The Battle of Ilsen-Zildgardt was a major early victory for Earth's forces during the Third World War against the invading Imperial fleet. Fought from June 2nd, 1995, to August 14th, 1995, in and around the Ilsen Forest and city of Zildgardt in the Ulraznavian Federation, it saw Ulraznavian troops halt Imperial advances in the region and ultimately force the surrender of Imperial holdouts stationed in Zildgardt. The battle's success provided a much-needed morale boost for Earth's defenders in the opening weeks of the invasion and yielded vital intelligence on the Imperial forces, including the identity of the enemy commander, Lord Admiral Cardin Vallin.
Background
On June 2nd, 1995, Imperial Battlefleet Scolaris under Lord Admiral Vallin appeared abruptly in Earth orbit and commenced a lightning invasion across multiple continents. Vast swathes of territory fell in the first hours, including much of Euronia, South Liberia, and Afrika. Ulraznavian forces mounted stouter resistance but still suffered major defeats, including the encirclement of Frankfurt, headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Central Army Group.
As Imperial armored columns penetrated eastern Ulraznavia, the Ilsen Forest region emerged as a critical battleground. Well-suited for defense with its dense woods and marshy terrain, it shielded approaches to major population centers like Dresden and the Ulraznavian capital of Sarlzgrad (Salrzmark in OFN sources). The small city of Zildgardt also held the vital Meilsen Airbase. For these reasons, a desperate defense coalesced around Ilsen amidst the chaos of the worldwide invasion.
Opposing Forces
The Imperial expeditionary force tasked with taking Ilsen and Zildgardt consisted primarily of the 32nd Terrax Armored Regiment, supported by attached Blood Ravens Space Marines and Sororitas Orders. Facing them were reconstituted brigades of the Ulraznavian Army Group Vistula, including the elite 10th Panzer and 199th Air Assault Divisions.
Early Fighting
From June 2nd onward, the two sides clashed repeatedly in the forests around Ilsen. The Imperial armor initially drove the Ulraznavians back, but the terrain negated their mobility advantage. The woodlands also hindered Imperial air power, granting the defenders a reprieve from that threat. Battles raged across the region, wreaking an apocalyptic toll on the forest ecology.
End.
The battle ended when the Ulraznavians launched a single Tactical Nuclear missile, an RXK-11-. Angela Sabriya, a Sister of Battle and now Anti-War Activist describes the scene in her diary.
It was night, we thought the rebels had retreated. that we had won the battle. I had been cuddling my daughter Ayla all night...it was cold. Suddenly, we saw something looking like a shooting star. Me and Ayla watched fascinated as it went down, down. And then It happened. I had seen many horrifying things before arriving here, things that would make a man go mad. Yet nothing prepared me for the sight that was burned in my retinae for eternity...a sunrise at midnight. The thing took us all by surprise. One second, I'm sitting in our makeshift bunker trying to soothe Ayla as she cries from the cold and hunger. I whispered that it would all be over soon, the rebels routed. Empty lies, I know, but it kept her calm. Kept me sane.
Then through the slit in the concrete walls, I see it - a falling star streaking down right above the treetops. No, not a star. Even in the darkness, I can see the contrail as it plummets from the heavens.
I barely have time to shield Ayla and hunch down before the world turns white. A false sunrise at midnight, searing light so bright it blinded me even through closed eyes. The bunker shakes violently with the ground, nearly burying us alive.
Finally, the rumbling stops, replaced by an eerie silence. I clutch Ayla tight to my chest as she wails in terror. My vision slowly returns, blurred shapes reemerging from the angry red haze.
When we finally stumble outside, the devastation is beyond comprehension. Smoldering ruins stretch to the horizon where proud forests once stood. Any troops left in the open were simply...gone, like they were never there at all.
It's a scene from hell. But we survived. Ayla and I endured, though part of me died with Ilsen that night.
Somehow, some way, we'll find peace again. A new life far from all this madness and death. This I silently vow under the false dawn.
In Popular Culture
The Ulraznavian film, "Der Zwei Feur" (2012) is one of the most famous examples of this. With an all-star cast and fantastic realism, it was applauded by survivors on both sides of the battle. Some key actors were: -
Malia Volantis- a former Adepta Sororitas herself, played an Imperial Guard officer. Volantis described the movie as "Horrifically real, felt like I was back in the field."
Dieter Herzberger- As Captain Johann Staffelein, based on the real Captain Joachim Arbeit. Herzberger who had fought in the war as
Rupert Gint-Plays Ludvig Grün, a fictional Ulraznavian paratrooper who went from arrogant recruit to tired veteran. Giant an Edenite had previously won acclaim in the Movie adaptation of the acclaimed Edenite novel series Harry Potter
Additional notable cast members of the acclaimed war film "Der Zwei Feur" include:
- Wolfgang Kiel as General Albert Henrici, the Ulraznavian commander at Ilsen-Zildgardt. Kiel's portrayal captured Henrici's steely determination and strategic brilliance.
- Daniel Brühl portrays Ulraznavian soldier Konrad Weiss, a raw conscript forced to mature quickly under fire. Brühl's emotional performance humanized the horrors of war.
- Veteran actor Max von Sydow as Brother-Captain Adrian Androupolos, the fanatical leader of the Blood Ravens detachment. Von Sydow's gravitas and intensity left a chilling impression.
The film also utilized consultants and extras who were real veterans of the battle, lending an air of authenticity. While taking some creative liberties, "Der Zwei Feur" largely hewed close to the historical events and captured the nightmarish conditions of the fighting in and around Ilsen Forest. Its release on the 10th anniversary of the battle's end renewed public interest in this vital early campaign of the Third World War.
More examples of popular culture are in Edenite, Concordian, and Vostokvakian media.
