Author's Note: Here we check in on Ophelia. I came up with the idea to write a key about her when I was working on the Halloween special. (I am still working on it. The other two specials in the project are already finished.) I keep developing her story as I keep going along. Next week, there is going to the Halloween special and another key. I don't know what I am going to do for the latter just yet. You will just have to stick around and see the Halloween special. For now, enjoy this week's key.
Key Eight: Ophelia:
Hope is a dangerous thing. Ophelia knew that too well. And she still fell for it. Her mouth twitched into a dry smile. That Red Ballerina stared at her. She had no emotion on her face. No, she had no face at all. Still, Ophelia knew that she was staring at her.
The door opened again. It's time for the selection again. Jasdevi stood in the doorway. Those grins on their faces. She was used to it by now. Some of the other angels were the same as her. Marion and Alma keep still. They think if they don't draw attention to themselves they won't get chosen. Ophelia didn't care anymore. It was just going to be the same thing. She doesn't even make eye contact as her captors walk up to the giant hanging cage.
They are circling the cage. Ophelia doesn't move. Not because she isn't trying to get picked. (Though, that might be part of it. Damn that hope.) She doesn't know the real reason why anymore. Ophelia's learned this little habit from Marion and Alma.
"The best you can do is to not get noticed," Marion said.
"Does it really work?" Ophelia asked.
"Not always," the other angel said. "But it makes things more bearable." There it was again. That sad sense of hope. Why couldn't she give it up? Was she that desperate? Ophelia could hear herself laughing in her head.
"What are we looking for today?" Jasdero asked.
"Hm… They weren't really particular," Devit said. "They just wanted someone who looks pretty." They? How many clients were they shopping for tonight?
"Oh and don't forget, he's also requesting her tonight," Devit added. Ophelia's ear twitched. He? No… Don't let it be. Her stomach dropped.
"You."
Against her better judgment, Ophelia opened one eye. Devit stood in front of her, grinning. It was over. Hope betrayed her—again.
Devit unlocked the cage and pulled her out.
Here she is again. The twins walked her and two other angels down the hall. No one says a word. The angels don't even look up. Jasdevi were grinning to themselves. Ophelia knows what is coming next. They might as well get this over with. What did it matter? She was trapped here anyway.
They took her to Room 7734. Ophelia kind of laughed to herself. How appropriate.
Devit opened the door and shoved her inside. The door was slammed behind her. He didn't even say anything that time.
Ophelia was left alone in the darkness.
She felt herself trembling. That old feeling came back. She should be used to this by now. Devit already locked the door.
"Hello?" a man's raspy voice asked. The angel lifted her head. She can't see him in the darkness.
"Are you there, darling?" he asked. "Come a little bit closer." The angel gulped as she took a step closer.
"Closer," he said. Ophelia took more steps forward. The smell of cigarette smoke filled her nose. She felt her skin crawl. Was she really about to do this?
"Closer," he said again. His voice made her freeze. This was him alright. She didn't know what kind of mood he was going to be in. For now, it would be best to play along for everyone's sake.
There it was again. That old demon called Hope. Ophelia couldn't let go of it. No matter how hard she tried, it always came back to her. She tried to teach herself not to get her hopes up. But it always betrayed her in the end. Why did she think that tonight was going to be any different?
She walked up to the bed. His red eyes seemed to glow in the dark. Of course, he is smoking his cigars again. Ophelia did her best not to recoil at the smell. She could tell that he was smirking at her.
"Hey, Baby Girl," he said. Ophelia flinched. Baby Girl. They called her that when she was human. She asked this monster not to call her that but he ignored her.
"Come here," he said. She wordlessly obeyed. The angel crawled onto the bed next to him. He leaned in and kissed her. His hand moved to her breasts should be. He kissed her like he was about to suck her face off. It made her skin crawl.
"Take your dress off," he commanded. Ophelia sat up and took off her lacy pink dress. They dressed her up to look "pretty". Make-up and all. Only, he doesn't like her wearing make-up. He thinks it makes her look like a slut. (Ha! A slut. Oh, the irony.) He keeps requesting that none of his girls wear make-up. Sometimes, Jasdevi would remember. Other times, they would forget. Her dress hit the floor.
"Are you wearing any make-up?" he asked. Ophelia slowly shook her head. He grabbed her by the cheeks. He looked closely at her face. The angel didn't dare to move. She can never remember what his face looks like. Ophelia always blocked out his face from her memories. No matter how many times she sees him, he has no face in her mind.
He grunted to himself.
"Good," he said. "Take the bra off." Ophelia reached behind her back and unhooked the nude-colored strapless bra. He stared at her breasts on display.
"Finish undressing," he commanded. She slid off her panties without a word. He sat up on the bed.
"That's a good girl," he said. "Now, you know what to do." Ophelia lay down on he back and spread her legs.
From there, it's the same thing. His body is all over hers. Just lies there and takes it. Isn't that just how it goes? She's used to it by now. Why would it change otherwise? She looked up at the ceiling and disassociated herself. All that Ophelia could do was wait for this to be over. She wasn't allowed to leave until time was up. He collapsed on top of her when he was finished. He just laid there panting. It wouldn't be long before he went to sleep. Ophelia already knew what was coming next. And then she was going to have do it again.
All because hope decided to stab her in the back all over again.
