and stared up at the ceilings. The blinking from the clock echoed where he stared. He rolled over to his left side in hopes of falling back to sleep. At least he hoped. Once he rolled over, his face was met with a mop of blond hair. It was all coming back to him now. The woman he had been pining over for nearly 30 years was finally his. He couldn't remove the smile on his face, even if he wanted to.

He proceeded to put his arm over her. It was just like old times. Like nothing had changed. No divorce, no captain, no band. In this brief moment, the past 30 years hadn't happened. It was just him and her. He closed his eyes and nestled into the back of her neck. He didn't care that he had hair in his face, he just wanted her.

His mind began to wonder as he held her close. Wondered back to March 1979. The day that he had pondered quite a bit over the past 30 years. On the one hand, he hated it. If he hadn't asked Jette to come to the studio, they would still be together. No divorce, maybe even children. But on the other hand, it was the most successful part of his career. Music was his first love. And he knew that divorce was the price they both had to pay for it. The question remained on his mind, if he could go back and change it, would he?

Wolfang never really wanted to be a dentist. He didn't mind it, but he knew where his true passion lay. Dentistry was more to impress Jette's father. He never really approved of music as a career, especially for his son in law. So, he studied and worked at the studio. It was all worth it for her.

He always loved Munich. It felt like home and he couldn't wait to buy a real house with a fence and everything. The studio paid fine, but it wouldn't fund what he really wanted. He stood cleaning the switch board in the studio, staring at the blinking lights and buttons. That was until he got the call. The one musicians all dream of.

" Ralph Segal wants to make a band and he wants you to sing. You in?"

" Of course!"

Wolfgang was ecstatic. He nearly hung up the phone without hearing the next part of the conversation.

" Now, all he needs is a girl. Someone pretty who can sing. Anyone you know?"

Without missing a beat, he knew exactly who.

" I've got someone in mind…"

He'd hear her sing before. Many times actually. Never in public though. Only to him and sometimes in the shower. He had no idea how she would react. But he knew this was what the group needed. She would be a perfect fit. He entered their apartment and nearly flew through the door with excitement. His dream was coming true.

" You seem happy. So, it all went well with Ralph Segal?" She asked as she leaned against the kitchen counter. He couldn't wait to give her a real kitchen in a real house.

" I got it. It's a new group for Eurovision."

Her face lit up. He loved her smile. Especially when she was excited. You could see it in her eyes and the way the light reflected the blue.

" That's amazing! I'm so happy for you."

And he knew she meant it. Now, for the tricky part. He knew she could do it. The question was did she know?

" You know… they are looking for a girl."

She curled an eyebrow. She clearly knew something was up.

" Really? Do you have someone in mind?"

Wolfgang knew he had to rip the bandaid off sooner rather than later. He wanted this for her. If they got in, it would be a lot of time on the road. Away from her. He didn't want that. He wanted to spend every minute of every day with her. That and he knew she had tallent. Talent she should share with the world.

" Yes… I have someone in mind. She's beautiful, kind and has a great voice."

He walked closer. She was still working on dinner. From the looks of it, some type of meatloaf. Her hands were covered in mince and flour. He wrapped his arms around her waist and held her close.

" Really? Who is the girl? Should I be jealous?" She replied with a chuckle in her voice. She knew, deep down, that she had nothing to be jealous of. He only had eyes for her. Even when another woman walked past, where most men would at least sneak a peek, he never did.

Wolfgang took a deep breath and gathered his courage.

" It's you. You'd be perfect for this group."

She dropped the mince back into the bowl. Wolfgang thought he may have overstepped. Maybe he was asking too much of her. She turned in his arms to face her. Although she still had that smile on her face, her cheeks were red like tomatoes.

" Oh… that sweet but no. I can't sing. Not for people."

" You have such a great voice though! And we would be together."

She wrapped her arms around his waist, trying not to get her floury hands on his pants. She pondered for a few seconds. These seconds felt like they lasted forever. Wolfgang couldn't take the anticipation. He lifted her up onto the counter, pushing the bowl of mince to the back of the counter. He didn't care if flour or mince ended up on his clothes or anywhere else. Their faces were now inches from each other. She finally spoke.

" I'll do it. As long as I can be with you."

He lifted her onto his waist and spun her around.

" This will be amazing! We will take over the world together."

He kissed her. The most intense kiss he could fathom. Her hands cupped the side of his face as she reciprocated his embrace. Little did Wolfang know that this was the one choice that he would always question. This brief moment of bliss would change the course of both their lives forever.

BEEP…BEEP that dam alarm at the side of the bed went off. Why did she set an alarm for 6:30am? Wait… Wolfgang realized that she always did that. This thought brought some comfort to him. THe fact that it had been 30 years and some things had remained the same.

" Good morning."

She spoke. She finally spoke. This was not a dream or a fantasy. This really happened.

" Good morning."

Jette sat up in bed. The sheets covered her as much as she could manipulate them. She wasn't smiling, Wolfgang wondered what he could do to make her smile. He couldn't wipe the smile off his face. He kissed the side of her cheek.

" What's wrong?" The realization began to sink in for Wolfgang, why she may not be smiling. " Do you regret what we did?"

" No, it's just… after everything that's happened… it was just so easy… What does this mean?

He paused and pondered. Putting his arm around her in an embrace, he knew he didn't have an answer. He didn't know what this meant. And he definitely didn't want to scare her off.

" Let's not worry about that yet. Let's just focus on the here and now."

A smile began to creep across her face and she kissed him. Just like she did that day 30 years ago. Whether he should have asked her to join the group or not, he knew what a question he would never be able to answer. But she was here with him now and that's all that mattered.
